361  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is BTC cash an altcoin? on: August 01, 2017, 04:43:23 PM
..., are both modifications of the original.  Grin so that means the original bitcoin is gone (?)  Huh

Your not the first one to ponder over questions like that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus

After lurking for a while I have found that you  get more political and ideological based answers than scientific ones (maybe not in in the more technical oriented subforums). So I suppose you could just make up your own mind on what is an "altcoin", if any, of those two. It is really not more than a label anyway.

I'm with BrewMaster's interpretation re: which of the two will be labeled alt. Majority versus the minority thing. Still, with the old "tweaked" resulting in these two chains to watch, which chain will be more successful? Perhaps it's still too early to tell since regular transactions have not yet fully resumed. And the timetable did say more action coming up on November. Maybe we'll be seeing more action in the coming days

Edit:

meant to say -- more action coming up til November...
362  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is BCC an altcoin? on: August 01, 2017, 03:36:45 PM
Yes because it is a divergence from the current bitcoin so would mean it is an alternative version of bitcoin so altcoin it is, regardless if more people support it and it becomes the leader it is still an altcoin, in my eyes anyway.

this has somewhat fazed me as well... the original bitcoin didn't have segwit and didn't have larger blocks, so, the bitcoin running now, which has segwit, and the forked one - bitcoin cash, whose blocksize was increased, are both modifications of the original.  Grin so that means the original bitcoin is gone (?)  Huh
363  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's going on??? on: August 01, 2017, 02:56:37 PM
we will see a BCC block in the next 3 years?

big fail in progress

if the nodes are crashing, epic fail there. but bch needs blocks larger than 1mb to start their chain, right? there aren't enough transactions to fill their block since a large number of transactions this day and the next few hours have been halted. if theymos says the coast is clear and we can now resume btc transactions, perhaps that's when we'll really see some action?
364  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's going on??? on: August 01, 2017, 02:03:34 PM
so it isn't moving forward? someone said the abc nodes are banning each other?
365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's going on??? on: August 01, 2017, 01:55:07 PM
been gone a long time...catching up on what's happening. so what does it mean when bitcoin abc's node is behind others?
366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Confidence Returning to Bitcoin? on: July 18, 2017, 01:29:13 PM
I suppose confidence is returning after today's news that miners have begun running the Segwit2x software and China-based Bitmain announced in twitter that all their bitcoin mining pools will start running Segwit2x... But there's still anxiety over bitcoin's split so it's still too early too tell if confidence has in fact returned. Bitcoin's case is different from litecoin. There weren't any fears of a split in ltc so I suppose price surged. But I think it's still too early to tell that bitcoin will follow the same trend even after initiating segwit2x today.
367  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it too late to buy bitcoin? on: July 15, 2017, 05:59:55 AM
Just make sure to visit bitcoin.org for important announcements. They have a page regarding a potential network disruption event starting July 31st and they have recommendations about making transactions and what to do before, during and after the event https://bitcoin.org/en/alert/2017-07-12-potential-split
368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buy more bitcoin or wait for August 1st? on: July 15, 2017, 05:49:09 AM
I suppose it's best to stay tuned to bitcoin.org for important announcements. This one for instance:

Quote
The Bitcoin block chain, which is a record of all Bitcoin transactions to date, relies on a network of thousands of Bitcoin nodes running Bitcoin software. On Tue Aug 01 2017 08:00:00 GMT+0800 (Malay Peninsula Standard Time), the Bitcoin block chain may experience what is known as a chain split. This is when a portion of Bitcoin’s nodes run software that another portion of nodes are not fully compatible with. As a result, some nodes may propagate confirmed transactions that other nodes may not accept or recognize. This may result in unreliable confirmation scoring for an unknown length of time. This means that any bitcoins you receive during this period could disappear from your wallet or be a type of bitcoin that other people will not accept as payment, until the situation is resolved.

Preparation and more here https://bitcoin.org/en/alert/2017-07-12-potential-split
369  Local / Pilipinas / Re: Ano ang pwede natin gawin para dumami ang bitcoin users sa Pinas? on: July 13, 2017, 02:28:12 PM
one step at a time. umpisahan mo sa family and friends and from there, lalawak at dadami ang users. kung lahat tayo ganun ang gagawin, makakatulong tayo sa pagpapalaganap ng crypto asset usage sa pilipinas. paanong umpisahan? pakita mo bitcoin/altcoin wallet mo sa mobile device. maiintriga yun then introduce mo na ang crypto. i'm sure maraming tanong yung friends at family mo. from there, by word of mouth, kakalat na yan.
370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are we moving towards the Global Crypto Currency Depression? on: July 12, 2017, 01:54:31 PM
As per coinmarketcap website, we have 970 crypto currencies available at this point of time. If we sort the list by clicking on Change (24h) column, I can see that price of only 13 coins were increased in last 24 hours. Rest all coins are facing the depreciation.

Even bitcoin price is standing at 2359 USD at this point. Are we moving towards a Global Crypto Currency Depression? What's causing this massive depreciation?

That is true. There are so many crypto currencies at this point. But that doesn't mean each of those currencies doesn't have a chance to rise. Maybe there are top crypto currencies that is really soaring higher but those currencies have also experienced a depreciation. This wont take long. Crypto cyrrencies have so much to offer for us.

There are abandoned coins in that list. Only a few are actually active and are being developed so I wouldn't call this event a depression yet. I suppose call it that when trading volume for all drops to about 50 percent and market shifts to cashing out fiat rather than shifting to other cryptos . That hasn't happened yet and it's just that it's natural to see highs and lows in trading. When we see lows, it doesn't necessarily mean a a longstanding slump in all of the active crypto assets. The values projected are in terms of bitcoin and in usd mostly, and so, when the value of bitcoin dips, there is a corresponding dip in the value of alts that have little or no change in their price for the past 24 hours. Some alts manage to breakout from their former price and so they don't reflect a dip in price even if bitcoin value drops.

The crypto asset/blockchain revolution is just starting. It's something still considered as novel, and more and more groups and nations are beginning to do research and learn more about it, and they're trying to find applications for it. Am looking forward to the progression of cryptos. Hope you are too  Wink
371  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin die soon? on: July 11, 2017, 03:50:49 PM
I don't think that bitcoin will die.... but it could split as per the outline of the main events that could unify or divide bitcoin (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-10/bitcoin-risks-splintering-as-civil-war-enters-critical-month):

Quote
By July 21: SegWit2x software is released and supporters begin using it.

July 21 to July 31: The community monitors how many miners deploy SegWit2x:
If more than 80 percent deploy it consistently, that should signal community-wide adoption of SegWit and the avoidance of a split, at least for now.
But if a majority do not deploy, expect anxiety within the community to grow as the focus shifts to the Aug. 1 deadline.

Aug. 1: UASF is deployed by its supporters, who begin checking if bitcoin transactions are compliant with SegWit.
If a majority of miners still do not deploy SegWit2x or otherwise accept SegWit, and if UASF supporters do not back down, then two versions of bitcoin’s blockchain could come into existence: a UASF-backed one where only SegWit transactions are recognized, and another where all trades -- SegWit and non-SegWit -- are recognized.
If a split occurs, bitcoin will likely begin existing on both blockchains in parallel, resulting in two versions of the cryptocurrency. Expect traders to quickly re-price the value of both, likely leading to massive volatility.

so based on these, bitcoin won't die but could split and one chain or both might have devalued coins until one chain becomes more superior than the other.... and so, we'll have to wait and see what'll happen next, just hope for the best.
372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alts fall, Bitcoin falls ... where is the money going? on: July 11, 2017, 01:28:58 PM
They're probably being converted to fiat maybe until all the buzz on bitcoin's forking event settles and certainty regarding bitcoin's future is back(?)
373  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Summer Sale Now On!! on: July 11, 2017, 12:50:24 PM
Summer sale mechanics, please? Where to buy, when is this, how to buy, what to do to get that sale?

There isn't any information about where and how to grab this supposed sale, so is there one really? Maybe there isn't really a sale but poster is probably referring to bitcoin price dipping because of panic selling in exchanges....

On bitcoin, how low would it go? Good time to buy before price skyrockets after segwit2x is activated!
374  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: +2 WEEKS ONLINE ★ BlockWake ★ DOUBLE BITCOINS IN 100 HOURS ☆ Automatic System ☆ on: July 10, 2017, 04:14:14 PM
Looks interesting.... well, if your tolerance for risk is extremely high, and you don't mind gambling your bitcoins, this seems like an interesting portal to "double" your btc. But bitcoin is on a downtrend..... unless you're trading and placing really good trading positions, then the portal may be earning.... but if you aren't and you're just relying on new entries then..... how do you sustain the program and still manage to pay investors on time?
375  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it too late to buy bitcoin? on: July 10, 2017, 04:00:05 PM
When bitcoin price hit $3000 and there was speculation spreading over at facebook that the price would hit $4000 or more, three of my friends bought some with their eyes fixed on their short term future gains. The price didn't stay there very long and unfortunately for my friends, the price tumbled and to this day, failed to break the $3k high.

If you're into bitcoin only for the short term gain, then you might end up like my friends who up til now are disappointed at the price! But I think that it is never too late to buy bitcoin and that it'll soon recover and break it's most recent high. And when it does, I suppose my friends would celebrate their gains and you would too, if you decide to buy some bitcoin now. The price is still moving down... some say it'll hit $1000. I can't read charts the way more seasoned bitcoin traders do. But if you feel like buying at this point, and you've got your emotions under control, then give it a go and get yourself some  Wink

People are just so anxious right now about bitcoin's supposed fate -- I know I am -- both anxious and expectant on the results of bitcoin's forking. But still, I think bitcoin's price will still surge after this so called judgment day. Bitcoin is still the gateway to the world of crypto. It is more widespread than any other crypto because it has been circulating longer than any other crypto asset. It won't just die out like others are fearing it would  Cheesy That's just me thinking out loud though...  Wink
376  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why BILL GATES do not USE Bitcoin? on: July 10, 2017, 03:04:27 PM
Bill Gates stated that bitcoin is better than currency:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6KRp91YAw8

I'm sure he owns bitcoin.

I think -- maybe -- he does have some, probably for study, because of his interest in securing future financial transactions using blockchain tech.

He may be thinking about it as some sort of investment like maybe creating one which is regulated -- based on his stance via interviews, and his involvement in the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance.

Based on his interview, he does like the idea of a technology that allows users to make relatively inexpensive and fast transactions but has some reservations with bitcoin in terms of pseudonymity concerns. Hence, his involvement in developing private blockchains on the ethereum platform ( https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/238103 and http://fortune.com/2017/02/28/ethereum-jpmorgan-microsoft-alliance/ )

377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin just an asset ? on: July 07, 2017, 02:36:18 PM
In fact, the currency is an asset with the highest liquidity, so if bitcoin becomes sufficiently liquid, it will be on par with traditional currencies.

i agree - currencies are assets with the highest liquidity, and these fund experts are still unsure about how to define and categorize crypto assets because of its novelty. they want to refer to it as "asset" because they all agree that bitcoin is something valuable yet despite it being used as a medium for purchasing goods and services, they would not refer to it as a "currency". maybe because it's in a category of its own  Wink I read somewhere that bitcoin has been categorized as a commodity like gold, oil, silver, copper, and the like which can also be used in exchange for goods and services. i suppose referring to bitcoin as an asset is fine and is better than currency which is prone to inflation burn.

379  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs altcoins because ... on: July 06, 2017, 02:28:10 PM
bitcoin needs altcoins because bitcoin needs help from other source of crypto currencies. if bitcoin itself is just running in the online market, then other users will just think that its boring if it just bitcoin who is running in the online world. maybe they would choose other investment rather than bitcoin so thay can play in the market.

Bitcoins and alts need each other. In trading, for example, it helps with the liquidity of both, then there's gaining from price differences, so trading with bitcoin and alts makes cryptocurrency trading exciting. Other than that, they help each other carry out a deeper level of psuedonymity since it won't just be bitcoin addresses that are dealt with but with altcoin addresses as well. More layers of pseudonymity is carried out, so it won't be that easy to track an identity tied to a certain bitcoin or altcoin address.....
380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Afraid of August One? on: July 06, 2017, 03:00:17 AM
There is some degree of anxiety about bitcoin's fate come August 1st. But there's some degree of eagerness that something really good will come out of this development. After all, the fork is aimed at improving bitcoin and not downgrading it, so results of the fork should further bitcoin price and by then, anyone with bitcoins will have gained more (that is, if they're on the successful side of the fork).
