2761  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Setting Up a Bitcoin Node on: February 18, 2013, 11:37:39 PM
Os2Sam,
Search for your IP address on blockchain.info site is how I did it.

-Wave

Oh, OK.  Obvious enough Smiley.

Well you've helped me move forward a little more.  Hadn't really thought much about setting up port forwarding to my Bitcoin node in a while, now with your, and others, here input I've gotten it done.
Thanks,
Sam

I haven't paid much attention to my "Full Bitcoin Node" in a while.  But today I took a look at my bandwidth usage.  My uplink bandwidth is peaking around 1.4Mb and I'm relaying 7 to 15 transactions a day now.  I was a little surprised by my bandwidth usage though.

Was curious as to what others mileage was now?
Such as:

How many connections?
How many transactions relayed a day?
Upstream bandwidth usage?

entire network slows to a crawl im using cgminer on both my machines i do recall when i mined befor switching to poclbm might of fixed this issue might give it a shot again.  Also is thier a problem with the site i have my settings set to pay me at .10 and im at .16 now and still haset sent any funds.

Check your network and see what TCP port the majority of your traffic is on.

Also do you have a consumer grade router?  If so it may be buffer bloat.

2764  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If cost of power is not an issue what is the best HW investment right now? on: February 14, 2013, 01:42:31 PM
Buy Avalons, they exist and work, of course who knows when they will get around to actually shipping them.

Or wait and see what happens in the ASIC market in the next month or two.

Buying GPU's just seems plain silly unless you have a secondary use for them.

2765  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Not-for-Profit Mining on: February 14, 2013, 03:21:28 AM
Why would I mine at a loss? To secure the network? My unprofitable means of mining don't add much to the network in terms of security. My mining profits that allow me to buy more hardware and grow DO secure the network.

At the moment very few are mining at a loss because Bitcoin is at a very good price.

But if I were mining at a loss at the moment, in the future I believe the value will increase dramatically, unless Bitcoin fails.  I don't think it will.

I'm mining as an investment.  So I will continue no matter how much the near term value fluctuates.

I'm certainly not asking you to mine at a loss nor suggesting you should.  Also I think reinvesting your profits into more/better mining gear is a great idea as well.

2766  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Not-for-Profit Mining on: February 14, 2013, 01:05:08 AM
There seems to be tacit acceptance that bitcoin mining is only done for profit.  I mine at a profit, though it's miniscule.  But even if my mining was at a slight loss I'd continue to do so (my tolerance for loss == my tolerance for my wife nagging me about the electric bill   Smiley ).  I'm upgrading to ASIC even if I never make money on it.  I also run a full bitcoin node 24/7, both for the same reason--they're activities that contribute positively to the network.  There are other reasons too, mostly involving intense curiosity and fascination with numerous facets of the bitcoin ecosystem.

Now don't get me wrong:  I'm not knocking anyone's motivations. Whatever drives you is your thing and ultimately it still contributes to the network so there's no loss of respect from me.  I guess I'm mostly curious to know if there are others out there like me who don't care too terribly much about the balance sheet where mining is concerned.

The mine for profit folks are just very vocal and often quick to tell others how idiotic they are for mining at a loss at the moment.

There are allot of folks like myself, I suspect, that are mining for the long term and want to contribute to the network as you described.

So I would say I'm much like you that I don't care about the balance sheet today.  But I do expect it to pay off in the long run. If not then I still had some fun and learned allot.  That's worth something too.

2767  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Jalapeno coins per day in a few months? on: February 11, 2013, 05:34:05 PM
Now, imagine the price of bitcoin goes back to 5 USD. If you're the type of person that worries about such things, mining is not for you.
Ugh I had a terrible dream last night that the price had dropped from $23 to $0.50 in one night. I about shit myself when I woke up, as I actually thought it was real.

Point: This is actually a valid concern for a potential miner.

That's why it's a good idea to have a buy order at certain thresholds with your favorite exchange.
2768  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Jalapeno coins per day in a few months? on: February 11, 2013, 03:56:50 PM
Well, that's a pity. I was willing to invest on the stability of the network, while getting a few bitcoins in exchange. I don't want to make a profit, nor to convert the BTC to fiat, but at least I would like to recoup the investment in BTC in a reasonable timing.

Well if that is indeed the case then get a Jalapeno or MiniSC hook it up and forget about it.  They consume very little power and take up very little space.

I think the Bitcoin price surge we've seen since the Avalon release will continue, albeit at a lower rate.  So your Mined, or purchased, BTC's will increase in value and you will recoup your equipment investment.

I'm in the same boat as you.

2769  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Where is ASIC? on: February 09, 2013, 03:55:31 PM
What's more likely is that people are underestimating the time it takes to ship non-priority.  One thing I do not agree with however, is the decision to not release tracking numbers.  I wish there was a way to call up DHL and ask "Hey is there a package en-route to my house?  What's the ETA?"  Surely they of all people would know.

You mean release the tracking numbers to the general public or to the customers that bought them?

Did you order a Avalon?
2770  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Where is ASIC? on: February 08, 2013, 07:40:08 PM
But before they claimed to ship it was at 25 - 30 TH.  I don't think the current network hash rate is indicative of ASIC in play.  Maybe they are, time will tell.  It just seems weird that so much time passed and none are running.

You may well be correct.  The little bump that I saw may well be GPU miners taking advantage of the good Bitcoin price at the moment.  I too thought that there would be a much greater bump in the pool hash rate by now because of the Avalons.

I think there could be small numbers coming on gradually.  At least I hope so.  I'd hate to think that Avalon only made 2 or 3 units.
2771  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Where is ASIC? on: February 08, 2013, 02:27:55 PM
i thought one person ordered most of batch 1, right?

maybe that person doesnt have theirs yet

I guess I wouldn't know as I don't have access to Avalons order list.

But if that is so it would seem plausible that they would only partial ship that one persons order in an attempt to keep the bandwidth distributed for as long as they can.

But that is all just conjecture.

What we do know is that the network hash rate has increased or at least the rate which blocks are being solved has increased which in turn has increased the hash rate estimate.
Sam

I'm not sure where you are seeing that:  http://bitcoincharts.com/bitcoin/

The hash-rate Huh looks steady to me.

The hash rate when Jeff Garzik received his Avalon was 21.47 Ths/s.  Today it is 24.13 Ths/s.  So that's a little more than 2.5Ths/s increase, or so it seems to me.  Granted that is far from an in depth analysis, I'm just looking at the number, which is down to 24.07 now.  One of the Avalons must have crashed Smiley.

2772  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 08, 2013, 12:00:04 PM
Seymour Roger Cray from Cray Research would love that HW design ...
Nah, he would have made the chips from Ga-As, include a small radiator in each chip's package and submerge the whole shebang in a force-pumped fluorocarbon bath.
And he would have designed the case like a flower with one petal missing, just for the lulz.

+1 on the Gallium Arsenide
2773  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Where is ASIC? on: February 08, 2013, 03:20:01 AM
from all accounts batch one of avalons had 300 orders

300 x 68Ghash=20Thash

Well all 300 didn't/won't ship all at once.  They are hand carrying them to DHL a few a day.  At least that is what that one guy said when he announced that they started shipping.  So couple that with the CYN and it'll be a while before they all get delivered.

So if Avalon delivered weeks ago, where is all the new traffic?

Network hash rate is up 3.5 2.5 Ths/s and rising gradually daily.

Seems to me to be inline with ASIC's coming online a handful at a time.
2776  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Anyone have ufasoft 0.35 download link? on: February 06, 2013, 10:16:49 PM
Im looking for a download link to 0.35 ufasoft miner. Any chance anyone still has the files on their computer?

It looks like the latest one I have is .19.

Have you checked with killer or ufasoft? Try posting in the ufasoft miner thread.

2777  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: When difficulty goes up 30 times, caused by ASICs, will you still mine GPU? on: February 05, 2013, 12:47:58 AM
I'll mine my GPU's till my ASIC(s) arrive.  Not so much for the hash rate increase but for the power savings.
2778  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 04, 2013, 02:06:45 PM
Have any other Avalon user's checked in yet?

Network has rate is up 1.5Ths/s, yes I know that's an estimation. Smiley

BTW, it is confirmed that BTC Guild is ASIC-ready Smiley

Currently mining with the Avalon ASIC unit on BTC Guild, over stratum.

I apologize for being off topic, but did you post an Avalon review yet?
Thanks,
Sam
