361  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Announce] Project Quixote - BitShares, BitNames and 'BitMessage' on: September 07, 2013, 05:29:58 AM
Hi QuantPlus,

Glad to see you here. I enjoyed your posts over on the Ripple forum. I'm studying trading, with a preference for Nassim Taleb, Benoit Mandelbrot, and Edgar Peters, currently reading Taleb's Dynamic Hedging.

The Fractal Market Hypothesis and Cauchy Distribution make a lot more sense to me than the Efficient Market Hypothesis, which relies on Normal Distribution (a special case) Adding GARCH to EMH to try to make it work seems Ptolemaic, like adding retrograde orbits to explain observed planetary motion in an Earth centered model of the solar system.

Do you have any suggestions on books for trading? Also, what's your take on Taleb's approach.
I'm interested in automated bot trading.

Sorry if this post is drifting OT but thought the thread could use a bump to "keep it on the front page".

Mining would be a good store of value for excess power production in any alternative energy system with variable output based on environmental conditions - solar, wind, tidal, wave generation.

Another question, can I safely add a new address to the same Bitcoin-QT wallet instance to receive Bitcoin since I dedicated my existing only address to buy Mastercoin?
365  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: OFFICIAL LAUNCH: New Protocol Layer Starting From “The Exodus Address” on: September 05, 2013, 07:18:10 PM
I checked my Bitcoin-QT wallet address used for Mastercoin, got 500.0 purchased, missing fractional Mastercoin, about .719 for about .00729 BTC on second transaction. I tried copy and paste transaction ID fro wallet, to get details on both transactions, got

"Sorry, it seems my blockchain is still catching up or the transaction does not exist."

Any thoughts?

I just have a major problem with other people deciding for me what I should see to promote their own political agendas. If this had been buried earlier, I wouldn't have seen it, and I've been very interested in Bitshares from its beginning announcement, along with all the other p2p exchange proposals.
368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation Board Election Details Announced on: September 02, 2013, 08:44:51 PM
As such, we need someone who will engage fully with the US government, not someone who is saying 'trying to implement it into the regulatory framework of the legacy financial system is an absurd' and hope that the banks who are refusing to open accounts for bitcoin businesses understand, or that the momentum will pick up enough in isolation that it becomes inevitable - it won't.

I believe Joerg's coming at this from a multi-decade cypherpunk perspective where he's witnessed time and again that you can try all you want to get all your ducks in a row and proactively ask the powers that be to regulate you, and still get screwed. At least when it comes to U.S. interests, for whom maintaining the dollar hegemony is a categorical imperative that is not open to negotiation.

As Jon Matonis aptly put this, "Doug Jackson of e-gold knows you can have the rules changed on you at any time." ...and: "We can see from the case against digital money provider e-gold that an efficient challenger to the provision of a stable monetary unit will not be permitted."

That is, e-gold tried to do everything "right", with what in hindsight was an almost pathetic naivety and trust in the rule of law and justice in the U.S., and they still got screwed over big time. (Indeed, as Jeffrey Tucker puts it, "Bitcoin is karma for e-gold"; which speaks to Joerg's point that sometimes the next generation can learn from the previous one's naivety.) Joerg and Jon Matonis clearly see eye-to-eye on this question.

As you no doubt have heard, Mt.Gox are presently getting a good taste, to the tune of a cool $5M, of how it feels when the rules get changed on you retroactively. It's a safe bet they won't be the last to learn that lesson, regardless of any and all lobbying efforts to the contrary.

Couldn't have explained it better myself.

Very active threads such as this should not be moved, period. This has consistently been at or near the top for the last few days since it started, as has Mastercoin. I could see categorizing it when activity and interest die down, but not now.
370  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Is Bitcoin over-paying for Hash-Power Security? on: September 02, 2013, 07:00:51 AM
The random encryption of a network encryption algorithm should have plenty of entropy for PoW with no way to predict the work for the next block.

You are not THE MARKET. Stop trying to be God.

This thread does seem to favor picking winners and losers to an extent.

My personal favorite of productive mining is carrying network traffic and contributing hardware resources, to build an alternative to the internet, a wireless/wired community network which also functions as a distributed cloud server.  The mining and coin generation could be tied to encryption of traffic for the network, earned when data is requested from a router by others, spent when a user requests data from other routers than his own.

No I already showed in another thread how this violates the principle of input entropy that is necessary. (If you need to the link to my logic, I can dig it up for you?)

Don't recall discussion, please link. Thanks.
372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If the eye of Sauron is upon you, GTFO of Mordor! on: September 02, 2013, 05:11:45 AM
I am clearly taking a side on this issue: lobbying for Bitcoin and trying to implement it into the regulatory framework of the legacy financial system is an absurd, unreasonable and irresponsible waste of resources.

So, I challenge each of you who voted for 'more is always better' to either withdraw your vote and post how much you would pay or select one of the other options.   Either that, or post here and explain why more is always better.

I chose more is better because all of the other options involved pegging to an arbitrary amount of fiat currency backed by government debt. It would be better to keep everything internal to its own coin, Bitshares.

When I first heard of Bitcoin, when it was selling for 10 cents, a major reason I didn't think it would go anywhere was the mining seemed like a silly 'make work' type process which just consumed electricity and didn't do anything useful. I would still rather see the effort go to something productive.

Mining does offer an incentive to early adopters to risk resources and time to expand the network.

At last count, he spent .37 BTC spamming blockchain.info at .01 BTC a pop, plus about $10 USD on the domain, so he has some expenses to recoup. .02 BTC is quite a dip from 1 BTC, seems like it would have been better to try some intermediate points.
375  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: OFFICIAL LAUNCH: New Protocol Layer Starting From “The Exodus Address” on: September 01, 2013, 06:57:11 PM
I'm impressed he got a nice looking site up that quickly. It's obviously not an official Mastercoin Foundation site, and spamming blockchain.info with messages to promote the site was pretty obnoxious, so I'd be surprised if it is Mich's, though his artwork he posted here is on it.

The rate was 99 Mastercoins per Bitcoin yesterday, be nice if they do sell at 1:1 now - quite an ROI for a 24 hour investment!

Overall, other than the spamming, I wouldn't call it cheating - it's just an offer to resell. Curious how the Mastercoin transfer works, since the wiki mentions it isn't completely safe at this point.
376  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: OFFICIAL LAUNCH: New Protocol Layer Starting From “The Exodus Address” on: September 01, 2013, 03:34:47 AM
I really wanted to be a part of the early bird special.
Thank you, - Patel
Patel,
Don't worry, just like any other currency/security there are soon to be open markets.  You can buy mastercoin on buymastercoin.com  and other exchanges set up to trade mastercoin.   Of course, at a premium in view of the fact that early investors were more diligent than you and bought into a great project before the deadline.  There is a premium for everything - I guess.

How will sellers transfer Mastercoin to buyers? Will there be a new or modified wallet based on bitcoin-qt?
377  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Wanting to create a secret... project on: September 01, 2013, 03:25:47 AM
Hey guys. I am reluctant to share this here as I am almost sure someone will snatch it and make a killing, but I'm hoping instead we can work together.

Elevator pitch:

You ever dread turning on the grill to make a steak? So tedious and messy, right? So here's this service called BitcoinGrill[1], you put your meat in a Ziploc[2], into an envelope[3], and mail it to:

/---- Sample Address ----/
134 Headquarters Street,
Wherever,
Canada
/---- End of Sample Address ----/

And in a short amount of time[4], you get a package at your front door (UPS, or standard mail if you're on a budget) with the same steak, only grilled. With all the spices you specified. Where do I choose those options? Good question:

BitcoinBrill.com offers a web interface where members can choose cooking options like Rare/Well done, and can check off spices, seasonings, marinade, everything.
In the future we can even make apps - people love mobile things.

There will be push notifications about your steak as it cooks. Photos - we'll get some tech-saavy grillmasters.

Fast, convenient.

We can crowdfund a small warehouse with 10 barbecues and some propane to get started.
Haven't run the numbers - but I'm sure they'll work out.

Target market: People who eat steaks (everyone - vegetarians) AND People that have Bitcoins AND People that have a Mobile phone or computer with internet access.

[1] Name can change: Maybe BitGrill, or GrillMySteakForBitcoins.co, or GrillMySteak.com or ImGoingToMailYouASteakAndYouGrillItKThxBye.com
[2] Or No-Name, or alternative brands.
[3] Parcels allowed for multiple steaks.
[4] 1-2 Weeks depending on mailing options.

I would pack it in a bubble wrap lined package for insulation and add a packet of U-235 to keep it bacteria-free and warm for delivery. Wink

Does the minor fee have to be 0.005? I added only 0.001 (which happened automatically).

My client, Bitcoin QT .8.3 required 0.0001 BTC after upgrade from .8.21, which wanted .0005.

I also have newbie question. I just sent Bitcoin from Bitcoin-QT to address 1EXoDusjGwvnjZUyKkxZ4UHEf77z6A5S4P with message "mastercoin". Will I be issued any kind of receipt or have any kind of proof of ownership of the purchased Mastercoin?
