TL;DR
backup regularly, and TEST your backup strategy regularly.

I don't claim to be any kind of sophisticated person in terms of technology, but I had been following regular backing up practices since my first computers in the early 90s.  In late 2012, I had my main drive go out, and something like 2 back ups went out too.  I tried all kinds of things to recover each of them, and I could not figure out recovery on my own.

im no tech or computer genius either, which is why my backup strategy is so simple. its simple, it works for me, and it has lots of redundancy.

for OS and programs drive i image manually using macrium reflect (they have a free version)

rule 1:
every few weeks (or whatever), at least, do a full image backup.

rule 2:
any time im about to make a major OS update or program update, i image the drive before the update. then, after testing the update, image again. keep both images in case the update later is found to have bugs.

rule 3:
keep as many images as you can, so you have a timeline of multiple images tp choose from

for documents, i use file based copies:

rule 1:
nightly automated backups and check the logs that they were carried out daily (i use syncback, they have a free version too)

rule 2:
as needed, or at least every couple weeks or so, manually copy all documents to a new, unique folder elsewhere. i just name the folder docs-2019.03.30 or whatever works for you.

rule 3:
keep as many of those unique, timestamped documents folders as possible, so many timeline based copies of your documents are available.

for both types of backups, keep a rotating set off site. i do this on a as needed/convenience basis

AND MOST IMPORTANT: TEST THOSE BACKUPS REGULARLY TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE ACTUALLY WORKING AS INTENDED

edit: btw raid is not a backup strategy. just a hardware failure strategy.

Is there any data available about the distribution of claim sizes at mt Gox? Is the majority of the total claim amount part of small claims or large ones?

check here
https://wiki.mtgoxlegal.com/en/home/statistics/

dunno how current or accurate it is.

the bulk seem to be between 100 and 10k GBP

around 3000 claims are over 10k GBP

ouch

EDIT: corrected amounts and units.. duh

Yes, the creditors list is public, but I don't remember where it is. And yes, there are a few hue (legit) claims that sum the majority of BTC. Ie: Josh Jones of Btcbuilder has like 40000 IIRC.

i just looked briefly at a pdf list from 2016, there were a good amount of 3 digit btc claims, and some 4 digit ones too. the bulk seemed to be single or double digits, with a lot of < 1 btc amounts.

gonna try to find the latest full list in some sort of excel importable format.
2745  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 29, 2019, 02:01:21 PM
That is most definitely not what was meant in the poll.

my bad then.

still curious as to reasonings for dumping vs hodling though.

I tried to answer that above. Do you disagree these are valid reasons for a lot of people? (Not you)

makes sense to me that if people got burned big time and swore off btc when mtgox went down they could lose trust and cash out at 1st opportunity.

but this is the WO thread. thats why i was surprised, are not most of us here believers in btc?

lots of lurkers voted maybe?

PSA

make sure you have a regular backup strategy and that it actually works.

in my case a few days ago lost the primary drive in this daily driver, a Samsung 840 pro a bit over 5 years old. took out my installed programs and documents folder. (btc blockchain and games are on separate ssds and i keep a lot of copies of stuff in a 1 TB spinner raid 1 array on this rig, they were and are fine).

however, i had a full drive image 2 weeks old, and a documents backup from the night before. used the opportunity to get a bigger ssd via amazon prime so two days later i image the new drive from backup, copy the documents backup over and i had everything basically back to the proceedings nights status. turns out the old ssd still could access most files and recovered the stuff that i had done that day, minus a few emails in the local copy of outlook. a self test of the 840 pro ssd  i ran after this was all over failed. oh, and  image and documents backups are on a freenas rig with the equivalent of raid 5.

Final results from the last one:

im not sure what to make of that, as most WO folk should always be more or less in accumulate mode [...]

i voted hodl of course. im curious as to the reasons some voted "dump."

The vote was not what you would do but rather what mt Gox creditors would do.

On aggregate I expect a lot of selling of people no longer interested in the investment or who can use a financial windfall for normal life expenses (marriage, children, vacation, house, debt, medical expenses etc.) with or without gentle pressure from a significant other.

Life has continued on since early 2014 Wink

the poll caption reads "what do you think most of the Mt. Gox recipients will do upon receiving their BTC/BCH"

thanks for your explanation as to dumping.

Final results from the last one:

im not sure what to make of that, as most WO folk should always be more or less in accumulate mode unless in financial distress or the profit at the time is too good to pass up, say to exchange into some other type of wealth or holding. so dumping, especially at 4k USD, doesnt make sense to me, especially as most of us think it will ultimately be much higher down the road.

maybe some folk are treating it as a bonus to spend?

i voted hodl of course. im curious as to the reasons some voted "dump."

-one question for me personal, those anyone else besides JJG thinks I work this forum account with what he says a "team" ??

Nope.

Are you sure?  I remember some hot blonde chick in quite a few of his photos and a cute dog.  Those 3 could be a "team". Hmmm..... More information needed for a conclusion.

@ mic: no

@ icygreen: the hot blond has her own account here. but that dog.. hmm you may be onto something..
2751  Economy / Digital goods / Re: $4000 Buying old mining wallet ($400 for reference) on: March 28, 2019, 11:48:44 PM
Apparently it is worth $4k to be able to impersonate a 2010 miner for certain people.  It is a uncommon appreciation, and that is why it would likely only be valuable to a narrow kind of a person (someone likely attempting to engage in some kind of fraud or deception).

Of course, if no early miner really wants to enable such a likely shady request, then the price may have to go up in order to satisfy a theory that most things have a price, it's just a matter of how much.

im still running my core wallet i created in 2011. main reason i still use it is its convenient for mining payouts. most early btc was transferred out to paper or trezors long ago. but i still keep a bit in it as a pocket change kind of hot wallet along with some on my phone in mycelium. so, its still in use for convenience mainly as its easier to fire up the core wallet then hook a trezor to it for the small stuff.

for lulz, just now exported the transactions to a csv file for excel, 1304 rows/transactions.

im sure it might be useful in the future if i ever cash out big time as i still have my pool accounts created in 2011 and onward where a lot of my coins were mined to this wallet. so, proof they are legit mine from back in the day.

i do have a couple wallets from 2012 (pretty sure, i would have to check the file timestamps) i made on different machines for test purposes (just transferring btc back and forth) that are empty now but i sure wouldnt give them to anyone. they are part of my coin transaction history.  i even kept the now empty paper wallets, and old seed phrases for now empty trezor wallets. all addresses i have ever used i want exclusive control of.

supposed to be another standalone miner for acorns out in the next 7 days or so. no one is sure what algo.

we shall see soontm enough.

2754  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: those who have BCU1525s at home, how are you running them? on: March 25, 2019, 05:36:16 PM
So, in my case, it's better to stay on GPUs

at this point? yes, stay with whatever you already have. if or when BCUs prove themselves, well thats a different story. time will tell.

right now buying pretty much anything new for mining is a huge risk. even gpus unless you can get them cheaper than dirt and have crazy cheap electric as well.
2755  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: those who have BCU1525s at home, how are you running them? on: March 25, 2019, 03:27:02 PM
Only 2-4$ daily profit for a 4000$ card ?

right now, more or less yes. a bit more if youre really on top of the market prices and such.

partly because with the currently limited amount of bitstreams, and they being for smallish marketcap coins, everyone piles on them and crushes them. thus, the lower revenue.

more streams are available lately, and more are on the way (which i believe, DYOR though) so as more streams that target higher marketcap coins are released, revenue will go up as hash is spread around and the higher market cap coins can absorb much more hash as well.

as to ROI timeframe? unknown, if ever. just like most everything else in crypto.
2756  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: those who have BCU1525s at home, how are you running them? on: March 25, 2019, 01:08:27 PM
as i only use whitefire streams
Could you pleeeaase share links with us? Where to get whitefire's bitstreams (if you talk about them in the plural), how to start the mining using these streams? All i could find is 18 GH/s 0xToken bitstream here. Did I miss something?

per whitefire, the private "RB" streams are only available to those who send a ~5 second video of their fpga mining his 0x bitstream to info@zetheron.com. i used vivado (free) to program my BCU for my video but you can probably use nextjtag ($20 USD) to load the stream instead as he does not specify one or the other. the video just need to show your fpga and his 0x bitsream running.

so basically you need to figure that part out on your own. sorry, thems the rules. apparently he just wants you to show 1) you have a fpga and 2) you can use it via windows without any handholdong as thats what his miners use.

originally i used the allmine shell to set voltages (0.76 is a safe bet for 0x) and vivado to program the BCU for runnung WF streams but now i just use nextjtag to set voltage and load bitstreams in one shot. well worth the 20 bucks IMO

Quote
Many bitstreams such as RB1, RB2, RB3, and RB4 are available to registered users only.  To register, please send a 3-5 second video of your FPGA cards mining 0xBitcoin to info@zetheron.com.  The video should show both your cards, and how many cards, and the PC monitor with one miner instance per card.  Once you register, you will be e-mailed the RB1/RB2/RB3/RB4 bitstreams along with mining instructions and coin/algorithm information. The registered users bitstreams are by far the most profitable, typically ranging from $10 to $30 per day based on your hardware, cooling system, and the market conditions.  These ‘registered’ bitstreams have been reviewed by independent youtubers such as The Technicals (https://youtu.be/2Er8C1ZRSeE?t=68) and Motorcycles Vancouver (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1x7XYsvjQE).

per http://zetheron.com/index.php/downloads/

vivado: i used this edition  Vivado HLx 2018.3: WebPACK and Editions - Windows Self Extracting Web Installer (well pretty sure, its been a while) its free but you need to register.

EDIT nextjtag is completely separate from whitefire/zetheron, they have nothing to do with each other.

proving the legitimacy of my coins...

I understand the reasoning, but we shouldn't have to, otherwise btc usefulness would be diminished.

If you ever plan to cash out some hundreds of thousands dollars or even just a few tens of thousands you better be able to prove the legal origin of it (if/when required to do so). Bonus if you can prove and track the entire history of it.

For small quantities there's not much need to care though.

exactly that. just claiming that you traded on some obscure and now defunct exchange back in the day etc may not fly. i can directly trace the bulk of my coins right down to the day i mined them and on what pool. or traded them on a "legit" (<-whatever that means) exchange but in my case i mainly use bittrex, coinbase, poloniex or binance.. all duly reported to the irs like the dutiful little sheeple i am (which is very advisable here in the land of the "free" ie USA) which i figure is close enough.

i agree. however i am taking no chances. all it takes is one bureaucrat or organization to question where you got some coins to make a huge mess.

easy enough for me to keep records, and hope i never need to use them.

If you wanna say "Hi" to CSW, he's here :

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5120026

Well, I don't know who else would pay that much for an empty wallet... Seems like a bit of a dumb plan, though. Archived in case the post is deleted.

If you had lots of dodgy bitcoins.

A wallet that mined 300 bitcoins in the old days could be a viable "source" when explaining them at cash out

right?

proving the legitimacy of my coins is one reason i have my original core wallet from 2011 still running on this rig, have copies of activity data from (most) exchanges ive ever used, still keep seeds from now empty wallets, have copies of receipts from the mining hardware (as well as most of the actual hardware) from mining back in the day, etc. as one day im sure someone (bank, irs, whatever) is gonna want proof thats its all legitimately mine when i cash out.

guessing he is grabbing old wallets and attempting to do the same. although wouldnt chain analytics prove a problem?

2760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buying Used Computer Equipment For CryptoCurrency Unsafe? on: March 23, 2019, 12:36:24 PM
First off, is buying anything that used for the computer unsafe if you plan to store crypto in it?  Example buying a used laptop but then doing a complete factory reset and wiping everything?  Or could a hacker still put a virus/keylog in it?

Nope, once a computer hard drive has been formatted all the installed application even a virus is wiped out.

there are viruses that now can live in the BIOS. they will survive a drive format or drive replacement and reinfect any new OS installed on that system.

EDIT: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS#Security
