2861  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Moving to a new laptop on: August 17, 2022, 08:13:50 AM
1. It says "Download ThomasV's PGP Key" and nothing else. There is no step by step guide to how this is actually done. But surely it is important to give as much information as possible on a subject where security is supposed to be so very, very, very important?

Does this mean Download ThomasV's signature from the Electrum website? Or are they separate things?

You need ThomasV (and most probably others' too) keys, you can find them on Electrum download page, just before "Sources and Binaries".

2. The guide has Redundant links to ThomasV's public key. But why have links if they are redundant? Or is there another meaning of the word "redundant"? Redundant normally means "no longer in use".

You must have been confusing "redundant" with "obsolete". Redundant means duplicates are available in more places which, in this case, is very good (in case that hackers may replace one website, let's say).

3. The guide does not cover some important points.

Make sure you downloaded Electrum and the signature asc file from the same row.

* Search for kleopatra pgp, download, install
* import ThomasV and others' public keys you downloaded (double click on asc and wait for a window show up)
* optionally make yourself a key and certify those imported keys
* double click electrum's asc file (make sure the downloaded exe is in the same folder), see what the result window tell (if you did the optional step, the window will be green).
2862  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can making a wallet make you rich? on: August 17, 2022, 08:04:13 AM
I've forgot to say and add that it's mostly on the custodial wallets. I've used a handful of them in the past years and had a comparison to the current network fee and to those wallets that I've used before and there's really sort of an additional to the base fee.

Although the market wasn't really that bad at all during those times and those fees weren't that much. Eventually, I've stopped using them and sticked to the non-custodial ones.

Then sorry if I was too harsh; as I said the "equation" is much different in case of custodian services. Also those usually get together with other services offered, squeezing some more cents here and there (like maybe getting tx fee for transferring funds between addresses of the same platform, but nothing actually done on-chain, hence all the fee money kept).

Just nowadays we advise everybody move off custodial platforms. Now the trend seems to be to oppose as much as possible the KYC and also be aware that "not your keys, not your coins", which all mean going away from custodial wallets.

There are very few niches available imho for a new custodian wallet. Maybe LN. It will not be easy for OP to start such a platform. He may even need backing from a financial institution and then he may become employee, which is far from the "getting rich" idea.

(it's good that you posted this here in B&H board since you wouldn't like the responses that you'll get in the Development board)

Well said.

Okay, but it needs further elaboration

No matter how is he elaborating it; code that would somehow allow reverting a confirmed transaction will never go through the consensus, you know that. Because no matter what one party is telling, getting other party's money without his consent is stealing. And we all know that if a party doesn't answer or doesn't prove anything, that doesn't necessarily means he doesn't exist.
Of course, you know this and wanted to be nice with OP, I know, I still feel that this needed to be said. Not for you, for OP.

Do you also have some antivirus/security app installed/running? Some come with their own firewall, maybe you've missed that?
2865  Other / Off-topic / Re: Another miner hidden in PyPI package on: August 16, 2022, 03:32:01 PM
I do not do that much with python so I have no idea how bad the real situation is.

I don't do much python either, but I've seen that quite a big amount of bitcoin related tools are made in python (Electrum, some flavors its servers, block explorers, wallet recovery, ...)
Maybe somebody tells us whether somebody with not much of linux skills might have gotten this on his computer just because he tried to compile/install some tools.
2866  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Help - Hardware Wallet on: August 16, 2022, 03:25:24 PM

Quite shame for so many good answers. From what I see, I think that OP was an one-time poster whose main goal was not to find info on the HW, instead get as many people click onto his ref link (link that was removed by a mod).

I recommend SeedSignerSmiley

+1
I agree, it's one of the best options nowadays, by far.
2867  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lost Bitcoins on: August 16, 2022, 02:22:47 PM
Once all this is done the bitcoin developers can credit the possesser of the public address with a new private address issued in a hash that says they possess the amount of bitcoins that was lost. This can work and should be implemented asap.

Sorry, but such claim only shows that you have 0 understanding on how bitcoin works.
And no, this is not how Bitcoin works and no matter what the devs do, no matter how much would they want to have this done, this cannot be implemented (or, more exactly, even if implemented, will never go live)
2868  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Preev.com - DNS hosting service has expired. on: August 16, 2022, 11:17:54 AM
The regular price for .net on registrar (Namesilo) $11.79
the domain was free to register until I bought it  Wink. Yap, that sounds strange.

Congratulations! Nice business and I like to know such an important name stays at somebody active and trusted.

Still, I am not that happy with the choice of the script, I find others better (one example would be https://preecs.coolstorage.org/ that makes the average of 3 exchanges, keeps the price visible on the title bar and also updates the price regularly without refresh). Of course, I expect you've picked fast one script that looked good and in time you'll get to the best; and it's not that bad either, I'm just overly picky.

btw. Why preev? is it an abbreviation for something specific?

IMO it was thought randomly and owner decide to use it since it's short and has only one syllable.

My guess has always been that's some sort of PRicE EValuation (and obviously a short and cheap name picked)
2869  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is bitcoin bear market over? on: August 16, 2022, 11:05:14 AM
We will know the bear market is over only after some time it has ended and the price starts "flying" upwards.
Right now we are in the uncertainty area: the bear market may or may not have ended.
I expect we will know for sure before Christmas.

PS. Your poll is missing "I don't know/I am not sure"

Thing is i use a Quick access wallet online
 https://wallet.mymonero.com/
So how am i suppose to update an online wallet ?? Shouldnt the online wallet been updated by its self? The issue is as you mention probobly with the big update..

It's not you who has to update, obviously; it's the website owner who has to update. But being the most known (imho) online service for Monero wallet, I'd expect they did and the exchange didn't. However, as I said, ask the support. Ask the support of MyMonero; ask the support of the exchange.
2871  Economy / Economics / Re: How micro payments can help to alleviate global poverty on: August 16, 2022, 10:46:43 AM
Properly equipping the high skilled users with adequate tools, would empower them to create better systems for the less exposed citizens.

While Android development allows one make his tools compatible with (very) old devices, those old devices may not even support the newest Google Play services, hence no need to spend the time.
There are many phone makers who sell pretty cheap devices having not too old Android - there the devs could work by making apps much less resource hungry (!) to acomodate to the cheap devices.
And if we discuss about "dumb-phones", then the apps are flashed with the OS, afaik, hence the devs cannot do anything.

So from what I see, it's not that much the devs can do, even with "proper tools". Still, paying more attention to the resources would be nice.
2872  Other / Meta / Re: [SURVEY] Who thinks the Lemmings should also be removed as Merit Sources? on: August 16, 2022, 10:36:50 AM
No - the merit sources should stay as is.

This is my vote (too). The drama about Trust is one thing, meriting posts that deserve it is another thing. Yes, sometimes people merit posts expressing views on the trust system, and yes, people tend to merit the posts expressing views similar to their own instead of good posts, still, the merit system is imho in a much better shape now that it was 1 year ago (just a random date in the past) and I don't want to risk making it worse (we do need the merit sources).

And back to the Trust system, that one may need improvements. People removing themselves from DT1 or clearing their trust lists are just a symptom of all that. And those are valid choices; people should not be punished for that.

Edit:
The topic title already gave away a prejudiced view from you

I don't agree with OP, still, I find it a valid question. Not really worthy for a poll, still, a valid question.
2873  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Street Selfie? Why all these crazy requirements in the name of KYC verification? on: August 16, 2022, 09:30:13 AM
Remember, back then, all that most services required were the front and back part of your ID or passport before they started asking for simple selfies.

Since then they've noticed that sending pictures can easily mean nothing at all, since everything can be faked with enough skill.
So what they do is making everything more difficult. Which was proven (so many times) to be plain stupid, since it makes the life of normal people more difficult, make everything more costly and, as we all know, will most probably not stop the (ever growing number of) scammers.
2874  Economy / Economics / Re: How micro payments can help to alleviate global poverty on: August 16, 2022, 08:00:48 AM
[~snip~] I have seen people using cellphones to make digital payments using a centralized payment method, called MPESA ...so even with very limited resources, people are still able to make transactions. (They charge cellphones with small solar panels and/or petrol generators for the community)

We (1st world countries) should find ways to make payments on Bitcoin easier and more user friendly, so that payment on ALL phones can be possible. (not just fancy smart phones)  Roll Eyes

I use centralized payment methods (Revolut), I use mobile banking, and I use Bitcoin.
Sending money through centralized system is very easy, since the centralized system can always find simple ways to get in touch with its other users, and if a bad transaction happens, they can even undo it, since.. it's centralized. Compared to that, mobile banking is already overly complicated (even card payment is).

Bitcoin is - or should be - on the same level as mobile banking. You know the recipient addresses and you send an amount.
LN should be like credit card.

Now, as I said, centralized payment systems are much easier, no matter what we simplify. Giving them a centralized system based on Bitcoin is not really a step forward (not your keys, not your coins). And if we add on top the fact that Bitcoin comes with various fees (and I talk about conversion from/to fiat) and its price is fluctuating a lot... I am not sure it will help them. They don't afford to lose any penny.
2875  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can making a wallet make you rich? on: August 16, 2022, 07:47:37 AM
Most wallets earn from commission through additional from the fee that they're asking to their users. It's aside from the network or transaction fee, they're adding a bit from there.

I have a feeling you have no idea what you're talking about. Unless it's a custodian service (which is not really a proper wallet, since it's not your keys it's working with), a wallet doesn't charge extra fees. So all the fees are miner fees and the wallet developer earns nothing off it.
Custodian services do ask you to overpay for the fee and many make money off that, but, as I said, those are not really wallets (although I know that many tend to use even exchanges as wallet services).
2876  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: crypto that was never recived on: August 16, 2022, 07:43:01 AM
Where is the problem, the exchange site never got the monero it seems? But why is my wallet pending the amount and why wont it bounce back?

When you spend Monero it may take many minutes until the rest of your balance is properly spendable (including the change).
Even more, not long ago Monero had a big update (possibly hard fork). If the wallet you're using or the exchange didn't update, one of them may be working with the wrong blockchain.
Since you've been using 3rd party services, you'll have to ask their support and track your problem. From what I see, it's not an issue of Bitcoin or Monero, it's some service's problem.
2877  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Moving to a new laptop on: August 15, 2022, 08:41:54 PM
Can anyone provide a link to a handy step by step guide to "migrating your Electrum wallet to a new PC"?

You restore the wallet using the seed phrase. Basically that should be it.

What happens if I download Electrum onto my new laptop? Will my Bitcoin now be visible on both computers or do I make this one my "single wallet" as it were..?

Since the coins are not in the wallet, they're "on the blockchain" or "on the network" (overly simplified explanation), yes, both wallets should see (and work with) the same funds.
After you can see properly the funds on the new wallet, you can remove the old one if you want to. Or not. As you prefer.

I will add that Electrum on Windows is just as safe as your Windows system (so malware is a real threat). So if you have meaningful funds in your wallet you may consider getting a hardware wallet and move your funds there.
Also, with the wallet on 2 PCs, there are 2 places that can get malware/hack (also you have to be overly careful if you ever want to sell/give away the older PC, some people do know how to recover even removed wallets).
So another worthy "path" could also be to make a new wallet on the new PC and send the funds there (but, again, I prefer the path of hardware wallet, which in my case can be used with Electrum).
2878  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can making a wallet make you rich? on: August 15, 2022, 02:19:31 PM
What if go the other way? Offer a crypto wallet to the community for a one-time payment or a subscription model. In this case, the creator will not need to collect user data for subsequent sale, and users will be spared from "spying" on their data. I think it's a win-win situation. Personally, I have not heard of such wallets for which you would have to pay, as for the purchase of any software. In this case, developers will need to have an impeccable reputation so that users can fully trust them, especially for their money.

Since there are already free wallets in use, I don't think that there will be users willing to pay for such a subscription.
So unless the wallet has some very good and useful features nobody else has implemented (situation that probably cannot last long), why would someone pay for a product he can get for free?
2879  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: Posta Romana lanseaza o colectie de 160 NFT on: August 15, 2022, 08:48:42 AM

Ooooo, felicitari, s-au aranjat in sfarsit lucrurile! Doamne-ajuta!
