I don't believe Gavin, that he didn't smell the setup in London. He plays the innocent guy now, but he is not very good at acting.
...

So he did smell a setup and yet decided to go with it? Is that what you're saying? You really think he believed that community would accept CSW as Satoshi without hard evidence?

I can only say what I and a lot of people here would do if confronted with a situation like this:

1. Sign a message with the 2008 PGP key or GTFO
2. If he wants to prove to me he is Satoshi, it is me who will setup the enviroment not him. If he doesn't agree: He is not Satoshi.
3. If he provides any old conversations I would be amazed, but not even 60% convinced (go back to 1.)
4. Sign the said blocks or GTFO

Gavin does it completely different. He might get paid for this, dunno.

Thank you Captain Hindsight !!!, but that's not quite what I was asking.

BTW should Adam Back also be dismissed from any engagement in BTC development for his quotes from 'possible satoshi' (spoofed email)? Or does this logic only work for certain dev(s)?
3502  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-05-05] Adam Back Shares His Roadmap for Scaling Bitcoin on: May 05, 2016, 08:06:27 PM

"His roadmap" means nothing, at least officially. He's not even a core dev. Still waiting to see what's the agreed Core's long term vision of Bitcoin handling Visa level of txs. Especially, how would they solve economics issues.

Craig Wright U-turns on pledge to provide evidence he invented bitcoin

Craig Wright, the Australian computer scientist who claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of bitcoin, has backtracked on a pledge to provide proof of his earlier claims.

Despite promising on Tuesday that he would be offering “extraordinary evidence” to verify his claim that he is really Satoshi Nakamoto, Wright wiped his blog on Thursday, replacing it only with a message headlined: “I’m Sorry.”

In the new message, Wright continues to maintain that he really is Nakamoto, but accepts that the total absence of credible evidence means few are likely to believe him. “I believed that I could do this,” he writes. “I believed that I could put the years of anonymity and hiding behind me. But, as the events of this week unfolded and I prepared to publish the proof of access to the earliest keys, I broke. I do not have the courage. I cannot.”

Bitcoin’s Mr. Wright Now Says He Won’t Prove He Started Currency

Craig Steven Wright, the Australian businessman who this week claimed he was the creator of the digital currency bitcoin, abruptly pulled his offer to provide more proof.

Almost immediately after Mr. Wright’s claim to be bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder Satoshi Nakamoto became public this week, skeptics demanded more proof, namely digital encryption keys that would only be held by the founder. Mr. Wright pledged to offer more evidence, but withdrew the offer Thursday in a post on his website.

Bitcoin 'creator' backs out of Satoshi coin move 'proof'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36213580

Quote
The Australian entrepreneur who has claimed to be the inventor of Bitcoin has reneged on a promise to present new "proof" to support his case.

Craig Wright had pledged to move some of the virtual currency from one of its early address blocks, an act many believe can only be done by the tech's creator.

This would have addressed complaints that earlier evidence he had published online was misleading.

Dr Wright said that he was "sorry".

"I believed that I could put years of anonymity and hiding behind me," he blogged.

"But, as the events of this week unfolded and I prepared to publish the proof of access to the earliest keys, I broke. I do not have the courage. I cannot.

"When the rumours began, my qualifications and character were attacked. When those allegations were proven false, new allegations have already begun. I know now that I am not strong enough for this."

Dr Wright's claims were first reported by the BBC, the Economist and GQ magazine on Monday.

Craig Wright Ends His Attempt to Prove He Created Bitcoin: ‘I’m Sorry’

https://www.wired.com/2016/05/craig-wright-ends-attempt-prove-created-bitcoin-im-sorry/

Quote
Earlier this week, Australian Craig Wright offered what he called proof that he was Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, months after we had identified him as a possible candidate. Almost immediately the crypto community assessed that the proof was “a scam.” However, two respected members of the Bitcoin community—Jon Matonis, a former board member of the Bitcoin Foundation, and Gavin Andresen, one of Bitcoin’s earliest programmers—said they had privately seen actual proof that Wright was Nakamoto. We spoke to Andresen, who described the method Wright used to convince him, telling us at the time that he was “still convinced [Wright’s] Satoshi despite the really weird proof he’s put in his blog post,” but admitting “it’s certainly possible I was bamboozled.”

After that backlash, Wright promised on Tuesday that he would share “extraordinary proof” soon that would convince the rest of the world of what Andresen and Matonis apparently already believed.

I know that this weakness will cause great damage to those that have supported me, and particularly to Jon Matonis and Gavin Andresen. I can only hope that their honour and credibility is not irreparably tainted by my actions. They were not deceived, but I know that the world will never believe that now. I can only say I’m sorry.

Well, it was fun.

Isn't all that matters is if coins in Satoshi's wallets begin to move? That'd be a bit of a shock to the bitcoin market but would it be fatal?
No not at all, the only "fatal" thing would be a million coin dump and once that sell order was ate through it would rise again.

He doesn't even have to dump it, simply proving that he can could trigger massive panic-selling. And 1m dump + panic-selling could easily mean double digit price range. Sure, things would eventually get back to normal, possibly in the long-run it would even be a good thing if that happened, but how would miners survive long period of mining at massive loss (especially with halving few months away)?
3512  Economy / Speculation / Re: Market reaction if C. Wright moves coin? on: May 04, 2016, 09:03:39 PM
I would predict another correction - because it is clear that he cannot be trusted with those 1M BTCs (plus he has financial problems).
...
Definitely. The question is how low would it go. Right after BBC, Economist published the story, price went down something like $10 (I can be wrong on this one), BTC lending rates on Polo instantly went up 3-4 fold, meaning people were expecting some sort of crash. His 'proof' was debunked only after 90 minutes and things got back to normal.

According to him they are locked in a trust until 2020.  That should be very bullish for the price because it provides certainty that those coins will not move until then.  Uncertainty about Satoshi and his coins has been a drag on bitcoins price forever.

If CW is in fact Satoshi, the fact that the coins are locked up makes sense considering he has had financial problems that would have been wiped out if he could touch the coins.

But if he was to move even 1 satoshi, that would mean coins are not locked and he's got access to them.

I also don't buy the "trust" story. Afaik the coins are sitting there since forever, so there's no way he had transferred them into trust account. So how would that work? He deposited his private keys with a trust, like in a safe deposit box? That's not quite how trust funds work.

...
The market is a fucking pussy so it'll probably have a shit anyway.

I like your style  Wink

Market is a pussy because everyone expect others to act like pussies and start panic-selling. Self-fulfilling prophecy kind of thing.

We still waiting for a public explanation on why Gavin announced this prematurely and then subsequently and allegedly claimed he was hacked {Or was that just a over-reaction from the Core devs?}
...

He pretty much explained what happened.

He got duped. Maybe he didn't put enough effort to make sure he wasn't being tricked by CSW, as he was sure that CSW would make the signature public anyway, if that was the case CSW wouldn't have any reason to pull any tricks on him.

The 'hacking concern' was made up by Core devs to revoke Gavin's commit access, apparently they refused to reinstate it even when it turned out Gavin wasn't hacked. Just taking advantage of the situation I guess.

Bitcoin expert: It was a mistake to blog about 'creator'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36202904

A leading figure in the Bitcoin community has expressed regret about a blog backing an Australian's claim to have invented the crypto-currency.

Craig Wright announced on Monday that he was behind Satoshi Nakamoto - the pseudonym used by Bitcoin's creator.

The same day, Gavin Andresen, chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, wrote he was "convinced beyond a reasonable doubt" of Dr Wright's case.

But Mr Andresen said he now thinks it was a "mistake" to have posted.

The expert had written that he had privately witnessed Dr Wright using cryptographic keys that "only Satoshi should possess".

But critics called Dr Wright's claim into doubt when it emerged that part of the evidence the entrepreneur presented in public could have been generated using a string of digits linked to a seven-year-old transaction made by Satoshi, accessible via a search engine.

Australian businessman Craig Wright says he will provide "extraordinary proof" he is the creator of bitcoin following his controversial announcement.

Mr Wright, 45, told the BBC, The Economist and GQ on Monday he was Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym used by the creator of the digital currency.

His declaration was widely questioned, with computer security experts labelling it a "scam" and The Economist calling on him to further substantiate his claim.

The Brisbane-born entrepreneur responded with a blog post on Tuesday, saying he would move some of the early bitcoin in the coming days to prove he is Mr Nakamoto.

"I will be posting a series of pieces that will lay the foundations for this extraordinary claim, which will include posting independently-verifiable documents and evidence addressing some of the false allegations that have been levelled," Mr Wright wrote.

"I will present what I believe to be "extraordinary proof" and ask only that it be independently validated."

The Australian academic who claims to have invented Bitcoin has vowed to produce “extraordinary proof” that he is the genius behind the virtual currency.

Craig Wright, who came forward as Bitcoin’s mysterious architect Satoshi Nakamoto on Monday, responded to widespread questions that the evidence he had presented was sorely lacking by saying he would show indisputable proof.

Bitcoin’s vocal internet community had rounded on Mr Wright after he came forward, claiming he was revealing himself after seven years to end speculation about its inception.

The digital currency has become a phenomenon since it was introduced in 2009. Investors and banks have taken a keen major interest in the technology and advocates promise a new financial order, but the identity of the pseudonymous Nakamoto has remained a mystery.

Satoshi or not.... he seems like a bit of a cunt doesn't he?

Funny how everyone wanted Satoshi to be some great noble guy and it turns out he's a right fucking Australian plonker - and a fucking cunt at the same time.  That is the funny bit.

Now-now.  Do not get ahead of yourself.  He said wright was "a bit of a cunt", not a "fucking cunt".  There is a measured difference between 'a bit of a cunt' and a 'fucking cunt'.  I think it is rather unfair to make that leap.

What about "a bit of a fucking cunt"?

Fresh update.

Gavin's latest comment:

https://dankaminsky.com/2016/05/03/the-cryptographically-provable-con-man/

Quote
...So I mailed Gavin Andreson, Chief Scientist of the Bitcoin Foundation, “What the heck?”:

"What is going on here?
There’s clear unambiguous cryptographic evidence of fraud and you’re lending credibility to the idea that a public key operation could should or must remain private?"

He replied as follows, quoted with permission:

Yeah, what the heck?

I was as surprised by the ‘proof’ as anyone, and don’t yet know exactly what is going on.

It was a mistake to agree to publish my post before I saw his– I assumed his post would simply be a signed message anybody could easily verify.

And it was probably a mistake to even start to play the Find Satoshi game, but I DO feel grateful to Satoshi.

If I’m lending credibility to the idea that a public key operation should remain private, that is entirely accidental. OF COURSE he should just publish a signed message or (equivalently) move some btc through the key associated with an early block.

Feel free to quote or republish this email.

If Mr Wright were the inventor of Bitcoin, I will be very disappointed. I thought Satoshi would be totally different person.

I know that feel. I always pictured him as Bolo Yeung, but 7ft tall and with wings.

Craig Wright can't compete...

...
There is also no proof of him creating Bitcoin itself, so how do we know it was him?

There's never going to be 100% proof.

I would like to personally thank you Mr. Wright, I hope you use the forum
