41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 21, 2016, 09:25:33 PM
Friendly reminder for everyone, the work and activity on the GUI can be followed here:

https://github.com/mbg033?tab=activity

https://github.com/mbg033/monero-core

https://github.com/mbg033/bitmonero

Aha, so work has already fully started. Thanks for sharing the links.

May I suggest posting the links to the funding page as well, since I was under the (naive) impression nothing was happening yet.

Except from https://github.com/mbg033/bitmonero, they are all in the OP. I'll ask othe if he can add that one as well.

Will the new GUI offer the ability to use the view key function for Monero cold storage wallets?

I think it will, I'll ask about it later. Also, you can already check if your funds arrived safely at your (cold) wallet address using this tool:

First, make sure to save the transaction hash shapeshift, an exchange, or simplewallet provided you with. Subsequently, you can use the following tool:

http://xmrtests.llcoins.net/checktx.html

Fill in your address, the viewkey that belongs to the address (Moneroaddress provides this), and the transaction hash of the specific transaction. It should show you something like: "These outputs are yours". The sum of those outputs should be equal to the amount that was sent. I suggest using a test amount first to try out the tool and get a bit familiar with it.

Using this tool you can be certain that your funds arrived safely at your wallet.

That tool is perfect. Thank you for making me aware of it. I trust the message below but want to learn how it works.

Note: this site operates completely on client-side Javascript; no data is ever sent to the web server.
Big thanks to MoneroBlocks for the transaction data API, without which this page would not work.

If this means no data is sent to the http://xmrtests.llcoins.net server what about the MoneroBlocks server? Data must be pulled from MoneroBlocks in order for the viewkey to work. What data must be sent to MoneroBlocks to make that happen? Does MoneroBlocks have the ability to associate viewkeys with the IP address of the party making a request for data?

Code:

var api = "http://moneroblocks.info/api/get_transaction_data/";
var res = $.ajax({url: api + hash, type: 'GET', async: false});

the only data sent to MoneroBlocks API is the tx hash.

Correct. MoneroBlocks can also see that the request comes from that website.

Perfect. That is exactly the answer I was hoping for.
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 21, 2016, 08:52:05 PM

It's luigi1111's website, who is one of the core-team members. See -> https://getmonero.org/knowledge-base/people

I'll ask him to comment on this.

I appreciate that. No matter what the answer is to my privacy related (viewkey) question, this tool plus a cold storage wallet seems more secure than using mymonero.com for verifying receipt of Monero payments.

Thank you luigi1111

Besides pruning and block time in what important ways does Aeon plan to differentiate itself from Monero?

48  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: RBF transactions to be enabled at the next core update on: February 19, 2016, 07:08:19 PM
I do not see the problem with RBF. Almost nobody is going to abuse it for low value transactions (like Starbucks). The economic incentive is not high enough to cheat for very small transactions.  For large transactions merchants can just demand multiple confirmations which they should be doing anyway regardless of the introduction of RBF.

Having said that is the drawback of allowing both RBF and CPFP?

Did letsplayagame outplay us again?

What are the score? How many games have been played and won/lost?

This is just the second game which is completely my fault. My schedule has been pretty busy and the games progress slowly as a result. I will be taking a break after this game, but will return periodically to post puzzles and participate in the other bitcointalk chess thread.

This game was much more difficult for me than the first and the outcome was in question for a long time. Next week I may have some time to come answer questions and provide some analysis of key positions in the game.

The person mentioned below noticed the Monero price jump today before I did.  I would not be shocked if he asks me to start paying him some proportion of his earnings in XMR instead of BTC at some point.

Bitcoin update:

Most top chess players have "seconds" who help with opening preparation for certain opponents. Often this done over Skype from far away. One of my seconds has just agreed to accept bitcoin for payment going forward.

I am lucky that I can make a good living from playing chess alone.  Most "professional" chess players cannot and must supplement their income by coaching or something else. For those that teach online, bitcoin is perfect, especially if your students live in another country.

It is my understanding that no PoS coin has fully addressed this issue...
I'm surprised you think that. Nxt is an example of a PoS coin that does not use coin age, and does not have the problem you mention. It's been running successfully for over 2 years, and is not a clone of Peercoin. Qora is another. There are more.

There are other PoS attack vectors. Just because someone has not successfully made an attack yet does not mean it cannot happen in the future.
