People worrying about open-sourcing DarkSend should stop a minute and consider the whole OSS ecosystem.

Windows is for secretaries, marketing departments, and gamers. The other 99% of planet Earth's computing infrastructure runs linux. Which, as you may have heard, is open source.

We need to do it right. DRK already has marketshare, established (but evolving) infrastructure, and is real world tested. Clones and competitors are going to need divine intervention to come remotely close. And Evan has this little thing called a work ethic. Some of you will know or remember what that is.

Plus, we're all just too goddamn pretty to not win.  Kiss

I hope Evan can work in IP obfuscation, as Anonymint suggested. Then it would be hard to challenge DRK in any foreseeable way.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this what I2P does?

Heh, haven't seen so much commandline since my old gentoo days.  Cheesy
edit: updated!

I'm glad I'm still holding my darkcoins Grin Grin

not selling under 5$

I am seriously not selling any under 500 USD and then just some to hedge my investment, and directly for fiat not interested in BTC.

EDIT:  Just think about the real world applications:  Political campaign donations, transfering wealth out of authoritarian regimes, buying/selling regulated goods, tax efficiencies, regular privacy, the list goes on and on. We are at the very beginning.
I'd be pretty amazed if the USD is worth anything much by the time we achieve bitcoin parity. (18 months tops is my guess.) By then you'll be able to buy your new toys directly with DRK, or trading it for Roubles or CNY.

One note though: Whether DRK will be profitable to mine or not, will not only depend on the block reward but also coin price. If, by the time X11 asics come, there are like 50-80-100 x11 coins, it might be the case that many of them might be more profitable to mine. The large number of x11 coins, is, in a sense, a guarantee for ASICs appearing at some point.

Sure, an abundance of X11 coins would make ASICs appear for X11. But, if none of them are pointed at a DRK pool, we still have The Bomb scenario, but then ANYONE could drop it.
How viable is it to somehow make it so that all the X11 networks are actually one network?  You mine DRK, you shore up the networks of other coins as well.

Hopefully that makes sense.
Personally, I wouldn't want to prop up the 'competition,' however laughable they might be. Darkcoin will win on its own merits, to hell with the rest, frankly.

edit: unless they are paying us shitloads of money. In DRK.

Haha, I was about to post this, almost word for word. eduffield taking the time to get it right, plus news of I2P and ring sigs should, in a rational market, have sent the price UP. As it is, just a few of the stupider monkeys getting shaken out of the tree, so it's all good.

No one is getting "shaken out". Shaken out happens when people give up on something. This is all Daytrading 102. Some really smart people are improving their positions. It will not work out for everyone, but having sizable BTC positions has a significant advantage in the altcoin world. It is not all about BTC->Fiat->BTC.

 Huh
If you're winning then you're a clever monkey, but you're winning at the expense of the less clever monkeys. Practically, day trading is a zero sum game, and the stupid monkeys (the majority) lose.

About fiat I don't really care, except that what fiat I have I'm converting to tangible commodities. Beans, bullets and bandages, baby.  Wink

from reading comments on darkcointalk.org, I finally realized how to check and see if your masternode is running all right.  grab a copy of your debug.log in your /.darkcoind file and find a section that shows all the masternodes.  Find your masternode and it's corresponding number (position on the list)  It seems if you stay connected, you keep your position on the list.

Now open a search and search for "winner your-number", like "winner 14" and if you've been elected a winner, your masternode is functioning!  I found one of my masternodes won 6 times, and the other won 2 times, so there can be great variance Smiley

Thanks for this! My MNs are all convinced they are real life MNs and are behaving exactly as they should, but two of the damn things don't show up in any 'masternode list' except their own.  Angry

bad things happen.

things get delayed.

It's funny how people have different perspectives on this.

I'm a software developer.

When I heard he was delaying the launch I thought GOOD ONE !

It was too good to be true that a beta test go off like clockwork with no problems and issues to be gone back to think about and recode. It was sounding to start a bit unreal.

But now that this delay has been announced I feel comfortable again that there's something real going on here. Ironically that's put me back in the market for more coin. Stuck an order in at 48 and got it filled at the bottom end of the dump.

In addition to that, from a technical perspective (as opposed to f*cking price which is meaningless at this stage in a project like this) you've got:

[1] - the developer being transparent and having the bottle to come on here un-anonymously and participate in often adversarial exchanges

[2] - the fact that they are full-time employed by this project

[3] - the fact that he's announced (albeit informally) that ring signatures are on the roadmap

This coin's got it all for me, at least as far as any crypto project could have at this stage in the game. I don't see what else they could be doing.

Haha, I was about to post this, almost word for word. eduffield taking the time to get it right, plus news of I2P and ring sigs should, in a rational market, have sent the price UP. As it is, just a few of the stupider monkeys getting shaken out of the tree, so it's all good.

what I dont understand is WHY OH WHY SO MANY PEOPLE MINING WHEN ITS NOT PROFITABLE TO MINE AT ALL??

I refuse to mine, and therefore support, shitcoins.

Might make me a fool in the eyes of some, but luckily I'm in a position not to give a damn.   Grin
2850  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: May 12, 2014, 12:28:35 PM
I am not sure if I understand the concern.  Price, difficulty (i.e. net hashrate), and popularity go hand and hand since this is a free market.  If DRK becomes popular enough for "govthugs" to even entertain the idea of developing private ASICs then the price must be MUCH higher and thus profitable to mine (even at a 5 coin reward).

You're still thinking like a rational, decent person.

Guv is not motivated by profit. It doesn't care about the price. It sees a threat to control of it's slaves and it will spend any amount of money stolen from those slaves to eliminate the threat. It makes way more money stealing, taxing, feeing. It'll blow 50mil of everyone else's money on a rack of custom ASICs to destroy DRK just for the sake of destroying DRK. It's not about profit.

If your coin doesn't move up to ASICs, you're handing "them" The Bomb that "they" will use to destroy your coin. The only way to defend against The Bomb is to be The Bomb. If your Value/mine rate keeps ASICs down, then your coin will be nuked by a custom, private, not-concerned-with-profit-or-cost ASIC. Period.

Tell me, what part of, "A one line change in the code renders ASICs instantly useless," am I wrong about?

You're not wrong about it. You're 100% right. I can write one line of code that will make the client send everyone's coins to my address... I can write one line of code to do a lot of things.

You're just not considering that it will destroy all trust in the dev/coin if it is done. You can't make huge changes in functionality like that down the road. This coin has morphed enough already... It can't afford to jack around any more. I don't care if its 1 line or 500 lines. Such a serious and fundamental change will fuck trust in the coin.

As with the coin cap choices that have finally been finalized, I beg, pick something and stick with it. You can't change something like this and expect the project to live. We have enough doofus trolls in here with their half-baked arguments who don't understand what they're talking about... We don't need to give them an ACTUAL reason to troll...

Code gets updated all the time. Everywhere, for everything. Nothing bad happens, in fact (usually) the opposite.

Implement a wallet autoupdate feature, and 99% of users wont even notice. Miners might have to download a new version of sgminer or whatever, but I don't see them complaining about it if it defeats ASICs and keeps them in business.

Nobody gets jacked around at all, except the ASIC developers, who've just wasted $millions.

DRK has to remain decentralised. What the eventual approach to that might be I don't know, but changing some code is nothing to be frightened of. A dev that was afraid to make changes would be something to worry about.

Beta should be left to people who know what the hell they are doing, not a thread full of clueless whiners who haven't seen a piece of code in their lives... Those people need something EVENTUALLY, but they are a major pain in the ass when you're trying to get something of the ground. Let them whine that they didn't get to instamine anything, whatever. Boohoo, grow brains enough to participate in a useful way then maybe you'll get your day 1 money hose. Kinda like masternodes... If you don't have the brains to set it up, you don't get paid. It puts all you lazy contribution-less Windows Proof of Stakers out on your ass; where you belong. If you can't contribute anything useful, you don't get to be there for day 1. Working as intended. Bite my shiny metal ass.
This is harsh, but sometimes the truth hurts.  Grin

For 140 MNs now the payment will be 7,814285714285714 drk
About a week ago I think I predicted 200 MNs by Wednesday and 500 by 21st.

I wish there were mode details on the 'voting' system. By what criteria exactly are masternodes selected? Or is it mostly random?

I think operator panache should be factored in.  Cool

See what I mean ?

The 4 hour MA has stayed wide to the upside. The EMA has just flipped wide after threatening to converge.

The 4hr MACD is now almost asymptotic with the signal line after the prospect of a fairly brisk puncture a day ago.

1 hr MACD histogram is still a bit bearish but converging all the same - maybe 12 to 24 hours away from a level off / turn around.

This doesn't look like an impending plummet to 50 to me. Looks more like people are sh*t scared of losing their coins and are clinging to them for dear life.
Glad you lapsed back into English at the end there.  Wink

I think the big price rises (which we haven't seen yet) will come from people who want to move big chunks of money around privately. They aren't going to do any tea leaf / tarot card / goat entrail graph analysis, they're just going to buy as much DRK as they need and use it.

We just need to get their attention, so they know this tool is available to them.

edit: hey InternetApe, any progress on those DRK credit card thingies? I will pay upfront for 100 of them. I'm going to put 1 DRK on each and give them away to my kids, their friends, whoever. I could do it with USB sticks but the other things look cooler.

The Bomb...
...can be rendered instantly useless by a one line change of code.

And that one line change of code should be sat ready somewhere if it's ever needed.

Masternode

After
18. run masternode
Code:

darkcoind masternode start mypassphrase

The info: sucesfully started masternode

How can I clare all log?

Any more command?
If you mean get rid of your passphrase sitting there in the terminal, make sure you have done this:
Code:
cd ~/
ln -sf /dev/null .bash_history
(clears terminal history)
Then close the terminal window, then if you want open another one, and log in again. Up-arrow key should now not cycle through your previous commands.

Check status with
Code:
darkcoind masternode list | grep 'enter.your.ip.here'
and
Code:
darkcoind getinfo
and
Code:
tail -f ~/.darkcoin/debug.log
