2981  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-09-01] OpenBazaar Beta Version for Linux and OSX Has Launched! on: September 01, 2014, 04:35:05 PM
Going to have to give this a try.
2982  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Some major flaws about Bitcoin raised in this video clip- can anyone explain? on: September 01, 2014, 03:27:26 PM
I think the easy explanation is that he doesn't know as much about it as he thinks he does.
2983  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Falls Below $500: The Start of Another Price Decline? on: September 01, 2014, 03:10:54 PM
Here we go with the fud articles. A price decline? I guess it depends on your time frame.

And btw, the post format is at the top of the section and this doesn't follow it FYI.

2984  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Keeping Transaction Costs Down on: August 31, 2014, 03:39:31 PM
...
Why don't you just create your own raw transactions and use bitcoind to sign them? (ie. DON'T use Createrawtransaction and just make your own and feed it into signrawtransaction?)

All good information and advice.

Just make sure to test it using testnet first since it can be tricky.  ;-)
2985  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help, old wallet rescan is taking forever, CPU at 1% on: August 31, 2014, 03:32:28 PM
Glad it is working faster.  ;-)

2986  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help, old wallet rescan is taking forever, CPU at 1% on: August 31, 2014, 12:36:09 AM
One thing to consider is that it could be a USB issue - could you copy the wallet to a hard disk or better internal flash drive?

If this is a slow USB device or older bus the process could be i/o bound which would be why CPU usage is so low.

It could be other things of course but this is a possibility.
2987  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone please tell me this isn't how transactions always work.... on: August 30, 2014, 04:09:32 PM
Now I'm confused.

You are confused because you are talking about two completely different things as if they are both the same thing.

Thing number 1: Accepting an unconfirmed transaction that is funded by confirmed outputs.

If someone sends you a transaction, and the transactions that the inputs come from are confirmed, then malleability doesn't affect you.  As long as the transaction is well propagated and includes an appropriate fee, it's a pretty small risk to accept it.  For small value payments, most merchants would consider this an acceptable risk (probably a lower merchant risk than shoplifting, chargebacks, and counterfeit bills).

Thing number 2: Spending the output from an unconfirmed transaction.

If you receive an unconfirmed transaction, and then try to spend those bitcoins that you just received before they have confirmed, you then have a problem with malleability.  The transaction ID of the unconfirmed transaction could change before it confirms, which would then make your transaction invalid.  While it is often reasonably safe to accept unconfirmed transactions, it is never very safe to spend those bitcoins until the transaction has confirmed.

Thank you for your response. I am talking about #2.

There is a nice detailed summary here if you want to read more:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=460944.0

As Danny says, #1 and #2 are different beasts. Transaction malleability alone isn't an issue unless you are relying solely on the tx id.  And it only becomes an issue if you combine it with attempting to spend those before they are confirmed.

2988  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Ububtu 14 32 bit, Qt errors out the wazoo! on: August 30, 2014, 03:53:01 PM
I compiled the current version 0.9.2.1 on Ubuntu 14.04, 64 bit last week without issue, just as a datapoint.

Your pastebin is for dimecoin though, so perhaps there are differences there too.

Is ./build_detect_platform  executable?

chmod it to fix that.
2989  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone please tell me this isn't how transactions always work.... on: August 30, 2014, 12:45:27 PM
Anyway you don't even need to wait for a confirm if your buying food or drinks or whatever under $500  if clerk confirmed miner fee paid and transaction appears on his side then it is most likely paid and your good to go.
As discussed earlier, until the malleability issue is resolved accepting unconfirmed transactions is too risky at present.

Unconfirmed transactions are not risky due to the malleability issue unless you are relying solely on the tx id. You can safely use unconfirmed transactions as long as you don't use only the tx id to track them pre-confirm.

2990  Bitcoin / Press / Re: POST FORMAT: YYYY-MM-DD SITE - HEADLINE on: August 29, 2014, 09:35:05 PM
Making this thread sticky didn't achieve the intended result.

Making kiba a moderator (for a while) didn't achieve the intended result.

Maybe an SMF mod that rejects new threads whose title does not match the format?

First it started(? maybe continued) with people ignoring the lack of brackets in the POST FORMAT and making it [POST FORMAT].  Then we got to ignore the "notability" standard.

This week it looks like the "SITE" portion is being completely ignored.  With some even not including the date.

Pretty soon this will just be a clone of the Discussion section.

Either somebody cleaned up or it's not that bad after all. Just have more mods with clear missions. If you have some new dude nobody knows and he promises to delete all threads on the main page that don't honor the rules, you can easily check if he's doing his work correctly and people will respect the rules quickly, too. No need to be picky about nominating a rule-enforcer mod.

I did just look and all the posts date dates included brackets and all but one or two had no site portion, just the headline. :-)

It just seems silly to have rules that are ignored.

2991  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hal Finney passed away Thursday morning on: August 29, 2014, 03:31:41 PM
Still shoked at the cryo stuff, i need to learn more about that. Would you like to be cryogenized?

Check out the alcor.org web site for more info.  ;-)

2993  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and me (Hal Finney) on: August 29, 2014, 02:34:54 AM
If you are curious about cryopreservation, check out alcor.org's web site.

RIP Hal.
2994  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: RIP Hal Finney on: August 29, 2014, 01:34:03 AM
So long, exceptional person.

http://lists.extropy.org/pipermail/extropy-chat/2014-August/082585.html

Hal was a central figure of modern cryptography and will be remembered forever.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Finney_(cypherpunk)

RIP.  That is crazy he went under cryo.  Do you know how much they have to pay up front for that?  Easily $500,000.

He was cryopreserved at Alcor.  Whole-body is around $200k and neuro (just your head) is around $80k.

You pay with insurance (usually) so you don't need to come up with that money in a lump sum.

Go to ALCOR.org to read more about it, and how much it costs. A lot of technically knowledgable people are involved - including Ralph Merlke. (Look up Merlke trees in bitcoin etc)

RIP. We'll see ya in the future

2995  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Checking Remote Node Availability on: August 29, 2014, 12:04:09 AM
D&T beat me to it by mentioning addnode, but you could open the console, do an

addnode xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx add

Then you could look at something like this (assuming you are running *nix  (Unix, Linux, MacOS X):
netstat -an | grep "8333"

to show what IPs you are connected to.  Is the IP you were wondering about there?   (You might use "onetry" in the addnode too.)

You might want to do an
addnode xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx remove

when you are finished testing.

For automation, you might send the addnode automatically, then check the netstat with a shell script and grep, then remove that node.
2996  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Amazon buy Blockchain.info till 2016? on: August 27, 2014, 02:24:33 PM
Would Satoshi agree on selling the Blockchain.info page? Is Blockchain.info directly linked wiith the Bitcoin devs??

Blockchain.info is just someone's web site.
2997  Other / MultiBit / Re: Transactions show in blockchain but not receiving it... on: August 27, 2014, 02:19:15 PM
It will get into the next block, I'm pretty sure.

Onkel Paul

Edit: Just got the first confirmation, so unless someone stages a gigantic double-spending heist right now you're good.

Looks like 9+ confirmations now, so Onkel Paul is right...it all looks good.  ;-)
2998  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-08-25] All the truth about DOGE on: August 27, 2014, 02:17:13 PM
http://www.cryptobang.com/2014/08/25/all-the-truth-about-doge/

The DogeCoin madness started in December, 2013, when the cryptocurrency was released. Everyone thought it will be the next big thing, the new Bitcoin. Unfortunately, it couldn’t live up to the expectations of crypto fans around the world. In spite of people’s enthusiasm, the Portland script-based cryptocurrency was poorly crafted from the very beginning.

"script-based"?  Really? ? ?  Ah, no, it is not "script" based, but "scrypt".
2999  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-08-27] For Bitcoin’s Miners and Spenders, a Supply and Demand Imbalance on: August 27, 2014, 02:14:15 PM
"the amount of mining activity keeps increasing"

Which does not change the amount of coins available, at most it slightly increases the speed at which they become available.  As aigeezer said, the "crisis of the moment" is nothing.  The "degree of difficulty" has been increasing forever, just varying in the amount (with only a few times where it actually dropped slightly).

This is just a WSJ Blog, so pretty meaningless IMO.

You should move any remaining balance to a new address to be safe ASAP.
