2924  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin on slashdot... again. on: June 12, 2011, 02:03:30 AM
The volatile market has gotten the attention of slashdot. Slashdot readers are pretty much optimal bitcoin crowd. I'm sure the publicity will be good. This might also account for the influx of trolls. They normally get modded on slashdot, so their having a field day here.

where?
2925  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / mtgox explanation one more time ... on: June 12, 2011, 01:02:11 AM
"The price you buy or sell bitcoins for is up to you. If there is no one that will currently accept your offer then your offer will be saved and the trade will happen once someone comes along and accepts your offer."

this from mtgox website  - when someone accepts your offer how is the money for BTC done?
2926  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HELP!!!!!1 on: June 10, 2011, 09:34:15 PM

2927  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0 Connections on: June 10, 2011, 08:47:30 PM
For the last several days I've been trying to connect to "the network" with the standard bitcoin client (0.3.20.1), but it's stuck at 0 connections, 125364 blocks.

I saw that there was a version 0.3.22 released, but I didn't think I had to upgrade to stay connected.

How can I help my poor client connect?  I've got a few coins floating around in transactions my client hasn't downloaded yet, and would like to send them somewhere else!
Upgrading to the latest version may help since the IRC bootstrapping mechanism was changed. The other standard advice is to (a) forward port 8333 in your router and/or (b) add some fallback nodes.

hmm that port 8333 might have worked as I have 2 connections now - I also upgraded the software Smiley I suppose we'll see.
2928  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Uh ok Bitcoin Client doesn't work ... ? on: June 10, 2011, 08:35:14 PM
It's probably your university firewall blocking it. I'm in the UK and it's working fine for me. If you can connect through your mobile phone, give that a try.

When you say mobile phone you mean the bitcoin client or  mybitcoin.com   ?
2929  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0 Connections on: June 10, 2011, 08:30:56 PM
I have the same thing going on Sad  Huh
2930  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Uh ok Bitcoin Client doesn't work ... ? on: June 10, 2011, 08:15:08 PM
Ok....so if people can't receieve transactions how is Bitcoins going to work ?

Grant it I'm at a University so could be a firewall but here is the story....

I got tips sent to me to my payment address nothing has shown up in 3 days.... :/

I did get some from the free faucet of 0.02 which did arrive but I wanted to send it to mybitcoin.com  so I did and it hasn't arrived :/

seems like bitcoins is flawed to me ?

My info is:  0 connections / 128223 blocks / 2 transactions

how is bitcoin going to go mainstream if people can't use it ? Huh
2931  Economy / Marketplace / Re: What exacatly is mtgox? on: June 10, 2011, 04:57:09 AM
Partly because of PayPal freezing accounts, but mostly because it's way too easy to scam someone via PayPal.  IE, I send you my Bitcoins (or Mt. Gox USD, for that matter), and you send me your PayPal dollars but then file a claim, and PayPal will almost certainly side with you and reverse the transaction.  It's happened way too frequently in the past couple of weeks to even take the risk of accepting PayPal for anything.

I think I'm getting 2 things confused.

There is mtgox which helps with the buy/sell part between 2 people but also mtgox can hold your cash/mt.gox usd to faciliate the transaction ? in doing so the seller/buyer really though have a cash transaction take place through paypal from mtgox right ?  this is where the charge could be disputed/fraudlent    am I right ?
2932  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Explain Mt gox to me ? on: June 10, 2011, 04:42:18 AM
MtGox doesn't allow paypal.. You deposit actual cash, from Dwolla or LR.

Not sure how you brought paypal in to it..

tito I thought it paypal was the transaction between buyer and seller on mtgox ....thats how it got in!
2933  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Explain Mt gox to me ? on: June 10, 2011, 02:45:57 AM
So let me get this straight mtgox lets 2 users exchange/buy BTC one has the money the other has the BTC but Mtgox has no irresponsibility for the transaction?
The funds are on mtgox, they just update a database with the numbers for the trades of their customers. mtgox doesn't "let" 2 users exchange currency, they effectively exchange their order values between them.

So if I want to buy BTC, I put 30$ on the site, it shows up in my mtgox account, then I place a buy order or accept a sell order for 1 btc / 30 $ and the currency amounts get switched, I get the BTC, the other guy gets the dollars, on-site.

Ok, starting to sound a little more clearer. So there is still that "risk" that the user buying BTC with paypal won't fullfill his or her side  right ?

Bomba - thanks for taking your time on this thing called the magical forum to reply to this nooooob ...Smiley   So there is  chance that someone would just do a chargeback on their paypal after you paid them right ?
That is another question that is completely different than the title and initial questions, and on this magical forum you will see everyone say: DO NOT USE PAYPAL.

Such is the case that I agree, unless you want to buy bitcoins and run a trust check against the party that sells the bitcoins, DO NOT USE PAYPAL.

Because yes, as you assume, you can chargeback paypal or your credit card company/issuer/bank.

Do you know what's wrong with a trade if the paypal sellers charges back his payment?

You use "MtGox USD" on the site itself, which (as the name suggests) is equivalent to regular USD but just on on the site for trading.  The challenge is getting from MtGox USD to some other form (like PayPal).  Almost nobody does MtGoxUSD-to-PayPal anymore, but you can use Dwolla to get it into a US account, or a bank wire from Europe.

In short, yeah it's a bit of a hassle getting money into and out of Mt. Gox, but it's the best we've got right now.

Thanks!

"The challenge is getting from MtGox USD to some other form (like PayPal).  Almost nobody does MtGoxUSD-to-PayPal anymore"

Because Paypal freezes the withdraw from mtgox usd  --> Paypal ?  that is what the big stir is right now ?

It's ok guys, I got this newbie, don't worry, I won't lash out on him... let me write up my reply...

https://mtgox.com/ -- go to the homepage of the site your are referring to. Read the first paragraph:

Mt Gox is an exchange. It allows you to trade US Dollars (USD) for Bitcoins (BTC) or Bitcoins for US Dollars with other Mt Gox users. You set the price you want to buy or sell your BTC for.

This answers your first two questions. From the first paragraph!

https://mtgox.com/trade -- this is a page that shows the buy and sell forms, you don't need to log in to see it, and it appears on the menu after you navigate from the homepage. It also states this:

Mt Gox charges a small fee (0.65%) for each trade.

There, now you know how mtgox gets paid.

https://mtgox.com/users/addFunds -- What about paypal and trust? Well there is no paypal here, you need to use serious banking services, like banks, Liberty Reserve, checks or cash.

All questions answered by simply visiting the website for two minutes, instead of making a thread and waiting for hours for the answers to magically get delivered. How amazing is this thing called a forum!!!

Mt Gox does NOT operate with PayPal at all... yes it's an exchange and they charge a fee on each transaction.

backopy - thanks for the reply.  So how do people pay another user cash for BTC then if paypal isn't involved?
2938  Economy / Marketplace / What exacatly is mtgox? on: June 10, 2011, 01:24:07 AM
This has probably been asked a lot so you can just direct me to a good source that works ...

So I'm pretty new and want to get involved but what exactly is Mt Gox?

Is it an exchange between users to buy BTC ? and if so how the users be trusted at all since paypal has a nasty charge back policy.

How does mt.gox get paid?

I'm sure I'll have others once people reply thank you!
