but if new coin paid halves, then in effect there will be like doubled difficulty

For each individual miner--yeah.  For the whole network--no.  Only ~half as many coins will be added to Bitcoin every year, ~5% inflation vs ~10%.
(yes, oda, I know, just simpler to explain like this).

I met some Chinese the other day. Fairly young, technically minded. At the end of the meeting, i asked:

- Have you heard about bitcoin?

- Yes it's forbidden.

- Well China is the biggest bitcoin country, with the largest exchanges...

- There are some black markets, but it's forbidden.

- ... and the largest mining operations.

- It's forbidden.

- That's just CBOC trying to talk it down...

- No it's forbidden.

Technically it's not, but for all intents and purposes... Undecided

...This is really where having skin in the game will pay off immensely after having weathered the storms.

How's that camwhore studio investment of yours working out thus far?  What was it, Klyemax Studios or some such?  All the bitches tied to the same hitchin' post & calling you daddy yet?

@goldsun:  Bitcoin is a purely speculative commodity, think of it as poker chips.  Adoption rate gives Bitcoin a plausible backstory for speculators to exploit, but little more than that.

If the purchase is made off-exchange, how exactly would this auction directly affect the market?  It's not like the buyer is going to turn around immediately and dump the coins he just bought.

Why not?

So you're suggesting that the coins will auction for less than market value, taking slippage into account?

Slippage works both ways, buying and selling.  To avoid arguing the obvious, let's just say I'm in the majority.

you do realize that buying 50K bitcoin on stamps could (in theory and under very specific conditions) puch price well over infinity

If you do it really wrong, yeah.  You can also accidentally send the coin you bought to the wrong addy.
Are we trying to come up with "how can I lose money like an idiot" scenarios?

27 bid says you're wrong   Grin
10 blocks with 2000btc + 10 blocks with 3000btc... you do the math. Winning bids were probably 10% above the market price.
...

Twenty-seven bids don't have to translate to 20 sold blocks.  All the bids could have been ridiculously low--costs nothing to bid Smiley

You have mentioned "disruptive technology."  I took the time to explain to you that if anything, the Bitcoin protocol may be described as a "disruptive technology," but not bitcoins themselves.

Since Bitcoiners enjoy comparing Bitcoin to the internet, by "investing" in bitcoin(the unit) you have invested in a block of IPv4 addys, nothing more.  So nao U kno.

Why not invest in something you do understand, like the revolutionary, game-changing, paradigm-shifting BTCeanie BTCabies?

When will you realize how retarded it is to compare beanie babies Bitcoin with actual disruptive technology, the revolutionary, game-changing, paradigm-shifting BTCeanie BTCabies? you can repeat it all day and it will not become true.

FTFY

The particular blockchain (Bitcoin) you have "invested" in is not the technology.  It is one of the infinite possible blockchains (CloneCoins).
