Ok, so then I went back to the paper and read the relevant section so I can go ahead and clarify for the purposes of posterity. Smiley

1) This does not have to do with the 51% attack.  This section of the paper is about calculating the probability that a node can spend bitcoin and then maliciously include a transaction that reverses that spend in a subsequent block.  The high-level observation is that the attacker necessarily has to start behind the blockchain because it has to wait for the first transaction to be included in a block before trying to maliciously undo it.

2) The "infinite distribution" referred to is a poisson distribution (a random distribution) so there is an infinite tail.  The particular rearrangement just has to with manipulating the expression of the probability in such a way that there's not an infinite sum to calculate.  By rearranging the sum, we can calculate a finite sum from 0 to k

3) It looks like the coin as printed actually has an error, Satoshi's paper has q= 'probability that he attacker will find the next block' whereas the coin has a 'g', which is undefined in Satoshi's paper.

Cheers!

So celebrate this, what are we calling it? Victory? This 'victory' for bitcoin, but know that it is a victory that can, and will, bite some of you in the ass.

Why is it going to 'bite some of us in the ass'.  I've booked a hotel with expedia in the past and didn't have a problem.  I used a visa card.  Next time I use expedia I may get to pay with BTC.  I think that would be wonderfully convenient.  Can you be a little more clear?

Why does anyone memorialize anything? From war heroes to baseball players, from symbols to comic heros, from words to flowers, the sun, moon and stars? Because they like it, it means something, it has to do with something etc. After reading the white paper and understanding it to the point my education level can comprehend I enjoyed this specific (formula, sum, equation, whatever it's called) and what it had to do with. I like that to the lamen eye it is complex, incomprehensible, and gives a little insight into the complexity of bitcoin.

Um, so it sounds like the emphasis is on "little" here.  Smiley

And I'm not saying it doesn't look nice.  Sounds like learning what it refers to is up to me.  Cheers!

Ugh I have you a direct quote as to what it means from the white paper.

You can say "ugh" if you want, but your "direct quote" wasn't very informative.  You vaguely mentioned an "infinite tail" of a distribution and "rearranging" something.  You referred to a sum as an equation.  An explanation of what it means would simply say what the values of g,k,lambda, refer to in context.  I think it's quite okay for you to simply say "i don't know, it looks pretty".  But pretending that you explained something isn't really helpful.
3564  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are the fucking silk road coins sold ? on: June 29, 2014, 08:12:51 PM
When the government auctions off assets in a closed auction, do they disclose the final results? I think we may all be waiting around for news, when there will be none.

Just watch the blockchain to see about transer of the coins.  Once the coins start going out from the slik road addy, then you know they got sold and delivered even if you don't know who bought them.
3565  Economy / Services / Re: Paying 0.5 BTC! on: June 29, 2014, 08:11:39 PM
I have to say that if the OP doesn't have the patience to read through docs and understand cryptos well enough to carry out the process on his/her own, I doubt very much that any crypto created will be worth very much.  Nonetheless, this does seem like an easy way for someone to make 0.5BTC by just making a video for the OP.
3566  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Unmasking BTC-E.com on: June 29, 2014, 08:09:37 PM
Why try and hunt them down?  BTC-e is the only exchange I half way trust these days.  I have used them for a few years now and NEVER an issue with them.

I'm not against BTC-e, I just want to point out the fallacy in your argument by using an example: many folks used Mt. Gotx for years and NEVER had an issue, until the issues began.
3567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ask Amazon for Bitcoin Payments on: June 29, 2014, 08:07:52 PM
Amazon already has something called "Amazon Coins" in addition to gift cards. Basically they are like "credits" for Kindle Fire apps and games, etc. and by buying them, you can get those products at a discount. I haven't looked into it too much. Nothing to do with crypto, though.

Right, I think these Amazon Coins, with the name __ Coin, is what leads to people getting confused and thinking that Amazon is interested in making their own competitor to BTC.  However, as you rightly point out, this doesn't have anything to do with crypto, it's just like frequent flyer miles on an airline or something.

Check out this Twitter...  "@amazon just sent me an email saying they will accept Bitcoin "

It does say you can rest assured it will be taken care of.  I guess BTC at Amazon is in the works Smiley

It's a rather odd feature to put on the coin. I don't agree with the decision.

Otherwise, nice looking coin!

Coins traditionally display history and significant events/things. the 51% issue is a significant thing in Bitcoin and is worth memorializing on a silver coin.

Fair enough, I'm not saying it shouldn't be memorialized.  I'm just wondering if the designer of the coin can comment on exactly what is being memorialized.  So far all I've learned is 'something to do with the 51% attack'.  But then again, I understand that I can go read the paper if I really want to understand.

3572  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Buying BTC with credit card? on: June 29, 2014, 07:52:34 PM
are there not any escrow services?

Sure, if you are willing to have the escrow hold onto your coins for the six to twelve months until your ability to do a charge back expires.

Once you can no longer claw back the money, you'll get your coins.

I'll do this right now for you if you want.

If the OP only want's the btc as a longish term speculation or some sort of savings, then this might not be a bad offer actually.
3573  Economy / Speculation / Re: Argentina heading for a repeat of 2001 collapse on: June 29, 2014, 07:50:47 PM
And they wont even win the world cup so the only way to make happy their people is by adopting bitcoin as a currency

They may well win the Word Cup since they will not have play Germany or Brazil until the final

Bitcoin as a currency for Argentina will not happen with the current government

Exactly, the gov't isn't going to switch over to btc.  However, individuals very well may do so.  This wouldn't be terrible for bitcoin prices either.  However, i think that folks who put money in bitcoins in argentina probably aren't goign to do so for money they want to spend, but for money they want to save.  That's my guess.  I suppose it's probably hard to find a grocery store in argentina that accepts btc.

Ok so due to the implementation of the new PM-count system, it would be preferred if everyone could have their requested amounts in before 7:00pm UTC on Tuesday,

I find this confusing.  We are asked to send the PM before 19:00 UTC on Tuesday, but ...

Quote
but you may send your amounts on Monday, or up to 12:00pm UTC.

we can send them as early as 12:00 Monday, ...

Quote
Requests (unless with good reason) will not be accepted earlier than Monday 7:00pm UTC.

but not earlier than 19:00 Monday?!  Can you clarify this paragraph?  Perhaps simply define the window in which you accept requests: from HH:MM DD to HH:MM DD.  Also, can I suggest you use the 24 hour notation, am/pm just adds confusion (especially when you're mentioning a 12), IMHO.
Ok for all of simplicities' sake, you cannot send PM before Monday (Your time zone is acceptable) but you CAN send PMs DURING Monday OR Tuesday. I am allowing for both days because people are bound to good up and miss it one day, so I'm trying to provide about 2 days for people to send their amounts in.

So in short: You cannot send before Monday, but you can during Monday or Tuesday.

I'm giving 2 days for the NEXT TWO WEEKS, so everyone can understand what the new system is going to entail. After that, it's back to Tuesday PMs only.

I'm really sorry for any confusion, I was kind of tired when I wrote that and probably goofed up on some things.

Thanks for the clarificiation, we send a pm to you with our post count on Monday or Tuesday. Smiley

What does the equation describe?

It's from the bitcoin white paper regarding 51% attack

Does look nice, but I'm also curious about the specifics of this sum.  Why would we want to see it on the face of a silver bitcoin?  Perhaps the designer can offer a comment.

It's a rather odd feature to put on the coin. I don't agree with the decision.

Otherwise, nice looking coin!

It's the equation on rearranging to avoid summing the infinite tail of the distribution which would prevent (correct me if I'm using the wrong terminology) or make it less likely for an attacker to be able to 51%. The equation is appealing to the eye, incorporates the complexity of bitcoin, and brings some substance into the design. We understand everyone's desire for bitcoin to go to the moon but it's also nice to step back and think about the complexity, the security, and the sheer innovation that is bitcoin.  This is why we chose to incorporate something like this equation into the design.

I guess I need to go back to that paper to see this formula in context.  I just want to note that this is not and equation (there's no equals sign), it's a sum.  Also, it doesn't look like it's a sum to infinity.  It seems to be a sum from z to k.  Again, I guess I need to take a look at the paper for more detail, but what distribution?  what infinite tail?  The number of miners is always going to be finite.

I just want to say how cool it is that you guys have released the code of your website.  I already liked this project but now I love it.  I think it's a bold and proper move and I just want to say how much respect I have for folks with this kinda attitude.

Finally, just one question: I noticed your use of CC-SA-NC license.  I think this means copyleft with only non-commercial use allowed.  Are you guys yourselves non-commercial, is this a non-profit service?  Or are you guys a commercial outfit and you're simply limiting the reuse of your code to non-commercial stuff?

Thanks again for the code release!
