3441  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: India looking to Re-ban Bitcoin on: September 21, 2020, 03:27:02 AM
~
The supreme court didn't declared that Bitcoin was legal. They declared that the banking ban on Bitcoin was illegal. Some of the analysts claim that this mean that Bitcoin is legal in India. As such, there was no ban imposed on Bitcoin. However, there was a ban on the use of bank accounts, for the purpose of cryptocurrency trading. This ban was overturned by the supreme court of India.
It is a fine line when it comes to the interpretation of the law,  the mobile association approached the Supreme court challenging the ban imposed against institutions by the RBI and the legality of BTCitcoin and the important note i saw in the judgement is that the court reviewed and said that cryptocurrency is capable of being accepted as a valid payment for the purchase of goods and payment services and the RBI should think about regulating it.

The above highlighted is the almost exact quote from the judgement notes which means it is legal in the eyes of the Supreme court. If the government or the RBI come up with a counter point and convince otherwise we might see a different judgement, but as of now this is the situation.

In this case, the Supreme Court has taken a favorable view of the cryptocurrency. But still, the judgement can change as per the government policy. If the government comes up with a law banning the ownership and transaction of cryptocurrency, I don't think that the courts can remove that ban (at the most, they can give suggestions). Last time, the loophole was created because the government was not yet ready with a law regarding cryptocurrency.
3442  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: September 21, 2020, 03:14:25 AM
The result once again shows how close these T20 matches can be. A single misfield or a dropped catch can cost you the match. The so called death bowling specialist (Chris Jordan) went for 28 runs in one over. Kings XI Punjab is still not happy with the short-run call in the 19th over. They claim that they could have won the match without it. I checked the replay, and at the most it was a 50/50 decision. I would rather side with the umpire here.
3443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Judge Orders Bitfinex to Turn Over Tether Loan Documents (Again) on: September 21, 2020, 03:04:26 AM
If Tether is accused of cheating again, this could be a shock, the market could be hit hard by bad news like this one. Tether they have printed too much USDT at a rate of 1 billion dollars a month in the last 5 months. Assuming they used USDT to buy altcoins and bitcoins at a good price and now they want to sell them to use the money to prove their liquidity, it is a disaster.

Correct. A few months back, the market cap of Tether used to be in the 4.0-4.5 billion USD range. When I checked yesterday, this had increased to $15.2 billion. Tether is creating money out of thin air, just like Ben Bernanke did during the Obama presidency, when he was the Chair of the Federal Reserve. Tether is just like fiat currencies such as USD or UKP.... I would even say that Tether is even worse when compared to them. At least in the case of USD, the Federal Reserve has some limitations on the amount of banknotes that they can print. Tether doesn't have any such restrictions.
3444  Economy / Speculation / Re: COVID-19 Vaccine Will Cause Bitcoin Crash on: September 20, 2020, 04:43:32 PM
There may be a correction in the stock market, because many of the shares have gone up by as much as 100% during the last 6 months. Gold prices also appreciated by around 40%. But Bitcoin was relatively stable. Compared to the prices 6 months ago, the current rates doesn't show much difference. On the other hand, some of the altcoins went up significantly during this period. So if a correction occurs, it is going to be limited to the alts. Bitcoin on the other hand, looks under-priced. We didn't had a spike after the block reward halving in May.
3445  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: September 20, 2020, 03:36:17 PM
Delhi got the worst possible start to this season. Two overs remain and they are struggling at 113/6. Even if they make 10 runs per over from the remaining three, they may end up with a total of around 133, which is clearly not going to be enough against the KXIP. Mohammed Shami was simply unplayable today, while the other bowlers such as Cottrell and Bishnoi gave him good support.

Hotstar holds the online broadcasting rights for this year, and they had deal with Jio last year so people who had jio app can watch it for free but this time Jio not interest to renew the deal so hotstar holds the sole right of it and no one can officially broadcast.

Facebook pages may illegally broadcast it but soon they will be takedown due to copyrights from the facebook side so need to find new pages for every matches.

I just googled a bit. It looks like Jio still have some plans, where you get free subscription to Hotstar. Check these:

https://www.jio.com/en-in/hotstar-prepaid-plans

For ₹499, you get free subscription to Hostar for the entire IPL season, in addition to free voice calls and 84 GB data. So basically, if you have a Jio connection, then you get Hotstar subscription for free. On the other hand, if you want to subscribe to Hostar without a Jio connection, then a 12-month basic plan can be purchased for ₹399.

Same supreme court that declared that Bitcoin is legal in India the last time? I am just confused as to why a supreme court would declare Bitcoin as legal, and some people will start up the same cases again, it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

3448  Economy / Economics / Re: COVID19 VACCINE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH? on: September 20, 2020, 02:18:27 PM
So, it is certain that with vitamin D we can increase immunity with a balance of eating and exercise rather than waiting for a vaccine that is not clear when it will be mass-produced which only they continue to test without any clarity when it will be finished.
Still, we have to be immune and follow the applicable protocols to avoid Covid-19. I am sure that with the immune system people can survive with makeshift drugs instead of having to wait for vaccines that are not clear and even expensive if there is one.

In my country, this "immunity booster" business has got a big spike. Everywhere, you will notice adverts and testimonials. The sales of multi-vitamin tablets have increased by manifold. Even fruit juices are now advertising, claiming that they contain certain "immunity boosters". Unlike the vaccines, they don't need any clinical trials to support such advertisements.
3449  Economy / Economics / Re: Can legalisation of Cannabis help US economy? on: September 20, 2020, 01:54:40 PM
It will usually depend on the government of the country to get legitimacy if the government supports it but it is better not to give legitimacy it is a kind of drug which will lead our youth to the path of destruction. It will not help the economy to improve but it will bring the economy down a lot without proper connection to the law the country will become a drug that's why i think legalizing cannabis helps the us economy but is a threat to other countries.

"Path of destruction"? Dude, you don't know anything about weed. Almost half of the world's population have consumed weed at some point. Did all of them got their lives destroyed? Weed is increasingly getting legalized all over the world, because the governments have realized that they are no more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. Infact weed as a painkiller is much more effective than all those synthetic painkillers available at the market.
3450  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-07-30] Power plants in Iran can mine Bitcoin on: September 20, 2020, 01:38:03 PM
I guess Iran is having surplus electricity and petroleum, since they can't sell their crude oil as a result of the UN embargoes and sanctions. Most of the financial transactions using fiat cash are monitored by international agencies and therefore it is not easy to indulge in cross-border trade. At this point, Bitcoin will be one of the few options available for the regime, to circumvent the sanctions. But if they use Bitcoin for this purpose, then we can expect the US authorities attempting to prevent that loophole.
3451  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: September 20, 2020, 01:28:09 PM
Disappointed with Hotstar. They used to allow free streaming of cricket matches and now asking for subscription. JioTV is not helping either  Cry

I don't think they had free streaming earlier. When I was in India, sometimes I used to watch their live streams. It was free for the first 5-10 minutes and after that they will ask for subscription. And I don't think that they can legally stream the matches for free. The TV rights were sold for such a huge amount. If they live stream the matches, then it will cause huge losses for the rights holder (Star Sports).
3452  Economy / Economics / Re: Boris is right a second lockdown could cripple UK economy. on: September 20, 2020, 01:15:46 PM
Sweden let economy open and it dont look that bad right now. Yes things can change in upcoming months but it all seems they will be a winners at the end. They will have same % of dead as other countries, just that they had them early while others will have them evenly distributed over year.

Here is a picture of dead after covid-19 in Sweden.

A few months back, many of us were making fun of Sweden. They were having on average more than 100 deaths per day, while the neighboring countries such as Norway and Denmark were reporting deaths in single digits. Sweden was the first country to propose the "herd immunity" theory. This was ridiculed by most of the experts in the beginning. But now from the data it looks as if they were right about it.
3453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: India looking to Re-ban Bitcoin on: September 20, 2020, 01:05:34 PM
Once again, this rumor has been proved false

Every now and then, some of the Bitcoin whales spread this news, in order to crash the Bitcoin exchange rates. However, this time it didn't had any noticeable impact on the prices.

Here is the confirmation:

https://cointelegraph.com/news/fresh-reports-of-indian-crypto-ban-are-clickbait-says-local-source

Quote
Speaking to Cointelegraph, Ashish Singhal, the CEO of cryptocurrency exchange CoinSwitch — which has its major user base in India — pointed toward the list of bills that is subject to discussion during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. He said that as much as one can see from the list, no purported ban on crypto trading is scheduled for discussion.

Let me confirm this once again: No such bill is scheduled for discussion in the Indian parliament.
3454  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: September 20, 2020, 12:55:26 PM
In test format, yup he helps tremendously but don't forget Rahane's match winning inning in South Africa and 3 tons of pujara in 4 games when India retained the border-gavaskar trophy by winning the series 2-1.

In shorter format especially t-20 India has fair amount of young batting talent. Kohli even used to take breaks during t-20 series so not much dependence on Kohli here.

If you are talking about ODI then again look at the performance of last 5 years. Majority of wins came because of Sikhar-Rohit-Virat, not just Kohli ( home + away)

Kohli's impact in ODI and T20 is much smaller than that in test matches. While playing in bowler friendly pitches (such as the WACA or the Kingsmead), you need quality defense skills. Unfortunately, very few of the younger players have such skills, since they spend so much time in the shorter formats. 1-2 decades ago, India had a number of batsmen who were good in this department. The prime example is that of Rahul Dravid. He had the perfect defense skills. However, others such as VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar were also quite skilled in this department.
3455  Economy / Economics / Re: Trump's Economy or Biden’s Economy - which version is better. on: September 20, 2020, 12:42:19 PM
Very true. Why somebody should get taxed more for earned income (selling their labor) than unearned income (capital gains) is beyond me. There's really no rational explanation except that it's a direct subsidy to the rich.

Those who already own capital simply get taxed at a lower rate. Roll Eyes

This is so ridiculous. Capital gains are taxed at a lower rate, because of two reasons:

1. The money that goes in to investment in shares/real estate have been taxed once.
2. The government doesn't compensate for capital losses. Only capital gains are taxed, while capital losses go unreimbursed.

And some people do have an assumption that only the rich go for investment in shares/real estate. Nothing can be farther from the truth. The vast majority of the investors are from the middle-class. If the tax rates are increased, they will simply keep the money in their account and the economy will collapse.
3456  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investing 1$ every day in bitcoin over the last five years on: September 20, 2020, 12:30:16 PM
See, the OP had carefully selected the 5-year period. Why not 6-years? Back in 2015, Bitcoin had reached an all time low of around $180 per coin, after crashing from $1,130 per coin in December 2013. Those who made their investments in 2013 were at a loss of more than 85%. And I personally know a few people who made their investment in 2017 December, when we had the ATH. Even now, those investors are at 45% loss.
3457  Economy / Economics / Re: "Warren Buffett invests $6 billion in Japan's five biggest trading houses" on: September 20, 2020, 12:20:12 PM
Japan is likely to recover much faster, when compared to the other countries. Even now, the unemployment rate in Japan is much lower when compared to the other developed countries such as the United States and European Union. Japan remains the most stable and risk-free market out there for large-scale investors.

It is true that the unemployment rate in Japan is among the lowest in the world (only 2.9%), but it is also a fact that Japan has the highest debt-to-GDP ratio in the world. I would not agree that one such country can be considered "most stable and risk-free market", especially if they do not hold their destiny in their hands, but listen to the advice of others who have brought them into this situation.

But from an investor's perspective, profits can be made even in such a country, if you know where and when to invest.

Regarding the high debt-to-GDP level in Japan, there are two things to consider:

1. Most of the Japanese debt is being held by Japanese citizens. Only a very small fraction is being held by other governments and foreign citizens.
2. The interest rates on Japanese bonds remain one of the lowest in the world. Therefore the annual interest payments doesn't put a lot of burden on the government finances.

In simple words, Japan can have a higher debt to GDP ratio, because they can arrange loans at a very low interest rate and that too from their own citizens.
3458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do scams harm Bitcoin's reputation in the mainstream world? on: September 20, 2020, 12:07:07 PM
From what I have seen during the past 8 years, scams do play a major role in slowing down the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin. There are other factors as well, such as lack of legal clarity, usage in dark markets.etc, but IMO scams remain the number one factor. But is it right to blame Bitcoin for all these scams? Most of the scams occur as a result of greed or stupidity from the part of the investors. It is just like ponzis and pyramid schemes with fiat money. But in those cases no one actually blames fiat for those scams.
3459  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: September 19, 2020, 07:05:38 AM
Do they have to depend upon Steve Smith to win  always ? What is the roles of  other 10 players in the team ?
A team which is dependent on one player can never be successful because that formula of one man show cannot work in cricket. The other batsmen need to develop themselves too so that they could also take their team to the winning stage.

Australia is not an exception. Remember India of 1990s? Back then they were too dependent on Sachin Tendulkar. When he was not playing for India, there was a very high chance of India losing the match. Even the current Indian team is not very different. In overseas conditions, they still depend a lot on Virat Kohli. But this is not a very viable system, and can't continue forever.
3460  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: September 19, 2020, 06:07:31 AM
Also it will not effect the much because there will be only 3 to 4 matches in PSL only and people would watch them as they will decide the winner of this year's PSL. Cricket lovers can watch and follow both PSL and IPL at the same time.  Smiley

If the matches go ahead, then there will be significant viewership in Pakistan. But it will end up as a loss making exercise for the PCB. I would like them to cancel the remaining matches and to concentrate on PSL 2021. Else it will create a logistical nightmare. All the players (especially the overseas players) need to be brought in, quarantined and bubbles need to be set up.
