3501  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I think this needs its own thread: Controlled Demolition Vs. 9/11 on: September 11, 2012, 10:23:31 PM
I've always found this conspiracy particularly interesting for some reason.  I don't know what to believe, and don't really care anymore at this point.  What happened, happened, and if it truly was a conspiracy, it will someday be revealed.  Evidence points both ways.

I have an interesting hour-and-a-half video from the conspiracy side that I'll upload if anyone cares to watch it.
3502  Economy / Services / Re: Announcing BitcoinAdvertisers.com THE MONEY MAKING MONSTER! on: September 11, 2012, 07:56:12 PM
More importantly, why hasn't someone written up a thread to give him the scammer tag?
3503  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crowd-fund a Bitcoin-centric game (a proposal) on: September 11, 2012, 07:53:37 PM
I only participate in crowd-funding if I have a reward for it (in this case, a free copy of the completed game), and when I see a project already partway to completion, with "something to show for it".  So, if I were to help crowd-fund your endeavor, I'd want to see you complete it partially in your own spare time, then ask for further funding to focus on it full-time and bring it to completion.  Have some screenshots, a basic demo of it, a really detailed design doc, or something of that nature.

So here's my idea:
Multi-player sim city with satoshi's as the base currency, you have to pay to start your city (i.e., fund it with 0.01 BTC or something to get 1,000,000 credits to start building with).  Cities are placed on a world map.  People can view each others cities.  Cities are constantly in motion - in other words, the gameplay doesn't pause just because you exit the game.

Here's where the money-maker for you comes in, and the challenge/reward for the players comes in:
- A base tax is levied over real-world time.  This is a fixed credit tax.  500 credits/day or something.
- A land tax is levied over real-world time.  This is a variable credit tax, dependent upon how much land you use.  5000 credits/sq mile or something.
- The experienced player must attempt to build a city large enough to sustain itself while paying the taxes.  Anything beyond that is icing on the cake, monies that they can actually withdraw if they like.

It should be difficult to successfully create a large, thriving city, but this is the only way that a person would actually be able to "make money" in the game.  Those monies would come from taxes on cities who don't turn a profit.  The difficulty should automatically adjust according to how much money is brought in from failed cities vs how much money is given out from successful cities.

Hmmm, this actually turned into an intriguing idea as I wrote it.  I kind of like it.
3504  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is Bitcoin's tipping point? on: September 11, 2012, 07:24:42 PM
The tipping point is when > 10% of the people of the world know what Bitcoin is, why it is useful, and advocate for its use.

3505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crowd-fund a Bitcoin-centric game (a proposal) on: September 11, 2012, 07:20:11 PM
I apologize in advance for the troll, but I can't help this one:

Nyhm: What do you guys want to see in a Bitcoin-centric game?
People: This.
Nyhm: No, this is not what this is focused on.  But srsly guys, what do you want to see in the game?
People: That.
Nyhm: No, that is not what I want to build.  For real though, what do you want to see in the game?
People: The other thing.
Nyhm: Sorry, I don't think the other thing will fit well into this project.
Nyhm: Ok fine, I'll tell you what I intend to make since you can't read my mind!

Cheesy

But seriously, I applaud you for your efforts, and hope you are able to create something epic.  I myself very much enjoy the economic/tycoon type games, so I am looking forward to what you come up with.
3506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 06:25:02 PM
time to integrate bitcoin into a virtual world as its main currency
I wonder if it would be possible to integrate it directly into Second Life using SL's API?
3507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 06:22:07 PM
People still play SecondLife?
Same question i have...

Anyway we are post stage 7? Then 8 will come: After numerous complaints, Bitcoin passes new financial regulations, banning all gambling, and all interest-bearing accounts. Casinos, game places, and financial services close. Loaning freezes. Economy comes to a standstill, and many businesses and merchants abandon BTC. Things are never really the same since.

No wait, no one can "force" anything.
Exactly.  There may be regulations put in place on 3rd party companies that process transactions (exchanges, payment processors, etc), but that won't stop people from transacting directly with each other, just like people still transact directly with each other with cash.
3508  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 06:17:54 PM
Hah, I did the whole "buy and resell real estate" thing.  I'd look for the cheapest large plots I could find, then subdivide them into the smallest plots possible and sell them just below the going market rate, ensuring a quick sale.  I'd just about double-up every time I did this.  Unfortunately, they changed the sorting on the real estate listings when they introduced leasing (or renting?), which meant that those leased properties always showed up as the lowest price/square meter compared to everything else, making it impossible to find good deals on real estate actually for sale.  It was fun while it lasted, and I made $75 for doing almost nothing.  I wanted to invest in an island and do the same, but it was too large a chunk of money for me to risk at the time.
3509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 04:47:54 PM
Interesting comparison of Bitcoin to Second Life.  One of my favorite aspects of Bitcoin is just watching it.  Watching the services pop up, and either dwindle and die, or experience wild success.  Watching what activities people take place in in a truly free economic environment.  It is extremely fascinating to me.

3511  Economy / Gambling / Re: SealsWithClubs.eu - 10BTC prize for straight flush on: September 11, 2012, 04:51:20 AM
The Drifter 4000 guarantee starts in less than 2 hours. This is that late late night game some people we're asking for. This data will be used for scheduling.

Monday night at 9pm ET is the 10BTC guarantee PLO game (leaderboard points also awarded).

And starting at 11pm ET Monday the first straight flush made at a No Limit Hold'em ring game wins a 10BTC prize, all stakes included. This prize will be won, there is no deadline.
I am glad you are doing this drifter trial!  I attended the 1:00 and 2:00 AM EST tournies, and meant to be there for the 3:00 AM as well, but it just didn't work out that evening.  Regardless, I would greatly appreciate seeing a new permanent tourny set up at one of those times!

The turnout at those times has been reasonable. Probably on a fixed schedule turnout would be a little better assuming a similar guarantee.

I'll plan and announce something soon.
Heck, just start with a guarantee that still makes you money with the numbers you are seeing now, then raise it up later on.  I'd still play even with just a 2 BTC guarantee, and you've had plenty enough players to cover that amount from what I've seen!

New game is up, 3am ET, 3BTC guarantee, 300 to enter. Starts in the coming morning.

Suppose I better report myself as well...

He'll pay out if he loses.  I have the utmost confidence of that.

Though I did turn it around towards the end...

This pretty much plainly says Matthew has no intention of paying out.

In the event that you do not pay up Sunday, I would refuse to fund an organization that is directly involved with you. If you do pay out the $650K+ in bets, I will apologize for misjudging your character, and I"ll be heading to B&N to pick up my first copy of Bitcoin Magazine.
I would refuse to fund an organization that is directly involved with you.

I'm not sure if there are any bitcoin businesses not directly involved with me. Guess you'll be leaving bitcoin then.

I am in the same boat as you Erik... very disappointing.

Thanks for reporting yourself

+SgtSpike to the list.

I lol'd.
3513  Economy / Marketplace / Re: ["WAIT LIST"] BFL SC Order Dates / Ship Dates on: September 11, 2012, 04:49:54 AM
If we believed current orders is a constant then (at time of post)

Just for fun mind:-

5821 orders we know 185 (5821/185=31.4648) times this by total TH ordered so far (31.4648*30.2475=951.731538)

so If it was taken seriously would be just under 952TH. WOW LOL.

so 951.731538*0.1396983916718426=132861722.7048 difficulty  (0.1396983916718426 is difficulty per Mhs)

A 1TH rig would get you 951/1800=0.5283333333333333BTC Per day

Baring in mind all deliveries would have to be instant LOL!

You are assuming that each and every order in the system was actually real and paid for.

I think it would be closer to about 3-5 times what is reported here since every person looking at BFL is most likely aware of this thread.

So, 3 times 30TH = 90TH.   And, that is probably at absolute most, since most orders went in at the beginning (especially for the Mini rigs).
REPORTED Orders have trailed off significantly even though the order numbers have increased.

SHHH! Stop being reasonable - I'd rather have everyone think that we'll be at 900TH in two months and stop ordering more ASICs!
3514  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Announcement] Butterfly Labs on: September 11, 2012, 04:47:21 AM
...
Josh (and others at BFL) have stated multiple times that the Jalepeno will be powered by USB.  I don't know where people keep getting this idea of it having a power plug.  It might be multiple USB ports, but it will NOT have an external power source other than USB.
...
It will - for the coffee warmer - that has been stated ...
(gotta be the most stupid idea I've yet heard of in BTC mining hardware Tongue)

Go order a real ASIC device - not a coffee warmer toy ...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=79637.msg1177543#msg1177543

... again with more details and even support for developers to get real mining software running on it at release time!
(Yeah my name's there also)
Where was it stated that the Jalepeno would require a power plug?  Everything I have seen from BFL has said that it will not.

Also, an FPGA?  You're kidding, right?
You're kidding right?
Read the post - it's Cell ASIC with more details than BFL have given.

That post made me happy for 2 reasons:
1) My name is on it - yep I'm certainly not gonna lie about that
2) Competition. Hopefully we'll get less vaporware posts from now on. Monopoly allows companies to say whatever they like and people have to put up - even if what was said has holes in it. That is hopefully no longer the case.

C'mon, BFL stated back in June the performance figures of their final 'custom ASIC' products.
Does anyone seriously believe they actually quoted those figures in June based on existing hardware? Anyone?
They quoted their FPGA figures based on a simulation which they got wrong (yeah blame me for pointing out the proof of that in an accidental comment by a BFL person ...)
I don't suspect they will make that mistake again, but I guess we'll see ... if they deliver ...
Pity everyone's gonna have to mine with EasyMiner ... I've not heard anything about mining software on the BFL device.
But I've certainly now heard about it on Tom's device Smiley
My apologies - I DID skim over the post too fast and missed the cASIC reference.  I noted the thread title as having to do with an FPGA.

Yes, I have heard of cASIC already though!  And I too am excited that there will be competition (more excited if they aren't delivered before the BFL units are though).  Not sure why the Jalepeno can't be considered a "real ASIC" though.

I really don't care if BFL quoted specs from simulations (which, I agree, I am sure they did).  They are purposefully holding back on power draw until they can be certain of what it is, so they do not make the same mistake as last time.  And for me, as long as the specs are at least as close as they were for the first-gen units (which was 4 times the power consumption and 20% less hashing power), I'll be happy.  More importantly, if they ship out before anyone else's ASICs ship out, I'll be extremely happy.  Anything more is icing on the cake.

Bitminter has already stated multiple times that they will have support for BFL's new miners by the time they ship.  That's good enough for me.
3515  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 11, 2012, 04:33:20 AM
Alright gene and JoelKatz, after giving this some further thought, I do agree with you that what was done here, including by those operating the pass throughs, was wrong.  Ultimately, it was an illicit redistribution of users' funds (with pirate and the PPT operators taking a cut of it), and those who ran the PPT's helped it happen.

Thanks for the discussion.  Smiley
3516  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scammer Tags- Pirate Pass Through operators ? on: September 10, 2012, 11:40:23 PM
Again, Joel, why are you targeting the PPT operators themselves if that is the case?  It sounds as though EVERYONE who received funds from the ponzi more than they invested should be labeled as a scammer, based on what you are saying.  And everyone who received less funds from the ponzi than they invested should be labeled a victim.  True?
3517  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 11:37:35 PM
No it doesn't.  He failed to pay out.  The PPT's who promised to pay out only as long as pirate paid out kept their word.  Pirate did not.
Did Pirate ever make an unconditional promise to pay out or claim that there was no risk associated with investing in him? The scam wasn't that he failed to pay out, the scam was that the transfers were fraudulent and the funds weren't invested as promised. Had he failed to pay out because of a legitimate investment loss, he wouldn't have been scamming at all. Risk is fine. Scamming is not. Pirate is not a scammer because he exposed his investors to risk. He's a scammer because all the transfers were fraudulent and the claimed profits didn't exist.
Ok, I highlighted the important part.  It's still the case that pirate didn't do what he said he would do, but the PPT operators did do what they said they would do.  Or, if they didn't, then they should be labeled scammers just like pirate.  I'm not sure I subscribe to the idea that just because they thought pirate would eventually stop paying out, they are scammers for being involved.  I DO subscribe to the idea that whenever someone doesn't hold to their word, they should be labeled as a scammer.

If I said, "I'll steal any coins that you send to me at this address," then am I a scammer?
3518  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 10:56:18 PM
Just because someone offered a PPT doesn't mean they were a scammer. The PPT OP's were taking a risk themselves. They offered a service investing in Pirate for a cut. They didn't run off with your money. Frankly, based on the evidence we have, I don't believe Pirate can even be labeled a scammer. It was part of the contract that he could declare default at any point, rendering the contract null and the money 'gone'. We don't know if he legitimately defaulted or not.

Well he iterated over and over that it wasn't a ponzi.  If it indeed was a ponzi that is enough fraud IMHO to be considered a scam.  Now we may never know for sure but given it acted like a ponzi, broke like a ponzi, the money is gone like a ponzi, and just happen to coincide with the dates of a massive national ponzi collapsing I think the burden  of proof if on him to show it wasn't a ponzi.
If a PPT insisted that it wasn't a ponzi when he full well knew it was very likely one, then I'd hand him the scammer tag in a heartbeat.
3519  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 10:55:07 PM
Gene - thanks for the post.  That helps me understand your point of view a lot more, and to a point, I agree.  You argue that it was the responsibility of theymos, and anyone else who knew it was a scam, to call it out as such, and I think that is an appropriate demand.

Here's the thing:  They did.

The only reason I don't quite agree with you wanting to label theymos a scammer is that there were accusations of this being a scam ALL over the forum.  Anyone who spent any sort of time reading about the investment before diving right in should know that the probability of it being a legitimate and sustainable investment was zilch.  If I was in theymos' shoes, I wouldn't have said anything just because everyone else already covered it so thoroughly.

Now, if you know of someone who invested in pirate because of theymos not saying anything when asked directly, you might change my mind further.  Otherwise, I'm still with him that it is each individual's responsibility to do appropriate research and due diligence when making investments.  The information to make a wise decision was out there - it wasn't hidden that this was very likely a scam.

By way of his status as forum admin and gatekeeper, Theymos had a special obligation that Micon and all the other whistle-blowers didn't have: he controls the flow of information here. It makes him more responsible. I don't doubt that many invested because Theymos permitted these scams to be promoted here, which amounts to a tacit approval. Again, he is more reponsible than most.
I disagree.  Again, it is each person's personal responsibility to research the things they are investing in.

Aside from going against centuries of common law, this is insane. By that logic, there is nothing wrong with what Matthew did because it was up to bettors to have the same skewed concept of the English language as him. By that logic, I can set up a boobie trap to shoot someone in the face as they open a door and watch their head blow off -- only to say that they should bear the burden of inspecting each door they wish to open.

Knowledge and ability to prevent fraud and injury is definitely a factor when determining culpability.

It's like saying that if I ran a forum about mushrooms, and failed to notify you about which ones were poisonous, and you ate a poisonous mushroom and died, it would be my fault.

So you're saying that this is a forum about scams? It isn't.
Oh, I am sorry - I didn't realize we were handing out scammer tags based on whether people would be indicted under common law.  I thought it was based on whether one person scammed another.

And no, it's a forum about Bitcoin.
