163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero vs Boolberry Chess Challenge and CryptoNote technical discussion on: November 04, 2015, 10:12:04 PM
I remain very interested in CryptoNote but am happy that I have so far delayed making my first purchase.  The recent bitcoin rally has been a pleasant surprise.  I may take advantage of the lower prices of CryptoNote coins (in bitcoin terms) soon. Privacy continues to be something that is gaining more attention and CryptoNote and ZeroCoin seem to be the most promising options to address the privacy limitations of bitcoin.

I am interesting in hearing more comments about this article:
http://www.wired.com/2015/11/zerocoin-startup-revives-the-dream-of-truly-anonymous-money/

1. How will the funding model impact distribution?
2. Has the trusted setup problem been sufficiently solved?
3. How scalable will this be compared to CryptoNote? What about compared to CryptoNote plus Confidential Transactions?

Besides CryptoNote and ZeroCoin are there any other promising alternatives on the horizon?

I continue to follow developments here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/3pw30d/ringct_for_monero_updated_versions/

Can someone explain to me in detail exactly how this process would work on a technical level? If Zerocoin ever has a chance of becoming a successful currency (which the angel investors must think it has a chance to be) this setup process must be beyond reproach.

...
-If I recall correctly, the creator of the genesis block holds some kind of masterkey. As a result, you have to trust this person. Even if this key was held by a group, you still have to trust that particular group. In addition, you have to trust the program they run to create the Genesis block (the masterkey could be in there).
...

This. The centralization of security makes it possibly even worse than Dash.

Well, in theory there is supposed to be a genesis creation event where the keys are generated and held by a dozen well known entities. The process is observed by people physically present and online via live video where the genesis block is created and all the keys are destroyed. Even if some of the keyholders are dishonest and somehow manage to make and keep a copy of their key it is useless without all of the other keys. As long as one person is honest or incapable of keeping a copy then the key is destroyed forever and the event never needs to be recreated.

With all that said, I'm rather dubious of the ability to pull it off and the trust that would need to be imbued by new participants as the currency gains more use. The point is that it is possible to setup in a manner where future trust isn't necessary, at least theoretically.

165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of Burn, will it work? 2 coins in 1 month, which will survive beyond PoB? on: November 01, 2015, 03:29:33 PM
I have been told that my coin is doomed. Considering that 90% of all new coins fail, this is possible. However, I would like your opinion, which is more likely to fail?

Discuss......

Both of these coins have flawed designs including but not limited to the process (and timing) of selecting coins to be burned. Some people will have advance knowledge of some coins likely to be selected and can easily exploit that advantage.

There should be a clear and important purpose of each coin in addition to the goal of burning other coins. Most altcoins are destined to fail. There is nothing here to suggest an exception.

A professional chess player? Rated in the top 100 FIDE? Damn.
I'm a fan of chess too. Currently i'm making exercises in the "Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations and Games by László Polgár".
I'm on the 2k exercise already..
Very nice book actually! Smiley

Well, if you could reveal your identity would be nice!

Welcome to the game. Please help vote for future moves. That is a very famous book.

Eventually I will reveal my identity. If you read this thread carefully you can find clues that eliminate most of the names on that list.

GM OP.

Who do you think will be the next competitor against Carlsen. Who is the one who make a chance?

Few years ago he was absolutely number one but the last time he isn't in that good shape.

Everyone participating will have a chance to win the 2016 Candidates Tournament. Naturally if I am participating I would never name another person as being most likely to win. I can neither confirm nor deny my participation but will plan to do so (if I am participating) before the tournament begins. If I am participating and if I win I will attempt to find some bitcoin friendly sponsors for the World Championship Match.

It is no secret that Carlsen will be a favorite over anyone he faces.

I have enjoyed learning about CryptoNote and will continue to study more.  For those who missed the first game against me, I have just started a second:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1148538.msg12821148#msg12821148

It would not be fair for me to participate in this game but it is shaping up to be a good fight.

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 dxc4 5.Qa4+ Nbd7 6.Qxc4 c5 7.O-O a6 8.d3 b5 9.Qc2 Bb7 10.Nc3 Be7 11.Bf4 O-O 12.Rfd1 Qb6 13.a4 Rfd8 14.a5 Qa7 15.e4 Rac8 16.h3 Nb8 17.Be3 Nc6 18.Qb3 h6 19.Ne2 Qb8 20.Rd2 Nb4 21.Bf4 Qa8 22.Ne5 Nd7 23.Nxd7 Rxd7 24.Qd1 Rcd8 25.Nc1 c4 26.dxc4 Rxd2 27.Bxd2 Bxe4 28.Bxe4 Qxe4 29.cxb5 Nc2 30.Nb3 Nxa1 31.Nxa1 Qd3 32.Nb3 Qxb5 33.Qc2 Qe2 34.h4 Bf8

I accept the communities resignation and am willing to play again. Below are a few comments about our first game:

I played Nbd7 because it was a more dynamic choice (suitable when playing for a win). You will see many GMs play Bd7 followed by Bc6 here immediately challenging white for control of the long diagonal. The drawback is that the position is less dynamic with blacks pawn on c7.

In this position 8.Qb3 was more accurate than 8.d3 for similar reasons to my above comment. In the game I was able to activate my bishop (which is sometimes a problem piece for black in similar positions) with my c pawn not being blockaded (as in 5....Bd7 and 6...Bc6).

After 8.Qb3 I would have had to spend more time developing compared to the game because an immediate b5 is not possible (17.Ne5 wins material for white).

OP, was there a turning point in this match?
I would say 14. a5 was a pretty weak move.

Objectively the move was was worse from a practical standpoint that an objective one. Most of the time if black plays bxa4 or b4 white will benefit from the change in pawn structure because c4 may become a great outpost for a white knight and black will have more weaknesses.

Leaving the tension on the queenside requires me to continually think about protecting my pawn on b5 and whites potential future use of the a file. Therefore even if objectively a5 is not a big mistake it makes things easier for black on a practical level because the tension favors white. After a5 my pawn chain becomes much harder to attack and any inconvenience to my queen is temporary. The pawn on a5 can itself become a target in the future.

From a positional standpoint your next move 15. e4 was a problem. Your d3 pawn becomes a long term weakness with d4 and b4 becoming attractive outposts for my pieces.  Regardless of the objective valuation at this point the position is much easier to play for black.

My choice to play Nb8 instead of c4 I think is also important from a practical perspective which I already discussed in my post linked below

Qc6: 1 vote (hermesesus)
resign: 2 vote (boolberry, avw1982)

Lets resign and analyse this game and start a new one. It's to frustrating to try defending a totally lost position.

If you all agree I am willing to play again and discuss what happened this game.  Is hermesesus the only person who wants to continue this game?
174  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: October 27, 2015, 02:31:32 AM
We should have another problem to solve, while this games reaches its logical conclusion.

The position below was close to a position from European Chess Club Cup Skopje 2015. White was careful not to allow this defense in the game.

Black to move and draw:

175  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: October 25, 2015, 09:34:23 AM
Thanks for all the explanations. I am wondering if Bb4 instead of Bf8 also win a piece directly?

You are right. Bb4 is a good move and would win easily after 35.Qc7 Rd3 36.Qb8+ Bf8

Once noticing that white has absolutely no defense, black can save calculation time (if in time trouble for example) by playing Bf8 to stop absolutely all threats including checks and threats against the bishop.  There are many winning plans for black, so it is largely a matter of personal preference.  I just wanted to point out that whites pieces are paralyzed in defense of each other and helpless against the threat of Rd3.

There is no surrender!
I vote for h4.

The current position is updated below:

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 dxc4 5.Qa4+ Nbd7 6.Qxc4 c5 7.O-O a6 8.d3 b5 9.Qc2 Bb7 10.Nc3 Be7 11.Bf4 O-O 12.Rfd1 Qb6 13.a4 Rfd8 14.a5 Qa7 15.e4 Rac8 16.h3 Nb8 17.Be3 Nc6 18.Qb3 h6 19.Ne2 Qb8 20.Rd2 Nb4 21.Bf4 Qa8 22.Ne5 Nd7 23.Nxd7 Rxd7 24.Qd1 Rcd8 25.Nc1 c4 26.dxc4 Rxd2 27.Bxd2 Bxe4 28.Bxe4 Qxe4 29.cxb5 Nc2 30.Nb3 Nxa1 31.Nxa1 Qd3 32.Nb3 Qxb5 33.Qc2 Qe2 34.h4 Bf8

I don't mind playing a few more moves to make the result clear.  Proper technique in a winning position includes minimizing counterplay from your opponent. 34.h4 Rd3 would win material but 34.h4 Bf8 is even simpler as Rd3 (threatening both Rxb3 and Rf3) cannot be stopped and all checks and potential counterplay from white are prevented. If you are losing, seek complexity. If you are winning, seek simplification. I have time for a simple move like Bf8 because whites pieces are stuck passively defending each other. Neither whites knight or bishop can move without immediate loss of material.

OP, was there a turning point in this match?
I would say 14. a5 was a pretty weak move.

I am happy to discuss it once the game is over. Some of the beginners may not see why white is lost yet.
178  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Should websites refuse to send coins to an already used address? on: October 23, 2015, 06:54:11 PM
I think most of us know that address reuse is a bad idea and it's better to use a unique one for every transactions to avoid security and privacy issues. If a website owner accepts bitcoin deposits and a user wants to withdraw coins to an address which was already used in the past, should there be a warning or even an error message or would that be too annoying for the user?

I'm curious about your opinions!

Reuse of an address is the sole business of its owner. It's a matter of choice, for most people simplicity is the most important.
So imho, while talking about a coin that's about freedom.. asking about banning / blocking the freedom of choice is absurd.
Hence my answer is clearly NO! No blocking!

A warning can be done, because it helps the users learn and get more aware of what their choices mean. But that's all.

Privacy matters a lot to me but so does free will. This answer seems appropriate.
