Google's new holding company drops 'Don't Be Evil'
Technically Incorrect: Alphabet decides to lose Google's most famous line, perhaps finding it a touch outdated.

When you were little, your mom told you not to be a bad boy.

But when you grew up, you knew you were going to be bad sometimes. What you had to hope is that when it mattered you'd at least do the right thing. Or at least know what that was.

This seems to have been the logic involved when writing the code of conduct for Google's new holding company, Alphabet.

Alphabet had its official launch yesterday and with it came a new code of behavior. It reads: "Employees of Alphabet and its subsidiaries and controlled affiliates should do the right thing -- follow the law, act honorably, and treat each other with respect."

One person's honor is another person's sneaky path to profit. Who will define what is honorable? Google didn't respond to a request for comment.

The code goes on to say that if someone accuses you (or someone else) of wrong or dishonorable behavior, you must still follow the code of conduct: "Never retaliate against anyone who reports or participates in an investigation of a possible violation of the Code."

This language of course omits the most famous line in Google's diabolically famous code of conduct, the opener "Don't Be Evil."

The sentences that come after that opener, however, are very similar to Alphabet's. They read: "But 'Don't be evil' is much more than that. Yes, it's about providing our users unbiased access to information, focusing on their needs and giving them the best products and services that we can. But it's also about doing the right thing more generally -- following the law, acting honorably and treating each other with respect."

So there we have it. Honorable behavior has been part of Google's rules for a long time.

Over the years, though, as the company has been caught in one slightly evil-looking act or another -- for example, the scraping of Wi-Fi data from unsuspecting citizens by its Street View cars -- the "Don't Be Evil" mantra has felt at best naive and at worst downright cynical.

Steve Jobs was once said to have observed: "This 'don't be evil' mantra: It's bull****."

Even Google seems to have become uncomfortable with it over the years. In 2014, Larry Page mused that the company's whole mission statement needs something of a polish.

Still, even in removing "Don't Be Evil," Alphabet -- which incorporates some of the most far-reaching Google projects, such as self-driving cars -- has a mission that isn't merely technological. It's socio-political. The company doesn't want simply to change how people behave. It wants to change how human brains operate.

Witness Google's director of engineering, Ray Kurzweil, declaring that once you have a little robot in your brain, you'll be "godlike."

Ultimately, whether it's "Do the Right Thing" or "Don't Be Evil," there's a fundamental belief at Google that the company is the moral arbiter of what a just future should look like.

Making people happy just isn't enough.

The Hippocratic Oath is an oath historically taken by physicians. It is one of the most widely known of Greek medical texts. In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear, by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards. Of historic and traditional value, the oath is considered a rite of passage for practitioners of medicine in many countries, although nowadays various modernized versions are often used.

Trump: The Problem Isn’t Guns

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday morning that the U.S. cities with the strongest gun laws often have the biggest problems, saying gun violence will happen “no matter what you do.”

“You take Chicago, you take Baltimore, you take various other places where you have tremendous gun violence and death,” Trump said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The strictest laws in the United States– in the world– for guns happens to be Chicago where they have a lot of problems. Baltimore, a lot of the places where you have the biggest problem is where they have the strongest laws.”

“I don’t think it’s about laws,” Trump said during a gun control discussion in the wake of a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore. that left nine people dead.

“The strongest, the most stringent laws are in almost every case the worse places. It doesn’t seem to work. It’s a tough situation,” Trump added. “And when it comes to the schools, it really is mental health. It’s a mental problem.”

I am so happy that these UT students have found a solution to the problem that happened to them before.  With their "Gun Free Zone" it will obviously never happen again because people like Whitman will see the Gun Free Zone Signs and go somewhere else.

In the early morning hours of August 1, 1966, Whitman murdered his wife and mother in their homes. Later that day, he brought a number of guns, including rifles, a shotgun, and handguns, to the campus of the University of Texas at Austin where, over an approximate 90 to 95 minute period, he killed 14 people and wounded 32 others in a mass shooting in and around the Tower. Whitman shot and killed three people inside the university's tower and eleven others after firing at random from the 28th-floor observation deck of the Main Building.

The gun control crowd + sjw = anti 1st Amendment movement. They need to kill the 2nd first, but the 1st is their ultimate goal.

I never seen an interview on msm were Trump was treated humanly (I don't even say kindly).

my favorite potential Potus can be no one but him :

but as his Majesty is pursuing his own path toward happiness, I have no other choice but to think that Mr Trump would be an excellent Potus.

1) He is born and raise in America
2) He believes in THE UNITED STATES AMERICA and THE FLAG THAT IT REPRESENTS
3) I hope he would defend the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE BILL OF RIGHTS
4) He seems to be pragmatic, which means that it's not important what he knows or doesn't, once the data will be available I am sure he will be able to take decisions.
5) if he betrays his oath there will be no riots everywhere (with lootings, rapes, inner cities burning and chaos everywhere)
6) and his hair, omg
7) when I say: Wall Street, he does understand a little more than most of the other candidate.

God bless him and his family, may they be safe.

(they are other very good constitutionalists on the republican side, but congress needs you other wise the plage of the democrap traitors will proliferate).

You can see Trump's money, unlike the banksters. If the economy is bad he loses money, unlike Wall Street which can bet against the dollar and American interests, as the whole world is playing. Trump is no fool and he has investment everywhere, but at the end of day he deals with union workers more often than traders.

Unlike maybe Bloomberg for example.

That is why Wall Street is betting for Bush or Clinton.

Oregon Shooter Made Christians Crawl, Shot Girl After Making Her Beg For Her Life

The Oregon shooter who killed nine and injured nine ordered a girl to beg for her life before shooting her anyway, a survivor recalls.

Chris Harper-Mercer prefaced his murderous rampage by handing an envelope to one boy, told him to stand in the corner and said ‘you’re the lucky one’.

However, his mercy extended no further.

In a chilling account from 18-year-old survivor Lacey Scroggins, Harper-Mercer turned to one girl and said he would spare her if she begged for her life. As she pleaded, he shot her.

The 26-year-old killer also ordered his Christian classmates to crawl into the middle of the room to be shot dead, Scroggins’ father, Pastor Randy Scroggins, revealed.

Oregon congregants forgive the killer who targeted Christians

[...]
Two days earlier, the pastor had counseled families of the victims, and one day earlier, he had prayed with survivors as they rode on a school bus to retrieve their belongings from the crime scene. Now it was Saturday morning, time to lead his church, and pastor Lonnie Wibberding stepped in front of his small congregation and bowed his head.

“We now know that this was an attack on all of us here,” he said…

“Prayer is what we need,” one congregant said, quoting from a text message she had just received from the mother of a shooting victim.

“I want to pray for all people who hate Christians,” another congregant said.

[...]
Moore had been a member of an Adventist congregation for most of her life. Her faith had helped to sustain her through several divorces and a recent health crisis, friends said. Now those same friends wondered whether her faith had also played a role in her death.

“Those people who stood up, they are the bravest people in the world,” said Sonia Gagliano, a congregant who had left her Writing 121 class at Umpqua moments before the shooting began. “I hope I would have stood up. I hope we can all stand up now.”

Locomotive Acts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Locomotive Acts (or Red Flag Acts) were a series of Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom regulating the use of mechanically propelled vehicles on British public highways during the latter part of the 19th century.

The first three, The Locomotives on Highways Act 1861, The Locomotive Act 1865 and the Highways and Locomotives (Amendment) Act 1878 contained restrictive measures on the manning and speed of operation of road vehicles; they also formalised many important road concepts such as vehicle registration, registration plates, speed limits, maximum vehicle weight over structures such as bridges, and the organisation of highway authorities.

The most draconic restrictions and speed limits were imposed by the 1865 act (the "Red Flag Act") which required all road locomotives, which included automobiles, to travel at a maximum of 4 mph (6.4 km/h) in the country and 2 mph (3.2 km/h) in the city - as well as requiring a man carrying a red flag to walk in front of road vehicles hauling multiple wagons.

The 1896 Act removed some restrictions of the 1865 act and raised the speed to 14 mph (23 km/h).

The "Locomotives on Highways Act 1896" provided legislation that allowed the automotive industry in the United Kingdom to develop soon after the development of the first practical automobile (see History of the automobile). The last "locomotive act" was the "Locomotives Act 1898".

Hillary Clinton’s legal adviser warns her — Time to lawyer up

One of the Clintons’ oldest and most trusted legal advisers has urged Hillary to hire a criminal defense attorney to represent her in case she’s indicted for mishandling classified documents on her private e-mail server and for lying under oath.

The adviser, who has been a Clinton confidant for more than 30 years, laid out his concerns about Hillary’s legal exposure in a wide-ranging interview.

“This e-mail thing is spiraling out of control,” he said. “To paraphrase John Dean of Watergate fame, it’s a cancer on her candidacy.

“Frankly,” he continued, “I am used to my advice on legal matters being taken very seriously and acted upon by the Clintons. I’ve told them repeatedly that this FBI e-mail investigation could go in a very dangerous direction very quickly.

“I think Bill takes the matter seriously. But Hillary is still acting as though it’s a political smear job by right-wing zealots.”

In separate phone conversations with Bill and Hillary, the adviser said he warned them that Justice Department prosecutors handling Hillary’s case expect the FBI probe to wrap up much sooner than expected — maybe as soon as the end of this year.

Another completely inaccurate thing said as if it were fact by people very eager to politicize this tragedy. This is why you wait a day or two, for all the information to come out. That way, you're not helping propagate inaccurate data, at best, lies at worst.

PS: I don't see how White supremacist is only for pure-blooded white people. People of all backgrounds can have bigoted views. Of course, a black man being a white supremacist is like a slave that agrees with slavery, but I guess they exist. Also, based on the tone of his skin (photo found on google), I would guess he would be more likely to hold white supremacist views than someone of the skin tone of say... Obama.

Yeah, great thread. It's pretty sick that people want to ban guns, but not anti-psychotropic drugs....

Our holistic doctors are dying like crazy, people are blaming vaccines for multiple side effects, even if people don't believe the conspiracy theories about it, the side effects are quit public. Pushing these things on people without really discussing the consequences leads people to start thinking that the doctors are really in it for the money. If they're in it for the money, they're not in it for the patient.

Don't you mean "the client"?

 Cool

He's been talking about possible solutions, forever now. He seems to take these "address the public" speeches to no longer mourn or inform the public, but rather create political pushes for gun control. After Sandy Hook, it seems nothing will happen anymore.

Just so I can get this straight.

Obama is "black."

This shooter was "half-WHITE."

0bama = mom, white, daddy, black = 100% black

evil insane shooter = mom, black, daddy, white maybe = 100% pure white as snow racist republican killer.
