I was musing today about where mining will end up, and how governments will be involved.  Any thoughts on the feasibility of this sort of government miner distribution (below) and whether there is a future market here?

This is a solution I feel the community is looking for - a small RaspberryPi-esque device which allows me to host a full node apart from my main PC. Ideally such a device would have some small amount of mining power, to distribute voting on the protocol rules throughout the network but I am not sure what type of adoption would be needed to take any percentage of the network hash rate away from institutional miners. But lets think about it.

In the end game mining chips are going to hit a ceiling and technology will advance slower than today.

Governments with a vested interest in Bitcoin may find it beneficial to distribute these slow-hashing nodes to the population and provide a tax credit to pay for part of the electricity. This could use previous generation tech and still make an impact:

Current hash rate: 15,000,000 Gh/s
Population of france: 65,700,000

To get half the network hash rate each person would need to poses ~250Mh.

About 1 AM USB Block Erupter seems like a lot but as asics catch up to current chip-fab technology improvements will slow: the previous gen tech will have an impact much longer and be cheaper.
What other benefits might this have? Well France would secure 50% of mining fees for its population. The network (and France) would be more protected from the attack of another nation state. Decisions about the protocol would be distributed away from mining pools and miners, further increasing network trust.

So many things improbable in this scenario its really not worth addressing them all. If a gov had a vested interest in btc you could bet your ass they wouldn't waste money giving out rasp pies with usb block erupters. The whole point of btc is to avoid some sort of complex gov controlled scenario just as you described.

Amazing that people aren't doing anything, even though he likely stole millions of dollars.

How dare you count MY bitcoins as stolen? They aren't stolen until *I* say they are stolen. Count your own damn bitcoins.

Again, you and some others have made YOUR OWN decision that Ukyo stole the coins. I am more patient, I have the luxury of time BECAUSE I followed the public (and obvious to anyone that thinks for a few minutes about what and where they are investing) advice not to risk more than I can afford to lose. Time will tell ME if my bitcoins were stolen, but some people here will present "facts" their way, by including everyone's coins in their determination.

In my god-damned AWESOME universe, it's possible for someone to make a mistake, someone else to give him the benefit of the doubt, and for him to redeem himself. If he did something illegal or stupid, in my universe he'd go to jail or get the chance to fix things.

In your awful SHITTY universe, you'll threaten and retaliate and ruin any chances you have of getting your money back. Some fart-for-brains is going to go too far. If Ukyo did something stupid like gamble people's money, he won't go to jail, he'll be threatened with baseball bats and probably never recover and pay anyone anything else back.

Also, karma is an unstoppable bitch, be warned (if that's all you understand).

Just because you don't care about your 5 satoshis doesn't make this less of a scam. In your world idiots get taken for a ride by people who want their money.

In the real world when someone is holding 5 million usd worth of customer funds then loses it all, there are serious consequences.

I don't think it's possible that ukyo simply made a mistake. Maybe many mistakes but there is too much bullshit to be a single mistake.

By all means keep waiting for your coins which may or may not return. But relying on the perpetrated scammer as your only hope is not exactly the smartest idea imo.

2845  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 280x GPUS - Gauging Interest - $50 off retail price unlimited supply on: January 10, 2014, 12:23:17 AM
Misleading title. $50 off retail would be $250.. I see these cards selling many places for around $300.

An accurate title would be "$50 off the most expensive 280x you can find"

Really?  If you are serious, I would love to see where I could see where these cards are selling for $300.  I guess I may not have been looking hard enough.  At newegg, the cheapest you will find is $400, and the model that I will be providing is $420.  The most expensive one is actually $480, so the title would say $100 off retail price if I was using the most expensive one I could find.

Shopblt.com has a decent selection on cards although only preorders are available. Have never ordered from them but they seem legit.

It seems more likely to me that you saw batch1 closing and took advantage of the fact that minersource had not been notified/updated yet.
Which is of course complete BS as the closing announcement from BA wasn't posted until Jan 3rd.

You're right I spoke out of my ass. I thought it was announced on the forums jan1 but it is in fact jan3 so you are entitled to be included in batch 1.
2849  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Black Arrow announces 28nm 100Ghash Bitcoin ASIC from $1.49/Ghash on: January 08, 2014, 11:42:11 PM
i placed an order on 1-1-2014 for an X1 on minersource.net and after payment confirmation it said "## Delivery Date This is a PRE-ORDER, now on Round 2 Batch 1"

I just went and had a look a few min ago at my order and now it say "## Delivery Date This is a PRE-ORDER, now on Batch 2 Round 1"

WTF? Have I just been shafted?

I did a screen cap of the original back on 1-1-2014.

What's the significance of  Round 2 Batch 1  vs  Batch 2 Round 1?

Okay, same thing happened to me. Saying I am a little disappointed is an understatement. I would have considered differently had I know my orders were being placed into batch 2 when I ordered.
On 1/3/2014 BA posted on their site a news article that said:

Quote
Batch 1 closed

Batch 1 has been closed.

All orders paid from 1st of January will be dispatched around 1st of May 2014.
https://www.blackarrowsoftware.com/store/index.php?dispatch=news.list

That was posted 2 days after the cutoff date so it's kind of not fair. If it were me I would warn people in advance of cutoff dates even if only a few days in advance, rather than being retrospective. However I ordered from miniersource.net not BA, and their site clearly said batch 1 at the time, so that was the offer.

I placed two orders on the site on the first of January. When i was placing my orders minersource had said that they would be part of batch 1 round 2 that ships in March. Then a couple days later the BA website states the thing about batch two and sure enough my orders are now saying they are part of batch 2. It seems some what fraudulent to leave something up saying "orders place today will be part of batch 1 round 2" when orders placed that day were NOT part of batch 1 round 2.

It seems more likely to me that you saw batch1 closing and took advantage of the fact that minersource had not been notified/updated yet.

Finally someone doing something about one of these scam companies.

How will this affect others wishing to get a refund but don't have the time or resources to take legal action? Will the judge force all refunds in btc should that be the final decision or just the 1 refund of the guy suing?
2852  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: BlackArrow => Scam or not? on: January 07, 2014, 10:27:25 PM
The guys from BlackArrow and CardReaderFactory are probably not scammers, but I question their ethics, as CardReaderFactory sells the "world's smallest bluetooth magnetic stripe readers" - have a look at product MSRv008.  I'm not sure why else someone would drop $2000 on this device other than to build an ATM skimming device.

They may not be scammers, but they like to sell parts to the scammers  Smiley

Interesting. Is it possible that it could be used
for some sort of mobile card reader?

X-1 renders are up at BA site

Anyone know if this still includes a built in lcd display? I don't see it in the 3d rendering.
What, are you expecting crude lines of text to be able to recognize an LCD in 2014? I think the logo looks more appropriate.

Oh is the logo the lcd display? Honestly thought it was just a logo but if it is the display it looks good to me.

Hm, I'm looking at a Litecoin rig on eBay. It consumes 900 Watts for 2.2 MH so at the end of the month there's hardly any profit left after paying my electricity bill  Huh

How much do you pay for electricity??

Matt, do you still expect to start shipping 24th?
Absolutely. Everything is coming together nicely.

Already taped out?
2858  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: BlackArrow => Scam or not? on: January 07, 2014, 05:44:18 AM
The way I see it is you can either pre-order and maybe get a really good deal or maybe a shitty deal with a ton of delays, or you can buy someones asic in hand for 3 times what they paid for it (also they probably used it to mine and the first week or two is the most profitable for any asic.

Risk vs reward.

Can we get some tagged pics? Like the original post with a piece of paper saying cannabit. New pics look good if you can prove it is your work and not just some random pics from google images.

Is there any advantage for me to move from Havelock to Direct shares?
What is the benefit for me?

Yeah, i was just wondering what will happen in the case when Havelock staff get access to my account, then they'll sell my shares on the market and quickly transfer BTC out ... I have 2nd factor set up, shareholder list is regularly send to TATi, but its not immune for inside attacks, right? I will get my shares back and the unfortunate buyer will lose them? I don't think so ... besides that, the direct shares were NOT AVAILABLE during the IPO period, we didn't have an option to chose directs... and now we early investors and believers in NEOBEE are suppose to pay fees for transfer.

That doesn't make sense. If havelock wanted to they would just steal all users balances then claim its for legal reasons but you cant know about it (worked for bitfunder). Why would they trade your shares for another users btc and then withdraw? Your shares should be safe on havelock as long as TAT is keeping good records.
