321  Economy / Computer hardware / WTB: 5870 reference cooler on: March 01, 2012, 10:48:54 PM
I need a reference cooler for a 5870 to replace one that was damaged.  Does not matter if the fan is working or included, but I need the heatsink, backplate, and plastic cowling.

Let me know if you have one for sale

$25 plus shipping.

I'll PM you

rapid expansion plan

With investment, it should be possible to add capacity quickly.  After a post-IPO built-out, my preference would be to reinvest and add capacity more than pay dividends.  I'm thinking of a split of profits between reinvestment and dividends along the lines of 70/30.

Comments?

What about a BFL farm if they can meet the demand or a farm of Rig Box devices ?

That would be something new and not done before in the community.

I've thought about that.  I suspect FPGA rigs like that might be the future, but I'm not ready to make that jump for the following reasons:
1) Who knows if/when BFL will deliver the big boxes and what their real specs will be
2) I already have the 6990's and can easily add more (infrastructure is in place to expand)
3) Current FPGA's aren't as attractive when power is very cheap ($/Mh is high to acquire)
4) GPUs can be rented out to do other kinds of processing if bitcoin mining loses profitability
5) You can always sell GPUs to gamers

325  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6990's and risers - actual experiences? on: February 29, 2012, 10:04:34 PM
Very helpful.  I use cgminer also, so it's really nice to see actual output.  I thought I read that I 5 was the best intensity setting.  Have you found that 9 is best?
5 maybe if its your desktop and you use it at the same time, otherwise 9 for a dedicated rig (8 if on p2pool).

Awesome, thanks

Do you need the heatsink with the sempron? I have a 145 that I would be willing to sell, but I don't really want to ship the HS with it.

Yes, you need a heatsink.    If you underclock/undervolt it and have plenty of wind in the case you might not need a fan, but I still recommend it.

I think he was asking whether I already had one so that he could just send the bare CPU.  I can't imagine running the CPU without a heatsink.  You'd probably get this:

I mostly let cgminer manage everything.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7.
PSU: 2x 1200W Modular ANTEC High Current Pro HCP-1200.

Thanks.  I was considering almost exactly the same setup.

What do you do for cooling?  I'm guessing this is an open air rig?

Yes, completely open. Cards are spaced approx. 1 inch apart...

Do you have any extra fans either in front or behind?  How are temps?  Just trying to figure out if having four next to each other creates some kind of heat issues

Running a 8 GPU, 4x 6990 rig. Here are my findings:
- Windows 7 64bit with cgminer.
- I'm using 4 molex powered 16x risers without problems. They came from Cablesaurus.
- Power is split over 2 PSUs also with cables from Cablesaurus.
- I had to disable various motherboard components in the BIOS (esata, USB 3, ...), otherwise the 4th card wouldn't be recognized.

Rig has been running stable for the last 4-5 months.

Any questions? Shoot... ;-)

Thanks for the info.  What are you using for a mobo and PSU?

I need to buy several of the following:

* Sempron AM3 CPU
* 2.5" SATA hard drives (20 or 40GB)
* 1 GB DDR3 RAM sticks

Reply to the thread or PM me if you're selling.

335  Economy / Lending / [Repaid] 200 btc of loan/loans needed for 30 days on: February 27, 2012, 08:48:35 AM
For those who have followed my previous loan, I no longer need as much or for as long.  I will one or more loans totaling 200btc for the last of my mining hardware purchases. Open to various size loans and any reasonable interest rate.

Loan will be repaid with mining profits (I have about 40GH on maxbtc.com)

Thanks!  Smiley

Past loans I've had and repaid:

Thread got OT and I've figured out how to cover most of my need without a loan.  Opening a new thread to seek a smaller, shorter-term loan.

2x 6990s in one rig has not been a problem for me. also in the rig was a 5850.

Powered or unpowered risers?  What mobo?

339  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6990's and risers - actual experiences? on: February 27, 2012, 05:33:08 AM
The main thing that I have found is that the risers themselves tend to be rather fragile. While they are flexible and will bend, it is best to avoid much bending or twisting at all.

While I do not use 6990s, I believe that it is actually correct that 5870s (which I use) pull more power from the PCIe slot itself than 6990s do. Reason being that the 6990s have 8 pin power connectors and use them to the fullest advantage.

I run a lot of 5870's with unpowered risers without a problem on a variety of motherboards.  Hmmm.
340  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 6990's and risers - actual experiences? on: February 27, 2012, 04:00:28 AM
I'm building some rigs with 6990's.  I have been told different things by different people.  One person has said that you cannot use risers with the 6990's because they draw too much power (even if using the molex powered version), while another person has said that you don't want them directly connected to the PCI slots (e.g. 3 x 6990s on an MSI 890FXA-GD70) or you will cause problems from heat or something.

For those of you who are running multiple 6990's per rig, what have you found? Are risers (powered or not) at all problematic?
