361  Bitcoin / Mining / Thinking about installing Linux on: November 28, 2013, 11:28:06 PM
Ubantu 12.04 to be exact...

I'm really familiar with the world of Windows, less in the world of OSX and not at all in the world of Linux.

I've got a current machine that mines BTC and Litecoins so I'd like to maintain the same functionality in Linux. Anything that I should be aware of? Will the "out of the box" drivers work for my mobo or do I have to jump through hoops to find them? Its a fairly new ASRock/Intel board if it matters.

I dunno, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Experiences?? Thanks all!

Just got my other 6 Chili's online... Flashed them, power cycled them and up and hashing in BFGminer.

I bought two of these Sunzi racks from CrazyGuy. Transaction was smooth as silk.

I brought them home and plugged them into a PC thats got other miners on it and it found the devices to be Bitforce SHA256's, downloaded its own drivers and all was well. Started BFGminer and all was working as noted. I wasnt getting quite 200gh's at first but it came around after a while.

I did end up flashing them to the latest firmware version and they seemed to speed up a bit.

This is the wattage usage from one rack.

Heres the rack.

Couple of screenshots of BFGminer

FWIW I second guessed this purchase after seeing that email from KNC. But, I thought that I could save a few BTC now and hope to get the miner from KNC 2nd quarter next year or spend the BTC NOW and get the hashing power NOW.

I'm very happy with my decision to buy now. I will be buying more from CrazyGuy for sure!!

Hah, I had the exact opposite issue. I would have so many issues with Linux and when I put my (Currently 34) Chilis on Windows 7 64x I had much less issues if any.

The Hubs seems to get hung up sometimes and I noticed that usually if you have no USB Errors (Device Manager) there won't be any HW Errors. Occasionally for whatever reason windows doesn't like the chili plugged into a particular slot on a hub and I have to just move it and the Chili is seen fine. All this has to be done prior to starting the mining program.

Once you have them running though it's smooth sailing Smiley

Since I've never tried Linux mining I cant speak to the stability or ease of use, just repeating what was told to me.

Looks like Firmware updates are fixing my issues. So far three have updated and are working fine. I'm going to keep going.

Might be totally off on this but do you have them on unpowered USB hubs?

If you are getting nothing but HW Errors it is likely due to your USB Hub/Or you started the mining program while the Miners were still booting up.

Occasionally I'll have one that just causes issues out of the group (never all of them) and a quick reboot and changing the port the USB is plugged into fixes it.

I've tried them on a powered hub, connected straight to mobo USB and now connected to expansion USB.

I'm hoping that the firmware is/was the issue. The guys I bought these from said they mine via linux and they have been spot on in that OS. I could understand Win7 going whacky with these things.

As to your question about how many I'm running, one at a time until I get it working then I move on to the next one. So far... LOL!

Maybe with the new firmware I can start moving on.  Grin

OK, so all the way back to post #586. Firmware is stated as being 1.4 from the looks of things?

I've got a board that, again assuming I'm doing this right, the firmware flashing program claimed to have 1.0 on it. I thought I flashed it with 1.4 but after a power cycle the board still shows as having 1.0.

What am I doing wrong?

FWIW, I'm having a HELL of a time getting these things to hash in Win764. I had them working on a computer at home but so far three computers in my office dont like these things. They all get detected by the OS as BitForce256, windows does its thing and installs the FTDI driver and all seems well. I start BFG, they hash for a split second and ALL go dead???

Change the driver to WinUSB via Zadig and start CGMiner and they all do the same thing (by all I mean all 12 that I have).

Anyone have any ideas?

Could be firmware but I cant seem to get this flash procedure down right...
The current firmware is 14e (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zoewijezzhfl3bs/Chili14e.hex), and I believe it should show up as 1.2.14e Version 14d and earlier reported as 1.0.0 because of the way old versions of cgminer handled the division of work between the 1.0.X and 1.2.X BFL firmwares, so we had to report as 1.0.x

For the issue you're having, when you say they all go dead what do you mean? Do they go zombie, or put out hardware errors? Have you tried running just one as a test before adding more in?
Also, what version of cgminer are you running?

Thanks for the push in the right direction MrTeal! By going dead I mean they put out tons of hardware errors and eventually BFG and CG both claim that they are turned off. Theres no real heat coming off of them either so I believe that they are in fact off.

Using 3.8.3 of CGMiner and 3.7.0 of BFG.

I plan on buying some ZWave appliance modules and a VeraLite for my office when I get moved. I've going to put each Avalon on one of these devices so when I see one of them slow down on my phone app (BTCGuild) I can power cycle the piece of crap.

i think 12 btc is a bit pricey but reasonable compared to another idiot asking for 20+ btc each... lol...

anyway if this op refuses escrow i'd be highly cautious...

Damn, the market price of these things went up like crazy. 12 btc is $9756 ($813/btc)!! That's twice what they sold for.

seriously, no escrow, no sale. Way too risky.

So I'm curious about something.

Those of you that have Avalon's connected to a host PC, do they still lock up and hang for no reason or is that issue gone? I had another one go offline about an hour ago. When I got to the site that I have them working at the locked up miner's LED's were both on (yellow-solid and green-solid). The miner was also very hot as though it was still mining.

Power cycle fixed it.

I'm backing out. After thinking about it I dont like the seller not handling the customs side of things.

Isnt the default IP for the Avalon 192.168.0.100?

You might be logging into something else on your network.

The Avalon default IP address is 192.168.0.100
The OpenWRT failsafe address is 192.168.1.1

You will have to pay attention to your laptop's address and also netmask during this process.

Didnt know the router has its own failsafe address. Good information.

I might be interested if you'd be willing to escrow.

I'm in Dallas Texas USA if that matters.

watch out, he is a new user, use ESCROW !

This. +1

I'll take whats left after these guys are done.

Escrow?

Hello all,

I have been mining with a BFL 30Gh/S system and just bought an Avalon 4 Module. Tried setting it up at the office and could not get it to work with the Wifi.

I accidentally deleted the LAN config and brought it home to try and connect to my home network.

I set my Mac up to the 192.168.0.101 ip and tried using my browser to connect.... nothing - it times out.

I tried ssh from laptop - still nothing.

Is there a hard reset to restore to factory settings?

Did I brick the WR703N? If so, is my only hope to take the unit apart, solder the wire to the connection and reset?

Help!

There is a hard reset procedure, the user ckolivas describes it earlier in this thread. The instructions are also available from OpenWRT and TP-LINK on their respective websites. Note that this does not restore the Avalon factory configuration, but the base installation for the WR703N to function as a router. You will need to donwload and flash Avalon config (erroneously referred to as "firmware") from either ckolivas web repository or the Avalon wiki.

I found the post by ckolivas.

1. I set my computer to 192.168.1.2
2. I powered on the Avalon Unit and waited for the blue router light to blink and then hit the reset switch so the light blinks fast
3. Plugged in the ethernet cables
4. Tried to ssh to 192.168.1.1 - Connection timed out

I can ping and I get response.

If I telnet to 192.168.1.2 i get @root(none)

Any ideas?  I'll happily pay anyone who can get my minier back up!

Thanks!

I've been running mine off USB cable to my PC for months.

AWESOME! I'm totally going to try this when I get my miners moved! Thanks for posting this information.

Well, my Minis are still giving me issues. They still freeze up a couple times a day even with the newest firmware. The orange light stays lit, and I can't access the web interface once it stops submitting shares. Interestingly it still pulls 600-650W, even if it hasn't submitted a share in hours. Does anyone else see a similar issue?

I'm planning on opening them up and just hooking the controller board into my mining rig. Other than removing the 5V power jumper, is there anything else that needs to be done to run the Avalon controller on a standard cgminer binary?

FWIW, I had zero luck hooking up my Avalon's to a PC in my office. I too was getting tired of the constant lockups and the full power drag upon that lockup.

Some one here advised that I set them to restart cgminer every few hours and reboot every 10-12 hours.

If you do get it working please post here. I'd rather the Avalons be connected to a PC anyway.
