I am interested to play chess online. Does anyone know how can I play chess online for real money? Is there any secure page for playing chess for money,  because on the internet has a lot of fake web pages? I tried to find any page, but I did not find.

Short answer:

Don't play strangers for money online unless it is for purely entertainment with a trivial amount of money.

Bitcoin is my hobby, chess is my profession.

Opposite of many people in this forum

I will go with Qa4 as well, with the idea of taking the pawn.

It looks like team bitcointalk agrees on 5. Qa4+. My response is 5....... Nbd7

The current position is updated below:

1. Nf3    d5
2. c4     e6
3. g3     Nf6
4. Bg2   dxc4
5. Qa4+ Nbd7

If white represents bitcointalk community, my next move would be a2 to a3 . There must be some way to make the elephant escape.

This guy suggested the same move as I previously did, is that movement banned or something? This time it was not event discussed...

Why do not you simply play each other so that you won't have to wait 48 hours to make each movement?

I would not mind simply watching the match, actually I just came back to the thread to delete my suggestion and not bother the other guy (it seems that a consensus was magically reached, though).
Yeah, I said Bishop to Queen-4 and he totally condescended to me about how it's a stupid move. What a jerk.

I never called "Bishop to Queen-4" a stupid move. I said it was an illegal (impossible) move. Then I directed you to the rules of chess and algebraic notation.

Like I said before I don't want to be in charge of finding consensus for bitcointalk. If you want to appoint someone to tally votes for different moves and moderate any debate go ahead.

I'm probably the biggest fan of professional chess on bitcointalk (albeit a mere kibitzer) so I'm watching this thread closely.

Come on, bitcointalk.

OP, are you a GM, IM, ranked on 2700chess, etc?

Thanks for your support! I am a big fan of the bitcoin community.

Yes I am a GM and ranked on that list.  I happen to know that there are at least two others on the list very interested in bitcoin. I may ask one of them what he thinks about the current bitcoin XT debates.  I am following the issue and have some opinions but keeping an open mind.
287  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Exactly what is it that people have against the XT patch? on: August 18, 2015, 08:07:33 AM
An agreement is what is best for bitcoin. Right now that is looking less and less unlikely near term.

Perhaps the core devs should all participate in non binding arbitration. Maybe an independent view (assuming an arbitrator with sufficient technical knowledge to be helpful can be found) could help the parties reach an agreement.
288  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Bitcoin Cipher/puzzle - 0.56 Prize ! Bitcoins on: August 18, 2015, 07:54:57 AM
This does look interesting. I wish I had more time to study it.

It looks like some of you are getting pretty close to solving it well in advance of the 30 day limit!
289  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: August 18, 2015, 07:48:45 AM
3. g3 and 3. d4 are the two proposals right now. I will wait for a consensus
Don't look at me. If I wanted an early d4, I would have done it on move 1. Unless bitbaby agrees to postpone his premature pawn push, we'll need a third vote.

Ok, I remove my d4 move. Don't mind me. Have fun!

I hope you keep participating. Your move would have been just fine! My hope is that as the game continues more players will join and team bitcointalk will have an easier time reaching consensus. Lets proceed with 3. g3. I will respond with 3....Nf6

Your move bitcointalk. You have the white pieces

3. g3   Nf6

Your move!

Psst. Bishop to Queen-4.

I have no desire to moderate the discussion of moves from team bitcointalk. However I will make an exception and veto this one as it is not a legal move in the current position.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1148538.msg12132767#msg12132767

Please use algebraic notation if possible. It is easier for everyone to understand.

So far I only see three proposals (3. d4 3. g3 and 3. a3) with no community consensus

I said Bishop to Queen-4.  Angry

Sorry but you cannot move either bishop in the current position. Even if your bishops were not blocked by your pawns neither could move to Q4 (d4). I assume you were attempting to use descriptive notation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_notation). Algebraic notation is easier for everyone once you get used to it.

Maybe this will help:

291  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: I suspect we need a better incentive for users to run nodes (c) on: August 17, 2015, 09:22:33 AM
The whole appeal to authority hugely undermines the principles of the system.  If you want something that lives and dies on the whim of some authority: centeralized systems can have much better performance and security properties.

This is a critically important point.

I think that most people are attracted to bitcoin at least in part because of its lack of centralized authority. If necessary I am willing to sacrifice some amount of "better performance and security properties" if necessary. Decentralization is most important.

@letsplayagame  WOW!!!! Somehow I do believe you are a top player (ok maybe I also want to believe). I've been playing chess myself for roughly 15 years and have been following the FIDE/international chess scene closely the past 10 years  Smiley I must say it's pretty freaking exciting to be able to interact with a world class player on here. I don't suppose you would consider accepting friendly challenges (at some point) on a site like http://en.lichess.org/ ?  Roll Eyes  I love playing chess but I'm not nearly as good as I should be, I lack focus and dedication, I understand playing someone like me might not be a lot of fun for you but still I'll keep my fingers crossed we have a little blitz session at some point  Smiley
In any case welcome to the forum! Really awesome to have you here (whoever you are Wink )

PS. You should consider updating the op with moves that have been played so far, it'll be easier for new people to jump into the game  Smiley

Thank you for your kind words and advice. I updated my OP with the current position.

I do play online on occasion on several sites including the one you mentioned. Most of the time I play under an alias (as do many top players) but I don't think it is really that "anonymous".  Chess is a great game for players of all levels. You are right that is takes time and dedication to improve but it can still be enjoyable for everyone.

1. Nf3  d5
2. c4   e6

beat it:

Nailed it lol....

But i am amazed, why would OP want to hide his identity?

If the community uses a good chess engine to cheat I will very likely lose. However I don't really see the point. There is no secret about chess engines being better than even the best humans in 2015.

In the 1990s this was a more interesting question.

I already answered the question about why I choose to remain anonymous for now.

why do you hide your identity anyway?

Wouldn't you if your name were Ed Trice? https://www.linkedin.com/in/edtrice

i wont hide if i am Ed Trice ahaha ill let you all know. LOL get the game moving im watching. Smiley

I am not Ed Trice.

I prefer 3. g3.

Some of my supporters would not be happy if they knew how much time I was spending thinking about cryptocurrencies instead of chess.
Since Russia would be the least happy to know that, I would venture that you are a Russian GM. Though that doesn't really narrow it down much.

3. g3 and 3. d4 are the two proposals right now. I will wait for a consensus

I am not ready to confirm or deny where I am from. I will say that I travel often. My above comment was not necessarily meant to imply that my country has an official position on bitcoin (that may or may not be true). I only meant that there is a lot of pressure on me to win and desire to see me very focused on chess.

This may be a small clue to my identity. Of course I spend a lot of time studying chess. However I have a small reputation for studying less than some of my peers. I do not consider myself lazy, I just like to do other things, at least in private.  In fact I learned about bitcoin by accident one day while browsing online when I was supposed to be be reviewing my opening preparation for an upcoming opponent.
297  Economy / Gambling / Re: try your chess skills for bitcoin on: August 13, 2015, 06:19:42 PM
How can I find someone to play this site?

Did you read my post? I am one of the top players in the world and I would not play for bitcoin against a stranger online. My caveat was that if you are just betting a small amount for purely entertainment reasons then I see no problem. Most people are unlikely to cheat if playing for a very small amount as it is essentially just a waste of time.

It does not matter if the site operator is completely honest or has "software to detect bots". There are free chess programs available that any user could run from another machine completely undetected good enough to beat me or anyone else. You will not find one Grandmaster who disagrees with me regarding the strength of current chess engines.

If you want to bet against someone who you know and trust completely, then do so.  I see no purpose of involving a 3rd party gambling site to hold your funds or take a cut. There are many free websites and mobile apps you can use for free to play against someone you know.
298  Economy / Gambling / Re: try your chess skills for bitcoin on: August 13, 2015, 04:56:46 PM
Yes the site and idea is really cool but still players will use chess algorithms and will play according to it

yes maybe you are right , but it's still really great to play chess and to throw some coins
there are some skilled players that won't mind even if they are playing against bot moves so maybe they will throw some mbtc and try to beat that bots

Yes a good chess player has always got a fair and good chance to beat a bot... never matter how good the bot is
well its impossible to beat the good programmed bot as even professional players loose against them so i believe ordinary players like me have no chances if someone will play an unfair game

Feel free to join my thread if you want to play for free.

No prizes, just the opportunity for the bitcointalk community to play a top rated player for free!

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1148538.msg12096904#msg12096904

Cheating is a major issue in chess so I do not recommend playing for bitcoin online (unless your goal is solely entertainment).  Many tournaments now have strict rules to prevent players from accessing computer aided assistance during games.

I can confirm that every chess player in the world would currently lose in a long match versus a top computer. There is a very small chance for a human to win (and larger chance to draw especially with white) in any given game but ZERO chance any human would win a long match.

This is not an issue open for debate in 2015. This was a legitimate debate in the 1990's

why do you hide your identity anyway?

Several reasons.

1. I like mysteries. Over time I will give clues which may eventually lead to my identification.

2. Some of my supporters would not be happy if they knew how much time I was spending thinking about cryptocurrencies instead of chess.  When the time is right I will help them understand. All top tournaments have players from many countries. In many ways it would be easier for both prizes (and appearance fees/expenses which are sometimes paid in advance) to be paid in bitcoin instead of fiat.  I have a very good idea of the people I need to talk to in order to make this happen. How receptive they will be at this time is another question. They may not be ready for such a big change.
