I would do about $5400 in mining rigs and $4600 in bitcoins.
I would 3x build dual 6990 machines for a total of about 4.8 GH.
The 6990's may not be the best m/h per dollar but their resale value will be ok even in a year.

It is possible that someone could build a custom card out of EXISTING chips such as a card that had a bunch of efficient laptop GPU's in a desktop card package. The part that would make it a 'bitcoin' specialty item would be a selection of chip that does integer work faster with the lower power usage combo.
A much easier build (but still probably not happening soon) would be a near stock board but with a custom bios with memory clocks lowered and less ram for less power usage. It also might have a mod where it pulls almost no power out of the slot and even a PCIE x1 slot connector.

Good thing I live in Scandinavia Still plenty of somewhat low-cost 5850's and 5770's at stores. Bought 3x 5770 and 1x 5850 without much trouble recently. I don't doubt cards are out there. But they are getting harder and harder to get. At first it was just newegg that was out. Now, newegg, amazon, tiger and lower level places are running out of cards. The remaining cards are higher priced and lower quantities available. People have even resorted to going OUTSIDE and physically going to stores to get cards!

It has happened. We have had exponential growth in mining for sometime as the price of BTC has gone up. As mining is profitable, people add more capacity. But at the size the network is now, adding capacity is actually getting harder. Good cheap 5970, 5870 and 5850 cards are nearly gone. Yes, some of you folks are finding them but you can no longer go on newegg and buy 5 cards. They are not there.
This is not to say that difficulty will not rise, it will. But it is really hard for it to double in one period now, EVEN IF PRICE DOUBLES. I do not know how long this will last, maybe ATI will make more older 58XX chips or the price of the 6990 will drop and there will be a bigger supply. These things are not happening as fast as the price of BTC is rising.
If you have rigs running, you are now in a sweet spot.

There is a small array of individuals that represent the whole of Anonymous, that control and guide these public campaigns, that organize and provide the tools for attacks and take-downs. Usually some of the identities repeat between episodes. They hide behind a wall of "neo-homosexuals" that pretend to be Anonymous while blabbing bullshit on 4chan.
Neo-homosexuals?

These arguments remind me of people that complain about how much money sports stars make. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy sports tickets and merchandise and that is what is paying those athletes salaries. Likewise, no one is forcing you or anyone else to use bitcoins. Ultimately, it comes down to competition. If you think the early adopters might become too rich, start a new currency that works how you want it to work and convince people of its merits and that they should start using it. You'll need to do a lot of work to convince people that it's better than anything else out there and that they should put their money into it, but such is the nature of free market competition.
At the end of the day, if bitcoin is successful, then no matter how rich the early adopters become, the value that everyone else has derived from bitcoin will have been greater. Only if people were forced through the threat of violence to use bitcoins could that not be the case.

Trust. (which has in some cases been earned many times over)
I can say that slush has worked through some real world challenges over a long period of time.
I voluntarily pay btcmine.com the same 2 percent as slush has in his pool. I feel 2 percent is fair.

Confiscate? Do you understand the definitions of the words you are using?
Um, yeah, it means what you thought was yours, just became mine. Of course you know Ben Bernanke will never just break into your kitchen and make himself a sandwich on your dime. The confiscation would be clear. But instead he prints money, and you sit and wonder why prices just went up. He confiscates half your sandwich next year by making it cost twice as much and then buying the other half on the free market and hopes you don't notice the difference. I am the guy who made the YouTube videos who proudly declared that I bought $20k of BTC at 0.80 and now as a result, I am "entitled" to take $200k from other people as a result. Where did the $180k come from? Thin air? No, it came from the backs of others. While I think it's sweet that I can go buy a god damn Ferrari in exchange for absolutely no work, don't you see anything wrong with that? The root of an economy is goods and services, not money, but as a result of this disparity, I have been enabled to take something from an economy without putting anything back. That is the root of the problem others will seek to solve. He can not 'take' it from anyone as you say. They have to freely accept his bitcoin or not. It is their choice. What you are trying to do is take away the guy who has the $200k's money.

That is a good number for micro-transactions for now. That works out to be less then half a penny. Compared to alternative financial systems that is an amazingly low number. Remember, you could send .02 BTC for free which is about 16 cents.

But if it is just str8 fork with the only difference being a new set of early adopters, than I am very sceptical. As a str8 fork I would prefer inflatacoin created. At least we will be able to send all the inflation lovers there The design I have in mind would facilitate creation of chains with different policies. Of course, there is some advantage to reusability of infrastructure if the policies are similar. You would really need to add a feature that was very attractive to everyone that could not be easly done to BitCoin for it to do anything. BitCoin has the 'first mover' advantage in the decentralized currency space. You really need to have something more then a minor feature to unseat BitCoin. Just look in the online auction space, lots of others have great systems better then Ebay. Ebay has the traffic and therefore the users and nobody else comes close.

That my hashing power is nothing compared to most everyone's.
Currently getting 33.4 MH/s off my HD 4670, and it's the best graphics card in my house.
It seems I'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel for awhile.
I started a similar card. Even with difficulty low in Feb I found nothing (solo) until I went to my first 5830.
