3001  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 7 - Transfer Fees on: July 24, 2011, 05:53:36 PM
Hi, I was just checking out Bitcoins 7 again and I wonder why they have a transfer fee for withdrawing bitcoins of 0.01 BTC.

Seems to high: most of the exchanges offer withdrawal for free. If any the fee should not exceed 0.0005 BTC.

What do you think?

Make competition work.  If you think the fee is too high, don't use them or do not use that feature.  (only sell BTC for dollars there)  There are other exchanges out there that do not charge for this.

Ps - The fee is quite trivial if you are dealing in $100 increments.
3002  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Americans: your country can no longer make it to space on their own. on: July 24, 2011, 02:27:38 PM
The us spent billions of dollars creating a pen that can write in space. The russians used a pencil and paper....

Sounds good as an anti-government reply.  It is not true.  Reading the article, the Russians are using OUR PEN.   From wikipedia below with bolding added by me.

"Uses in the U.S. and Russian space programs

A common urban legend states that, faced with the fact that ball-point pens will not write in zero-gravity, NASA spent a large amount of money to develop a pen that would write in the conditions experienced during spaceflight (the result purportedly being the Fisher Space Pen), while the Soviet Union took the simpler (and cheaper) route of just using pencils.[1] This story is in fact false, as the development of the Fisher Space Pen was done independently of NASA, using private funds, and only sold to NASA (and the Soviet Union) after it was completed.

Russian cosmonauts used pencils, and grease pencils on plastic slates until also adopting a space pen in 1969 with a purchase of 100 units for use on all future missions.[2] NASA programs previously used pencils (for example a 1965 order of mechanical pencils[3]) but because of the substantial dangers that broken-off pencil tips and graphite dust pose in zero gravity to electronics and the flammable nature of the wood present in pencils[3] a better solution was needed. NASA never approached Paul Fisher to develop a pen, nor did Fisher receive any government funding for the pen's development. Fisher invented it independently, and then asked NASA to try it. After the introduction of the AG7 Space Pen, both the American and Soviet (later Russian) space agencies adopted it."

Just to put another nail in the coffin, lets calculate what that fee is at current rates. Round it off to $13.70 send multiply by 0.0005 and you get roughly 7 tenths of a cent. So yes, you can send 1 cents worth of bitcoins, but it will cost you 7 tenths of a cent.

That's ok-ish for now. A 10 cent transaction would have a 7% fee, a 5 cent transaction would be 14%. Those are high, but probably workable (after all, Apple has proven that 30% fees don't kill an ecosystem (yikes)). Problem is, fees are going to get higher as mining bounty drops off, and as there's more and more competition for speedy transactions.

And again, nothing else even comes close to Bitcoin here.  You can send 10 cents with a fee that is less then a penny.  We are talking about a penny here.  This is not going to stop any business model I know of from succeeding.

3004  Economy / Goods / [WTS] iPhone 3GS white jailbroken and unlocked 19 BTC on: July 23, 2011, 07:50:56 PM
Fully functional white iPhone 3GS, with box, charger and usb cable.  This unit is running 4.1 jailbroken with cydia installed (shown in pic) and the ultrasn0w unlock.  The screen is scratch free and the casing is good on the back except a slight crack at the side.  Large picture sizes to show detail.

19 BTC shipped USA/Canada
22 BTC shipped internationally Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa etc.

Words of caution, if you buy this, do not run and upgrade it to the newest IOS.  You will loose both the jailbrake and the unlock and it may be IMPOSSIBLE to jailbrake or unlock it again.

3005  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin mining at 20 cents per kwh on: July 23, 2011, 06:17:52 PM
Those power costs are a joke - try .47 cents kwh out here in Jamaica.

Then everything not so 'IRIE MON'
At that price solar becomes a viable option.
3006  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Americans: your country can no longer make it to space on their own. on: July 23, 2011, 03:10:44 PM
Thanks President Obama! You did us proud!

Only Russia can make it into space right now.  For everyone else who you might consider able to put a man in space, the US has similar capability.  Only Russia can schedule and so it safely nearly on demand.

Nobody in the know would blame this directly on Obama.  He carries some of the fault because he canceled an project that was billions of dollars over budget and years late.   Most of the blame goes straight to NASA and congress for designing a shuttle replacement that was meant to please specific constituents vs doing the best job for less.

Something more like DIRECT would have kept us in space.  This would have had to be done in 2008 or before.

3007  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Micropayments on: July 23, 2011, 04:11:51 AM
Everyone has their own idea of what a micropayment is.  Paypal it is under $12.  To some it is pennies.

I deal with micropayments when selling LEDs and stickers.  A sticker and shipping can be as low as $1.48

Bitcoin beats out Paypal or anything else that I know of currently.  I group transactions and when they get to $100 or so I change them into real money through an exchange and Dwolla.  My fees on $100 total transactions?  75 cents or less.  .75%
25 cents for Dwolla, 50 cents for Tradehill or less using others.

It I had 20 orders with paypal averaging $5 each, paypal would charge $9 on that same amount or 9%.

If I spend the money in the community my fees are nearly zero.  Nothing else that works can do that.

If your idea of a micropayment is 5 cents, nothing out there is gonna work better then bitcoin, even though the fees will be quite high as a percentage.

3009  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Would killing the minimum wage help? on: July 22, 2011, 11:56:40 PM

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm opposed to the minimum wage, but in reality repealing it would have almost zero effect.  There are relatively few minimum wage jobs as it is, as most unskilled jobs pay more.  Most of the unemployed are unemployed because they have a certain skillset, and will chose to remain on unemployment insurance payments so long as they last rather than take a lower wage job.  If we were to repeal both the minimum wage laws and restrict or repeal unemployment insurance, there might be some measurable effects.  But the truth of the matter is that most of the unemployed can find minimum wage work, but won't because they are accustomed to a higher wage and better working conditions than a minimum wage job.

There are lots of min wage jobs in my area.  People can not live on that wage, and with unemployment payments others that would do it, decide not to.  A repeal would make little difference unless you allowed illegals to work on the books for min wage.

On the eastern shore of Maryland there are not enough people to pick crops at $10 an hour.
3010  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 14 good reasons for bidding "bitcoins.com" on: July 21, 2011, 09:55:11 PM
Yesh, no site is worth 50-60k usd, even if it is bitcoins.com o.O

Well apparently if I am reading that site right, inheritance.com and solvent.com are bid up to $350,000 each.

Am I reading it right?

3011  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Democrats & Debt on: July 21, 2011, 03:53:10 PM
Your kidding me right ? Your obviously a staunch democrat supporter with a strong unconscious bias that distorts your perception of reality.

Let me outline it in simple terms. Go back and observe the graphs. Clearly Republican administrations inherit governments with democrat created fiscal time bombs.

No, actually I am not a staunch democrat supporter.  I think the interests of the country are no longer being represented by either party.  Both parties are doing only what keeps them elected now.  They get elected by money that comes from big corporations or by bizarre religious nuts.

Your bias is quite clear, not just from your fonts and language but from your complete inability to look at a simple graph.
Your bias has caused you not to look at your own data (or at least data you provided).  The graph is QUITE CLEAR.

I have a white 3gs 16gb as well, can go to $350 in bitcoins.  I have box, charger and cable with it.

3013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Promotion on: July 21, 2011, 12:46:53 PM
or I want to be paid in bitcoins only.

I am afraid that's illegal, if you accept a payment then it is a must to also accept official currency, but you can triple the price in USD and if required tell officials it's because bitcoin has no transaction fee or something like that, then i think it would be ok.

Where?  In the US you must accept payment in USD for debts owed (like a plumber after the work is done, or a meal in a restaurant after it is eaten) but for an item for sale you do not as it is not a debt.  You can offer to trade your items for bitcoins and bitcoins only just as someone might want to trade a HD 5870 for a power supply and nothing else.

3014  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Nuclear economics: Thorium is Bitcoin - Holy Grail Moment on: July 21, 2011, 12:28:46 AM
Cold Fusion is much more efficient. Check out the device by Rossi and Focardi. There is a plant going online in October in Greece (Defkalion).

Link?

Cold fusion so far has been either fraud or error.  These guys so far look the same as every other cold fusion claim.  Nothing even close to workable cold fusion for a power plant has been demonstrated.  There is no cold fusion 'plant' going online if a plant is defined as something that puts commercial scale energy into the grid.

Thorium... now that is possible and should be pursued like our lives depended on it.

Quote
The Obama administration has asked a federal judge to order the defendant, Ramona Fricosu, to decrypt an encrypted laptop that police found in her bedroom during a raid of her home.

What happened to the The Fifth Amendment of TCOTUS which says that "no person...shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself."

Your title leads people to believe that these changes to the justice department were done under Obama.  Obama has not made things better in this area (which is very disappointing) but he has not made them worse either.  The justice department has been attempting to force decryption/passwords in violation of the 5'th amendment for sometime.
3016  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Democrats & Debt on: July 20, 2011, 01:01:44 PM
The graphs below show that Democrats are incapable of managing the U.S economy.

Are you incapable of reading first the chart you provided?

Democrat Kennedy left the country in better shape then he got it in and left it in a positive trajectory.

Republican Nixon and Ford added more debt.

Democrat Carter was close to neutral though added a minor amount of debt.

Republicans Regan and Bush added a huge amount of debt.

Democrat Clinton did what no other president has done on the modern era:
He brought us out of MASSIVE debt into savings.

Republican Bush DESTROYED the economy and gave us crippling debt.

Democrats are neutral or pay off debt, republicans have added huge amounts of it and left the economy in shambles often.

3017  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Video board HIS-6990 lasted only 3 days of mining... on: July 20, 2011, 01:05:25 AM
I bought a HIS-6990.

http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-604.shtml <- Crap?!

I will try to change it for a XFX instead...

As far as I know all of the 6990 boards are reference now.  Brand almost does not matter.  That will change of course in the future.

There is no such thing as a apathetic tool unless it is used inanely with a handicapped view of reality.

Call it a yard sale and do it entirely on your own property.  Have ice, lemons, water, sugar and cups for sale individually.  If someone buys em all, put them together properly for free.  If the cops get to invasive, let the customer put the items together.
3020  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin is not politically-neutral. on: July 20, 2011, 12:53:24 AM
Bitcoin is a tool. It is politically-neutral since it is incapable of holding political views. People on the other hand are not politically-neutral.
