3561  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What happened at block 310853. Somebody get lucky in Montreal? on: July 16, 2014, 05:58:40 PM
You do realize that it's KnC finding those blocks, right?  It's not some rich yahoo in the great white north solo-mining with a few petahash... well, I guess if you consider Sweden the great white north and KnC is certainly a couple rich yahoos... lol.

Actually it came from stratum. Btcguild.com hosted in Montreal.
http://www.iplocationfinder.com/stratum.btcguild.com

The loot went to
https://blockchain.info/address/1H1sq6Msgt9HjRrBuz8ieZdThzWXS6oPVA

When it first came out it showed 102% of network hash.

Name Server: GINA.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM
Name Server: JOSH.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM

Are also owned by Btcguild.

Is it possible to hijack a large cloud and make it do, sha 256 for a minute?

No, actually it came from KnC.  It just happened to be relayed to blockchain.info by BTCGuild, as eleuthria explains quite well in his post.

Let me give you an example of one I know.  Bock 297777 was found on April 26th.  I know, because I'm the one who found it.  I was mining in p2pool, and it was one of my S1s that found the block.  If you look at who relayed it, you would think someone in Prague found it.  I was running on my local p2pool node, in my home... and my home is not in the Czech Republic Smiley
3562  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382 on: July 16, 2014, 05:53:03 PM
Well, I decided to wait for Batch 4 and hope, he's delivering in the first week of August.
If not, I will open a case on ebay to get buyers protection for PayPal and get my money back.

Or does anybody know, when Batch 4 is rolling out ?? Maybe Bitmain is fixing the lower hashrate till then ....
Nobody knows when batch 4 is rolling out except for Bitmaintech (the real ones, not the guy on eBay).  His assurance that it will be delivered in the first week of August is nothing more than wishful thinking on his part, and blind acceptance on yours.

At least you have the option of getting some protection from eBay/PayPal since you can claim nothing was ever shipped.  Just make sure you completely follow the process through eBay (i.e. all communication, payments, invoicing, etc are done directly there and not in some other fashion).

Dear buyers,

I am currently awaiting reply from the manufacturer.

I feel unable to give a final price yet.

I understand that the situation in Israel is delicate.

I hope this has no influence on SPTech.

Did they catch a missile at the plant?
Did you hear from them?
So far more then 1 dozen missiles have passed through the iron dome.

any news at all?

Well, since Spondoolies-Tech is currently online, I don't imagine anything happened to them personally, or any of their facilities.

@hawkfish007, gotta love the scammers... I'm wondering if posting that wallet address is such good idea... oh, and definitely report to mods.
3564  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382 on: July 16, 2014, 05:36:30 PM
Hmmm ... And why is the real Bitmaintech not doing anything against such "reseller" ??

On the other Hand; Someone in Germany is claiming on ebay, that they have S3 IN STOCK and ready to ship ...
How's that possible ??
It's not, and they don't.

Bitmaintech does not directly sell on eBay, or Amazon, or Joe's Miner Shack.  Resellers sell on those outlets, and they are constrained by Bitmain's shipping times and dates.  No reseller currently has an S3 in stock (well, perhaps some Chinese might have picked up their S3 directly from Bitmain's factory...).  If they tell you it's in stock, they're lying.
3565  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: CPU vs. GPU mining on: July 16, 2014, 04:02:21 PM
Can someone tell me, why GPU mining is better then CPU mining?? It's so strangely, i think.
Since nobody actually answered your question, let me.  GPU mining is better than CPU mining because a GPU can far better handle parallel processing.
3566  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: It seems impossible to me to successfuly explain the concept of mining to... on: July 16, 2014, 02:56:38 PM
Trick them by asking them the same questions about fiat.

Like I said before, they will simply say that fiat is backed up by entire countries and armies and that comparing BTC to the euro and dollar supremacy is somewhat ridiculous. Can't really find a counter argument against the "backed by armies" argument. If you think about it, there's lots of powerful people with big interests in fiat not crashing to perpetuate their monopoly.
That's a bit different than your original query, which was how to explain mining.  As I originally stated, and then the joint detailed, mining is nothing more than processing transactions in the ledger (the blockchain).  Expanding the credit card analogy, you can state that credit card transactions are "mined" as well, just that the mining process is wholly owned and controlled by the credit card provider (Visa, MC, etc).  You have to trust that provider to accurately and truthfully manage everything for you.  Want to make a purchase?  You have to trust that the company will properly authorize and settle that transaction.  Since nobody owns Bitcoin, there is no centralized entity you have to trust.
3567  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 16, 2014, 01:23:43 PM
So I need some help here peoples. I do fly in fly out work with a 3 week on roster. So im going to be away from home when the miners arrive. My girl is home but is absolutely computer illiterate. I have setup the power supply ready for when they arrive with labelling for which cables go where so she can just plug them in. But as far as setting it up goes would i be able to setup the miners remotely with teamviewer with another computer set up at home? Reading about the S1 seems the internet has to be disconnected and then connect the compter directly to the miner. Is this true with the s3 do you think?
Does anyone have any ideas how I could set up the miners remotely?
Thanks Smiley

If you put two NIC's in your PC you can preconfigure one to talk to the miner (with crossover cable) and leave the other one to connect to your network.  Then all she has to do initially is power the miner and plug it into the crossover cable.  You can then remote in and configure it.  If you set the IP as the last bit of configuration, she can then just change the ethernet cable to put it on your main network.

Unfortunately I don't have another network card Sad

Does your computer have wifi and a hardwired NIC you can do the same thing suggested here?

Nar I use one of my GPU rigs for a computer and that is wired directly into the router (well through a switch first)

I have set the missus up with printed screenshots etc of what she needs to do. Find out Monday how we go Smiley
Dang! Now she get's HALF !!! Grin
He's getting off easy if she only gets half... usually it's more like, "what's mine is hers and what's hers is also hers."
3568  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382 on: July 16, 2014, 01:08:12 PM
no info on the website (i dont have a ups account) about shipping yet, and i ordered 4 units in the first 10 minutes.

I trust bitmain is working hard to ship, just hoping my units come in on friday
Did you try the "track by reference" trick on the UPS site?

My S3s are to be delivered by end of day tomorrow, they shipped on the 15th.  Bitmain finally updated the website and my order shows as shipped there as well.

EDIT: My order was placed 14:01:44 on 6/30.
3569  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is the p. computer i'm buying capable to mine or not ? on: July 16, 2014, 01:03:15 PM
Is it capable of mining?  Yes.  Will it earn you anything?  No.

I'm really beginning to love these kinds of questions... they're all variants of, "Hey, I want to get rich, but I'm not willing to invest any of my own time or money and I'm not willing to learn anything about it.  Is this Bitcoin thing the answer to my prayers?"

3571  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: how to mine bitcoin without a pool? on: July 16, 2014, 12:52:08 PM
If you solo mine with small amount of power, it would be like winning the lottery. Some people have turned old USB hardware thats not profitable as a miner, and turned them into a "lottery ticket". Its possible but not likely. You would be better off join a pool.
I'm one of those.  I have 5 Antminer U2 sticks that I use to solo mine.  I haven't solved a block yet, but the cost to run the things is minimal (they are controlled by a raspberry pi) so I keep it going.  Chances are exceedingly slim that I will solve a block, but why not let them hash away and try?  The earnings on a pool are dust anyway.

I'm thinking of doing something similar.  Do we have any recent reports of low hash miners who got lucky?  I was thinking of mining with very little, just for the heck of it, like a lottery ticket.  But, I'd like to have some hope, in terms of someone else who's gotten lucky recently with very little hashrate.  I'm sure it must happen all the time...

PS what are requirements for Antminer U2 sticks?  Can I run just on a nothing-special laptop?
The Antminer U2 sticks are pretty much plug and play.  Both cgminer and bfgminer support them out of the box.  On windows, you might have to install some drivers (I'm not sure since I don't run Windows boxes), but I remember reading something about Zadig... at any rate, if you're going the rPi route, it's exceeding simple:

1) Install your favorite mining software
2) plug the U2 into USB port
3) start mining software
4) Pray that you hit Smiley

Personally, I mine directly to the Bitcoin core running on another machine on my network (it also runs my local p2pool node).  However, a number of people use "bit solo" pool so they don't need to be running a local node.  The pool is obviously less setup; however, you have to trust that the operator is actually going to pay you out the 25BTC.  So far, they've found 1 block and indeed the miner was paid, so they've got a 100% track record.
3572  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: A case study in entry-level mining on: July 16, 2014, 12:43:30 PM
What I Should Have Done

With the benefit of hindsight, it has become increasingly apparent that I should have just held my original 13 BTC. I would have multiplied my investment tenfold.

BUT it's not too late. I have bought 3 BTC @ AUD$695 each from a trader on http://localbitcoins.com and sent them to three paper wallets worth 1 BTC each. The plan is to hold them in a safe for a year, and then see what they are worth.

My prediction: they will at least double in value Smiley

PS: If you use a web wallet, be sure to set up Two-Factor Authentication!
Where's the fun in buying and holding?  In all seriousness, I've read through the thread and you had a number of unfortunate incidents throughout your mining experience, which more than likely impacted your ROI.  Anyway, best of luck with the new speculation approach Smiley
3573  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [600 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: July 16, 2014, 12:38:30 AM
Sorry what is this 3 day PPLNS period?  Is that how p2pool works?

Yes, that's how p2pool works.  The sharechain counts the previous 8640 shares for payment when a block is solved.  Every share is about 30 seconds, so that's where the 3 days comes from.
3574  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin calculation profitability on: July 15, 2014, 09:59:10 PM
Hey:)

Was just wondering how I can calculate whether the bitcoin miner I'm going to buy is profitable or not. Also, what sites do you guys reccomend for calculating this?

Here is the info about the miner I'm going to buy.
NB! I will buy TWO of them.

This is the info for one machine:
Name: sp30 yukon
Seller: Gawminers.com
Watt consumption: 2500 watt from the wall
Hash rate: 6 th/s
Electricity costs: 0.04$ per kw/h

If there are any other info that you need that I haven't listed, please let me know.
Also, is a 35% difficult increase per month realistic? If not, what percentage per month is?

Thank you guys, you're awesome!:)

-Messia

There are a number of calculators out there that will help you out.  For example, if you input an expected difficulty increase of 20% with a 0% pool fee, $11000 hardware costs, $0.04/kwh, 5000 watts and a start date 60 days from now, and 12TH/s... it's a negative 9BTC return.  Now, if we change up those parameters a bit to be a 10% jump in difficulty, you're at a positive 10BTC return.  Also, if we change the parameters to have BTC priced at $2000 a coin, and leave the difficulty at 20%... you'll see a 4.66BTC return.

That's only 1 calculator.  You can drastically change the outcome depending on the parameters you use.  Take a look in the Mining Speculation forums to see some discussions regarding ROI.
3575  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Please help me to start up the sgminer on UBUNTU on: July 15, 2014, 09:27:43 PM
First, just try to start the software without using a config file... pass the parameters in manually.  Also, just start the thing with the most basic options, don't bother with all of that stuff you've got in your config file for now.  For example:

Code:
./sgminer -k x13mod -o stratum+tcp://launch2.suchpool.pw:3362 -u beki.begi -p xxx

If that works, then the problem is in your config file.

Also, in your config file... why are some of your parameters quoted and others not?  Example:

"intensity": "17",
"failover-only" : true,

Is it supposed to be that the boolean values are not quoted?

Of course, you should probably do what the error says and start it again with -T to get more details...
3576  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 15, 2014, 07:19:16 PM
Hooray!

All 40 AntMiner S3s we ordered will be delivered on Thursday and then shipped same-day to anyone who bought through us on Amazon!

For reference, our order times were as follows:
30 units: 2014-06-30 14:03:31
10 units: 2014-06-30 14:10:42

Ps, there's 2 left if anyone's interested  Wink
I almost pulled the trigger to grab them, but a bit too high on the price.  Don't suppose you'd take 1.6BTC for them both?
3577  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN] Spondoolies-Tech SP30 - Specs: 6TH/s + 0.46W/GH on: July 15, 2014, 07:14:42 PM
Oh thanks for letting me know that. I didn't know they were able to do that with a FW update. That makes me more confident to get an SP30.

Bring on the price war!
Yeah... if you've got an SP10 and are running it on 110V power, you can get rid of the PSU limit.  You have to SSH into the miner and just do the following:

Code:
cd /etc
touch mg_ignore_110_fcc

You can see the tech blog post here on the SP-Tech site: http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/blogs/technical-blog/14433873-version-1-4-2

Hope this helps... and gets you some extra hashing, too Smiley

Pretty slick little tool.  I just used it and compared it to my actual results.  It's pretty close.
3579  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Asic for 1/2 a bitcoin? on: July 15, 2014, 05:47:53 PM
I was thinking of cashing out my cex.io and buying a rig. My budget is .50 btc.
What is the best thing i can get for that, asic scypt seems more bang for the buck, but I would appreciate other opinions
Used S1s, Rockminer Rboxes, Gridseed orbs, furies, USB miners...

The scrypt miners are really pretty much in their infancy.  Gridseed only produced the first orbs a few months ago.  Since then, a ton of options have come out, and many more are in the works.

At any rate, with a budget of 0.5BTC you're not going to get a whole lot, but there are still items to choose.
3580  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Would it be better if I buy a asic scrypt miner or cloud mining? on: July 15, 2014, 05:34:57 PM
Cloud hashing outfits exist to make profits for themselves, otherwise they would go out of business very quickly.  Assuming it's a legit business with actual hardware, and not a ponzi scheme, they need to recoup their capital investment, pay for power, pay for cooling, pay for infrastructure, pay for employees, etc.  If some hardware mines 1BTC a day, do you honestly think they're going to sell you a contract for less than 1BTC?  In other words, why would they sell you a dollar for 75 cents?
