I do not think that there was another real option for cyprus. The whole bank system in cyprus would crash and then all the money would be lost. Now are "only" 9.9% affected.
Cyprus cannot just print more money so what else should they do?
Um, let's see. Stop spending so much money? Cut extravagant social programs they could never have afforded anyway?

I have to admit that when I read OP's post my first thought was it was something from Alex Jones/prisonplanet.
The story seems legit.

I noticed eligius isn't listed as being "ASIC ready". I was under the impression it was.

I've been experimenting with LTC mining lately with cgminer. I found some settings that worked best with my little GPU and noticed some changes in changing from 2.11.2 to 2.11.3. I had found with 2.11.2 that I got best performance with "-g 3" but with 2.11.3 it was best with "-g 1". Also, my peak performance has improved slightly from 138 kh/s to 141 kh/s between the 2 most recent versions.

When I first saw the name I mentally pronounced it "bitch at"

I just started tinkering with LTC mining last night with me 6770 and cgminer.
Man, it's like learning to crawl all over again.
That's half the fun though, tweaking your cards to get the highest rate, at the best power consumption, it's like starting the BTC train all over like you said. It seems like the only way to achieve a high hash rate is with very high intensities, like around 18. I normally mine BTC with my 6770 with intensities around 4-6 which give a good hash rate but leave the PC usable for other things. But 18 makes the PC unusable for anything besides LTC mining.

Heh, I gotta Trojan for Courtney right here.

I'm fixing to move back to p2pool but I want to clarify something. Do I have to downgrade my bitcoin client to 0.7.2 from 0.8.0 before mining? Or is it all sorted now and I can stay with 0.8.0?

eclipsemc.com is down and so is butterflylabs.com

We need some of these big new ASIC rigs that have been making the rounds lately on BTCGuild and eligius to show up at p2pool.
Heck, 1 of them would be nice.

Just wanted to take a second to welcome all of the new miners to the pool! Looks more like 2 more more very, very large miners.
|
|
|
Just to allay my and others' fears: what version bitcoind are you using? Has the chain fork affected eligius?
|
|
|
Something funny going on with the pool's web site. The charts and tables are all empty.

I'm continuing to observe the BitMessage client occasionally use 100% cpu without my doing anything. I left it running overnight and woke up to find it like this. In fact it was unresponsive and had to be killed using process explorer.
This is the latest version 0.2.6.

can you remember the smell of paper tape?
I remember handing stacks of IBM punch cards through a window to a computer operator in the inner sanctum. Each card contained one line of Fortran IV source code. Software wasn't for woosies back then.

Hi Atheros, I've left my client running for almost 24 hours now and I noticed that sometimes it uses 100% CPU without my doing anything. I had seen this when I send a message which makes sense but why would it do heavy CPU while idling?

I have tested this. Aluminum just is not effective.
Personal opinion might differ, but extensive Tests in our Lab have clearly proven that Aluminium increases protective abilities, by reducing weight at the same time, compared to Tin. Is that your new ion deposition process?

How about a tin foil Guy Fawkes mask?

Hey Atheros, I noticed that when I send a message the CPU maxes to 100% for about 2.5 minutes. I assume this is the lengthy ECC crypto algorithm running. Surely this could be offloaded to a GPU using OpenCL (Hint hint)
Also I noticed that it's rather hit-or-miss if I fully connect to the network. I've correctly forwarded port 8444 but sometimes I never get the green light (stays at yellow). If I restart I get the green light right away.
