2821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stores Can Now Charge You Extra Just for Using a Credit Card on: January 30, 2013, 04:30:41 AM
I feel this has a weird relation back to Bitcoin since this fee is applied to credit cards and not debit cards, meaning it is only affecting people that are spending money they don't have.  Something that you can't do (yet?) with Bitcoin.

You are right. However, many people (including me) use CC simply because of the 0.5-1% bonus given by CC company, while they actually have enough cash in their hands. If they need to pay more than 1% extra for transaction fee, they will simply use cash or debit card.

For online international transaction, however, cash and debit card don't work. Bitcoin would become a good choice.
2822  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: January 29, 2013, 05:33:01 PM
Even Jeff and BTC Foundation may receive functioning Avalon, think twice before you order the 2nd batch:

南瓜这次发货的方法我很熟悉
我见过有人这么做,做出来的产品良品率低,就从矮子里面找高个的
拼凑出来几台最稳定的机器先拿出去
我和群里的也说过,我相信他发给JEFF的那个机器是工作的很完美的机器
一旦JEFF发了评测,后面的人哪怕拿到的是垃圾也只会认为自己比较倒霉

I know the way how NGZ is shipping his product.

I knew someone shipped his product like this before: Since most of the products were defective, he picked the best ones and built a few stable machine for first round shipping.

I told other people in the channel: I believe he will send a perfect machine to Jeff. When Jeff has released his report, other customers will just think they are unlucky even they receive a crappy machine.

2409f355c8910721fbbb5c54a01b8f9c692cfb292c3b4f7baf5b8151e44fef21 is the first accepted offer, this one received over GPG-email. Accepting it was a no-brainer: It made a clever and quite generous 10 BTC multi-signature donation the developers.  I've updated the message to  indicate bbeacff94c2d20df8eb4e5556b38977863b4548c79105b10da943cd2eecddd80:0 (also 1 BTC) as the new output of mine to spend.

Loaded: Slightly too slow, 1d7b37fa is now spent.  Compute and sign your very impressive transaction again with bbeacff. Smiley

2825  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 28, 2013, 05:07:15 PM

we (my team and some other core people) consider BFL have not spend any money on ASIC development yet. BFL's business flow is: announce dreamlike specs -> taking pre-orders -> find people to development -> if succeed, release and shipment. if fail, run. BFL sell products at super low price because their customer take all risks.
so now BFL is just collecting money for their ASIC project and avoid current delivery pressure (means they are running out cheap FPGAs).
if this business model succeeded, i will classified this as a shame of human intelligence.

and let me explain what is the "now in final stage development" mean. in ASIC design flow, this means RTL design is nearly finish. as a SOC or some other complex ASIC, RTL design and testing will take most of the development time. but mining ASIC is not a RTL complex design, it is a high computing density chip. most of the work is physical design, packaging and thermal design. RTL is less than 10% of the entire work.

2826  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 28, 2013, 05:03:25 PM

This.

In part, I partially understand some secrecy...they're building devices for a niche market, and would preferably like to create a monopoly. If, for example, BFL went about parading their chip specs, processes, and every other little detail, companies like Avalon could come along, scoop up that info, piece it together and create a slightly better product.

I'm not saying I agree with all the secrecy behind this project, but I am saying that I can understand some of it.
I am sure that Avalon team is so damn stupid Wink and their only and last hope is to "steal" BFL super secret technology Cheesy

Which absolutely means that they will ship after BFL unless BFL get bankrupt in a first place

Just for the reference all post is a joke - irony

No Drama here. What we Avalon customers need is a little more patience.
I think Avalon is making BFL lose money every time they have to compete.

When BFL ships and the Avalons device is revealed, they (BFL) will likely have to waste even more money trying to change their features and designs.

Right now all BFL has is overclocking ability. That's about it. It is also unknown what kind of overclocking ability or support they (BFL) will give out to miners of their hardware.

It is an interesting situation. You could allow Single SC to overclock up to 80GH/s. But that would dilute the purchase of Mini-rigs owners who plunked 30k on the table if a 1.2k purchase comes out to 1/10th or 1/15th of the speed of a Mini-rig.

Keep in mind the power supply in a Mini-rig is already defined. So there isn't much hope in seriously overclocking a Mini-Rig. As 24 boards would quickly consume the extra headroom built into the power supply.

I think it is not guaranteed that a mini-rig is always more efficient than a Single SC

qqagent: Yifu said they have shipped 40 units, and said around 12 units per day. We will know whether it is true or not very soon.

hpmany: It is probably true if these 40 units are shipped overseas. We could only verify one week later (20 Jan - 1 Feb). However, NGZ said he would first ship 2 or 3 units to media: Jeff for overseas, Shenyu for China. What Yifu said is contradicting to NGZ. Anyway, I wish Avalon successful.

Shenyu should be a prestigious Chinese bitcoiner.

At this moment, however, there's still no end-user report from China.

I am  神鱼(Shenyu)  ,please call me goldenfish

Thanks for your correction. Would you please to confirm whether anyone told you they are sending one of the first units to you? Have you got any information, such as a tracking number?

You can see all transactions in the "List of previous owners" section. The only transaction I made was the initial buy for 0.1 btc, which was on Jan 24.

Ok, so this is not a very classical pyramid scheme. But how do I know the OP is not pumping the price himself?

Yeah but you can use any name you like

Classical pyramid scheme

You don't understand how a pyramid scheme works.

If I were to buy the gem right now, only the previous owner would get coins - not everyone that came before him.

Ok, so this is not a very classical pyramid scheme. But how do I know the OP is not pumping the price himself?

Again, I have to emphasize that "export control" is not a founded reason because no one in China has received it.

That implies zero internal security, and we all know China is a heavy-surveillance state.

It would not be unheard of for the entire batch to await approval, foreign or domestic.  State security looks at the cryptography devices, and gives a yes-or-no answer for the entire hardware type.

I totally agree that China is a heavy-surveillance state. However, you probably only learn it from newspapers or films without much first-hand experience. I am pretty sure that no one in the Chinese government would care the domestic shipping of Avalon. If bitcoin had already caught their attention, the first thing they would do is to deny the access to bitcoin.org and this forum.

And don't forget, they shipped Icarus and Lancelot without ANY problem, domestic or overseas!
2832  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 27, 2013, 04:43:28 PM

Very existential.  Do I exist?  That is something I must ponder at length.

In the mean time, put down the crack pipe / energy drink and take a deep breath.  In the real world -- i.e. the world outside a teenaged troll's bedroom, the world outside the Internet -- manufacturing and shipping and customs and all that jazz can take weeks for a first run product.  This is not Amazon.com, where products have already been shipped to warehouses weeks or months before your order.

Cryptography is most definitely "export controlled", which means the government pays very close attention to it.  In fact, in the United States, cryptography software was considered "export grade munitions" until year 1996 or so.  Exporting PGP software to Canada required as much paperwork in 1990 as exporting a rocket laucher w/ rockets.

If in the worst case, Avalon is a scam, we cannot rightly be suspicious for a few more weeks yet.

It is still a race between BFL and Avalon at this point, and -- as we see -- any number of factors may impact the outcome.

P.S. DISCLAIMER: I don't know anything more than you guys do, on this thread, with regards to shipping, customs and arrival.  All of this is speculation, even if it is a bit more informed speculation than most in this thread Smiley

Again, I have to emphasize that "export control" is not a founded reason because no one in China has received it.

2834  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let's add up the KNOWN lost bitcoins on: January 27, 2013, 04:15:04 PM
Based on this thread and other sources, I have complied a list of all known loss: https://docs.google.com/a/ij.hk/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahdy3Je_nYdOdFVocm4yTzhZOW1waWd6SFJIVHUwYUE#gid=0

Events are included if coins are recoverable only with blockchain hard-fork, burst-forcing of private key, or exploiting flaws in bitcoin protocol (including hash algorithms and public key encryption). The following events are excluded:
  • Thefts which the coins are spendable by the thief
  • Loss of password to a service, where the service provider holds the private key
  • Sending coins to a wrong address, unless evidence shows that private key of the address is unknown to anyone
  • Without basic information, e.g. "I lose coins but do not want to explain"

Events are classified into 5 major categories:
  • Unverifiable claim: an user claimed he/she lost bitcoin without showing related transaction/address. The amount could be an estimation. The user may have recovered the coins without telling the forum.
  • Suspicious claim: an unverifiable claim without a matching event on the blockchain.
  • Verifiable claim: transaction id / address is known. If it is spent in the future, it will be removed from the list.
  • Permanent loss: usually for output with an unspendable script. It is not recoverable without a hard fork.
  • Address with unknown private key: the address is created without knowing the private key. It is recoverable only with brust-forcing or exploiting flaws in bitcoin protocol
Amounts are exact except for unverifiable claims.

Amount of lost coins:
  • Total confirmed loss = permanent loss + unknown private key: 2,731.84195637
  • Total unverifiable claimed loss: 59,465.76900000
  • Total verifiable claimed loss: 9,006.66100000
  • Total loss: 71,204.27195637
  • Total suspicious claims: 7,208.00000000
  • Total loss minus suspicious claims: 63,996.27195637

I am sure there are cases missing. Please help me to complete the list!

If you like this list, please give some tips to 1CiZPrEJdN4FJcqdLdgVLzT8tgCXxT5ion . Thank you!
2835  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 27, 2013, 02:00:24 PM
They have no tracking numbers because they never shipped. You always get the number the same day. Sometimes the info is not available but you get at least a number.

Actually that is not always the case, it depends on how they get the packages to DHL. In the example I quoted earlier, if you use an
HK forwarder and release the shippment from Hong Kong Port, then it's only once the packages are on the hands of DHL in HK that you can start tracking online (also depends on where you generate the paperwork before you even know the tracking number).

There are tons of things that can delay the white van driver to get to HK in the first place, customs would be one of them if the export papers are not in order.

Especially this being the first time they do such a shipment, there might be a bit of a learning curve and the pre-orders are the victim. Valuable time could get lost this way, but there is not much that can be done. I would also not start posting publicly about such a goof up, I'd try to fix things first...

I think there is a large culture difference between how US and Chinese companies handle their communications, either publish everything in the open with pictures and make loads of noise versus getting things done, ability and perseverance in the face of hardship.
Could it possibly be that they are unwilling to risk large numbers of ASIC devices and instead used Jeff and the Bitcoin foundations device as the pilot package to figure out where the troubles might be with customs?

If so, then they probably did ship the two packages but are waiting to see the results before risking the rest of the batch by putting it in transit through customs. Perhaps in the meantime they are building the other units and waiting for the results?

I have mentioned this once but it seems get ignored:

Those "customs", "government", "export license", "corrupt officials" excuse are just BS! No one in mainland China has reported receiving the machine! They don't need any kind of "license" or going through any inspection to ship WITHIN Chinese border!

What I dont understand, why does not Jeff Garzik ask DHL for the tracking id?

Holy fucking shit are all people here STUPID AND BLIND?

You can just ask DHL with your identity for tracking numbers personally via DHL , just need to phone them!

Its fucking suspicious that still Jeff Garzik is doing NOTHING, nor Avalon gives ANY confirmation or proof of shipment!
Lack of comunication KILLS economy of Avalon! We saw this already with BTCFPGA, the're dead!

No, BTCFPGA was killed because they accepted CC.
