Spam = transactions made for the purpose of disrupting the network.

Why would somebody do that?  What is the advantage for them?
3382  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? on: April 17, 2011, 11:48:40 PM

Yeah, I would hope that the WHOIS For the site is accurate since having inaccurate info in the WHOIS is grounds for domain termination under ICANN's terms. And given that ICANN is an American company...

Using a 'privacy protection' service is apparently acceptable.  That is how bitcoin.org is registered with a service from Japan.  You could start a lawsuit in Japan to figure out who really owns bitcoin.org and that would almost certainly fail.

Put your bitcoin address in your signature.  You never know when someone might toss you a coin for the app you already created.   Wink

Thought I did, looks like the profile editor doesn't work in Chrome!  Huh Oh well. Works in Safari. Thanks for the tip Tongue

Hey everyone! I'm a small time iOS developer looking to get some bitcoins, so I figured why not put my skills to work?

I've only got one app of my own available on the App Store. It's a free one called Creationist Claims Index, available at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/creationist-claims-index/id340531927?mt=8

All of my other work has been freelancing for others. I generally don't do work based on an hourly fee, I feel like a per-project fee is much fairer to both parties, so PM me your idea and we can get talkin!

Web site is down but the pool still is sending out getworks and my my miner is hashing them
Well... hopefully the server is counting them. It probably is, but I always get a little nervous when something like this happens to a site I have invested so much in already.
When this happened before all work was counted and paid.  I think it is just the front end.  While annoying there is no harm done.
3386  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitBid - Bitcoin Auction House on: April 16, 2011, 11:09:22 PM

His fee is one time. So you may only get 20 BTC for your key, but then you only have a 5 BTC loss to make up from there. Right now, I'm using BiddingPond. Until I have a reason to switch, I don't think I will.

That actually is a problem as well, not just the amount of the fee, but it also nearly guarantees his long term failure, even if he is successful short term.   You need an ongoing source of income to run a business.  While it is not the definition of a ponzi scheme, it is close if you only take a (large) fee upfront.  Now new customers are paying for the operating expenses of the older ones.  Once the new customers dry up, there is no money to come in and pay the bills.  The business folds along with all of those large upfront fees.

Ok. Who is the owner of this website? How things are going? Someone HAS to know him.

Who purchased bitcoin.org?

3388  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Looking for a party that can reserve Bitcoins (aka Call Option) on: April 16, 2011, 09:05:08 PM
I want to reserve between 500 to 2100 BTC at the current ask price and have the ability to purchase them at said price within the next 7 days, in addition to paying you a 1% commission at time of transaction. With that said, there will be no absolute obligation to purchase.

Please inform me if you are interested.
How much would you pay for this option and how would you pay for the bitcoins if you exercised this option.

Speculators is fine, I'm not a fan of hoarders. I guess you could just call them long term speculators though  Grin

Hoarders make the price of bitcoin go up even more then speculators do.
3391  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitBid - Bitcoin Auction House on: April 16, 2011, 08:52:33 PM
I intend BitBid to stay around. I picked that price to be high enough to discourage people from signing up just to spam stuff. I figure if people are serious about selling things the 25btc price at the start will be small change compared to what they would pay eBay in posting and closing fees over a year. This one time fee is for the life of the site. You can post as many auctions as you want until the site goes bankrupt or bitcoin gets shut down. I am considering a launch discount for forum members as thanks for all their support of bitcoin. Everything is still fluid and could change depending on suggestions and opinions. I want BitBid to be a site people respect and use for years to come.

But setting a pricing structure like that, you guarantee the site will have very few sellers.  Why would I go to your site (with currently zero visitors) and place an auction up when I can go to ebay and post for free and have millions of people see it.

Or better yet, I can go to Biddingpond.com (as far as I know they are the 'first mover' in the bitcoin auction space) and list for free, and have more people see the item then on your site where I have to drop 25btc?

3392  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitBid - Bitcoin Auction House on: April 16, 2011, 02:28:12 PM
I'm getting very close to being finished with my new website BitBid. It is an auction website like eBay but everything is priced in BTC. Anyone can sign up to bid but you need a BitBid premium account to post auctions. A one time registration fee grants you unlimited auctions for life with no posting or closing fees. The current price of a premium account is somewhere between 24 and 25 BTC. Upon registration a random value between the two will be chosen for you to pay. The decimal amount you pay is used as an identifier to ensure your payment is credited to the correct account. This makes it easy for me to verify who has paid and when. Check it out at http://www.bitbid.net

The price for registration seems very high.  Also having a large one time fee and no further support for your business from a given customer is a pretty bad business model (if your goal is to stay operating) but is a GREAT business model if your goal is to take the money and run.
3393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Online poker companies indicted for fraud on: April 16, 2011, 01:32:53 AM
the problem was they used the oldest trick in the book to conceal gambling payments 'hey.. let's make some fake US merch accounts and then pretend our users are buying jewels and golf balls!' /facepalm

you can't use bitcoin for gambling because the value change too much. you could use liberty reserve however

The value of a bitcoin changing relative to other currencies such as the dollar does not stop or even cause any harm for gambling.  The value of the dollar changes vs the euro as well.  Both can are still used for gambling.
3394  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin mining profitability calculator on: April 15, 2011, 02:11:04 PM
If you add a box to increase difficulty rate at a percent rate per change such as 10% it might be pretty close to reality.

I see the difficulty rate rising at about 10% a change for at least a few months.
3395  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Impact of Difficulty vs. Hashing profit on: April 14, 2011, 05:41:24 AM
moreover this depends also to the "cost" of BTC. (BTC vs $) Wink

True.  If at difficulty 150k a bitcoin is worth $1.5 then mining is still profitable.
3396  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Impact of Difficulty vs. Hashing profit on: April 14, 2011, 05:40:12 AM
As the difficulty continues to rise due to popularity of bitcoin, it is becoming more and more unfeasible to purchase new equipment to mine.

In my locale, it will become unfeasible vs. cost of electricity to mine at around 130k difficulty.  That's fast approaching.

How do you others plan to deal with this?

I also would shut down.  There is no reason to keep going and make it harder for others with lower cost electricity.  I will also at the end have a good deal of hardware that I can sell.   I figure if a rig is making 10% of its value in net profit I should keep it going.  If it is a $400 rig and it is making less then $20 net it would be better to sell the rig vs having it depreciate even more.

And by the way, 5870's @ 370 Mhash/s?  Did you kill something to achieve this?

This doesn't require voodoo.

What does it require?  I get 330 with 900mhz clocks, i know i could go higher on the clock a bit but choose not too.

It requires going higher on the clocks!   Cheesy

Playing with other settings. Finding the right combo of drivers / sdk. Reading the forum and see what works for others. Basically try different things until you see an improvement.

Ok.  900mhz and 330M is fine with me then.  I do not want to push my cards over 900mhz.
3398  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Building a 6990 Rig - Operating System on: April 13, 2011, 09:45:22 PM
I have both windows 7 64 bit machines and windows xp 32 bit machines.  The 5870's do the same in both machines, 330k at 900mhz clock.  I use the latest stream as I could NOT get 2.1 to work.

The windows 7 64 bit machines run smooth an can be used for something else, the XP machines feel doggy but produce the same hash rates.  If you are not using it other then mining it does not seem to matter.

It is full retail box. The shrink wrap is 'tight' and it does have signs of age.

I am in the USA.  20 btc before shipping though your location is going to drive up cost.
