3141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Cash and free coins on: September 13, 2021, 10:07:33 PM
Most of these coins that are born as forks of bitcoin are immediately distributed the moment the chain starts the software change and usually you will get the same amount that you had in the original coin. If you had 10 bitcoin you would get 10 BCH and they will be exactly at the same address of your original bitcoin and you can use the same key to move them and transact in the forked chain. It is just a question of using whatever tool you want to use to broadcast your transaction to the forked nodes.
3142  Other / Archival / Re: [ETH tokens] Same Blockchain, Different Price on: September 13, 2021, 10:03:53 PM
I do not know if I am getting you right. You are saying that if X coin is successful in terms of price, so should be some other? That does not make much sense really, of course different tokens are intended for different things and have different objectives, communities, funding, uses... No two tokens are exactly alike and that should be more than enough reason for price disparities. For me is so obvious that I am not even sure I am answering your question?
3143  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is it wrong to be a long term holder on: September 13, 2021, 10:00:26 PM
On most projects the problem is not even to be a short or a long term holder. The problem is clearly that you should not even be an investor in 95& of the currencies. Now, if you have found a good project there are different ways of going about it: You can just go in because you believe that they are building something worth and you do not care as much about your gains, so you hodl long term. You can try to make a quick buck on a possible initial pump, then you go super-short. Lastly, you believe in the team and you are willing to let the project mature, then you are looking at a couple of years. What is usually wrong is to be in the middle of these last two because that´s when project are usually at their lowest.
3144  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Greatest Gambling Losers on: September 12, 2021, 10:48:55 PM
Great compilation really. However I am sure that there has been even biggest losses or loosing strikes that have gone unnoticed. Particularly, I am thinking of the Arab Princes and Indian millionaires playing private games at private rooms where nothing that happens inside ever reaches the outside world. You would not even believe the amount of money these guys spend in a day. There is nothing that they cannot buy right there and right now, so I can only imagine what they might do if they get "hot".
3145  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2020/21 on: September 12, 2021, 10:40:59 PM
Hat-trick from Benzema and a combat victory from Real Madrid, it's a pity that I didn't watch this match, apparently it was one of the most interesting in this round. By the way, I thought that even though Benzema does not score goals at such a pace as Ronaldo, if he plays for Real until the end of his career, he will be able to surpass Ronaldo's incredible record. This will be an incredible result considering that Ronaldo himself broke the record that had been held for decades. Smiley

Sometimes a great player that is the centre of attention and gets most of the opportunities to score, such as Ronaldo, may hid the virtues and abilities of other great players and they may actually be re-discovered when the big shot leaves the team. I do recall an example in basket, old times, where Michael Jordan in the Chicago Bulls was getting of the opportunities and was considered the star and was clearly shadowing scotty Pipen. I guess the same happened in RM.
3146  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Slot vs Video Poker on: September 12, 2021, 10:23:03 PM
It is a curious question. I would argue that there is zero skill in slot games, as they are intended to give back a percent of the revenue so even a skilled player will just get that share in the long term. Perhaps there is some skill involved in guessing when the bag is full. However, poker is a highly skilled game of statistics and probabilities and it takes a life to master even for the pros. Poker on line is not that different in that sense, so my answer would be poker.
3147  Other / Off-topic / Re: Corruption and Sports on: September 12, 2021, 10:19:20 PM
With due respect, political manifestos usually have many promises, lots of wishful thinking and plenty of stuff that politicians hope that people forget when it comes to putting it in practice. Still, it is interesting that there is an specific point on corruption in sports and I would not be inclined to think that they are pointing to betting, but rather to a more general objective of reducing money laundering and bad practice in general. Governments rarely care about honesty in betting other than basic regulations.
3148  Economy / Economics / Re: The economy of Bitcoin on: September 12, 2021, 09:38:28 AM
What is the reason for the decline in the price of cryptocurrency Bitcoin? It is unimaginable that it will suddenly decrease by 2.6 billion. If this is reduced, the price of Bitcoin can go below 30 thousand?

I have not seen anything that has not happened before in the bitcoin world in terms of price and volatility. El Salvador has not enough weight to move the price significantly IMHO, so any volatility may come from sales and purchases from funds, companies or individuals as usual. To effectively have an influence in bitcoin price you would need to be thinking of countries in the top 20 at minimum and even some of those may only have a limited influence if the use is not as fully legal tender.
3149  Economy / Economics / Re: How would Bitconia look like? on: September 12, 2021, 09:26:06 AM
Why would it need a country? Bitcoin was designed to operate without leaders, without centralized organizations to govern or support it. If you will make Bitcoin reliant on a country, you would only weaken it, because the country could be sanctioned or invaded.

Bitcoin only needs one thing - more users. And to get more users it should become less volatile and make some technical improvements.

While your argument is true, as things are now, bitcoin users are highly dependent on regulations. You can declare yourself to be "decentralised", but you would still need to abide by the regulations of the place you live in. Having a place where like-minded people share your values may help that vision become true.

The idea is to make sure that those regulations are aligned with your values and ideas. I can tell that many people on this forum are unhappy about the treatment that bitcoin has in term of taxes and restriction. Those that have a significant amount may be interested in living in a crypto friendly jurisdiction and that is simply not possible in many countries. These people could potentially benefit from creating their own jurisdiction, based on the principles of self-sovereignty, crypto friendliness,...

I don't know if it's going to be a good idea, plus you'll probably have to deal with economics, politics, natural resources, and other stuff that a country must have. Also, it's not really a good thing because bitcoin is supposed to be decentralized and having it's own country will defeat the purpose of decentralization.

To be honest, the first thing you would need to deal with is diplomacy, internal law and order and defence. However, as I said, this would be initially intended for individuals who are willing to create a state that would better serve their views.
3150  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Prayer and gambling. on: September 11, 2021, 10:19:55 PM
Interestingly, whether you believe on a superior force, being, god or gods or you believe that we are just dust in the universe, the answer is pretty much the same. Praying to ask a favour from the gods does not really make sense. They are supposed to be omnipotent and omniscient in most religions, and if you believe in some short of universe Karma, it is probably far too busy to notice whatever little egotistic interest you have in mind when you pray from a favour. It is senseless to ask something from a god.
3151  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Dice 101 on: September 11, 2021, 10:08:24 PM
One of the important things about anything you do in life is to remember Covey´s advice "always begin with the end in mind". On this case, you are trying to learn how to play a game which basically is a game of chances. And you are trying to actually improve your chances of winning when in any case, you will always have the loosing side no matter what you do. In other words, you are set for failure no matter how much you learn. Make sure you really know where you want to go before starting the trail.
3152  Economy / Economics / How would Bitconia look like? on: September 11, 2021, 10:03:56 PM
Some people may thing that there are countries that would do better to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, just like in El Salvador, and in many others bitcoin is widely used for fear of the economic and authoritarian policies of the governing juntas.

However, I am inclined to think that bitcoin needs a country. The value of bitcoin, the community and the influence that exerts could potentially make that possible when bitcoin reaches an even higher valuation (perhaps it would be possible even now). How would Bitconia look like? How would we get there?
3153  Economy / Economics / Re: Amazon's future plans on: September 11, 2021, 09:58:13 PM
Amazon´s strategy is pretty much a long term view on almost anything. They do not mind spending money to create the conditions of success in 5 years. They act quite differently from other companies, for example Facebook launches many new ideas and does it for short time spans and for just a test public. They find out what works by testing the public and sometimes they make mistakes. Of Amazon, I can say that they rarely make a mistake and they seem to have a better initial information on their initiatives.
3154  Economy / Economics / Re: Ways to avoid being scammed!!! on: September 09, 2021, 09:09:34 PM
I think you are referring to a particular set of scammers that would do social hacking rather than pure old hacker work and mostly related to identity theft. You can potentially get scammed in so many ways and credit card fraud is so frequent that there is not a single guide that can help you avoid it. Even commercial software sometimes comes with trojans - remember the SolarWinds hack - and even the apparently safest companies may have penetrations from time to time.

There is just common sense left.
3155  Economy / Economics / Re: China cracking down innovation on: September 08, 2021, 09:47:48 AM
Could this be dampening or even killing the expected growth of the Chinese economy? Are they, after all, still communist enough?

What many in the Western world often do not know is that there used to be many political currents in the Chinese Communist Party (10-20 years back). One of the stronger currents was the rather "economic liberal" one, as far as one can say that about communists. The current was instrumental in China adopting many elements of capitalism in the late 1990s, which contributed to this enormous prospering development of the Chinese economy. But, in recent years, and especially with the election of Xi Jinping, another current has taken power, namely the old communist one, to which Jinping also belongs. Therefore, he has also had himself appointed as chairman for life, which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, and it can be seen that this current is taking back more and more elements of the capitalist elements adopted in the late 1990s. How far these will go is difficult to say, but one sees now clearly what was already years in planning.

Thank you, I can see that you at least can have a honest discussion about China´s governance. It is mostly the same in democratic countries in the sense that parties have groups inside that have quite different views, for example the Republican Party in US has the "Tea Party" and recently has become pretty much taken over by Trump´s MAGA.

You hit the point I am taking opinions on: Does this "old communist" school of thought understand that growth is much more difficult without personal initiatives? I get that they want to suppress any influence other than the party and its leader, but that is going to come at the cost of keep millions in poverty and preventing foreign investment at large.

That lack of growth may actually be de-stabilising force. People are happy abut cheering a party when there is prosperity, no so much when things start to crumble.

3158  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NFTs with intrinsic value, is it possible on: September 07, 2021, 09:50:58 AM

...

One thing we have not yet seen are NFTs with attempts at intrinsic value (aside from the typical exclusiveness found in collectibles and art pieces).

NFTs backed by gold or commodities like oil. NFTs backed by intrinsic data or information in an attempt to increase their value.

We have seen stablecoins like tether back their token with USD reserves in an effort to back their digital asset with intrinsic value.

Could we perhaps someday see NFTs follow similar practices?

The fractional ownership of artworks already exists, you can buy parts of a Picasso that effectively, as you describe, stays in a vault. Using an NTF is a viable option for both fractional and full ownership. Aside from collectibles you have the in-game items that do have a market, they can represent any right of use or ownership that is unique. Potentially, they could represent the ownership of a car or a building or a patent with the proper legal framework.

The concept of an NTF is non-fungibility (no two of them are the same, they are not interchangeable like USD or grams of gold) and that is pretty much the opposite to what you´d expect from a fractional ownership, but it can work for full ownership.

3159  Economy / Economics / Re: @Deloitte: "The fiat currency will be gone in 5 to 10 years". on: September 07, 2021, 08:50:09 AM
Yeah, the usual smoke selling from the big 4 that has happened with so many technologies. Once something falls into their hands they will pump the smoke until people think that this technology is pretty much a snake -oil for all the problems in the world and is going to be the next revolution in humanity. They will pump the peak of inflated expectations until they have extracted all the money they can from their clients and then move onto the next thing.

Believe or not, this is NOT good news ... perhaps is not news at all.
3160  Economy / Economics / Re: Have you notice how corporations took over the internet ? on: September 07, 2021, 08:41:50 AM
Internet changed drastically several times. From being simply a military network DARPA net, to becoming a net for the science hubs in USA, then the world, then becoming something more personal as you are describing, with scattered and minimal information, many times amateur contents and quite difficult to search. The the 2000´s bubble generated a few jewels and lots of crap but eventually the innevitable commercialisation begun.

And lately, I think that Google has become so dominant that is shaping the internet, and it is shaping is in a quite shitty way. 200 word articles designed for their SEO algorithm repeating g catch words, lots of paid status quo and an absolute lack of variety in points of view and intelligent discussion.

This is the type of shit that Google is creating all over:
