3181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ledger hardware wallet owners: heads up on: May 25, 2020, 03:03:38 AM
Good on Trezor for scrubbing their user info regularly, hope to see other companies do the same.
I don't know why they scrub their old customer database they might want to continue with their upselling or something related to that? I mean it's ideal for us as consumers to have our data be trashed but for companies to have that information because customers ordered previously is a gem. Customers are the lifeline of the company so why scrub? Hmm.
I mean, I don't trust any companies who would keep and sell my data, especially if it's any sensitive data and/or they are supposed to aid to keep my privacy.

It is definitely not necessary for companies to keep my home address or phone number. If they tries to sell those data to third party companies, I would have second thoughts about buying from them.

Ah ok I didn't realize that about Electrum.  I will have to research that further.

Unfortunately my log file is nearly 10 M  and apparently the limits are 512 kilobytes for that site.  Do you have any other suggestions on how to share it?  Thanks
You don't have to share the full logs. Just the lines for the previous few days (from when you're experiencing the problems) will do.
3183  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Node Block Propagation Delays / Connectivity Issues on: May 25, 2020, 02:38:53 AM
As far as Electrum goes though, don't you have to use some kind of electrum personal server (i.e. not your own node? ) I guess I just don't understand why you wouldn't be able to use your own personal node.  I mean that's the point is how I thought it was supposed to be.
Electrum has a few advanced features that Bitcoin Core doesn't support. You can run a personal Electrum server which take information from your Bitcoin Core node.

-snip-
Could you paste a copy of your debug.log, it would really be a huge help in terms of identifying the exact issue. Just use pastebin.com and send the link here.
3184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ledger hardware wallet owners: heads up on: May 25, 2020, 02:29:26 AM
Doubt it is real, to be honest. It would fetch much more value if its sold elsewhere in the darkweb presumably. It's fairly useful for hackers to obtain such information; scamming through social engineering, selling to advertisers etc. I bet it could fetch much more than the asking price here. It would be better to be wary of any social engineering attempts though.

Good on Trezor for scrubbing their user info regularly, hope to see other companies do the same.
3185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Node Block Propagation Delays / Connectivity Issues on: May 25, 2020, 02:11:10 AM
I then attempted to connect again through an android device with my node running the new bitcoin.conf file and yet my node still banded the IP address my device that I was trying to connect to it.  Very strange.  Either way I think there may be a few different issues going on here.  1) Comcast fighting my node and 2) something wrong with either Green wallet or bitcoin core nodes banning the wallet when specifying a SPV node IP address.
Hmm. It could be a problem with how your wallet interacts with the node. Misbehaving node is likely a problem with your client rather than your ISP. It could also be that your banscore is too high and the node would just automatically reject the wallet. To clarify, which android wallet are you using?

You can try whitelisting your IP by putting whitelist=(IP ADDRESS), replacing IP address with the public IP address on your phone.
Either way I think that there needs to be a lot more bitcoin wallets which allow you to run your own nodes as the validating source based on whatever port you want.  It's scary to think about how few options there are out there.
Electrum is probably the only effective one as most wallets are phasing out bloom filter at the moment and there isn't any defined standards yet.
3186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Node Block Propagation Delays / Connectivity Issues on: May 25, 2020, 01:08:44 AM
1) I haven't noticed any issues with my normal browsing through Comcast.

2) My plan currently doesn't have any limits.  As you said they have disabled them for Corona virus although even with them before it was never an issue for me.

3) I have loaded bitcoin core node on another computer completely on the same WIFI and it too experienced the same symptoms.
My guess is that Comcast has been selectively blocking connections to try to conserve bandwidth for other users. Throttling is not uncommon for applications that are somewhat bandwidth intensive. That being said, could you share your debug.log? This would be able to confirm the theory.
That all said however I cannot seem to find a bitcoin wallet app that I can use on my android devices in which I can specify my IP address of my node and this port is non standard port from the VPN (i.e. not 8333).  I did try using  Green wallet but for some strange reason every time I connect to my node it flags the wallets as misbehaving nodes.  I wonder why that would be? I've tried this from android wallets behind several different VPN gateways and even without using a VPN and same results every single time.  Node misbehaving.
The problem is not with your VPN. Starting with Bitcoin Core 0.19, bloom filter has been disabled by the client by default. In Bitcoin.conf, insert the following line: peerbloomfilters=1

Restart your client and try connecting again.
3187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Checking old wallet files... on: May 24, 2020, 03:18:48 PM
Is it true that Legacy wallet transactions aren't shown in there?
No. If your wallet is functioning correctly and there were transactions inside, the transactions would still be shown.

Are you certain that it is synchronized? Rescanning tends to take sometime as it has to scan through the blockchain for the transaction.
3188  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Help Needed - Antminer S9 Poor Performance on: May 24, 2020, 03:14:08 PM
this is what i do not understand, i was getting more with my 4 GTX cards, even with the halving i assumed the Antmier would still give me more return than the cards, i only had 1x1080Ti, 1x1060, 2x1050Ti

with the cards      i was pulling in 0.00015000 BTC      running at  480Watts
with the Antminer i was pulling in  0.00008000 BTC     running at 1280Watts

Firmware was from NH and i had the correct algorithm

Mining Payment From Your Mining Wallet  this was for 4 hours of mining on my cards
0.00002570 BTC
£0.20

Mining Payment From Your Mining Wallet this was for 4 hours on my Antminer S9
0.00001692 BTC
£0.13
It's very unlikely that your GPUs were mining Bitcoin in the first place. GPUs are nowhere as fast as ASICs right now.

If you can check NiceHash, you should probably find that your GPUs are not mining Bitcoin but some other altcoins that has greater profitability as ASICs are not developed for that algorithm yet.
3189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline node and my priv keys not working on: May 24, 2020, 09:56:17 AM
I didn't understand the underlined sentence. Addresses starting with 3 and bc1 are multisig, right? Addresses starting with 1 are not muktisig, if I'm not mistaken.
Nope. Addresses starting with 3 are P2SH (Pay to Script Hash) address. It allows the user to fulfill certain criteria before a transaction involving that address is valid. bc1 is a bech32 address, aka. native segwit. Address starting with 1 are P2PKH (Pay to Public Key Hash) address.

A multisig address has to be a P2SH address while a P2SH address doesn't necessarily has to be a multisig address.
3190  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China electric issue causes Bitcoin to pull back on: May 24, 2020, 09:43:10 AM
The mining hashrate is not fully indicative of the price movement of Bitcoin. There appears to be some FUD about Bitcoin when the hashrate decreased after halving, presumably also because of the movement of a bunch of coins which were untouched over the years.

In the long term, I highly doubt that the hashrate would influence price significantly, especially given the fact that a temporary interruption wouldn't affect security at any level. The electrical interruption might be a factor in the decrease of hashrate but IMO, the halving was responsible for the bulk of the decrease in hashrate.
3191  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Help Needed - Antminer S9 Poor Performance on: May 24, 2020, 08:49:35 AM
I have been using 1 x 1080Ti, 1 x 1060 (6gb), 2 x 1050Ti, on average i used to get around 0.00014500BTC per day.
For your GPUs, are you using SHA256 or other algorithms?
I invested in an Antminer to try out and got a S9 13.5Th, i tested in and all i am pulling in is around 0.00008000BTC, almost 50% less than my cards,

I have followed all of Nicehash instructions and downloaded there Firmware as requested on a previous ticket, since this my antminer seems very much quiet than before so has this affected performance ?

Your estimated earnings based on 13.5TH hashrate is roughly 0.0001121BTC a day, subjected to the pool's fees, varience and as such. If your nicehash dashboard is showing 13.5TH, there is likely nothing wrong with your ASIC.
3192  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Node Block Propagation Delays / Connectivity Issues on: May 24, 2020, 07:31:10 AM
Make sure you allow incoming connection and configure your router/firewall properly
It isn't necessary to allow incoming and I doubt OP would fix his issue with this. As long as there are peers, OP's client should be functioning fine.

It certainly isn't normal to have your client getting new blocks so long after it starts getting propagated (propagation should only take several minutes at the worst case scenario). Have you done any hardware diagnostics? Your debug.log should provide some clues at least.
3193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If War breaks out between China and the US, can China hack Bitcoin? on: May 23, 2020, 01:49:53 PM
What good would it do if China hacks Bitcoin? Bitcoin doesn't belong to any country.
Op does have a point here. Even if BTC is decentralized and doesn't belong to any specific country, it is still money which itself is the most important resource when waging wars.
Bitcoin is not fiat though. It isn't a currency that is endorsed by the government. If anything, fiat is the resource that would be used during war. You probably won't see governments paying contractors in Bitcoin during a war. The spending during a war would take hundreds of billions and I highly doubt Bitcoin in its entirety would be able to finance even a significant portion of it.

Attacking Bitcoin through 51% would be a waste of resources and even if they manage to attack Bitcoin, it would quickly become worthless and all their resources would've gone to waste.
3194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline node and my priv keys not working on: May 23, 2020, 01:19:43 PM
But I'm always getting the same privkey for any address I have.
I have tried the same for the default address where there is also an address that I actually don't use, and the privkey is different. I can't understand why it gives me the same privkey in this wallet that I'm trying to do it.

You mean to create 2 new addresses and check their private keys?
If you aren't getting any error when you dump the priv key, it would appear that there isn't an issue with the commands given.

To clarify, when you mean any address, you mean when you use any 2 different addresses from the same type? Ie, You're querying 2 different bc1 addresses, 2 different P2PWSH or 2 different legacy addresses? Does the address start with 5, K or L?
3195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If War breaks out between China and the US, can China hack Bitcoin? on: May 23, 2020, 01:14:47 PM
What good would it do if China hacks Bitcoin? Bitcoin doesn't belong to any country.

If you mean being able to hack Bitcoin by the use of 51% attacks, which is pretty much the only attack that they can execute, then you're wrong. In terms of the global transaction volume, Bitcoin isn't used by any government as a store of value. It would make sense if you could paralyse another country by restricting their financial flow but it can't be the case. The most that they can do is to stop the citizen from using Bitcoin which doesn't really affect people since most of the transactions are in fiat as of now.
3196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Old pre 2012 wallet files on bitcoin core question on: May 23, 2020, 11:21:08 AM
Others told me I could see the balances, but I don't know where I can see these old adresses. (I only have a password written down on a text file and the .dat file, all other info is lost).
Would've worked only if you are absolutely certain where all your coins are which is nearly always not the case.
To go to cmd in bitcoin core, I just need to go to settings I presume? Or do you mean command on a linux device? (I'm using windows as you might have guessed Smiley.

thanks for all the help so far

Command prompt allows you to run Bitcoin Core with a specific flag. If you don't have a basic knowledge of using command prompt, I would encourage you to use this method instead, courtesy of achow101:
https://achow101.com/2016/07/Bitcoin-Core-Troubleshooting#option-startup

Add -upgradewallet to the string at the end.

If you do not already have a shortcut for Bitcoin Core, go to the start menu, right click on the Bitcoin Core program and select open file location. You should be able to see a shortcut for Bitcoin Core in that folder. Right click on its properties and in the target box, just add -upgradewallet to the end. After doing so once and seeing Bitcoin Core start up, you can do the same to remove the -upgradewallet flag from the shortcut.
3197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Business Accepts Small Payments - They Are Arriving In Wallet "Unspendable" on: May 23, 2020, 10:18:17 AM
I am using the BitLox wallet currently, but am open to alternatives.
What kind of business are you running? A brick and mortar store or an online website?

I don't encourage people who are running a business to use normal wallets or hardware wallets. It would be a lot more convenient for merchants to adopt POS services like Bitpay, cryptopayments etc. They streamline the process for you and you don't usually have to worry about menial stuff like this.
And also to clarify - this isn’t because the sender didn’t include a high enough fee - I’ve had transactions like that stay “pending” for a few hours, but they’ve always cleared.

The message next to these transactions hasn’t disappeared after days, though these are confirmed transactions in my wallet.

Perhaps the Bitlox wallet is simply aware of the massive fees at the moment? And when they return to normal, my warnings will vanish?
The network fee surges at times and it doesn't always cost so much to send funds. If possible, you should wait for a bit for the network to get less busy before sending the funds elsewhere. Sending the funds now would eat into your revenue by a significant portion.
3198  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shower thought. If nations/states/governments are accumulating Bitcoin, then on: May 23, 2020, 10:10:23 AM
It's hard to say they are holding because as a government, they should be transparent on how they will manage the wealth of the nation.
Also, it's kinda odd that a government who like a centralized policy investing in a decentralized system, if they would like bitcoin to be a success in the future, then they should be legalizing everything to give way on improvement of the adoption process.

Bitcoin has always been an speculative asset, being a store of value is sometimes makes people doubtful due to its price volatility.
They don't. A lot of the governments around the world do not disclose about the things that they invest in as it concerns national security. Let's treat crypto as a reserve currency. If governments disclose the amount of reserve that they have, it could have detrimental effects since outsiders would know exactly how much they have.

Governments like North Korea could potentially be using cryptos as a way to circumvent international sanctions and disclosing it would only make the world impose harsher sanctions.
3199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Old pre 2012 wallet files on bitcoin core question on: May 23, 2020, 09:32:49 AM
I don't know the address or anything, I just have the .dat file itself from a backup (all the other info was lost) and the passphrase.
I'm willing to download the full blockchain again, that's not the issue, but I was wondering why there's no good info out there to really restore an old wallet file.
Even if you do know the address, if it's an old backup, it would be better for you to resync the whole blockchain to ensure that you'll be able to get all the coins in the addresses within your wallet.dat.

So if I have 2011.dat for example, and rename it to wallet.dat and place it in the bitcoin folder where the new wallet is then restart bt core then it should work?
I heard older wallet files were incompatible since 2012 or something.
Yes. Do keep a backup of your wallet.dat though (both your current and 2011). It's true that the wallet.dat files had its structured modified slightly but its not wholly incompatible. The client would be able to identify and upgrade your wallet.dat to ensure compatibility. Using cmd, navigate to the folder where you have your Bitcoin Core installed and start it with -upgradewallet flag.
3200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline node and my priv keys not working on: May 23, 2020, 03:12:49 AM
Are you generating all 3 types of addresses? By default, Bitcoin Core only generates native segwit. Did you modify the conf file to generate legacy address?

How are you extracting the private key exactly? A single private key can be used to derive all 3 address types. Could you try dumping 2 different bc1 addresses and check the private keys?
