341  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Sparrow vs Electrum for desktop on: February 04, 2024, 07:18:34 PM
Don't tell me that you figured out how to spend to multiple addresses in Electrum but you failed to do that in Sparrow wallet because I found it hard to do that in Electrum and also I remember that you liked the UI and UX of Sparrow.
P.S. Thanks to @satscraper for explanation but I'll leave the images down below for those who might have the same question and need a graphical guidance.

I didn't search a lot. I don't have access to my computer since the beginning of the year and I thought about asking it here.

I have never used this option with Sparrow.

Nevermind, I have found it thanks to the previous answer.

The problem with OP_RETURN still remains with Sparrow though.
342  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Sparrow vs Electrum for desktop on: February 03, 2024, 12:57:45 PM
Has anyone ever paid multiple addresses at once using Sparrow? I know batch payments are a thing in electrum, but is there the same capability in Sparrow? Thanks
343  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to connect a hardware wallet directly to Bitcoin Core? on: February 03, 2024, 09:19:51 AM
Bitcoin Core can connect to a compatible hardware wallet directly, but I don't know how.

I want to connect to Trezor, Bitbox and Ledger.

I seriously doubt this is possible. As hugeblack said, the best way to do it is using Sparrow, because it is the (only ?) wallet, as far as I know, that allows you to connect straight to Core, without using an Electrum Server.

Where have you heard / read that you can connect hardware wallets directly to Bitcoin Core?
344  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 02, 2024, 07:11:53 PM
No, but I was thinking of testing small amount to see how it works with my Aqua wallet.
I would send any supported coin and receive liquid network L-BTC in my wallet but over lightning invoice.

Alright, feel free to share the experience. Btw, you gave me some homework right now. I think I test this Aqua wallet. I have never heard of it.

I would love to see exchange with better rates, but maybe you could try with Bisq exchange.
There are rumors about more BTC-XMR decentralized exchanges coming soon.

Personally I haven't found much better rates using Bisq, unless I wanted to wait for a week or so. But normally I pay something like 4-5% on each trade with Bisq.

Rumors ? Hmmm... I am curious to know about these rumors.
345  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why is bip 39 a very much reoccurring word in Bitcoin on: February 02, 2024, 04:36:13 PM
Bitcoin consists of key-pairs (private - public).

BIP39 provides a way to deterministically produce the same pairs of keys by using the same set of 12 words.

So, it essentially offers an easy-to-read and easy-to-maintain backup solution for your keys. You only have to make sure you backup the 12 words (offline) and you will always have access to your keys. The keys are important because they allow you to spend the coins you have.

I don't like quoting myself, but I don't want to copy paste. This is how BIP39 works technically-wise:

Let's examine how BIP39 works.

So, your device generates 128 bits of entropy (assuming you want 12 words seed phrase). Then the entropy looks like this:

Code:
10001001011110001...001

Then the entropy is hashed with SHA256. From the output, you will hold only the first 4 bits.

So now you have 128 bits of entropy + 4 bits that are called "checksum".

We will split these 132 bits into 12 segments of 11-bits each.

Imagine something like:

Code:
10001001011
11000100100
...
01000100001

Now we will convert those binaries to decimals:

Code:
1099
1572
...
545

Let's go to the BIP39 wordlist and check where these numbers correspond to:

Code:
matter
settle
...
dune

Yea, this is true, as I have also noticed that over the little time I've been here, if you are chasing the merit, you can only end up not getting it, or even if you get it, it can't exceed a certain limit as the tactics you might be using might end up failing you, but when you are being your self-learning and contributing positively in the little ways you can, you can just see the merits coming even when you less expect them. I was given advice when I was coming up on the forum by one member whom I respect so much. The statement was, "Don't chase merit; allow merit to chase you."

Exactly. The people to whom I send merits, don't ask for it. They just deserve it, because they are good and helpful. They teach me and I show my gratitude. That's how it works.

Hahaha luxurious problems Grin .
you are a nice programmer apogio and definitely deserve the rank. Hmmm I guess i will do like you are aiming 😁 I will try getting to hero member merit before I get to senior member.

Thanks for the kind words. My point is, I am programming, because I like it. I do it here, so I can educate people and be educated by much better programmers than me. I always post "asking" for improvements from other members.

By the way, I only said that, about the rank, because it feels like a challenge, you know, trying to reach the necessary merit and then patiently wait for the time to pass. But as I said, there is no need to hunt merit, it will lead to the exact opposite outcome.
347  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Just a quick question on: February 02, 2024, 09:24:07 AM
I have tried both. Essentially they both install Bitcoin Core, Electrs, Block Explorer and LND.

For me the main differences (the most important ones) are:

1. StartOS (embassy) includes more tools like Monero node, CLN (and plugins over CLN) etc

2. StartOS runs over TOR easily, while in mynode you need to pay the "premium" package to access the node through TOR, at least  that was the case 1 year ago.

3. StartOS is easier to debug in my opinion. As such, it is better for technically savvy users.

They both work well, but I would go with StartOS if I had to keep only one. At the moment I run my own node from scratch, but if I wanted to use a ready-to-go node implementation I would use StartOS.
348  Other / Meta / Re: [SAD] activity on: February 02, 2024, 09:07:07 AM
Indeed, it's more fun when you see your merit higher than your rank. You now seem to wait for activities because others seem to be looking for merit to qualify them for the next rank, and from your merit history and the way you are going, it's certain for you to earn that legendary rank merit and even more before that time.

I guess I will be seeing my Hero member rank anytime soon, as my activities are scheduled to be updated next Wednesday, and I will then be left with a new challenge to get the required merit for legendary before that time comes.

Thanks and good luck to you too. By the way, I think merit hunting usually turns out to be a disaster most of the time. All the people I "know" who have high merits usually don't try too much for it. Most of the people I respect in this forum have earned merits without any effort, just by being polite, to-the-point, knowledgeable and good at explaining what they want to say.
349  Other / Meta / Re: [SAD] activity on: February 02, 2024, 08:31:56 AM
Anyway, in addition to echoing everyone's "be patient!" comments I'd add that OP and Nwada001 are fortunate to have enough merits stacked up such that they'll reach their next rank just by gaining activity points.  It could be a hell of a lot worse, and it is for a lot of members who have a hard time making posts good enough to earn merits.  So I'd say you've both got luxury problems, so to speak.  Just wait until you're eligible to get Legendary rank.  It's a crapshoot as to what activity count you'll actually achieve it, and if you're impatient now just check back when you're a Hero with 1000 merits or more and you've hit the minimum activity for Legendary.  Every week you'll be pulling your hair out.  Lol.

This is indeed the most important thing. I am also waiting to become Hero Member, since I have already gathered the merits needed. But, meanwhile, I have decided to challenge myself to get the merits needed for Legendary rank, before I become Hero member. Just for fun  Tongue
350  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 02, 2024, 07:41:25 AM
Has anyone tried LN swaps on exch?

I have only tried BTC-XMR swaps, but I was wondering about switching from BTC to LN, since currently I had some issues with my "primary" CLN node and I want to get a small amount on my "secondary" semi-custodial wallet.
351  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] eXch.cx - Automatic Exchange | Sig Campaign | Up to $120/W on: February 01, 2024, 04:43:02 PM
Friends, the campaign has resumed, please update your signatures as soon as possible.

I will also take into account all the messages made this week / Once again, sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thanks for all the effort mate. Updating the signature now. Could you change my address to: bc1qg5fv5r86kzy4mkyfpr5srstf0ue8cp89q528sj

Thanks again.
352  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] eXch.cx - Automatic Exchange | Sig Campaign | Up to $120/W on: February 01, 2024, 01:10:25 PM
At least the representative on X / Twitter has posted something last Sunday (don't know if this was before or after the communication about the campaign stopped). I also still hope the situation could normalize, even if the campaign ends it would be nice to hear that there's everything ok with the exchange, as I really like to use it.

We can only guess, and that often leads to wrong conclusions.
As far as I can see in the exch ANN thread, some of the members have confirmed successful exchanges on their platform these days, so it seems (at least to me) that there are no operational problems here. Pausing a signature campaign is certainly not it.

Yeap, no problem with the service. I used it yesterday and it worked smoothly as always
353  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 01, 2024, 11:40:51 AM
Yeah I only use eXch, but I only use the service for my "liquidities". For example the BTC I earn here, or when someone pays me with altcoin; I always swap them to XMR first, no matter if I want to keep BTC.

You're right, I should probably use some other services, but I haven't found a better one for now. I am not worried about it, as I use Tor, internet data not under my name, and I believe eXch when they say they don't keep logs.

I don't think there is a better one, but there are alternatives like Bisq. I mainly use these 2 options.

On the other hand, for the BTC I HODL for the long term (I mean for my old days), I don't want them to be linked to any online service/exchange. I prefer only hodl what I am mining myself. Who knows, maybe X or Y service could be categorized "non-compliant" in the future and some coins could be tainted (scenario easy to imagine with USDT/USDC for example). I am probably over-paranoid, but I have the feeling that the futures regulations in general will give a disadvantage for people using some privacy-friendly services today or in the past.

Perhaps one day our intrusive gov friends will realize that some naughty Asians dressed in green and red suits are using X or Y service to exchange funds, and that BTC accumulated by said service would become as rotten as those held by a certain forum campaign manager following recent events? I don't hope so, but it's possible.

Since you are mining, this is a great option. So essentially your retirement funds are BTC that you have mined yourself. And you exchange every other BTC you own to XMR? That's cool.

However it is highly unlikely that coins derived from exchanges will be banned. As long as there are miners and nodes who are willing to validate such transactions, we are ok. It all depends on how "deep" chain analysis will go and how much the authorities will be able to control echanges and companies who receive BTC as payment.
354  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 01, 2024, 10:35:13 AM
Personally I understand why people trade BTC for XMR, as since last year I'm one of those who reduce continuously their BTC bag and increase their XMR one over time.

I am doing that too... I have also upgraded my wallet security, generating my wallet and signing TXs offline.

However I will maintain most of my stash in BTC.

Are you only using EXCH? Because I believe we should use multiple tools for privacy reasons. Am I wrong?
355  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Check BTC balance programmatically on: February 01, 2024, 09:09:58 AM
How do you know if these addresses are produced by a "brain" key or not?
I don't know, but it doesn't matter. If someone creates his own private key instead of using a proper random generator, he should know his funds can be stolen at any time.

Haha we re saying the same thing. Of course his funds can be stolen. But stealing them is not right. That's what I am saying. Anyway, I think we agree on everything.
356  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Check BTC balance programmatically on: February 01, 2024, 08:44:45 AM
Trying to do something is not the same as actually stealing. I'm not worried about
It's a different story when checking brainwallets: there's actually a chance to find funded ones. You can bet many people are trying to "hack" them.

Of course checking is not stealing. Only spending is stealing.

How do you know if these addresses are produced by a "brain" key or not?  Tongue Or a dictionary perhaps
357  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Check BTC balance programmatically on: February 01, 2024, 07:56:43 AM
Let me just say something. Not for OP, but for a friend  Tongue

If someone had 200+ million addresses:

1. trying to find if these addresses have a balance and spending from them is considered stealing. Of course it's impossible unless he they had 200+ million key-pairs instead of 200+ million addresses.

2. finding a match between these 200+ million addresses (if they are not known to be funded and are completely randomly generated) and the addresses from the "List of all bitcoin addresses with a balance" is not as easy as it seems. The address space is huge. The addresses are produced using RIPEMD160, so the number that is produced is 160 bits long. This gives a space of 2^160 ~= 1.46 * 10 ^ 48. Your number is 200M = 2 * 10 ^ 8. I think you get the point.

3. trying to trace these addresses is considered at least unethical.
358  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Sparrow vs Electrum for desktop on: February 01, 2024, 07:31:41 AM
Has anyone installed the Sparrow wallet with the Tails operating system yet? I know Sparrow are working in other Linux distros like Redhat/Ubuntu/Debian and CentOS, so it should also work with Tails (Persistent volume enabled)

Tails does work on Electrum and even came with it as a default crypto wallet in some versions of it.

I get "permission" problems when I try to use Sparrow with Tails.

Hi. Can you be more specific on where you get these permission issues?

Also, have you configured the "persistent storage"? Have you rebooted after enabling the persistent storage?
359  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] eXch.cx - Automatic Exchange | Sig Campaign on: January 31, 2024, 07:25:41 AM
I must inform you that I have not received a response, so you can delete your signatures.

I always do everything possible so that when such situations arise, my campaign participants feel as comfortable as possible. But at the moment my options are limited to continue paying from my own funds. And unfortunately, I will not be able to transfer you to other campaigns since they are full (if I find several slots you will receive PM). It was a pleasure working with all of you and I think you guys are some of the best posters here on the forum.

Thank you icopress.

Hi all.

I just added Nested Segwit addresses.

I also changed the output files to:

1. keys.gpg: encrypted keys directory
2. addresses.txt: file that includes P2PKH and P2SH addresses in text format.
3. segwit_address.png: QR code for the segwit address.
4. legacy_address.png: QR code for the legacy address.
