3001  Economy / Economics / Re: Effective Covid-19 vaccine found on: November 10, 2020, 04:39:08 AM
The RAPS vaccine tracker is still saying that the Phase III trials for the vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech is still ongoing. Therefore I would assume that the full results are not yet out. The formalities such as certification will start only after the full results are analyzed. But if the effectiveness is more than 90%, it is going to be more than enough. Normally antiviral vaccines are considered effective if they have a success rate of more than 70%.
3002  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: US 2020 Elections data, polls and bets on: November 10, 2020, 04:24:52 AM
There are only about 25k ballots that will for sure be counted and then about 40k provisionals which may or may not be counted. It doesn't look like there will be enough for Trump to flip it. He will lose the state by a few thousand votes.

We hear about software glitches every election year. It doesn't occur at a big enough scale to overturn an election.

In 2016 they did a recount in several midwestern states and it only changed the outcome by a few hundred points. They found that software glitches and other issues affect both sides and they end up canceling each other out for the most part.

Trump is trailing by 14,746 votes and as per the latest data 77,000 ballots remain to be counted. The bad news for Trump is that a large section of these ballots are from Pima county, which is very blue leaning (I would assume most of the remaining ballots are from the city of Tucson). It is going to be very tough for Trump to win the state, but it is clear that the early call being made by Fox News was horribly wrong.

But here is the catch: provisional ballots are skewing heavily towards Trump. Among the 2400 or so provisional ballots accepted so far, Trump won 1,658 and Biden got 688. Data: https://results.arizona.vote/#/featured/18/0
3003  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: November 10, 2020, 04:05:53 AM
Well India could be in the same situation like how Australia was when the two teams last played in Australia where Australia were missing Smith and Warner which had a huge impact on the outcome because if them two players were playing then I think the series would of been different. I really do hope that we see two full strength teams for this upcoming test series in Australia as this series could be one of the biggest in the past 10 years.

Back then the Australian batting was quite weak and the Indian pacers did a lot of damage. This time the challenge will be tougher for the Indian bowlers. Also this time, the Australian pacers are in top form, especially Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. Without Virat Kohli, it is not going to get any easy for the Indian batsmen. Can we expect another miracle from Cheteshwar Pujara this time?
3004  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: November 10, 2020, 03:54:27 AM
Here also this could happen. I believe Delhi Capitals wins the league this time.
Even i would like to see Delhi Capitals to win this season as they never won it before while Mumbai won multiple times and the last two tournament wins in 2017 and 2019 by 1 run which says everything about their bowlers, Mitchell Johnson bowled the last over in 2017 where he picked 3 wickets while Malinga bowled the last over in 2019 and picked 2 wickets and this time around if Mumbai wins it depends upon how Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult bowls.

Bumrah is the best bowler in T20 format right now. But the same can't be said about Boult. He has taken a lot of wickets in this edition of the IPL, but he leaked a lot of runs during crucial situations. Boult is one of those bowlers who are more suited to the test format. The biggest vulnerability for MI remains their spin department. If DC can make use of this vulnerability, then they can become the champions for the first time.
3005  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Any idea when the Bitcoin Mempool will stop being so congested? on: November 09, 2020, 06:25:53 AM
According to Earn.com, the median transaction fee has fallen to 330 Sat/Byte, which is lower than what we had a few days back. But depending on the size of your transaction, you may end up paying anywhere from $2 to $10, if you want a quick confirmation. You can try your luck with lower amounts, but don't blame me in case your transaction gets stuck for 2-3 days.
3006  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What to answer when asked "Can I make money mining bitcoin?" on: November 09, 2020, 06:13:00 AM
I have been in this field for more than 8 years. I would say that Bitcoin mining is economical only for large-players. For small and medium sized players, it is more profitable to purchase Bitcoins from the open market and keep invested. Hash power is going up with every passing day and you constantly need to upgrade your hardware. I don't think this is possible unless you are having huge capital.
3007  Economy / Economics / Re: Is COVID-19 an excuse for governments & central banks to print money? on: November 09, 2020, 06:02:33 AM
Printing of money will affect the current economic status of a certain country. It will cause inflation if the country has a lot monetary supply, I believe that if they will continue the production of money, the value of it will be lessen, the supply will be change but the value of each will decrease. So printing more money? Is not an answer, maybe using each country's fund is the answer not printing more of it, or they can ask for help from the United Nations.

LOL.. help from the United Nations? It is not UN's job to give free money to all the countries, so they can distribute it among the residents. If any of the governments want loan, then they should make a formal application to the donor groups. These donor groups can be a consortium of private individuals, or state-run agencies such as the ones from China and Japan.
3008  Economy / Economics / Re: Second lockdown in Europe can their economy survive this?. on: November 09, 2020, 05:46:21 AM
Everyone can always get back to their feet. This pandemic is not forever. People will always find their ways to survive and recover from any crisis. Another test in humanity, where people learn a lot of lessons in life during this lockdown, whether financial or survival strategies. Now, we can appreciate those preppers and how they are fully prepared on this type of crisis.

Obviously the pandemic is not going to last forever. But we need to understand that a lot of people are facing joblessness and poverty as a result of this pandemic. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 lasted for more than two years. If COVID 19 turns out similar to that one, then we will be in a lot of trouble. The economy can't handle another year of downturn. Even the richest countries will face financial issues.
3009  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: November 09, 2020, 05:34:22 AM
Has someone tried to compare the real time price Paypal is offering for BTC with that of an exchange ? It's very possible the trading fee is hidden in the price.

I don't think that they will do that, when they advertise that they are not going to charge any fee for purchasing cryptocurrency. These small amounts don't matter for PayPal, as they have a multi-billion capitalization. They can afford to splurge a few hundred million USD in promotional campaigns, unlike the cryptocurrency exchanges. And that's why I am saying that the entry of PayPal changes the status quo in the cryptocurrency market.
3010  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: November 09, 2020, 05:23:29 AM
I wasn't expecting much from the South African selectors. But this is even worse than my worst fears. Once again they have included sub-standard players just because of their skin color. How many chances are they going to give to Temba Bavuma? And they included Junior Dala. Seriously? This guy was given tons of opportunities in the past and never made use of any of it. These people are completely hopeless.
What players do you think the selectors neglected, they are giving opportunities for some new players, Temba Bavuma is a good Test player but i am yet to see him play an outstanding innings in the shorter format, this is a 24 member squad and not the playing eleven as i doubt he will get a chance in a match especially in T20 format. Which players do you think are missing from the squad, i cannot remember any player that missed out other than Dale Steyn.

LOL.. not may remain now. Most of the white players have shifted to countries such as England and South Africa, and some have even ended up in New Zealand and associate nations such as USA. A few months back, there was an article in EspnCricinfo, which claimed that more than 50 South African players moved to England to play county cricket under Kolpak rule, during the last two decades. Can you believe this number? More than 4 dozen players giving up their dream of playing international cricket and signing contracts to play county cricket. They did that because they will never get a chance to play international cricket for South Africa under the quota system.

The list includes some of the top quality players, such as Morné Morkel, Duanne Olivier, Heino Kuhn, Marchant de Lange, Rilee Rossouw, Kyle Abbott, David Wiese, Simon Harmer and Hardus Viljoen. And yes.. Simon Harmer tops the list..
3011  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: An Indian boy committed suicide after losing money by Betting in IPL on: November 09, 2020, 05:13:15 AM
Money and greed is what makes people gets addicted to gambling. In start they will play like will stop after some loss but then will start to play for recover etc and this is the continuous process in thinking they will win the next game. But it does not happen always and thus will never know when they get addicted to it .

Agreed 100%. Greed always cause downfall. Even among my friend circle, I know a few people who lost everything as a result of gambling addiction. When they win small amounts in the beginning, they will get addicted to it. But then if they are unlucky, they will start losing consecutively and in the end they will be forced to take loans in order to cover their gambling habit.
3012  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-11-06] US authorities seize $1 billion in bitcoins on: November 09, 2020, 05:01:53 AM
Entire story sounds fishy to me. First of all, I don't think that Ross Ulbricht was the sole administrator of Silk Road. In all probability, more people were involved. I would assume that the other administrators have traded their Bitcoins for freedom. I am sure that there is no hacker named Individual X, and this identity was created by the FBI agents.
3013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will you buy BTC from PayPal now that they are letting people do it? on: November 09, 2020, 04:56:38 AM
I will not buy bitcoin on PayPal because
1. I am not a PayPal user
2. if you are an investor not a trader i think it is good to buy it on PayPal
3. I am a trader waiting for a cheap price to buy bitcoin

For traders, purchasing Bitcoins with PayPal is not feasible at this moment, because they are yet to enable the withdrawal option. PayPal may enable all the features only by mid-2021, and even then I don't expect their withdrawal and transaction fee to be any lower than that of the exchanges such as Binance and Huobi. Also, at this point it is not clear whether they will allow the trading of various cryptocurrencies in their platform.
3014  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: American election is nothing to do with BTC on: November 09, 2020, 04:44:24 AM
It may be because of the uncertainty. Biden might have won the elections and it looks as if Democrats will have a comfortable majority at the House. But the senate majority is likely to remain with the Republicans. This can create problems for Biden, once he is sworn in. In case the senate doesn't allow Biden to function properly, then we can have an impasse, which may affect the economy in a negative way.

Is the world economy the same as the crypto economy?
If really this election had/has an impact on the price of bitcoin, can anyone explain why the price seem to have gone back to where it was?

Global economy is not the same as crypto economy, but from what I have seen, there is a strong link between the two. When people have excess cash or savings, they will be more open to investing in risky assets such as cryptocurrency. When that is not the case, they will prefer assets which are less prone to risk, such as bank deposits and treasury bonds.
3015  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: November 08, 2020, 05:16:25 PM
As you said Delhi looks to win this match s they started of their bowling as well with their good momentum from the first innings which helped to take the wickets of Warner in the second over itself and they lost two more wickets in the same over which put SRH under a great pressure situation. So their winning chances are getting slim but anything can happen as long as Kane Williamson and Holder is in the crease.

As long as Kane Williamson is there, they will fancy their chances. Remember that this is a knock-out match and if they lose it then they are out of the tournament. So they will attack the Delhi bowlers, even if they lose half of their wickets. Playing defensively isn't an option here, with the required rate having climbed to more than two runs per ball.
3016  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should I accept Bitcoin for payments on my online store? on: November 08, 2020, 04:25:48 PM
If the OP is planning to invest in Bitcoins, then this is a good idea. He can set up a Bitcoin wallet and receive small amounts of BTC as payment to this wallet. Within a few months, hopefully he will be able to accumulate a good number of coins. But in case he is planning to immediately convert the BTC to fiat currency, then I would say that this is a bad idea. The exchange rates are volatile, and a lot of paperwork needs to be done.
3017  Economy / Economics / Re: Government slowly open the economy, will it make the pandemic worst? on: November 08, 2020, 04:16:26 PM
This situation really be on the horns of a dilemma.  Reopening the economy is a move that everyone wants but it will increase the number of infected cases.  On the other hand, if you want to reduce cases of covid-19 infection, the government must lock down and worsen the country's economic conditions.  Nobody expects both.  However, that is the reality we must accept.  New normal is an issue that must be accepted by the public, ready to survive side by side with the virus to survive hunger.  Like living in the walking dead series.  Silent and uninspected but starving to death or struggling but zombies are ready to pounce.

In countries such as India and Brazil, sero-sample surveys have found that in some of the cities up to 60% of the population is having antibodies to COVID 19. That means that these people are unlikely to get infected again in the near future. So even if the government opens the economy, the spike in the number of new infections is going to be quite limited.
3018  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: November 08, 2020, 04:06:21 PM
Delhi Capitals having the advantage here. Scoring anything above 160 can be very difficult in Abu Dhabi. 180 plus can be almost impossible to achieve. And on top of that, they have two of the best depth bowlers in Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada. In all probability, the final of IPL 2020 will be between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals, unless SRH can perform some miracle.
3019  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A gambler living in England makes a $5M bet on Trump on: November 08, 2020, 01:50:29 PM
I don't understand how this is entertaining at all. Placing a very huge bet for a presidential election is never really fun. It is politics, dirty and full of cheap behind-the-scene moves. It may be fun for a small amount as it is clearly for the sake of betting. But if it involves millions in US dollar, that is certainly not just about enjoying gambling. That is about being stubborn on a single candidate because of strong political ideas and opinions.

Placing a bet on any election is different from getting involved in it. None of us like politics or the politicians. But even I place my bets occasionally on elections. It is as exciting as betting on sports matches. And this time, there is no doubt that the American presidential elections were really close. Trump would have won, if he had a little bit of luck. The winning margins in most of the crucial swing states were below 1%.
3020  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: An Indian boy committed suicide after losing money by Betting in IPL on: November 08, 2020, 01:31:37 PM
As far as I know, he is 19, and even though he is at that legal age, I think he is still young to make those decisions, and the fact that it led here, that he committed suicide means he can't still take responsibility for his decision, that he can't still take the consequences for that decision he made. That is important as a gambler.

Your statement is factually inaccurate. There is no legal age for gambling in India, because gambling itself is illegal there. It doesn't matter whether you are 15 years or 35 years. Apart from one state, gambling is banned across India. None of the online gambling sites are based in India and they are mostly operating from the Caribbean nations or other small territories. So it will be very difficult for the authorities to take any legal action against them.
