341  Economy / Economics / Re: Bank holiday in Greece on: July 01, 2015, 07:51:52 AM
Really very pathetic, please read the cries and hues of the people in Greece http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/greek-banks-close-as-cash-machines-run-dry/story-e6frg8zx-1227419442216

“How can something like this happen without prior warning?” asked Angeliki Psarianou, a 67-year-old retired public servant, who stood in the drizzle after arriving too late at one empty ATM in the Greek capital. “I want Tsipras to tell me how I am going to make it through the week with €10 in my bag with rent coming up. It has never been as bad as this.”

Source link said subscribers only so putting up a second source

It sucks for that public servant as one you would expect them to be aware of the news being part of government even after retiring and second that's no excuse to not have some money stored on you for a rainy day.
(But I am curious how will people pay rents with a $66 bank machine limit each day)
Perhaps they can run up Visa's as paying rent would be a pain with a $66/day cap.
342  Economy / Economics / Re: First Greece...who next? on: July 01, 2015, 07:46:35 AM
japan situation is different they are not under a central authority, they are under their own istituion, their crisis can be fixed like greece would fix their economic issue when it will leave europe, on the other hand, italy seems to be the third that is akin to greece, i think they have a bigger chance to be the next one

I agree with tineye on this one Japan is able to handle its debt because its internal, if Greece gets the international lenders off its back and defaults it has a better chance at managing internal debt to Greek citizens under a Soverign owned central bank than under the current model its reliant on.
That said it will be painful for a few years akin to grabbing a leech of your skin and pulling it off but I presume they will make a relatively quick economic recovery.

It is interesting that a good chunk of Greece's debt is in part due to military spending and buying defective goods from Germany.

343  Economy / Economics / Re: If Greece defaults on: July 01, 2015, 07:27:21 AM
It is OVER! First country in the western world to ever fail to pay the IMF. Historical bust, bigger than Lehman Brothers for certain. This is it, game OVER.

It might be the beginning of an epic to be honest, if other EU countries in debt decide to default, or copy the effective IMF boycott by not paying back their debt obligations.

Austerity does not seem in a good sample of countries as it chokes their economic growth, taxing powers being weak aside. On the other hand there are still limited examples to prove that economic default can become a better option and choice for a country than retaining and protecting the banking system in the modern age, historically England and France default histories show that too many times in a row affects trust in the long run in regards to funding but defaulting once may not impact it as severly.

The case of Iceland illustrates one examples where banks were allowed to fail and economic growth followed, Greece could well be the second case if they decide to revert to the Drachma as they will still be able to secure trade with China, Russia and the EU who want to retain influence in Greece. I didn't including Zimbabwae in this sample as they decided to adopt a basket of currencies instead of retaining their own official currency which might be what the Greeks decide to do.

http://www.businessinsider.com/greece-is-looking-into-a-return-to-the-drachma-2015-6
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/11673989/Syriza-Left-demands-Icelandic-default-as-Greek-defiance-stiffens.html

Taking your bank back might work a few documentarys such as the Money Masters use the example of the Greenback and the good old illuminati Central Bank, a financial system under the control of a sovereign owned public bank does have its perks.

Syriza sources say measures being drafted include capital controls and the establishment of a sovereign central bank able to stand behind a new financial system. While some form of dual currency might be possible in theory, such a structure would be incompatible with euro membership and would imply a rapid return to the drachma.
344  Economy / Economics / Re: Greeks are rushing to Bitcoin on: July 01, 2015, 07:18:34 AM
With bank doors slammed shut, frantic Greeks are turning to online trading platforms to see if the digital money Bitcoin is a better bet than the euro.

The world's largest Bitcoin exchanges tell CNNMoney they've seen a surge of business from Greece.

Ten times as many Greeks are registering to trade bitcoins on the German marketplace Bitcoin.de than usual, according to CEO Oliver Flaskaemper. Bitcoin trades from Greece have shot up 79% from their ten-week average on Bitstamp, the world's third-largest exchange. Even trading platforms in China are getting interest. LakeBTC, headquartered in Shanghai, is seeing a 40% increase in visitors using computers in Greece.

[...]

http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/29/technology/greece-bitcoin/index.html

Taking advantage of a change in economic situations is a great way to increase Bitcoin adoption.
In the future when the currency stabalizes if the infrastructure for Bitcoin investments appears and remains constant in Greece it could keep and retain its adoption, what I would like to see now is for more services to set shop in Greece to trade Euros for Bitcoins and shops and merchants being targeted to increase adoption in the long term.
345  Economy / Economics / Re: Grexit on: July 01, 2015, 07:10:56 AM
It's inevitable somethings going to give somewhere.

I *hope* its the grexit....

but there seems to be always a last minute deal.

eventually though there won't.

The greexit has begun, as this deal and round of negotiations has failed.
That said of course that doesn't mean they won't continue to try, waits for a Greek NO Vote which means they want to leave the European Union willingly.
July 5 will be an interesting day towards the Grexit actually becoming a real economic and political choice.

uhh so what happened with Greece? no referendum and they said just Yes, more money from EU? how stupid they are..

The July 5th ballot question will say this so interpret it as you will.

It reads: “Should the outline of the agreement submitted by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund at the Eurogroup of 25/06/15 and which is made up of two parts that constitute their unified proposal be accepted?” before naming two documents written by those three institutions from bailout negotiations in Brussels that broke down last Friday.

346  Economy / Economics / Re: Will Bitcoin 'save' Greece? on: July 01, 2015, 07:05:04 AM
At the minimums though there will be some capital flight into alternative investments now that the IMF payment is officialy defaulted.
While not technically in default (In arrears being the term presently used) I do not see the average Greek person wanting to keep their money in the Banking system.

The question that to me seems interesting is if they truly Bankrupt and do an Iceland perhaps they will see a real economic recovery instead of following the bank dogma of too big to fail, it's rarely mentioned but Iceland has made one powerful economic recovery since defaulting.

348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Goldman Sachs survey on: June 26, 2015, 07:58:12 AM
From another viewpoint it would be similar to people saying they will never use the internet but as more merchants and services were provided online and it became easier to access web content adoption grew. The same is likely with Bitcoin so I see this survey as a good note at this time and would be interested in a follow-up survey next year.
Based on what they mentioned as long as costs are s and the User Experience is not particuarly hard more users will utilize it.
349  Economy / Speculation / Re: Climb to $400 once Ethereum is released (August) on: June 26, 2015, 07:40:02 AM
It's better if they sort all the bugs out now,  rather then after the live release, where real money is at risk.

I agree, Ethereum is progressing with its testnet and is looking to become quite useful.
We will still need to wait a bit longer to see what gets built in it but I am cautiously optimistic myself.
But as with all things wait and see is the mantra here.
350  Economy / Economics / Re: Is it helpful or harmful to the Bitcoin to offer products/services only in BTC? on: June 26, 2015, 07:38:04 AM
It's likely more helpful to support multiple payment providers than one exclusively, while it is possible to develop a niche having a larger cut of the market would result in more people going to your site and being aware of Bitcoin.
That said in part it also depends on what products you decide to offer whether it makes sense to just use Bitcoin to save costs or add on additional options.
351  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht Sentenced to Life in Prison on: June 26, 2015, 07:34:56 AM
nobody is going to Pardon him .. it would be political suicide. He has more chance of being abducted by aliens from the prison yard ..

Well with the exception that someday in the future they perform a Colombia and start legalizing all sorts of drugs and switch to a regulated model, not that I expect to see that happen for a few more decades.
352  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is there any genuine cloud mining company on: June 26, 2015, 07:25:00 AM
bit-x or cex are valid, problem is, that even they are legit, you will never ROI. If you want to have some BTC, just buy them directly instead of this "cloud mining" ideas..

As Xialla said you make a higher ROI buying Bitcoins from the market than with cloud mining, that said hash is stable at present so if your not into buying coins a reasonable alternative could be a bitcoin miner given time and present difficulty patterns.
353  Economy / Economics / Re: 62% of New Millionaires come from Asia on: June 24, 2015, 08:26:36 AM
It's already occured to an extent as there are more Chinese Millionaires now than any other country than the USA.
http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2014/06/10/china-now-has-more-millionaires-than-any-country-but-the-u-s/

Millionaires are on track to "control nearly half" the world's private wealth by 2016.
But while we are seeing more millionaires, the gap between millionaires and billionaires is widening. So even if you're a millionaire, there's reason to think that you're falling behind.
http://www.businessinsider.com/the-us-has-the-most-millionaires-but-china-is-making-millionaires-faster-2015-6#ixzz3dxxGRVvw

If this was a video game it would be congrats you powered up to the millionaire level, unfortunately your only just getting started, Business Tycoon.
354  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brothel Offers Free Sex To Protest High Taxes on: June 24, 2015, 08:16:30 AM
That was an interesting article, well in this case I would be more worried of if it sounds too good to be true it probally is but someones going to have to try it.
That said STD Tests may be required if theres a long line.
On the other hand the owner just created a lot of goodwill and will get likely recieve a significant uptick in revenue after the summer ends and their is less things to do in Austria, by attracting a lot more clientelle.
355  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: You have $1,000,000 USD to set up a mining operation. What hardware? Why? on: June 24, 2015, 08:05:26 AM
You don't, you invest in one of the manufacturers. Or you hire someone to do the research instead of asking strangers on a forum.

Agree, as long as I know the manufacturer is reliable and they have operations with a low electrical cost and strong hashing capability, it would make sense to just piggy back on their stuff.
356  Economy / Speculation / Re: Amazon is going to accept bitcoin in the near future on: June 24, 2015, 08:02:18 AM
If Amazon starts accepting BitCoins eBay would follow suit.
I can't even imagine how hight BTC would skyrocket if they accepted BTC as payment

Unless they offer a discount i dont think it will rise.  There is no incentive to buy bitcoin from a exchange and spend it at amazon.  Its a extra step and people already got there credit cards filed with amazon.

not only that but amazon will dump it as a fast as possible, so the price will not rise much because of this too, like it happened when newegg and dell and microsoft accepted it, there was a dump actually at first...

but you can except a slow rise if they will accept bitcoin along with ebay

Yep, a nice price drop as coins are dumped into the market due to strong sell pressure from all the conversions but then over time a gradual growth in the userbase and number of people who retain their Bitcoins for longer durations resulting in a price increase.

That said who knows a year is a while in the tech sector they might be more interested in it after observing how it operates for a year, but while we wait there are still a lot of other places to get goods.
357  Economy / Economics / Re: Please tell me if we have more stability because of shorting on: June 24, 2015, 07:53:30 AM
No.

There's no options exchange to short bitcoin. (If anyone knows of one, correct me.)

And buying bitcoin on margin is just buying it on loan. The loan needs to be covered at somepoint but there's no requirement that it be covered by buying bitcoin, it could be covered with fiat.

FXopen allows you to Short bitcoin but not to leverage if I recall correctly
As for the main thread question it can stabalize the price if Short positions get squeezed out
On the inverse it could cause a market shift to occur faster if their are people who predict a price drop and switch to shorts over longs.
358  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Use In Philippines on: June 24, 2015, 07:33:45 AM
School tuitions in some universities can be paid by bitcoin now here in Philipines. I don't know if it's already implemented a long time ago. Just saw it while browsing in my online wallet provider.

woow that was awesome i imagine that i could paid my school tutions with bitcoin to,by the way i was curious about the unevrsity which you said maybe if you find the link please share here and let us know thanks Cheesy

Its one of the services that coins.ph have. If you have a wallet there you can see all of their awesome services. As of now only few universities are in their list but it's a big step and hoping for more universities here will adapt that.

This is cool, it must have flown under the radar since I was not aware that their were Universitites in the Phillipines that accepted Bitcoins.
I can't see the list since it requires a log in but I am a bit curious what Universities are listed there.

Yeah it requires login to see the list. As of now , these are the Universities in their list :

- Ateneo De Manila
- La Salle Greenhills
- Miriam College
- San Juan University - Recoletos

All are big names. Smiley

Thanks for the list a few more big names like UP (UPAN) would be cool but hopefully it will grow larger over time to cover all of them even if it is just through conversions at present it might get the universites to go who is paying all these tuitions and open a door.
ICU ranking system not bad #1,#2

The quoted universities do not accept bitcoin directly. You send your bitcoin to coins.ph, they convert it to PHP, and then coins.ph pay the university on your behalf.

Next week, when I have time, I'm going to see if I can get my local sari sari to start accepting bitcoin. Should be an interesting exercise.

Best of luck with it, having a lot of sari sari stores taking Bitcoin would be interesting.

359  Other / Off-topic / Re: LastPass Hacked on: June 24, 2015, 07:20:42 AM
The last password you will ever need as its the golden goose for all the accounts once hacked into and a persons Achilles Heel.
That said remembering a lot of unique sets of passwords is complicated so it does seem like an inevitable outcome, but like Bitcoin wallets best to keep passwords offline.
360  Economy / Economics / Re: Euro's not fungible on: June 23, 2015, 09:05:57 AM
I'm not well versed in Euro's as it's not my main currency of use.
That said thanks for the tidbit of info there if you want a Euro make sure to check which marking it uses although as mentioned they both are valid units of currency.

(For fun it would be cool to have a bunch of Greek labelled Euros and then sell them for Bitcoin in the future if they lose their recognized value)
As a joke of sorts
