If it looks to be in nearly pristine condition, with it's little clear plastic "coffin", you can sell it on Enay for way more than it could ever produce in income.
322  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: September 08, 2016, 06:26:13 AM
Good afternoon. My question to Antminer R4 offer power supply
APW5, 1300W-2600W PSU instead buy APW3 + -12-1600 PSU will work? And What of them more than noise?

While I have owned neither of these, I think I can comment on a couple of items:

For the APW3 (1600W) power supply to work you MUST supply it at least 208V or it won't even start. If all you have is 120V (common USA outlet), then the AWP3 noise doesn't matter since you can't us it.

My impression, though no direct experience, is that the AWP3 isn't a very quiet power supply. I am sure there are others that can comment from experience, but I expect the AWP3 might well be noisier than the R4 miner itself. The form factor, and small cooling fans (i.e. high RPM), usually result in a fairly loud power supply.

I expect that the two items above are what led Bitmain to produce the AWP5.
323  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: September 07, 2016, 08:33:43 PM
There was a rumor that Avalon was going to formally announce their A7 on September 7th. That appears to have been unfounded. Maybe Bitmain believed the rumor as well, and wanted to decide how they should price the S9 and R4?

Purely speculative on my part, no specific insight.

325  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: So, only one Bitcoin miner on market right now. on: September 05, 2016, 05:59:50 PM
Mining equipment wars have, at least temporarily, ended, and a winner emerged.
BFL, KnC, Spoondolies have all bitten the dust, Bitfury and Avalon are no longer competitive and will probably close the shop too.
Antminer R4 is the only profitable miner on the market right now (R9 are not sold to the public at the moment).

That's not a healthy situation IMO. Do we have any hope for it to change in the future?

While at this exact instant in time, there aren't any S9's available, I am 100% certain that Bitmain will make more and put them up for sale. I expect the "No S9 for sale" to be a transient condition that reflects their batch sale strategy. The s9 has most assuredly been for sale to the public and will be again.

You could easily see another time when the R4 isn't available, and the S9 is.

Avalon is supposedly going to deliver the A7 (follow on to the A6). Specs and price are unknown. You are correct about KNC, BFL, and Spondoolies. Bitfury might yet come back to life, but that's fairly speculative at the moment.
326  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: is the mining bitcoin in home profitable? on: August 31, 2016, 04:53:08 AM
Actually, Bitmain is planning to release a miner that will make home mining profitable again due to its low power consumption. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope they deliver as promised - it's called the R4. Lips sealed

Well, it looks like we can put this to rest. The R4 as I read on the Bitmain website priced at $1395 for 8.6 TH. Compared to the 11.85TH S9, it's hugely "over-priced" on a USD/TH basis. As I first mentioned, it should be way more friendly to run in your home, and you pay a pretty penny for that convenience. Add at least 2 months to the time it takes for you to "break even" in terms of you mining adventure.

The R4 is clearly designed to maximize Bitmain's profit, until they have some competition.I think both the R4 and the S9 lines have plenty of profit, so that the price can be reduced when Bitmain needs to.

Everything I've seen about the Antminer R4 suggests that it will make home mining more practical, not necessarily more profitable. It will no doubt be quieter than their flagship S9, produce less heat, and draw less power. It should be more practical to run from a single 120V outlet.  It will also produce less hashrate. All that is good to entice some folks into buying a miner, but it doesn't automatically translate into a profit for the purchaser.

Kind of interesting that they called it an R4, kinda like a a follow on to the very low power, very low hash rate R1. Though really completely unrelated.
328  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Getting back into BTC mining on: August 21, 2016, 08:30:26 PM
You should start mining as soon as possible, don't wait, don't walk, Run and buy S7, or better yet S9 miners from Bimain. Do it now! The sooner you start mining, the sooner you can become a millionaire like me! I'm writing this from a Cray super computer, I live in a castle, drive a Ferrari, have a big bosom blonde wife who services me like a king, all due to Bitcoin mining! Forget the other altcoin crap, Bitcoin is where real money is, just look at this ugly phat ass niggaz!

I have checked with some of my buddies at Cray, and I am 100% certain that talks_cheep does NOT own a a Cray supercomputer. I cannot comment on his Ferrari, busty blond wife, or castle....

...but if you have a 10Kwatt photovoltaic pharm and you can home mining at 0 euro electricity cost?

Everyone just naturally assumes that a solar array makes "free electricity" and hence is perfect for mining. There are a couple of major flaws with that theory.

1) If you have no other source of equally "free electricity", then you are limited to mining when the sun is shining.

2) You should consider what your alternative uses are for for your "free solar power". If you could use all the solar power you have to replace some $.14/KWh electricity consumption, then your actual cost for mining is $.14/KWh, not zero as you might think. Economists call this "Opportunity Cost". Do a little research on this and you'll see what I mean.

3) The cost of the initial install is usually fairly high. What could have done with money instead of building a solar array for mining (See #2 above)?
330  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: My portable Raspberry Pi setup for mining on: August 21, 2016, 07:31:23 AM
If/When you get "serious" (your word), portability will not be in your vocabulary. There is no serious mining hardware that is the least bit portable. The power consumption is just way too high.

While I am a big fan of Raspberry Pi hardware, in terms of Bitcoin mining, it's only useful as a controller or monitor of much larger, and not portable, hardware.
331  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: No block confirmed for more than 1 hour 30 minutes! on: August 21, 2016, 06:37:32 AM
While the discussion of what transactions get included next is quite interesting, it really isn't quite on point for the thread. If I had 1000BTC that I wanted to send, and it took well over an hour, I would be quite annoyed. It also gives lie to the common perception:

Bitcoin moves money quite fast (sometimes)
332  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Aug 2 to Aug 16. Picks are yet to start. prize =0.00 on: August 05, 2016, 08:14:35 PM
The counter intuitive thing is that the more we talk about how bad it is, the rising diff and dropping price, the more hash that appears to be coming online.  Maybe it's not old gear, but rather new and not publicized gear.

So far, there isn't any obvious downward trend on BTC price, for the last 48 hours. If anything it's a tiny up tick.
333  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Looking for Avalon6 dongle and cables on: August 04, 2016, 08:55:53 PM
At one time, BlockC sold the dongle on their website. My recollection was about $20 for the dongle, and maybe $2 for the cable. Back in the spring they supplied me with a cable to replace one that was incorrectly built. The dongle I had was fine, but if the cable isn't right, you are still dead in the water.
334  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain R1 - When is the chip going to be upgraded on: August 02, 2016, 06:10:28 PM
My personal opinion is that the Antminer R1 will be placed in a glass case, right next to the 21 Inc. Bitcoin computer, and the Bitfury Mining Light Bulb.
335  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S7, S9 Rackmount Self on: July 28, 2016, 05:17:32 AM
OP might want to revise the title of this thread. I assume "Self" should actually be "Shelf"?
336  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S9 : 1 board running hot - worth rearranging? on: July 27, 2016, 08:43:12 PM
I think that there is little value in trying to get a uniform temperature across the 3 blade, give the current tube design. As long as the cool boards aren't too cold, and the hot board isn't too hot, you should probably just get used to a temperature variance. The 3 boards don't all get the same amount of consistent airflow across the heatsinks. Similar yes, but different enough to result in different temperatures.

While Bitmain warranty service doesn't appear to be all that good, what's the warranty like on an S9 purchase via Aliexpress? Anybody have thoughts or experience with items there?
339  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: DOES anyone fix titan board?> on: July 25, 2016, 06:45:58 PM
YES. Look for a thread by "lightfoot" regarding his repair efforts on KNC Titan and Neptune boards.

340  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: difficulty finally dropping like expected- dramatically. on: July 24, 2016, 08:01:47 PM
It doesn't make sense that miners are shutting down now.  Before the block reward halving, KNCminer reprted they would have to declare bankruptcy due to their electricity costs.  At a time when Bitcoin was worth ~$480, they claimed their cost per Bitcoin was $440 (this is from memory, it might have been slightly more or less) and their electricity costs were $0.196 per kWhr.  I did some math and it turns out that about $200 of that cost per Bitcoin was electricity.  Difficulty has not increased significantly since their announcement so after the halving, the cost per coin for electricity would be ~ $400 and the total cost per coin ~ $640.  Bitcoin is still worth more than that.  Also, KNC would have been the most expensive miner out there with the cost of living in Sweden and the electricity costs considered not to mention their taxes are through the roof.  Consider also this:

422107 (Main Chain) 2016-07-24 16:59:14 KnCMiner  000000000000000001b63fcce1fa4b54bdf35971ac553ed7d50f97777d2963fc

Who is shutting down!?  I say it's just an anomaly and is simply an extended bout of bad luck that is indicating an apparent decline in hash rate even though all the equipment is still mining.  I don't believe it is caused by miners shutting down (at least not yet).

I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from KNC's decision to declare bankruptcy. They most assuredly didn't wait until they had no choice. Their decision looks to me to be more preemptive in nature. KNC must have some gear that's worth running anymore, and they can easily turn that off as they start to unwind their operations. They don't have to have a "fire sale", though liquidation companies sometime just want to get through the process of converting assets into money (fiat, not BTC).

I think there is plenty of gear being turned off due to the halving. It may not be just huge farms, but a thousand farms for which a small profit isn't interesting any more. When the easy money evaporates, some folks will just quit. If they can find a buyer, then their gear will return to service somewhere.
