3481  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: June 03, 2022, 12:13:36 AM
Can't wait to see the Wales vs Ukraine match. It'll be basically the final for the qualifiers, whoever wins gets the spot in the group B.

They play in Cardiff, so Wales will be playing local, but as we just saw with Scotland, the Ukrainians have no issues winning overseas.

My guess is that Ukraine will end up winning this one.
3482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC is scarcer than gold. on: June 02, 2022, 02:51:34 PM
Gold is not really scarce, just look at any graph about production of gold, it's getting more common every day.

Bitcoin on the other hand has a known pattern for creating new blocks....

Tick, Tock, another block!

And these rewards keep getting smaller over time!.
3483  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Quiet [40 dB, 8 THs/500 W] Hotmine Convector Miner. Product Overview on: June 02, 2022, 02:44:40 PM
I think it pays for itself in 24 months if you consider the electric bill as if it where a regular space heater cost.

Something to ponder.

30 months = 900 days x 2.30 usd a day = 1860  so if you need to use a space heater 24/7/365

it pays off in 30 months.  if you need it ˝ the year it takes 60 months.

not counting  diff and coin price.
Heh - not a chance in hell any miner like this would still be making money in 30 months from now.

If your goal is to just make money, then there's plenty of altcoins to be mined with way lower difficulty (and payoff) than BTC.

It's a bit altcoin territory but you can always point your miner to cheaper coins that pay less for lower hashes, proportionally...
3484  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: June 02, 2022, 03:34:58 AM
Never expected such a result from yesterday's match. Lost a few bucks betting for Scotland. Yesterday, it turned out to be a one sided match. The difference is that I was expecting one sided match in which Scotland would win, but the other side won in a lop-sided manner. Got the calculations completely wrong this time. Anyway, Ukraine needs to win one more match, in order to qualify for the world cup finals. And I am sure that Wales will turn out to be a stronger opponent when compared to Scotland.

I had my doubts about Ukraine's players, but they showed that they're here to advance as much as they can. It will be a very fun game to watch against Wales, but ultimately I think Ukraine will win.

And looking into the future, if Ukraine does win, they will be joining England, United States, and Iran in the group B. That's going to be a very political group!
3485  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: June 02, 2022, 02:29:18 AM
For me, I think England has a high probability of winning it as long as their defence dosent crumble like it did aganist Italy in the Euro final.

I'm not even sure England will be able to qualify to the next stage to be honest. It's on group B with United States, Iran, and depending on the next match, Wales or Ukraine.

My guess is that Ukraine will end up qualifying, and also going to the next stage. That would leave another direct spot which I think the US might get.

It will be definitely interesting to watch though, but I wouldn't say it's a given that England even goes to the second stage at this time...
3486  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Technical reasons to not solo mine to an exchange address on: June 02, 2022, 02:04:26 AM
If it solo mine with a USB stick miner exchange address is not advisable since you don't have full control of your keys and exchanges are regulated then if you are lucky to mine a block with 6.25BTC and received it on exchanges there is a big possibility that your account/wallet will be monitor and possible withdrawal locked.

That is why people always recommend you to use a non-custodial wallet and remember "Not your keys, Not your coins".

However, if you are mining and making a profit daily GPU or ASIC receiving it directly to your exchange is fine I have a Viabtc account and receive it there and transfer it to Coinex exchange and Binance when withdrawing since I don't have free electricity I need them to withdraw and pay for monthly expenses.

That's a very interesting point that I didn't consider, and it makes sense.

Finding a block through "lottery mining" is by definition an extremely unusual event, so an exchange might flag this transaction. They could potentially lock your account and ask questions later.

Even though you're not doing anything wrong, you might potentially lose access to your mined coins.
3487  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Thoughts on burner addresses on: June 01, 2022, 09:39:07 AM
~snip~
But still in my opinion it does not make sense to burn the coins. If they get redistributed to the miners then they would also be lost to the people that "burned" them but are not lost to the network. The other coins that you get for the "burned" coins can't benefit in any way if the coins are not redistributed, since if they get redistributed also you can only buy the same amount of coins.

It makes perfect sense.

People that send their coins there have their reasons. Those coins are lost forever. There's no need to do anything about these coins in Bitcoin.

It's similar to throwing a coin into an unreachable space, it's lost forever.

This reminded me of my favourite burner address: 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE

Here you can read a lot of articles about it: https://allprivatekeys.com/btc/1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE
3488  Bitcoin / Mining / Technical reasons to not solo mine to an exchange address on: June 01, 2022, 08:36:53 AM
I've had this discussion with some people, and I'm not really sure I covered every single possible thing that could go wrong in that scenario, so I'm asking it here.

My view is that solo mining should definitely be done into your own address, because you would have full control of it of course.

I'm now wondering about the technical aspects of it.

Are exchange wallets created somehow differently to, say, using Electrum to receive the mined coins?

Is there any technical reason that would make this a bad idea, or is it only a matter of not having exclusive control of the keys to the address?

Is it possible for the initial transaction to fail for some reason if you use an exchange wallet?, or should it work exactly the same as other wallets?
3489  Economy / Economics / Re: Is it worth buying a crypto with a value of 0.23? on: June 01, 2022, 08:01:36 AM
It is a currency with a very high appreciation ratio, starting at 0.23. In your opinion, is it worth starting with this type of currency?

I think the best way to start is to buy Bitcoin.

It really doesn't matter what price it currently trades at. Bitcoin is an appreciating asset in the long term, so whatever you invest today should be worth more in the long term. That's assuming you believe in the long term appreciation of Bitcoin.

Any other altcoin is basically gambling your money away.

Also, don't be fooled by a cheap price. You can buy fractions of Bitcoin.

Have a look at this chart to give you a better idea of how divisible Bitcoin is:

https://usdsat.com

One Bitcoin is 100 million sats. It's the same Bitcoin, just smaller. Similar to how cents and dollars refer to the same currency, but in different quantities.

Hahaha, yea this is usually/historically true  Grin

I wonder if this is still valid though. This was more like a thing in the 1970s-90s. Now football is so comercialized and the English Premier League is (arguebly) the strongest in Europe. Even if many players there are not English but from different countries, this also shapes and influences the English team. I think it's time that England finally wins some big international title.

Germany on the other hand has had mnay problems since their 2014 win. I don't see them overcome those in the next few years.

2014 Germany was at another level, Mario Götze played an excellent final, but overall the entire team was just so great.

I think Germany in this world cup will showcase some new players, and try something different. But I'm sure it will advance to the second stage at least.

They were the first team to qualify for Qatar 2022 (after the host of course), so that means they're prepared to win the tournament this time again.
3491  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - UEFA Qualifiers on: June 01, 2022, 05:13:39 AM
Everyone here have made their posts explaining how important this match is for Ukraine. I understand how important it is. But do you guys realize how much important it is for the Scotland fans to gain qualification to the FIFA world cup this time? They last played the world cup in 1998. For the last two decades, Scotland has failed to qualify. Now they just need to win two matches, in order to make a remarkable comeback. Personally I want Scotland to win. Their match against Brazil back in 1998 is still fresh in my mind (they lost the match by 1-2, but gave a good fight).

Yeah, I think Scotland does have a slight edge to win this match. They're playing in their land as well, so I reckon Scotland will end up winning a very tight match.

This one I'm predicting will continue to extra time, and maybe penalties. It will be the last match for Ukraine, and I'm sure people at the stadium will cheer for them as well while leaving.
3492  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][POOL] ZERGPOOL.com - Multialgo, autoexchange, 0.5% fee, 250+ coins on: June 01, 2022, 02:38:11 AM
I have noticed on some occasions that the pool stratum difficulty doesn't match the miner.
It seems to only happen for certain algos and certain difficulties.

I'm seeing it right now on lyra2z. The pool is operating at diff 6.2 but he miner says it's 6.
This result in some low difficulty shares when the submitted share diff is between 6 and 6.2.
The rejected shares are mostly noise and don't affect performance.

I have not noticed the pool difficulty being lower than the miner but that would be a silent error
not easilly noticed. This would result in lost performance because the miner would discard shares
that would be accepted by the pool.

Changing stratum difficulty sometimes resolves the issue unless vardiff changes it back.

I had used sd=1 on the command line, stratum responded with 6 but the pool used 6.2.
I tried with sd=6.2 but stratum still responed with 6.

I tried sd=8 and it was accepted, both the stratum response and the pool said 8 as they should.
But vardiff stepped in and lowered the diff and they mismatched again.

You're setting sd=8 correctly, but a lower difficulty, sd=6 fails. That looks to me that is related to the limit the pool has on this number.

Quote from: zergpool.com
sd=
You may want to use it in case of more powerful hardware so your miners bypass low starting difficulty provided by pool with first connection.
Or you may want to use it in case of less modern hardware so your miners get low difficulty job to work on from the start.(minimum start diff can be 20x smaller than default).
Use sd= to set starting difficulty setting for you miner. It will get adjusted during your mining to most appropriate value based on your hardware power.

Notice that the minimum sd has to be 20x less than default. My guess is that sd=6 is lower than this, but 8 is fine.
3493  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official FutureBit Apollo BTC Software/Image and Support thread on: May 31, 2022, 05:18:13 PM
Can anyone tell me if is it possible to take a "Full" version and make it a "Standard" version?

I have the opportunity to purchase another "Full" unit however I already have 2 "Full" units running and really want to use those as controllers to control more standard units.

Is this possible?

TIA.

The main difference between the Full version and the Standard version is one Linux device similar to a Raspberry Pi but more powerful.

The Full and Standard units come with the same BTC Miner. If you buy a full version you can just ignore the Linux device if you want to, and then it would be a Standard unit (hopefully you're getting them cheaper than Standard versions).

On the other hand, you can supply your own Raspberry Pi device and connect to the USB connector of a Standard unit, making it "Full".

Basically it is possible to turn a Full into a Standard, and vice-versa, after you bought it.

Having said that, I'm still getting pool disconnections when the Internet restarts with a Standard unit that doesn't seem to be present in the Full unit, so there's something going on there. Probably because of the USB connection instead of the direct GPIO connection of the Full.

419 Mining sell the fan stand in the last picture. I use it with a 92mm noctua fan on 6x Compac F's. Works a treat.

Yeah, that's a great little stand, I'll probably get it.

419mining open sourced it so you can 3D print it yourself if you prefer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3270261

I fully agree with you. This is not a friendly game, there is a lot at stake here for both teams. So have the odds for Ukraine been lowered? I just checked bwin and it says 2.25/3.1/3.4 which doesn't seem low for Ukraine, but rather high. Also they haven't changed much in the last weeks. I think Scotland is pretty motivated as they probably want to play their "derby" against Wales after Wink
I just hope we'll see an interesting games with some goals and not just a nervous game.

How does it work with the odds for draw here since there cannot be a draw in this match. A winner must be decided. Is the result of only the 90 minutes considered?

This would be a bit strange bet because you could lose the bet even if your team wins in penalties for example.
3496  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Open Source Bitcoin ASIC miner project that uses 2x BM1387 (Antminer S9) on: May 31, 2022, 12:09:02 PM
It's DIY so I'm not expecting it to be particularly fast, but do you have any hashrate figures on these self-built stuff?

I'd be content if it can pump a few hundred GHash/s. It's ASIC tech after all, even USB miners with small chips can output such speeds.

Note that it's still not working properly, but based on the design, it should be able to hash around 130GH/s, which would make it similar to the NewPac USB miners, which also used a dual BM1387 setup for the hashing chips.

I wonder if it's rather simple to update this design to use newer ASICs like the BM1397 like the ones used in the Compac F, or if that would require a completely new design of the board.

Also the new ASICs from Intel should arrive later this year, that could potentially be a winner for DIY ASICs.
3497  Bitcoin / Hardware / Open Source Bitcoin ASIC miner project that uses 2x BM1387 (Antminer S9) on: May 31, 2022, 10:35:36 AM
I found an interesting project about creating your own ASIC using two BM1387 chips. The cool thing about it is that it's all open source: KiCad design files, BoM, software, etc. Basically an Open Hardware project.

Github with sources here: https://github.com/skot/bitaxe

Here's a reddit discussion about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMining/comments/uymwj3/experimental_bm1387_bitcoin_mining_machine

It's not finished yet, but it's something interesting to have a look if you're planning to make your own ASIC miner, or you want to help create an Open Source one.

Also, the person who created this is now looking to make it work with cgminer:

I’ll see if I can get the cgminer modified for the newpac to talk to the bitaxe

This would be great to tinker with, specially with cgminer.
3498  Bitcoin / Mining / What is effort in the context of pools when finding a new block? on: May 31, 2022, 07:31:13 AM
In a pool when you mine a block you usually see the stats about it like for example its height, the difficulty you used to mine it, and so on.

I can understand all these things, but some pools also include a metric called effort, which is a percentage. This number can be anything, even higher than 100%, for example 1726%, or 6%.

What does this metric mean?
3499  Economy / Speculation / Re: Btc price on: May 31, 2022, 06:28:35 AM
Hey any one here btc expert and do you know btc back again minimum 45k or back to below 20k in jun 2022?

This will depend on the individual actions of literally millions, if not billions, of people.

No one can predict the short term price of Bitcoin.

Sure, many will try, and then after the fact you can look back and cherry pick the ones that said what actually happened, but that's not predicting the price.

If you have a longer time preference, it's probable that the purchasing price of Bitcoin will continue to increase, at least because fiat purchasing power will continue to lower over the years with certainty.
3500  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What's stopping companies making an actual space heater bitcoin miner for home? on: May 31, 2022, 04:17:34 AM
Having modded tons of different loud miners into quiet miners that will heat a home no one will buy an expensive space heater miner when they can mod a miner.

Also pcs with two gpus can be quiet. they mine btc indirectly.

Yeah, absolutely right. Most experienced miners would be able to do this by tinkering with the devices themselves. There's no market for it really.

And having a custom built PC for heating/mining could be a great idea as you can also use it when not mining for many other purposes.

For example this enclosure for a PC would be actually perfect, and very similar to the space heater I had in mind:
