Some corrections:

The pi is far from being a perfect mining controller :/ believe me I've tried!
Better use a crappy ATOM Netbook.

You need two power supply's if you want to run them with wall plugs. Each board draws about 40w so only one NT (65w) is not sufficient. Even a 90w ps won't work for long.
These ps will die over time! I had three out of 5 failing on me after 5 month (not the best quailty; they get hot, ideal load is about three single 1.15x boards not a quad; need cooling ---> if they get to hot or to old your board will be malfunction).

Why the hell is a GPU setup not viable for displaying?

Good catch on the power supply. My post was rushed and I don't really care about doing too much research since I just posted for fun.
It's just my opinion; A GPU setup presents a lower hashrate, using more floor space and a higher power consumption with a lower initial investment (supposedly. I haven't checked costs in a while). If I wanted to invest in something long-term as a business, I would be more interested in the most efficient. I assume this supposed company is interested in large-scale, meaning a working small-scale model of something that can be scaled up would be much more convincing.

Still have the x6500 for sale?
383  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What would you buy if... ? on: December 22, 2012, 08:09:10 AM
I have no experience with business or large scale operations.

However, A GPU setup is not viable because of what the company needs to present. A small efficient setup would display the possibility of expansion. Waiting for ASICs is stupid because then you delay the business moving forward. Make ASICs a fundamental part of your presentation for shareholders.
Currently, the only viable FPGA seems to be the ZTEX 1.15y. I would prefer a setup using x6500s but they are just not as available.
Order everything directly from ZTEX: 2x 1.15y boards, 1x power supply, 1x 5 way splitter, 2x usb cables. total: 1918 Euros. For the sake of quick calculations, let's call this $3000 of our budget after shipping, taxes and let's add in a power meter and raspberry pi or similar low-powered, low cost... let's call them "cluster controllers" with a usb hub supporting up to 5 at one time.
I'm assuming this company is already established and has some kind of working office.
Measure power, present results, analyze profitability, present analysis of bitcoin network, ASIC adoption and profitability over time. Convince them that things will not become less profitable over time and will either remain constant or increase with expansion.
The other $2000 goes towards this however the company analyzes the cost of work and presentation.
That's as specific as I can be.
Just posted because I thought it was something cool to think about.

Bug report:

Not sure if there is a place I should report bugs or if this bug has been reported but I can't be bothered to find out so I figured reporting it here is better than nothing.

Bug:
MH/s between GPU0 and GPU1 is flipped. Everything else is correctly matching the right GPU but apparently my 6950 is giving me 25MH/s and my 6450 is giving me 369MH/s. I upgraded from version 2.7.5 where this issue didn't exist.
I have not tested just running one of my cards or with more than 2 cards.
6950 appears in the top line and 6450 appears in the bottom line. while the MH/s are reversed.

Setup:
CGminer 2.9.7
Windows 8
GPU0 6950 unlocked xfx xxx
GPU1 6450 gigabyte passive
MSI motherboard with 2x pci-e 16x 8x 6950 in top slot

Sorry about reviving this thread, I had forgotten a new one was started. I would close this thread if I were a mod.

For those new, all information about this is spread out between the following topics, in order (do search):
>"Yes, but what if?"
>"Freecoiner.org" [newbies section]
>"Freecoiner.org" [project development section]
387  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Freecoiner.org on: December 10, 2012, 08:49:54 AM
Took me a while to track this topic down again. I've been out of it since I my job picked up mid-summer. How is freecoiner coming? The website is still a placeholder and nothing posted since July. After this week, I might have some time to offer my web skills.

So I just re-found this whole thing and can't seem to find anything past July.

So um drakahn... Since I was "invited" this means I can invite you. So I invite you. And so that would make me 4o going by the criteria on the newbies freecoiner posts...

For those new, all information about this is spread out between the following topics (do search):
>"Yes, but what if?"
>"Freecoiner.org" [newbies section]
>"Freecoiner.org" [project development section] {ie, this thead}

the registered domain:
http://freecoiner.org

provided this project can get up and running, I would be willing to take over temporary design of this domain just to replace the godaddy placeholder... especially with the free time I have now.

FYI, here is the current data from my google docs chart that I set up to calculate stuff. A block is currently 50BTC:
These are based on probability.

GH/s to solve 1 block/hour   3,214
GH/s to solve 1 block/day   134
GH/s to solve 1 block/week   19
GH/s to solve 1 block/month   4   30-day month

Market:
-What information do you want to see added and where can I fetch it from?

Total trading volume (all exchanges combined):
Summation of 24h volumes from:

 - http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/chart.json?m=bitfloorUSD&i=Daily&c=1&s=2012-08-30&e=2012-08-30
etc, for each exchange.  I think the volume is in BTCs

Here's a post which contains a list of all the different markets (m=).

Excellent. Liking this. More financial stuff will be added as soon as I figure out how to parse to only part of the fetched information in google docs. Too bad it's not xml.

My suggestions:
- Time between blocks for the current difficulty level.
- The Current and Predictions should be right next to each other.  For instance, you should show "Days to solve @ 1GH/s" and "New days to solve @ 1GH/s" right above/below each other for easy comparability.
- Next difficulty should be nearby current difficulty, or nearby the "Days to next retarget" field.
- If you can, pull in the latest MtGox number, and show some interesting financial calculations as well ($x.xx made per day with 1GH/s, $xx.xx made per month with 1GH/s, etc).

Added your first 3 points. Really liking how your suggestions make it easier to read and save on space.

391  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Looking for suggestions for cheapest rig for 3 5830s on: September 02, 2012, 01:40:01 PM
My stock voltage 5830@ 1020MHz does 327MH/s under CGminer in linux. 981+ ~650 for the 7970 will get you 1.5-1.7.

For putting the 5830s in a new rig, assuming you can't find used parts, you'll perhaps want to look at something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131813

with a pcie 1x to 16x extension cable and 2 16x to 16x extension cables. The advantage of getting an AMD APU system is you get those extra few MH/s from the integrated GPU and bumps you up to just over 1GH/s. Don't need much pcie bandwidth. Don't need more than 2GB of ram. Don't cheap out on the PSU.

See here for a lot of network data that can help with how much you will make:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlfvS-7vLyHjdGIyUjdDSFJsT2s5TWdIX3hNcWF5ckE
^the difficulty should change in just under 5 days.

This is my favourite calculator:
http://98.201.170.173:81/btc_calc.php

You can set your system up with BAMT and leave it running. Easy to configure, easy to check stats. I use CGminer under it with my 5830.
http://bamter.org/

The only thing I have found is if I shut the system down, I have to reflash the usb drive and reconfigure because it seems to corrupt itself. But that doesn't take too long and overclocking with CGminer couldn't be easier.

*----------------------------------------------*
Update: I don't have time to keep this document both updated and to fix it every time there is a problem with my sources which overflows the cells. So I would like to give editing permissions to some members of the bitcoin community to improve the document and keep it error-free.
As for the overflow problem: essentially, whenever my source websites have a problem, they return a 404 page or error page and when google docs tries to insert it, it ends up inserting all the data in different cells, ruining the document. The solution is simple: revert to the most recent change. But the problem is someone needs to keep checking back.

Anyway, for those two reasons, I would like to hand this over to members of bitcointalk who I can trust not to mess up the document and who are willing to improve and maintain the document.

If you are interested, please email me at mokahless@gmail.com and/or leave your gmail address in this thread.

*----------------------------------------------*

I've recently had some spare time and have started working on a google docs repository of Bitcoin information based on blockchain.info and blockexplorer.

The doc will remain active as long as blockchain.info and blockexplorer remain active.

I would like this information to be useful to the community. Currently it is separated into three categories:

Network: information related to the network and coin generation
Market:   financial information of bitcoin
Addresses: an easy-to-read list of addresses and transactions belonging to those addresses.

Here is the link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlfvS-7vLyHjdGIyUjdDSFJsT2s5TWdIX3hNcWF5ckE

I created this thread to expand the information offered, improve the information offered and expose this doc to the community as an easy-to-access information repository. Over time, I also hope to make it prettier but information comes first.

So what do I need from you?

Network:
-What information do you want to see added and where can I fetch it from?
-What calculations are badly put together?
-What calculations can be simplified?

Market:
-What information do you want to see added and where can I fetch it from?

Addresses:
-What addresses belong to pirateat40?
-What addresses belong to the major pools?
-What other addresses would you like to see added?

395  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: LargeCoin Pricing Announced; Taking Pre-Orders on: August 28, 2012, 02:08:51 AM

No ongoing communication is required after you have configured the license token; and, if you prefer, you don't have to connect your device to the Internet at all. There will be a way to enter the license token without having it connected to the Internet.

Does this clear up everyone's concerns about DRM?

Then how do I connect to the bitcoin protocol?
396  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Ufasoft Coin - Multi-currency client for Windows 0.30 on: August 24, 2012, 02:03:02 AM

My concern is being able to back up my wallet in the same format as the default client. If this can be done, please let us know. I don't care if I have to use third party software to export as long as I can export it in the same format.

Some text format should be common for all clients' Export/Import.
But it still not standardized by Bitcoin dev team.

That would be nice.
But are you saying that the wallet.dat file format used by the bitcoinqt client is closed source?

399  Other / Meta / Re: Mandatory forum donation on: August 18, 2012, 08:22:52 AM
I think a better method would be to push for donations more if needed. Obvious donation button, etc.

This idea would just push out a lot of members who don't need their accounts. It would start to exclude those new to bitcoin who start to take an active role and can't or don't want to afford it. The database might start to fill up with many more accounts... mokahless1, mokahless2, mokahless3.

In many ways the idea contradicts some reasons for the use of bitcoins.

Well, the data for all my devices is up now so no new testing I can do. Love the app but there are still some glitches. This is on android 2.3.3 with a tegra 2, I didn't test too much with my other devices:

-about 25% of the time, the drop down menu only has the option of 1 core. Quick fix would be to always have 1-4 as option
-stops mining and resets the number of threads option to "1" about 80% of the time if I rotate the screen
-when the screen turns off, it doesn't prevent idle clocks. This means my Atrix mines at like 200MHz. I tried it on my nexus 7 as well and the console listed speeds that make sense for 4 threads running on a 500MHz single core
-credentials not saved
-console doesn't autoscroll
