3561  Other / Off-topic / Re: ADVICE: Build your own PC after the quarantine on: September 25, 2020, 12:30:42 PM
It isn't always true that you save money by building your own.

That's correct, but some -- which are more into computers (not necessary tech savvy) -- may prefer to build the machine by themselves. You know, in modding, for example, there is a saying: 'the normal user says "why change it (in this case it's about the PC's case) if it works like this?", while a modder says "why not change it if I'm able to change it?"'. I believe this can also apply to building a computer piece by piece instead of buying it built by a shop.

IMO NVMe SSDs are overkill for any sort of casual use.

Why do you think they are overkill?

Unless your motherboard has free slots for it (and if you're already considering rebuilding / substantially upgrading your PC, it might not)

Well, that could be a problem for some old motherboards. That is, if you were talking about free PCI Express slots. Regarding M.2 slots, these are always free, unless you already have a SSD plugged into the M.2. And these ports were launched in 2012. What I'm trying to say is that many recent motherboards are equipped with such slot for a SSD. And you can use it for both NVMe SSDs and SATA III SSDs (although SATA III SSDs with M.2 form factor are rare).

As for the SSDs' limited lifetime, well, HDDs aren't immortal either. Take my research with a grain of salt but AFAIK consumer HDDs and SSDs seem to have a similar lifespan (given both the SSD and HDD models are of similar quality).

Uhm... that's debatable. I mean yes, HDDs are not immortal. I was talking about the lifespan now. I guess you can say both that the allegation is true and not true, depending from which point of view you say it. In my case, knowing for sure that my SSD has XXX writing cycles (although this number is the order of thousands) scares me in part. Because I know that when that number is reached, the SSD is gone. Each of its cells was (re)written that XXX number of times and all are dead now. On the other hand, HDDs are more sensible as they having moving parts inside them. You have to be careful when you transport them, try to avoid shocks and so on, indeed. And if you give them a bad treatment they're gone too. I understand that. But at least I know I'm not limited from the very beginning of using it to a fixed number of writing cycles.

So, regarding that, I'd say (as an old rabbi, lol) that I assume we are both right.
3562  Other / Off-topic / Re: ADVICE: Build your own PC after the quarantine on: September 25, 2020, 05:39:42 AM
A good SSD is one which has NVME technology (Non Volatile Memory Express), which uses the speed of your PCI Express. There are two types: M2 format factor and those which plug directly into a PCI Express slot. The lattest reach speeds of at least 2 GB/s for both reading and writing.

There are also other SSDs which use the SATA III's speed, but these ones are way slower. SATA III supports a maximum speed of 600 MB/s but most of SATA III SSDs will reach a 450-500 MB/s speed for reading/writing (the writing speed is always lower than reading speed).

That being said, not all SSDs are a "must have". Indeed, even a SATA III SSD can revive an old PC, but if you really want to feel the benefits of a good SSD, you should buy a NVME SSD.

excepting this, HDDs should not be fully excluded from PCs. They are cheap now, even large ones (4-6 TB), as the price per GB dropped to a few cents, and they are a good way for storing your rarely used data (photos, old movies etc.). There is no difference in watching a photo/movie stored on the HDD compared with doing the same operation with such file stored on a SSD.

The problem with SSDs is that they have a limited life time. They can be fully filled with data for a certain number of cycles. That's why you should avoid over-using a SSD. Use a HDD each time when it's not necessary to use the SSD. Indeed, the OS should be placed on SSDs. And so too should the games. But avoid using the SSD for movies, photos, audio files or other archived files used rarely, in order to extend its life.

Also, for the same reason, a SSD should never be defragmented. There is no need to, as it is very fast. But also, when you defragment a disk, it moves your data in order to better arrange it. Doing that on a SSD implies that the defragment program will erase some data placed on a specific part of the drive in order to move it somewhere else, thus all data will be arranged. But this operation would also lower the (limited) writing cycles of the SSD.

Or are you talking about antipathy on the part of very active members of the forum towards certain individuals?

Yes, but also antipathy of any individual/group towards certain individuals/group (could be race, rank, nationality etc.)

What about a prize for the most illiterate user? I'd propose hacker1001101001 and andulolika. There would be a great battle between them, but I'd bet on andulolika for winning this prize.

Also: what about a prize for the lamest Otoman? The list is big here, but best nominees would be DragonDance, wolvoo, mhanbostanci, BitcoinTurk, Cean, Vispilio, Blacknavy, gumusi or miyav.

There is a topic created by GazetaBitcoin called Gangs of Bitcointalk that can help maybe:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5226757.0

While it is an honor for me to see my masterpiece mentioned here, I don't know how OP could use my topics though...

P.S. Its thread is blocked, so I was unable to insert the clickable link. (I would appreciate it if you could explain how to quote posts in locked threads.

If you want to quote lock topics, you can follow the information from this topic: A guide to quoting posts in locked topics. You can use the first way described there, the second way, or a mixed way. I found a third way which implies combining the first two methods. However, it's not difficult. If you still can't manage, let me know and I'll try to explain with more detail Smiley
3565  Other / Off-topic / Re: Share Good Movies Please? on: September 24, 2020, 06:32:19 AM
The Twilight Zone.

There are three of them,  50's  80's   and   2019

Actually, there are four of them Smiley There was also a 1 season Twilight Zone in 2002 and the host of the show was Forest Whitaker: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318252/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_8.

Twilight Zone is indeed a very good serie. I already recommended it in a previous post, containing many other great TV Shows. I remember that from about same time as the '80s serie other great similar TV shows emerged, such as The Outer Limits, Nightmare Cafe or Tales From the Crypt. However, The Outer Limits was the most close to Twilight Zone.

I didn't know that the serie was relaunched in 2019. I just made some digging and I saw that a second season was aired already in 2020. This morning I already downloaded the two seasons and I'll start watching them as soon as I finish Lucifer season 5. Thanks for this precious info! It's very precious for big fans of Twilight Zone, such as I am!

You can start watching the 2019 and then go to the 80's and if you want to continue to the 50's

I believe that if you watch them in this order (if you never watched these series), you might tend to not enjoy watching the old series after the newer ones, as the old ones have fewer visual and audio effects, the image is less sharper and so on. My advice for someone which wants to watch all the series would be to start with the old ones and watch the new ones only after.
3566  Other / Off-topic / Re: Share Good Movies Please? on: September 22, 2020, 07:32:52 AM
I don't think there will be next matrix ,but i am looking forward for one.

Hehe, actually there will be a next Matrix: The Matrix 4. It is supposed to be launched on April 1st, 2022.

Excepting the news about the next Matrix, these are the movies I watched lately:

- Artemis Fowl
- Bad Boys For Life
- Prisoners
- The War with Grandpa.

I wasn't too impressed by Artemis Fowl, but the last three are great movies. Bad Boys For Life doesn't need any introduction (I presume Smiley ), while Prisoners is a movie starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. The War With Grandpa is a nice comedy starring Robert De Niro.

I also watched a nice, 6 episodes TV series, named Into The Night. Its action remembered me of first season of Lost. And I said about the first season of Lost as that one was great; the other ones just destroyed the series lol. If you'll enjoy first season of Into The Night, there are good news, as another season will be launched.

One last TV serie which I just started watching: Lucifer season 05 (which is supposed to be also the final season). The first part of the season (containing 8 episodes) was launched recently; the second part of the season will be aired at the beginning of next year.
3567  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Book are you currently reading? on: September 21, 2020, 02:23:59 PM
Since two days ago I started reading another book from the ones I ordered recently:

Suelette Dreyfus & Julian Assange - Underground

It is a fascinating book about the rise of Australian hackers and phreakers from 1980s, including the early activity of Julian Assange which, by that time, was known under the nym Mendax. For all Assange lovers this is a must read.

Besides , when it was launched in 1997, the book's price was 400$!!! I managed to buy it now at about 19$. Get it while you can!
3568  Other / Meta / Re: Appeal the ban "CoinIdol News" account on: September 21, 2020, 07:09:17 AM
I just reported 69 shillings of OP, as she followed the same path as CoinIdol News. From these 69 reports, 21 were shilling topics which were locked by the moderator. The other 48 were simple shilling posts, which were deleted. As a result of having less topics, OP turned back to Newbie rank, while she was a Member (or Jr. Member) before I made these reports (I don't remember exactly, but I believe she had the Member rank though).

Seeing now that her posts were also deleted, I hope she understands once and for all to stop these spams and shillings.

Still looks like a double standard.

I see post with no "personal opinion" from the author in the Press section just a copy from the lead of the original publication. And you leave it. But you hunt on me Huh and my personal years old replies.

I was the hunter.

And I'm hunting any spammer / shiller. It is hard to find them all, but we, the spam guards are doing our best to keep the forum clean. Some are missed at a moment, but found later (as it happened to your posts, for example). But there is no double standard. It's just there are not enough reporters to properly compete with all the spammers. Besides, there are not enough moderators to analyze all the reports. I, for example, have 1055 unhandled reports, which will never be analyzed as they were made more than a month ago and the mods can;t see them anymore.

What I want to say is it's just a matter of time until other spammers are reported as well. No double standards, don't worry Smiley
3569  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [General] Bitcoin Wallets - Which, what, why? on: September 19, 2020, 05:39:25 AM
Revolut is not a crypto wallet, do not let yourself be tricked into that! With Revolut you can send and receive money (fiat money), usually faster than using regular banks, but it certainly is not a crypto wallet. Similar with eToro, on Revolut you have CFDs (Contracts For Difference), not crypto. Which means that you have in possession the value if your crypto, not the cryptocurrency itself. You don't have a public key, nor a private key. It is not a crypto wallet.
3570  Other / Meta / Re: Hero Member banned permanently for pilgarism on: September 18, 2020, 08:12:50 AM
If mods would take your appeal into consideration and unban you, given the change of rules to temp-ban for plagiarism (which I'm not aware of, anyway), then they should ban you again (permanently) for evading you ban. Thus, you'll end up where you are now.

From my side, consider that you were unbanned for plagiarism then banned again for evading the ban, if that makes you happier. Forget about the ban for plagiarism: now you are banned for another reason.
3571  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: disable Press board & lock topics unattended by OPs in past months on: September 17, 2020, 06:18:22 PM
Thank you all for sharing your opinions! But how about the second suggestion? Nobody said anything about that. Do you think it would prevent the spam if the mods would close topics left unattended by the authors for long time?
3572  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: disable Press board & lock topics unattended by OPs in past months on: September 17, 2020, 02:39:03 PM
That would be a part of the solution, yes. But it is hard to define what is notable and what is not, as you don't have a proper metric. Even if a publication would be considered in a select circle of respectable sources, this wouldn't automatically mean that all its articles are notable, right?

On the other hand, spammers would continue to exist. And they could farm their accounts by posting just articles from Guardian...
3573  Other / Meta / Suggestion: disable Press board & lock topics unattended by OPs in past months on: September 17, 2020, 02:20:22 PM
I reached to this idea after seeing a recent post of hilariousandco:

I still think the Press section should be locked/archived... or at the very least we clarify that only notable sources are allowed which should mean no crytpo-based sites.

The fact is that the Press board is spammed a lot by various users for various reasons: farming accounts, building notoriety, shilling, hoping to obtain visitors for a specific website and, lastly (and unfortunately), for sharing news with the forum members. I said unfortunately as that although this should be the main reason for posting in Press board, it became the last reason.

Even so, thinking that some users are trying to follow the rules and post in Press board just for sharing news, they usually don't share "notable press hits" (this being the board's description), but usual, regular news. Of course, here comes another debatable subject on what is notable and what is not notable, as there is no measure for quantifying a press release and see if it is -- let's say -- very notable (breaking news lol), notable, less notable etc. Practically, considering if a subject is notable or not is up to the topic's author. But, in my opinion, most of the articles shared there are not notable at all. For these reasons, the board's utility dropped very much and it seems now to be leading mostly to spam, shilling, accounts farming and other similar activities.

Another idea for reducing spamming, shilling and accounts farming is to lock the topics where the authors are not active anymore for a number of X months (let's say 3 months or other reasonable interval; of course, the term "reasonable" should be defined by someone in charge for taking such decision). The same should apply for topics where the authors are still active in the forum, but they didn't post anymore inside their topics for X months.

There are so many topics now which are continuously spammed and their authors abandoned them. They are either not active anymore or not interested anymore about their own topics. The most of these topics are just fueling spammers, leading to 0 benefits for the forum as a whole. If the topics would be locked automatically (by mods or by a script) after X amount of time since the author didn't write anything inside the respective topics, spam would be greatly reduced.

Opinions?

3575  Other / Meta / Re: What is exactly the functionality of "Report to moderator"? on: September 17, 2020, 01:41:54 PM
So, that report has been marked as bad due to being duplicate.

That would make sense. It's interesting though that the post was flagged as bad but not deleted at first.

Uhm...prior seeing this I could swear it wasn't a duplicate... Very interesting. It was my mistake then. Thanks for finding this out, hosseinimr93!

Either way I wouldn't worry about one report.

It seems it was my mistake after all, although I still don't realize how this was possible. But I'll follow your suggestion and not worry too much about it.

Ai ramane cu toti cei 26.761 lei in buzunar.
3577  Economy / Services / Re: [OPEN] ★☆★ 777Coin Signature Campaign ★☆★ (Member-Hero Accepted) (New) on: September 16, 2020, 08:26:33 AM
Did you see me?
I applied sooner than worldofcoins. He is in the Spreadsheet, but I am not.

Stating your wish to be a part of a signature campaign doesn't mean that you are automatically added to the respective campaign. You just expressed your availability. The decision is manager's not yours. Being part of a signature campaign is a privilege, not a right. This is why the participants are not picked in the order they expressed their availability, but in the order decided by the manager: only he can say who is eligible for his campaign, depending on his criteria. The criteria may include, but are not limited to, the quality of the posts made by an user wishing to join the campaign, his overall posting habits, if s/he woke up recently etc.

What I don't understand is why you are wearing campaign's avatar, signature and personal text prior of being accepted.
3578  Other / Meta / Re: Does Vod deserve VIP status? on: September 16, 2020, 07:55:39 AM
VIP does not match.

I prefer to see the profile: @Vod as below:

I am also sharing YOSHIE's opinion. His suggestion can be set easy, with a custom title. VIP / DONATOR ranks have certain rules for being awarded, already highlighted by mk4. But a custom title would be able to reflect VOD's contributions.
3579  Other / Meta / Re: What is exactly the functionality of "Report to moderator"? on: September 16, 2020, 07:52:07 AM
To be honest, I wanted to ask about that before, but then somehow I forgot.

Actually I asked that too, a few posts upper than this one Smiley Apparently, in that case of mine, as hosseinimr93 observed, the reported topics got locked by mods.

Besides, I observed also another instance when posts are flagged as good but they are not deleted: this also seems to happen when the respective user gets banned. I reported many users which got banned and they reported posts were flagged as good, but got never deleted. Perhaps it was work in vain, since the users were already banned.

And yes, I also observed cases when the users don't get banned, the reported posts are flagged as good but still don't get deleted -- but these cases were rare though.

As stated by Rikafip, it can be a human error as well.

Oh well, if the mod which analyzed this report of mine sees these posts, maybe he will change the status of that particular post. Let's hope for the best Smiley

Thank you all for sharing your opinions again.

As an Editor at Coinidol.com I want to appeal this ban and find out why the account is suspended and publications deleted?
We do not make advertising, we post our news.

Actually you are shilling your website. Again and again and again.

that user coindolnews was famous for posting BS that always got deleted, IIRC, that user most times gets the whole of their posts deleted by the moderator, prolly mods have decided to ban, nuke or tem ban that user. See this thread complaining about coindolnews' BS posting activities made by LeGaulois: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5253793.msg54573547#msg54573547

See also how many times Coin Idol was mentioned in this topic: List of advertising shills. Mods please review and ban as appropriate..

I myself got tired of how many posts I reported for that account. I spent months reporting every single day all the shillings they made, but it seemed to be in vain. It seemed so much to be in vain that o_e_l_e_o took the sad decision to lock his topic, as he believed there is no chance in the world to stop that bot named Coin Idol.

I kept following everyday that account and I was surprised that it didn't post anymore for the last few days. I wondered if it finally got banned but it seemed too nice to be true. Apparently, it was true. One less spammer from the forum, after I worked for months for this to happen. It's a blessing for the entire forum!

@o_e_l_e_o: We won! The bot has been defeated! Smiley

I would be happy to hear your suggestion on what can be improved. And I assure you I will do everything to make it possible.

This is simple: stop spamming and shilling.

I must also note that we did read the guidance of what publications are allowed on the BitcoinTalk. And tried not to violate these rules.

The account CoinIdol News was made specifically to share our news with the community, and not to discuss it.

You can share the news on your website. There are a lot of crypto news websites but not any respectable one shills itself here: have you ever seen CoinTelegraph shilling itself here? Or CoinDesk? No. Just shady websites like yours do that. There is a bunch of such spammers, hopefully all being banned sooner or later: WorldCoin Index, Fintoism etc. I take hours everyday to report all this nonsense. If anyone wants to read your articles, s/he can visit your website, not Bitcoin Forum and to get redirected from here to your website.

Section “Press” is dedicated to it, no? That seems not to be prohibited on BitcoinTalk. Or is it now?

Have you ever seen the description of Press board? I believe you didn't. Let me enlighten you:

Quote
Press
Notable press hits.

"Notable", you see that? Nothing of your spams is notable. Just spamming and shilling.
