Happy Preemptive New Years WOers !

A small competition to celebrate the ending of 2019 (and the bear season with it) and a welcome to 2020.

As always, name this landmark.  It is a major global landmark.  Usual rules apply: 10 merits to first person to name location.  V8 is only allowed two guesses per day. More pixels added at random intervals.  The full picture is identifiable as the landmark.

Shibuya, Tokyo?

Ha!  HairyMaclairy is trying to maximize his number of 2020 New Years celebrations?

Holy shit, this was just perfect!
I've never seen it before either.

It was a very lucky find but I can't for the life of me understand why I was searching, if I'll  ever reuse it or how much good it really is! Life of a Mayfly Heuristic... life of a Mayfly.

Well, we saw $7524.5 on Bitstamp today; time for a new poll.

While I was self-reflecting last night I watched Mad Max (the original) and I realized that I suck at self-reflection.  I found myself trying to get decent screen cap of the interceptor for LastoftheV8s to use as an avatar.

Along the lines of walls of text and over-investing...

I have attempted to find Bitcoin addresses containing 10 letter words (after the initial 1) without regard for case (which makes it much easier) using a list of 22,399 words and the full processing capacity of my computer for 24 hours.  You'll be happy(er) to know, JJG, that I was able to find only one match from that entire list of words:

Pub Addr: 1ExeRcYCLeSxaZkCh7togWcSgcofRYVDLZ
Priv (WIF): L4o3NZYoSf6GVmLaxcaqtmunqiNBs77PNyANmpYtcL6r6dMtcCXb
Priv (HEX): 0xE202278FF792CE920126E8D3A2EE1483AB9FA00807B10B71EAACDAD1DD4D36E4

and I believe that was mostly due to good luck.

If I were to try for an exact case-sensitive match of 1ExercycLes (capital L because Bitcoin addresses can't use miniscule L capital I or Capital O) with random characters after it, I would need 2.4 years for a 50% chance of success.   your funds are SAFU.

On a sad note, I will likely never find a 1JayJuanGee or a 1micgoossens address and a 1LastoftheV8s is just a pipe dream as I am dangerously close to the limit of my wife's generosity for tolerating computer upgrades for this decade.  (fortunately we start a new one soon!)

I hate to disappoint Mr. MicG so this is for his reading pleasure:

I get those all day long with my current hardware.  Tongue

hahahahahaha

I am ssssssoooooooooo glad that you are able to find a hobby that keeps you formulating mathmatical computer problems in your spare time when you are not making hats and keeping your dad in touch with modern computing....  Wink

By the way, I understand that I can be a continuous bubble deflater, but what good do any of these vanity addresses do, anyhow?

Aren't best practices to largely limit use of any one address, and perhaps even one use per address.  Of course, there might be some occasions in which exceptions might be applicable.. for an institution that wants to keep books open or something like that, but private individuals?  Are we reusing bitcoin addresses?   Do you just plan to use some of these generated addresses one time, Xhomerx10?  Then how much good are they?  like a mayfly.. live with fame for only a very short period of time?

Dammit JJG!  Now you've made me access the deepest and darkest regions of my mind trying to make sense of my life.  Why do I do anything?  What good is any of it?  In the grand scheme of things, is the Mayfly's life really any shorter than my own?  I can justify the existence of the lowly Mayfly much more easily than I can explain my search for and use, misuse or non-use of Bitcoin vanity addresses.

How much good are they?

Any way, Christmas is over, let’s get back to doing what we do best......

Observing walls, checking the price too many times a day & dreaming of the MOON!

  I wish!

Bought dad a 1TB SSD for Christmas to speed up his computer a bit ...

<snip>

Been there too, swapped parents spinning rust against SSDs, now they often think they forgot to shutdown because it boots so quick to login screen (Linux, as I have several medical certificates allowing me to stay clear of any MS products).

The best way to accelerate Windows is at escape velocity.

I need to know where to get those medical certificates.

edit: I shouldn't complain so much  at least I'm off work Smiley

Get him some sort of online backup plan. Or stick in even a slower HDD as mirrored backup thingy. (or set up a NAS in your place so he can use something like crashplan? not sure what's online these days. basically you're the cloud provider or something.)

Thanks Dabs but my plan was to speed up his computer.  I was sick of the time it was taking to do anything when he asked me to "fix" something on it.  Cloud would really slow it down wouldn't it?  Internet speed is only 25mb/s here.

Damn I was reading and waiting for the climax......

It worked!!  All I have to do now is reconnect the DVD and I have a whole day off to waste! Sad
Anyone need a computer upgrade?  I'm available.

Any way, Christmas is over, let’s get back to doing what we do best......

Observing walls, checking the price too many times a day & dreaming of the MOON!

  I wish!

Bought dad a 1TB SSD for Christmas to speed up his computer a bit and I made the mistake of using an external rig USB3.0/eSata to mirror the old HDD and using Acronis True Image software.  At first, the computer wouldn't recognize the new drive (#$*% Windows).  I had to go into Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management and enable the drive.  I thought his computer had USB3.0 but as it turns out his computer only had USB2.0 and I didn't bring an extra SATA connector so it took 2 hours for the first 2 hours (yeah, shitty timing algo) and then it really started counting down from 2 hours (although not accurately but I had assumed ~20MB/s so I was prepared to wait)... watched a hockey game, daughter and I went out for a bite to eat - my wife went to see Frozen II with mom... I searched around for some Boxing day deals (there were none) and finally we got down to less than 10 minutes to go! Yay!!  Dad yells in from the other room "Uh oh!  It says "Error reading from sector x".  I looked at it and almost cried but I clicked ignore... another one... ignore another and another etc.  I decide to click "ignore all" - the time remaining goes back to 8 hours.  Angry
Took the computer apart, cut some cable ties to free up a power connector and disconnected the DVD (luckily it was SATA), hooked up the new drive, reconfigured the BIOS, rebooted and ran the software again.  This time the countdown timer started at 30 minutes.  Ten minutes later it went to 38 minutes... I went home.  Dad called about an hour later (it was I nearly 10pm) and said "Another error".   "Click on ignore all", I said.  So I just called him now - he says it's all done; hopefully I will finish up soon.  I'm not too optimistic though.  I seem to have given the gift that keeps on giving (me grief!)

 Merry Christmas!

Hey all, any of you guys know what Bruno’s alt is now? He changes accounts like most people change socks. I need to sent him a pm and can’t seem to find an alt more current than April 2019.

Not 100% on this but you can try Phinnaeus Gage
