3021  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: localbitcoins escrow going beyond their remit? a potential warning on: December 23, 2013, 10:53:22 AM
he said cash deposit not payment by cash. theres a difference. cash deposit = cash into your nominated bank account from a branch

ditto ... seems like the other party followed your instructions.
Surely Cash Deposit is a safe option with little risk ..

Bank transfer is not the same as cash deposit. Bank transfers can be reversed.

Cash deposit is very different from bank transfer. I don't understand what you are implying?
3023  Economy / Economics / Re: about paper wallets on: December 23, 2013, 10:45:34 AM
instead of printing off a paper wallet is it possible to instead write down an address' keypair/ would I be able to restore from just this combination?

The private key is all you need but noting it down by hand is risky. If you make a mistake you will loose money.

I suggest an electrum wallet seed instead. It consists of 12 English words. When you first run electrum you write the seed down and then read it from paper and enter it in the next window. If you wrote it down incorrectly the wallet doesn't get created so this saves you from loosing coins to mistakes.
3024  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: trouble with offline transaction on: December 23, 2013, 10:41:47 AM

That is a horrendous guide. I mean it's horrifyingly complicated.

You want an offline wallet? Use armory like booklover suggested or electrum. Very easy to do.

3025  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If you used Brainwallet.org - MUST READ! - Security Breach! on: December 23, 2013, 10:34:56 AM
Does anyone know who runs that site or how to contact them? The site itself has no contact info on it, the source code is owned by a user just called "brainwallet", the only thing resembling a contact address is a twitter account also called "brainwallet", etc.

You would think the Bitcoin "brain trust" would communicate with each other better:

I actually have IRC logs about the creation of the phrase brainwallet and brainwallet.org.  It was created by someone who introduction to the subject matter was his own efforts to crack peoples insecure keys, and he was irritated that he only found a few coins. No kidding.
3026  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to send regular amounts to cold storage with differing addresses? on: December 23, 2013, 10:28:08 AM
Yes you can install an offline wallet on a dedicated offline computer. That will give you unlimited addresses. The final part of the puzzle is coin control in your online wallet so that you can send from specific addresses.

Electrum offline + online watch-only wallet will cover all the bases. It has coin control too.

Well He is 100 % right but that only applies to Bitcoin because of it's difficulty. He is also right about the point that there is no free money in mining. You must invest in hardware or directly purchase some Bitcoins or alts only then you can think of earning some money.

Altcoin mining is the best bet at this moment but it won't take too long for Asic developers to change the game here as well. With in a year I can see those coming.

So this is the best time to get invested.

I see phenix coin failed. Which coin are you mining now?
3028  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Client offline on: December 23, 2013, 06:36:15 AM
So I have set up a wallet on my offline computer. I have the master public key on my online computer in a txt file via usb. I already have my default online wallet with coins in it. How can I create my watch-only wallet on the online computer from the master public key? Because the GUI seems to be not making sense as I said. Thanks much!

It's very simple. You were almost there but try it again:

- Run electrum
- Choose File -> Create/Restore
- In the file selection dialog box enter a new file name say xyz.watchonly and click on save
- Select restore wallet from master public key
- Enter the MPK and follow the rest of the steps.

When you want to open the watch only wallet use the file > open menu or create a shortcut with this target:

electrum -w c:\path\to\xyz.watchonly

That is why i used the word probably. Tongue But i am sure that I am the only Pakistani miner who is active in forums as well since April 2013. Tongue

Don't mind just playing. Grin

Ok man Smiley

Have you noticed every new guy who shows up wants to know about mining? One experienced member made a thread telling newbies not to mine:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=380009.0

Mining BTC at least has now gone industrial scale:

No wonder BTC difficulty went up 30% again.

First you should become verified or else you'll get a nasty surprise later on when you try to withdraw money.
3031  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What are change addresses on blockchain? on: December 22, 2013, 06:06:27 PM
You should send change to an address you own i.e. another address in your wallet. See here for more about change:

The admins could make a ton of money if they allowed noobs to get out of jail for a small fee.
3033  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Client offline on: December 22, 2013, 06:03:09 PM
Sure I'll help you. Can you please explain what you are trying to achieve and I'll tell you how to go about it. I mean why do you want to create a watch only wallet?
3034  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I ain't never been no newbie on: December 22, 2013, 06:01:38 PM
So why all these restrictions on new users? New user is not the same as newbie. You made another spam subforum that uses resources and database. Very smart approach.

Most new users are newbies. We don't want them asking stupid questions in other forums. Don't worry we were all newbies once. Just click around the forums while doing something more productive. Also see the stickies. The readme is worth reading especially the bit about email notifications.

I am probably the first miner from Pakistan.

I know another guy who's been mining BTC since at least 2012. Then there is a guy who's into LTC mining from back when CPU mining was still viable. This forum does not represent the situation of Pakistan as a whole.

What alt-coins are you mining faysal?
3038  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Blockchain Wallet API: Generating New Address and Second Password on: December 22, 2013, 07:56:09 AM
Hi,

I do not know if here is the right forum, but i submitted here anyway...

I'm developing a web application integrated with Blockchain wallet API. The application needs to generate new address automatically for each order. Your wallet api offers creating new addresses (which is great) but the problem is it requires second password to proceed. It means developers need to write the second password in their script which i think it is not a very wise decision. Second password should only be needed for transactional (sending btc out of wallet) and account management actions (changing email/password). Generating new addresses is sure not one of them. Hackers can do no harm by generating new addresses. The most important is the wallet balance safe when the main password is compromised. By forcing applications to send second password for generating new address, is increasing chance for hackers to find the second password and gain full control of the wallet.

Please consider to remove second password for generating new address. Most ecommerce applications need to generate addresses automatically without risking their second password will be stolen by hacker when their server are compromised. Second password should be held by wallet's owner safely and only be needed when making outgoing transfers.

Thanks.

If you are worried about security look into generating addresses using Electrum MPK. Your private keys will never touch the web server and it'll be much more secure than relying on a third party. There are a few implementations that you can refer to:

3040  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: noob newbiee question offline wallet procedures on: December 21, 2013, 04:57:24 PM
hi Abdussamad!

If I see balance, etc..... at online wallet, So I have to backup the appdata of online electrum?

I ask this because if i try to restore my seed just from offline wallet there is no funds, no money, any tip about it?

thanks in advance n' best regards!

No you don't have to backup the online wallet. The seed is all you need to restore your wallet. But to see the transactions and balance you need to be online and that is what the watch only wallet is for.

When you say you restore from seed are you doing that on the online system or the offline system? If you are doing it on the offline system you won't see the balance or transactions. But you will see the same addresses as before. Are the addresses the same?

IMO you might want to shelve this plan of using offline wallets for now. It is not something that newbies should be doing. Use online electrum for now and when you become familiar with it you can go for an offline setup. Otherwise the risk is that you make a mistake and loose your coins.
