301  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Willy was used to Launder Bitcoins, not drive price up. on: May 27, 2014, 06:32:43 PM
The real question for someone to answer is where the laundered coins were coming from in the first place? Which Address/es were sending the coins to the trading bot on MtGox?

302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 1,000,000 bits = 1 bitcoin. Future-proofing Bitcoin for common usage? VOTE on: May 23, 2014, 04:34:55 AM
Getting .00004420BTC is much more complicated than describing it as 4420.00bits.

you mean 44.20 bits
or 4420 satoshi's....

right?
Good point  Grin
303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 1,000,000 bits = 1 bitcoin. Future-proofing Bitcoin for common usage? VOTE on: May 23, 2014, 04:21:47 AM
In all actuality making 1BTC 1,000,000.00bits would make it easy for the general public. All the reasons already mentioned aside, some people cant even deal with more than two decimal places so using BTC as is would be confusing/unappealing to them.

When I tell people about investing in Bitcoin it is hard for them to imagine what value they have when it is spread over 8 decimal places. I tell a friend he can give me 10 dollars worth of USD for some BTC, it would make sense for the number to be whole when I give it to him. Even for a new investor/user of the currency "bits" or "Bits" should not seem confusing to someone who is brand new. Getting .00004420BTC is much more complicated than describing it as 44.20bits.
304  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase question on: March 20, 2014, 04:57:33 PM
Yep, just need a Visa credit card, can buy up to $1k worth of bitcoin instantly

I think you are limited to 100$ a WEEK instant buy your first month.

This is true, the weekly value is reset on daily basis so you can buy a few dollars a day after your 100 per week, its not a weekly reset. After you have made 1 purchase, have a credit card attached in-case the main account does not have funds to cover the cost, and a Coinbase account for over 30 days you can instantly buy 1000 USD worth of BTC per week.

305  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does anybody knows how bitcoin is validated? on: March 19, 2014, 06:15:51 PM
There is no difference between the original file and the copy, both can be considered authentic.

This is true no differences at all between a wallet.dat file and a copy of a wallet.dat file both are usable on any persons computer.

If someone has a copy of your non-encrypted wallet.dat file, they will essentially own any coins that are sent to the addresses associated with the .dat file.  In that case its who ever spends the coins first, I don't think even encrypting the wallet after this point will have any effect to protect the coins because the attacker has copied a non-encrypted wallet.dat file and can sign transactions with the non-encrypted dat file for the same address. (Someone correct me if I am wrong)

Its best to have your wallet.dat files backed up on offline machines and encrypted with a long password.

Cheers,
juju

Hey guys, sorry again for my lack of communication recently, this family get-together has lasted a lot longer than I thought!

Anyway I'm not sure if you've heard but a side-channel attack for ECDSA has been published, to be specific the ECDSA variant used in Bitcoin/Litecoin/TiPS/etccoin.

It allows an attacker to recover the private key for a given address/publickey, but only under certain circumstances. (in non-techie terms, it allows someone to make a wallet key mold from your wallet lock and unlock your wallet with it)

I tried looking around to see if any other coin devs talked about this yet but I haven't found anything (it's hard to search on a phone though, if you've heard anything a link would be appreciated!)

Maybe it's just not a priority to them, seeing as the attack depends on the factors below (might be incorrect, based on what I could understand from the paper and what others have said):
Code:
- Attacker knows target address/publickey
- Attacker can execute code on the same machine as the target (eg. attacker owns a VPS on the same machine as the targets VPS)
- Target has signed 200+ transaction/inputs from the target address

If all of these conditions are met then recovering the targets private key is only a matter of time, and while the probability of all of these being met is pretty slim it still leaves a possibility.

Maybe other coin developers have already marked it down as WONTFIX, but I won't stand by and allow the coin I develop to contain any public exploits.

A mitigation technique (aka: semi-fix) is already described in the paper, although it sounds like it might take some work to implement. I'll start looking into it as soon as I get back but that might not be until March 9th or so.

PS. sorry if this post reads a bit weird, had to rewrite it because my phone randomly skipped back a page and I lost the post before I could send it -.-

I will try to see what I can find for you, I just read the Abstract, Introduction and Mitigation portions of the paper. I will see if I can find anyone else talking about these type of attacks, I think it would certainly be wise to mitigate things like this before they even become an issue.

It sounds as if limiting the number of times a private key can be used for singing transactions would be the most optimal solution. I don't quite fully understand yet the second mitigation tactic however it seems it is not as binary of a solution and just provides a reduction in the effectiveness of the attack.

Thank-You for sharing this information, it is comforting to see the coins developer on the ball.
307  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto's P2P foundation profile makes a reply on: March 07, 2014, 02:17:10 AM
This is awesome if it is indeed Satoshi, which I am inclined to believe.

Since you might be reading this Satoshi, maybe you can sign something in the future. Send a coin to a new wallet and sign a message with it for us this will help quickly qwell fears.

309  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] TiPS ★ Kimotos Gravity Well ★ Coin anonymizer launched! on: February 23, 2014, 05:03:37 PM
do we actually have any devs here on the forum other than Invisible?
we've been discussing fiercely for 2 weeks and got the cryptocoinnews article ready and everybody is ready to go out and spread the word, yet we have to get the green light from devs who we never hear from. this is kinda getting me demotivated and disappointed, and i'm not the only one.

Invisible has been busy recently, but what about the other devs, why don't we hear a word from them? why can't they discuss this stuff with us or give us their opinion and let us start our work finally? if they want to wait with marketing then they should let us know, if they don't give a shit about TiPS getting a wide audience or about a passionate community supporting the coin, then they should also let us know so that we can find another project. we've been the first currency with working mixing service for some time now, but no body knows about it outside this thread. guess why..

It seems like the TiPS team likes to release things in chunks, I bet the next update we get will be a doosy. Ive seen some of the new logos/Graphics etc, I bet the website redesign and Reddit Redesign and wallet update with new logos will make everything really tight and concise.

Stop putting the main focus on the coin mixer. Its easily duplicable and not a selling part.

Cryptocurrencies arent all that useful.... the strongest real use for a cryptocurrency i can possibly think of  is tipping content producers on the internet with tips like a youtube video. instead of "tweet this" its "tip this" at the bottom of the page.

The way content producers make money right now is through ads. This isnt very practical at all. Very few people are able to do it because you need tens of thousands of views to make anything remotely. Also adblock is becoming the norm. It will be impossible to make money from it soon. But with tipping you could have like 30 guys that come to your blog/youtube/tumblr but you provide them a serious stream of content that benefit them in some way. Like exercise techniques for example. So you have these 30 guys coming to your page but you are making a living off it simply cuz theyre rich tip holders who have an easy way to spend money on what they truly value

Theres no easy way to donate to people via paypal... you have to have a working paypal setup a lot of people dont... people from different countries have different currencies its not viable to tip them to an american... kids can now tip people wheras paypal requires you to be 18. You dont need a bank account or credit card. Theres a lot of different problems with donating with paypal. Not to mention there are chargebacks and fees and its just not as easy as just clicking 1 tip button. You  cant send somebody 1/8th of a penny in paypal either.

Thats the only selling point a cryptocurrency could ever have. So to say that you shouldnt focus your marketing on exclusively tipping is nonsense. I think anything that detracts from tipping is damaging...like to say THE FULLY ANONYMOUS COIN and supposedly this is where the market comes from.

Or the acronym "Total Internet Private Security" WAY TO THROW OUT EVERYTHING AND FOCUS ON ONE GIMMICK

I can see it now

actually not a bad ad idea aimed at investors.

This is a good idea, also what icanprogram suggested on reddit: https://www.gittip.com/ something like that website. I also suggest we make it so people can tip Twitch.tv and Justin.tv streamers as well.
(Reddit Thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/FedoraCoin/comments/1ynfkb/you_should_read_this_an_interesting_take_on_the/)

Maybe the people who sign up on the site can donate Currencies via the page and they just redeem them via the page: the bloggers, streamers, etc would be able to interact with this interface.

First thing don't worry your coins are not lost.

I had half a billion in limbo for a week and only got them back yesterday after i filled out a ticket.

Fill out a ticket and have the transaction id ready with the address you were sending it too, amount of coins too.

Don't worry, we have all been there. and i don't have a working block chain link.
Thanks for that encouragement!  but, does that mean that there isn't a working blockchain explorer for this coin?  that ain't good... lol

Also a better looking Block explorer  - http://fedoracha.in/

Alright, we decided to collect 0.3 BTC to get an article on cryptocoinsnews.

- Coin mixing as it is our unique feature as of now
- the tipping aspect of tips
- large number of coins, fair launch, no premine

How well does http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitmessage work to encrypt data? I don't think it uses PGP but I might be mistaken? Bit Message is pretty easy to use from what I have done with it.

I suppose all we can do is wait, juju. Wait and hope for the best. I hope your situation is resolved quickly!

How about posting a TXID or I call bullshit and another lame ass FUD attempt by a newbie.

Post your txid and maybe "magically" your problem might be solved.

~BCX~

I think like myself Rulishix never received a txID, its just a confirmed pending withdraw -

This looks fantastic! Thank-you for all the hardwork!!!  Grin

The ball is now in the communities court, as a community we need to help fill in the gap for the services we need to truly make this the awesome coin it is. (Paper Wallet, Android Wallet, etc.)
320  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptsy Support Is Nonexistent! on: February 17, 2014, 07:51:47 PM
I never had a problem with Cryptsy until this last Friday. I tried to send myself ~10BTC worth of coins and the transactions wont finish pending. I have confirmed the emails several times on multiple days, and even made smaller withdraws with the same coin to the same address from Cryptsy in 4 minutes. Its been several days now and my ticket has been open for over a day no response from anyone. Just a little upset because I have defended them for so long and referred many people and now they are just holding my coins and their is nothing I can do.
