2781  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Transaction Through Smoke Signal on: October 07, 2018, 05:55:55 PM
A Bitcoin transaction is just data. The method of transmitting a transaction from one node to another, whether by smoke signals, yodeling, or twitter, is not part of consensus.

On a related note, I would like to see the networking code segregated in such a way that nodes can interact using different network protocols and message formats.
2782  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to make money off cryptocurrency? on: October 06, 2018, 07:07:43 PM
Another smart way of earning through cryptocurrencies is to buy and hold cryptocurrencies that pay you dividends. There are many some great cryptocurrencies that pay you a fair share just for holding them and you are not even required to stake them, especially in a wallet.  Grin

Though you have to ask, "where do the dividends come from?"
2783  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to prevent SPAM in a flood fill network ? on: October 04, 2018, 05:07:02 PM
I assume that by "spam", you mean a DOS attack.

#2 won't work well for several reasons.
#3 won't help if there is no way to distinguish between real transactions and spam. Otherwise, it would only make the problem worse.

DOS attacks only work if the cost of the attack is less than the benefit, so the obvious way to prevent them is to make transactions costly. But there could be other ways, such as being able to identify the source of a transaction.

DOS attacks also only work if they are big enough to disrupt the network. If a network is big enough or has enough capacity such that it can't be disrupted, then there is no issue. Consider the futility of a DOS attack against the entire internet.
2784  Economy / Economics / Re: What happens if bitcoin price falls below the cost of mining it? on: October 04, 2018, 04:37:31 PM
I don't think bitcoin price will fall below the cost of mining it because if bitcoin mining cost more than its price,  miner will stop mine bitcoin

As miners stop mining due to a low price, the cost of mining goes down such that the price remains higher than the cost. Is that what you mean?
2785  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Someone emailed me my linked in password today and asking for Bitcoins? on: October 04, 2018, 06:07:03 AM
It's old news now. The person got your password off of one or more sites that post leaked passwords. They don't have access to your webcam. They might have access to accounts on other sites if your passwords are the same. Ignore the email and change your passwords.
2786  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If bitcoin prices remain the same until next year, will it be good for the crypt on: October 04, 2018, 05:48:29 AM
A steady price would be a best case scenario for Bitcoin; however, it would also indicate that adoption has stagnated, which is bad at this point.
2787  Economy / Economics / Re: Prediciton markets on: October 04, 2018, 04:18:28 AM
Here is my understanding of how a prediction market works:

People bet on an outcome with the amounts bet on each side determining the payout to the winners. In theory, a prediction market works because the people with better information will continue betting against the people with worse information until the odds in the prediction market represent the odds given by the people with better information. If it works as expected, a prediction market makes an accurate prediction because the odds are ultimately determined by the people with the best knowledge.

Let's do an example:

  • There is a bet on the outcome of the flip of a coin and currently there is currently $100 on tails and $1 on heads.
  • A smart person who knows that the chances for a single flip are 1:1 would bet $10 on heads to maximize their gain in the long run -- the expected return would be $40.45, $90.90 for heads and -$10 for tails. Now the total bet is $100 on tails and $11 on heads.
  • A different smart person would bet $22 on tails to maximize their gain. Now, the total bet is $100 on tails and $33 on heads.
  • Eventually, the bet will be $100 heads and $100 tails because as long as the sides are not 1:1, a smart person can make money (in the long run).

In theory, it works. However, the success of a prediction market in reality depends on the existence of a sufficient number of people with good knowledge that are willing to bet enough money to counter the rest of the bets. But even in best case, the market can only be as good as the people with the best knowledge.
2788  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What are your opinions of shapeshift on: October 03, 2018, 11:27:31 PM
Greetings,
I am intrigued about using shapeshift...I have heard that I can purchase litecoins with bitcoins, but I wish to be anonymous when doing so. Can I make this transaction WITHOUT submitting ANY of my personal information. What are your experiences with this service good and/or bad.
I hope to hear from you fairly soon!!!

I have used shapeshift.io and they required no identifying information, but they recently announced that they will begin doing KYC.
2789  Other / Off-topic / Re: $10,000 dollar reward being offered + Flat earth and how it relates to Bitcoin on: October 03, 2018, 11:14:49 PM
After I managed to beat down a flat-earther's "arguments", finally she wearied, but countered: "Okay, ... it's not exactly flat as in a sandwich. It's kinda bowl shaped, which is why we get all these curvatures." Morons be morons, whatever shape their madness acquire for the moment.
Lol, YAGJ. And what arguments did you use to do that, knucklehead. Ships disappearing over the curvature.  Grin
Bonus video FYI: Scientism is NOT Science Bill Nye & Neil deGrasse Tyson! (Flat Earth)

The video is entertaining, but there are too many errors (mostly related to perspective and scale) for anyone to take it seriously.
2790  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Manipulated by Cryptocurrency Trading Bots: WSJ on: October 03, 2018, 05:08:47 PM
The article contains a flawed attempt at demonstrating manipulation.

Quote
How One Bot Manipulates The Market
...
Virgil was checking prices every minute looking for arbitrage opportunities with cryptocurrency prices. The hostile bot would post and order to sell ether at a price lower than what other sellers were offering, prompting Virgil to try to make a buy. Right before Virgil completed the purchase, the bot would cancel its sell order. As a result, Virgil posted buy orders that never got executed, which increased the price on other exchanges, according to Qin.

The net effect of this scenario is 0. It does not cause the price to rise.

Perhaps Virgil's buy order will look like increased demand and increase expectations of a rise in price, but when Virgil removes the order, wouldn't that cancel out the effect? Furthermore, according to the price manipulation idea, when the "hostile" bot's sell order is placed, wouldn't that cause the price to go down, and wouldn't removing the sell order cancel the effect?

Here is a summary of the scenario:

Bot places sell order: price falls
Bot removes sell order: price recovers
Virgil places buy order: price rises
Virgil removes buy order: price recovers
2791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bakkt the Future of Bitcoin and cryptoworld? on: October 03, 2018, 05:58:32 AM
Bakkt seems ready to take off with a positive acceptance from Big companies. Bakkt aim to bring institutional money to crypto world.
Will this be the gateway to bitcoin adoption and possible Bitcoin ETF approval or this will only make bitcoin more scarier for regular joe to invest and hard to adopt?

The problem here is the thinking that Bitcoin is only about investing.

It doesn't matter who buys bitcoins, or how much they buy, or how many exchanges there are, or how many ETFs there are. If people can't come up with a good use for Bitcoin, its value will eventually go to 0.
2792  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I would like to ask about the site: https://firecrypto.info on: October 01, 2018, 11:45:53 PM
It is definitely a scam site.

"In connection with EU adopts rules to reduce anonymity for crypto users 15 May 2018, we were forced to reduce the number of bots and alter the exchange system. ..."
That's a bunch of nonsense. Hopefully, you haven't sent them any money already.

Otherwise, having to send money in order to receive a large amount of money is a very common scam. Having to send money in order to receive your money is extortion.
2793  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: am i being scammed? on: October 01, 2018, 11:32:30 PM
A guaranteed unrealistic return is a classic indicator of a scam. The use of the phrase "arbitrage opportunity" is also typical of scams in this context. Claims of "algorithmic trading" are also a strong indicator.
2794  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Are we doing enough to save the planet? on: October 01, 2018, 11:08:07 PM
Without human, the world will never have to go through this.

That is not true. In the past, the temperatures have been both much warmer and much colder than they are now.

People that want to "save the planet" must remember that we are not saving the planet for its sake, we are saving it for our sake. The planet was ok before humans arrived, it is ok now, and it will be ok after humans have gone.
2795  Other / Serious discussion / Re: One day we will produce so much clean free energy it will become a "problem". on: October 01, 2018, 11:03:36 PM
Think about it.

Tesla building resistance plants to burn some of all the electricity we get from the sun. And saving the world.

Could be a scenario.

Tesla is great and has a lot of money to invest in big projects but I think to solve the world energy crisis it takes more than the likes of Tesla. There needs to be a global union to make this happen.

There is no world energy crisis. Eventually, it will be too expensive to burn oil and coal and global temperatures will fall. The switch to renewable energy might be expensive, but it won't cause a crisis.
2796  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin & Sidechains on: September 29, 2018, 05:43:39 AM
...
remember rule 2
if its not confirmed on the bitcoin blockchain. its not a bitcoin transaction.
...

Perhaps your rule needs some work. You are saying that all of the transactions in the Bitcoin mempool are not Bitcoin transactions since they are not confirmed. If that is the case, then your definition of "bitcoin transaction" is not very good.
2797  Economy / Economics / Re: Has Trump improved the economy? on: September 27, 2018, 04:23:23 PM
I don't think he's made it worse, but when he took office the economy wasn't exactly in shambles.  In other words, he inherited a pretty good economy from Obama.
...
He can't take credit for everything though.

We will see whether or not he has made it worse when the effects of his trade policy kick in. He will have to take credit/blame for that. I predict that he will make it worse, and his actions could trigger the next recession.
2798  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-09-27]Bitcoin Halvening Alludes Market Correction Ended on: September 27, 2018, 04:12:17 PM
Just a crappy Coinidol article that says nothing. Don't bothering wasting your time on it like I did.
2799  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin mining & zero-point energy on: September 27, 2018, 06:47:25 AM
If zero-point energy technology was released possible what wound happen to bitcoin mining? would it need to be proof of stake instead of proof of work?

FTFY

Anyway, the design of Bitcoin makes it so that any reduction in the total cost of mining only increases the difficulty until the total cost approaches the value of the block reward.
2800  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and C++ on: September 26, 2018, 07:21:14 PM
I have a related concern with the idea that the Bitcoin Core source code is the Bitcoin protocol specification.

Eventually, the C++ language will go the way of COBOL. Very few people will be able to interpret and maintain the specification in the not-too-distant future.
