3741  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are small BTC transactions essentially “Wasted”? on: March 11, 2021, 02:37:07 PM
If I receive a very small amount of BTC, like $1 worth, is that BTC essentially wasted? Because to my knowledge, to send that BTC I would need to include that transaction as an input, which incurs a transaction fee. One online calculator, I used estimated the cost of an input as $5, which would mean it is not even worth spending the $1 I received?

Seems like this may be a problem as small transactions overtime cause the number of spendable bitcoins to decrease?

You "may" consider it wasted if we look at it from that perspective. It depends on what's your perspective is.

Firstly, bitcoin wasn't meant for micro transactions. The Lightning Network can be used to do micro transactions.
Transferring $1 over the LN is not wasted since it would consume a low amount of fees.
Transferring $1 over the bitcoin network is meaningless since you will end up paying more in the fees itself.

Again, it depends on your perspective. If you want to stay pseudonymous and don't bother about the fees then transferring $1 is essentially not wasted.

This is a pure act of pump and dump and it is a well known strategy by big whales to manipulate the market and earn profits out of it.
They create a FOMO in the market and spread the word by signalling groups and social media pages such as reddit, twitter, facebook etc.. and then start selling once their threshold has been met.
But people these days have become aware of such dumps and are less frequent to fall for such FOMOs.
3743  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: POLL: Have You Ever Used the Lightning Network? on: March 08, 2021, 04:56:12 PM
Is Electrum not so good for Lightning payments or are the other wallets too good for them ?
I haven't tried LN on Electrum. It requires you to manually open a channel, and after trying that on several wallets, I came to the conclusion that it's much easier to use a wallet that does everything for me.

So by the term "does everything for me" you mean it automatically opens a channel for you right ?
Even if it does it automatically, you would still have to pay the fees for opening the channel right ?
3744  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Don't stay on with a wrong trade on: March 08, 2021, 04:36:16 PM
Some trades we take are in wrong direction but because we want to be hopeful that it will come back to profit, we allow it and it close against us. If we keep doing this, it is the exact opposite attitude of someone that wants to keep their initial capital.

There are steps you can take to reduce the loss before you lose every thing or it get to your stop loss and such is

1. Stop the trade: This is very good but difficult for many traders to do it but if you do that, you have potential loss that you have saved.

2. Use of stoploss all the time: This help your losses to be minimal.

3. Try to adjust your stoploss: You can do this if your trade is already in profit and you suspect that it is going back to your entry price, so you can take your stoploss to entry and all the order to run for profit or it stops at your entry.

That's the story for most of the traders I guess. No matter how good of a trader we are, we always hope to maximize our profits.
This is where many of us fail and wait a little longer in the hope to rake back profits but end up losing them.
This is why a dedicated strategy is a must and more than that, a strong will to follow the strategy is definitely needed.
As you said, we should always put the stop loss since it helps us many times to stop losing more.

Stopping the trade is something we should do when we have no idea what to do or what strategy we should use at that particular time.
Times like these do arrive but frequently stopping the trade might also make us lose the opportunities to gain from the market.
3745  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: POLL: Have You Ever Used the Lightning Network? on: March 08, 2021, 04:17:57 PM
I have not used the Lightning Network yet but will probably use it soon. I did try to open up a channel once.
I had downloaded and configured the Electrum wallet to open up a channel just when the payment was settled mutually.
So I'm just waiting for the next payment period to arrive when I will be opening up a channel and then start the Lightning Network payment on occasions.

One thing I would like to ask is many people are mentioning wallets I have never heard of before.
Is Electrum not so good for Lightning payments or are the other wallets too good for them ?
3746  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Dice games on: March 07, 2021, 04:40:37 PM
I would agree.

The martingale strategy would be possible assuming that the person has unlimited resources in order to cover for the next bet. Again, we are talking here about the probability and the luck of losing- that is why the possibility of experiencing a losing streak may sound impossible but it is possible.

I personally tried this technique but I failed to recuperate after a 5-losing streak last year when I visited a physical casino. The amount exponentially increases as you lose but you tend to recover back your losings after one win.

A losing streak is very common in almost any game while gambling. I have faced losing streaks of 7, 11 and 16 and definitely it were some bad experiences.
I remember posting about one of these streaks on this forum and I found out it is very common to face these losing streaks.
Since gamblers like me have limited amount kept for gambling, the negative streak ends up the whole balance while doing a martingale.
I then realized it is better to stop gambling when we face upto 5 losing bets continuously and this method has saved me many times.
3747  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: People die from heart attack when they hit the jackpot. on: March 07, 2021, 04:26:19 PM

We can not know when we die, and maybe that person's lives ended once he won the money from the jackpot. That is not fortunate for him because he can not enjoy the win money directly, and even if his family can get the money, that feeling will not be the same if that person is still alive. That will have a bad effect on our lives if we hit the jackpot and died because of a heart attack.

Yes you're absolutely right. The family would have wished the guy not to win the lottery if it were at his life's stake.
What's the use of money when it is at a stake of someone's life ? Doesn't this persuade us to stop such lotteries with such huge amounts that it can risk someone's life.
Lotteries are meant to be a fun giveaway and not a source of making money. Huge amounts on lotteries just persuade more people to get involved with lotteries.
Many get addicted to buying lotteries as well and end up losing their hard earned money. So yeah, these jackpots have more negative affects than positive ones.

Businessman John McAfee, creator of the McAfee anti-virus software, has been charged in the US with conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering. Mr McAfee and his bodyguard Jimmy Gale Watson Jr are accused of promoting cryptocurrencies to Mr McAfee's large Twitter following to inflate prices. The currencies were then allegedly sold, making the pair $2m (£1.45m), prosecutors said. The

John McAfee has been promoting shitcoins since many years and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets charged for crypto fraud.
Money laundering is something which is hard to prove in cryptocurrency. They can charge anybody for money laundering.
Even Charlie Shrem was accused of money laundering for running BitInstant.
3749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rich people causes cryptocurrency ban on: March 07, 2021, 02:14:45 PM
the idea is simple.
if they cant control it themselves. then they have to control who accesses it
stage one is to ban the access. then they hold the control for stage 2
stage 2 is to then allow licenced usage if particular things are met.

yep thats how the NYbitcoin licence done it. first ban. then need the licence to use.

its not about stopping people forever. its to make a wall. then make a door
you cant have a door without a wall

Wow, that makes so much sense now. I never thought of this before.
The current situation for crypto is the same in India. There's a FUD that Indian government might ban cryptocurrencies.
At the same time they want to embrace the blockchain technology and are planning to launch their own CBDC.
I was wondering why they are thinking to ban crypto at the first place while they can simply regularize it and profit from it.
Now I understand that they will first create a wall by banning cryptocurrency usage and then create a door by regularizing it hence having total control on their user base.
3750  Local / India / Re: Whats happening with Binance/WazirX on: March 07, 2021, 01:45:14 PM

I had same issue last to last week while depositing INR into my WazirX account.

They have also stopped accepting the payment from Standard Deposit option and Instant UPI DEPOSIT. I’m not sure what’s wrong with this but would it be related to recent Lok Sabha discussion over crypto ban?

I don't think it has anything to do with the crypto ban discussion currently building up in the Indian crypto community.
Binance has been facing similar issues recently and I think it has something to do with the Binance team.
Either it is because of the recent surge in trading volumes or may be the lack of support from traditional banks.

Quote
I mean slowly they are closing down the stuff and I’m not liking it. History repeats same as ZebPay wallet.

You guys have any second thought whether we should store our crypto assets somewhere else or WazirX is just fine ??

As of now things are not so worse and it would still be okay to hold crypto on the exchange unless it is a big amount.
Bigger amounts should always be stored in non-custodial wallets only.

Update and some answers to your questions :https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5321029.msg56477603#msg56477603

Only a few people are real professionals when it comes to crypto trading. Since crypto market is so volatile it is very hard to gain consistent profits.
On top of that, if you are so confident that you decide to resign from your day job then you must have earned really good profits.
I would only say that if you have really earned consistent profits for a long time only then consider leaving your day job and go full time crypto trading.
Otherwise it might be a bad decision if you just get profits in volatility.
3752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Indian Finance Minister on Cryptocoin. on: March 06, 2021, 05:05:30 PM
“We want to make sure there is a window available for all kinds of experiments which will have to take place in the crypto world. It is not as if we are going to look inwards and say we are not going to have any of this. There will be a very calibrated position,”

https://twitter.com/CNBCTV18News/status/1367810414679977987

We can't really say whether this should be taken in a good way or not because the term "experiments" can be taken as

1. Experimenting with CBDC
2. Experimenting with native cyptocurrencies within India
3. Experimenting Bitcoin and altcoins.

If it's the third then it might be a good sign since it might lead to regulation and eventually acceptance of cryptocurrencies in India as a whole.
If it's one of the first two then it will simply they will be prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies than the ones created in India or by the RBI.

To be honest, the Indian government has only been making ambiguous statements when it comes to crypto and doesn't really have a clear mindset right from the beginning.
3753  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where does Elon and Saylor store their bitcoins? on: March 06, 2021, 04:02:45 PM
Why does it matter where those guys store their bitcoins ?
Even if anybody finds that information out, he/she shouldn't bring out that information since it is something private.
These kind of sensitive information should be kept private otherwise there are a good chances of hackers attacking you.
3754  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: There is more that meet the eye on: March 05, 2021, 04:37:22 PM
Being a bitcoiner/crypto enthusiast it is a must for people like us to beware of such spyware softwares.
These keyloggers are a very easy way to get user credentials and give away private information to hackers.
I remember when I was 15 years old I used a keylogger to get the admin password to access my brother's admin account.
It was fun but it shows how easy it is for anybody to get access to your devices. God forbid if you use 3rd party keyboards and access your crypto wallets then your coins are at stake.
3755  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: inactivity fee on: March 05, 2021, 02:57:32 PM
What happens to your money if you leave it on the exchange and forget about it?

Depends from exchange to exchange
I remember how people were surprised and angry at Latoken announcing they will charge a 5$ per month for inactive accounts but so few of them knew a lot more exchanges do so, like bitfinex or cryptocom.

So read the terms and services of your exchange before you start using it if you're concerned about it.
Or far better, don't leave any funds on an exchange at all.

At the end of 2017, he used an account, but after dump in 2018 decided to go on hold

Hold by keeping your funds on an exchange, that's the worse thing one can do, when the price finally goes up you might find out the exchange is no longer there!

That's the most appropriate thing anybody should do but let's consider the below scenario

Assuming I left some BTC on the exchange when it was worth $50 and I don't feel like trading anymore.
So I take a break and come back after 2 years to find out bitcoin spiked up to 15x times.
Considering BTC spiked from $3000 to $58000 in last 12 months it is quite a possible scenario.
So now my $50 turned into $750 but when I login into my account it's not there or may be the exchange charged a hefty fees for inactivity.

$50 would not have been a big amount back then which is why I would not have considered to transfer it to a non-custodial wallet.

What should be best thing to do in such a scenario ? @stompix
3756  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do you rely on the odds when placing bets? on: March 05, 2021, 02:27:56 PM
That's surely an easy way to bet since most of the times the bet which has higher winning probability has more odds.
But personally I don't like this kind of bet since the risk to reward ratio is often bad in these kind of bets.
Bigger Odds have less rewards and the risk taken doesn't add up to the reward.
~snip
No you are wrong, the risk to reward ratio remains the same AFAIK, odds are lower BECAUSE the risk is lower too.
The implied probability of winning is the inverse of the (decimal)odds. With 50% chances of winning you'll have a betting odds of 2.0 With 25% chances to win you'll get 4.0 So when winning chances double, the reward halves.

You are right. I used the term "Risk to reward ratio" wrongly. My bad.
But what I meant was when the odds are high the rewards are low. The risk is lower too but when our luck goes against us we lose the whole amount on the bet.
This is where I don't like it since the reward was low yet I lost a bigger chunk of amount on the bet. And yeah this is bound to happen since it comes under the risk taking category.
3757  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are full nodes on: March 04, 2021, 04:47:06 PM
What are full nodes, how are full nodes important? Can the bitcoin network be possible without having the full nodes. Miners verify transactions, are they having full nodes to verify transactions?

In simple terms Full nodes are computer clients which has the whole blockchain downloaded to their computers. Full nodes are also called as peers. Hence bitcoin network is called as a peer to peer network.
Full nodes increase the robustness of the bitcoin network by keeping it decentralized. Full nodes validates the blocks and adds them to the longest chain. A block receives one confirmation when it is added to the longest chain. When another block is added on top of the current block it receives 2 confirmations and so on. A block is added every 10 minutes approximately. Full nodes are important because they keep the bitcoin network secure.

Miners verify transactions, are they having full nodes to verify transactions?
No, miners do not verify transactions, miners mine new blocks and confirmed bitcoin transactions, only nodes( nodes with full blockchain) are regarded as full nodes and are the ones that can verify the transactions confirmed and blocks mined by miners. After a node verify a transaction it route it to another node for further verification.

Well technically miners do validate the transactions by referencing it through the consensus rules. Miners reject any transaction if they are invalid and add the valid transactions to the block. Source : Mastering Bitcoin

3758  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Dice games on: March 04, 2021, 04:26:55 PM
But if you are getting a 100x losing streak, maybe you need to stop for a while and do not continue because I am afraid that can trigger your emotion becoming bigger, and you can forget about stopping the game.
Some people will still play more rounds after losing many times, which is because their curiosity becomes bigger, which means your emotion will also get impact.
It is how we can control ourselves in any gambling games, not just in a dice game because that can fatal to us and our money, especially if we forget to stop.
Why wait for 100x losing streak when a 3 or 6 consecutive losses could have been enough to stop because you know that you are not getting any value out of it. If you are still going strong despite a 100 consecutive losing streak, I think that everyone here can agree that that person is an addict. It is difficult for an addict to stop gambling so advising to control themselves will be of no benefit to anyone.
100x losing streak?
Even if you do make use of DOGE in your betting even with the minimal bet you cant able to reach up this multiplier because most likely people do lost up with 30 on maximum
based on experience
You would able to read up those losing streak discussions and see it for yourself on how long they do able to reach out.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1417931.40
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1584050.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5172529.60

Exactly! I recently did a math and even if we start with 1 Satoshi and do a martingale with 2x then it would cost 1.3 BTC around 26 bets of losing streak.
So it's not even 30 bets of losing streak. Only a fool will bet more than 1BTC to receive a reward of 1 Satoshi in profit.
This is where martingale strategy sucks but yeah there are other ways to use martingale as well.
Such as changing the seeds or continuing the other day or may be changing the strategy in some other way.

By using the search facility the answers to this query can be found in approximately 4 seconds.

Its one of the most popular topics here on the forum, I got bored of copying links so I stopped at around 20.

Bang on ! I was waiting for someone to post this and you did it in a better way.
I wonder why people don't use the search function when it can easily answer all our queries most of the time.
