Do not put WD40 on the fan. That's is the worst lubricant to use in a very dust heavy area. WD40 is sticky, and dust likes to find its way into every nook and cranny. The result: A fan that moves even slower.

If you change wishing well into a washing machine, then I fear you are far from the first.

A $5 case fan is a great investment for an expensive graphics card. Newegg has a ton of fans, shipping time is the only concern from there. Also, when you get decent airflow through your case, you should be leaving it closed. Having the sides off will disrupt the ideal airflow and cause the air to not follow the in-the-front out-the-back/top model.
And have fun with those self tapping screws!

That's what happens when you try to get rich quick.

...and faith in a god that may or may not exist.
I bet we can get the FSM to back Bitcoin.

Now I'll use them to..well.. mine bitcoins for you. Yeah, take that.
The issue is not that but username/password replication. You wouldn't believe how many people use the same username login and password for every website they have an account for. We could totally hijack his facebook page!

Who knows if ASIC mining chips will come (unless they're here and I'm uninformed). The thing about graphics cards is they're multipurpose and wont be useless in their post mining life.

You might want to edit out your username/password from your post.

You mean to say that me worrying sick about yet another piece of evidence of this encroachment of fascism and M-Tux becoming a Konzentrationslager kapo, was all for nothing?
Hey, what's wrong with Fascism? At least they have great muffins there! Jokes aside, I think it'd be silly for someone to think that their transactions are anonymous when they deal with mtgox. You have an account, you're ip is probably recorded when logging in. And to make it worse, you send your money to/from a Dwolla account, check, or other very traceable routes.

Sounds like the case has poor airflow. If you're using an old case, you're probably not getting sufficient airflow through it since they weren't designed with these monstrous graphics cards in mind. I say this since there is hot air coming from the back of the card, which should not happen if enough fans are pulling air out of the case.
Depending on your case, you can try to alter the air pressure in the case by adding more fans to the top and sides (if the case allows for it).
The airflow that I use in my cases is called Positive Airflow. What this comes down to is basically having more fans as outtake than intake. The fan at the front of the case stays as intake, while the fans on the top, back, and side are used for exhaust. Since there are more fans exhausting, air will get pulled in from the cracks and other open areas of the case (like the screen meshes some cases have in the front). If done correctly, you will be able to feel air getting sucked in from these places. The advantage of this is that air will constantly be flowing through the case, and no air will "sit" inside. The disadvantage is that there is a higher chance dust will get inside your case since air will be getting sucked in where there are not fans. I personally use this method and recommend it.
Or if you want a simple approach, add a exhaust fan to the top of the case. I had a mining rig without it for a while, and you could feel the heat radiate from the top. Now that there's a fan on top, the hot air gets pulled out and replaced with fresh air much better than it did before.
Of course this is all assuming that you have a case that can have fans added to it. If not, I'd suggest getting a case with good airflow. Cases are pretty cheap at newegg, and a lot have free shipping.

Deepbit has a 3% fee for the proportional.
The main thing big pool have going for them is uptime and payout consistency. At the moment I'm mining at deepbit because BTCGuild is having connection and scaling issues. When those are resolved I'll probably head back there.
With all the ddos attacks and scaling issues of the smaller pools, staying on a pool for more than a few days is rare for me.

I went out and bought 15 lawnmowers today.
Good thing I already have a lawnmower and don't need to invest in anymore hardware. Hopefully it'll put out similar grasshashes/sec. Now I need to figure out a way to keep it running 24/7.

oi i know the feeling. I'm finally practically forcing my mother to let me pick out the hardware for her new computer. Shes been obsessed with laptops for the last 2 decades, even though she has never moved it from her computer desk. So shes been paying top dollar for underpowered hardware. Finally I think she will have a decent computer!
She must be a big fan of Mac.

For stable performance it's suggested to be using both power connectors.

Just saw this on the bitcoin wiki: Protocol modifications, such as increasing the block award from 50 to 100 BTC, are not compatible with clients already running in the network. If the developers were to release a new client that the majority of miners perceives as corrupt, or in violation of the project’s aims, that client would simply not catch on, and the few users who do try to use it would find that their transactions get rejected by the network. Maybe a protocol change isn't viable at this time.

Right now a lot of people look at BTC as a get rich scheme, which is probably playing into the instability of the price per coin (don't quote me though, I'm not an econ guy). I think most of us are waiting for more places to accept bitcoins, since the main thing you can do with them is trade them on mtgox or some other echange site. There's also Silk Road, which I still haven't checked out. For me, bitcoin is fun. I enjoy building computers and browsing hardware; bitcoin convinced me to make another high end system and make a multiple gpu computer for a change. It's also fun for me to help with hardware and computer related issues. If bitcoin doesn't take off, then I'm not at a loss. I've almost evened out with my hardware, and I'm enjoying the maintenance of my mining rig. If I make some money off of it, then that'd be awesome. If you adopt mining or bitcoin for fun, I'm sure you will get something out of it. If you invest in it thinking in a week you'll be rolling in $20s, then you'll probably be disappointed. Welcome to the community btw

That's actually a good thought, unless we've missed something about how BTC works. Something smaller would probably make solo mining better, as more people would be able to find blocks. I wonder if this wasn't thought of because the opencl mining wasn't considered when creating BTC.

I'm assuming that you game and do other things on your PC other than mine BTC. I'd suggest going for a bigger upgrade for instead of getting a lesser card just to mine. I think that'd be a smarter investment because you'll be using that card for more than just mining, making it less of an investment risk. This link has a comparison of various cards and their hashing power: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison. 6950's are looking pretty good for price, hashing, and performance power.

I was having issues like this with two 5830's on Windows xp sp3. What solved this problem was extending the display to the second monitor (right click desktop -> properties -> setting tab). My crossfire bridge is/was off when I did this.
