To short BBR, you need to find someone who will loan it to you.  The interest rate will probably be exhorbitant.  When I shorted I did fairly well but paid out a large chunk as interest.  My short performance was degrading rapidly at the end, which means I was taking increasing risk, so I lost interest.  Also I think I was making volatility worse, rather than better, at the end, which is bad for BBR, so I knew it was time to stop.  Good mean-reversion strategy performance should result in lower volatility in the underlying.  If it is doing the opposite, you're doing it wrong - or you're trading momentum.  I may do again, but not until I have more clarity on the fundamental and technical situation in BBR - which may never happen since it is just not very interesting to me. I want to buy future reserve currency, stack it high, and hold it long.  Anything else is just a distraction.

I bet he was not the only one. Nothing wrong with shorting, but understand they were trying to kill BBR. They were willing to take loses with BBR, because they gain with huge position (+50k) in XMR. As he put it, only XMR, the rest are only distraction. Grin

Absolutely they were. Arrogance. BBR, which I wish it would be renamed, should have the same market cap as XMR.

I agree, but same market cap would mean price of BBR > XMR due to smaller daily emmision. Not gonna happen, as soon BBR will get close to the price of XMR they will start shorting like crazy.

It has even been mentioned that BBR should increase in price as a result from an attack towards XMR code (which BBR itself also uses). This proposal is ridiculous, because either it has the same vulnerability and the attack was just directed to the more prominent coin, or BBR will suffer the same attack soon or be already suffering it without even noticing, OR that BBR insider(s) are behind the attack.

Oh dear, very stupid thing to say without any proof.
385  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] rpietila Monero Economics thread on: September 04, 2014, 08:37:13 AM
Speaking of short term prices, I am expecting 0.001 - 0.002 range when this gets sorted out.

We shall see, but I doubt people will panic so hard, after all they knew what they are buying - coin still under development and similiar things happened to other coins. But I might be wrong and this is the end.  Grin

Glede na trenutno povprečje (0,7% dnevno) je zaslužek v trajanju share-a (torej 4 mesece):

- 56% brez takojšnjih ponovnih nakupov share-ov;

Serious buying going on tonight  Shocked

What do you think BBR's fair value is?
BBR Peak: June 22, 0.0036BTC
BBR intrinsic value at June 22 = X
BBR intrinsic value today = 3X   (GUI, statum pool mining, supernet, etc)
Todays BTC value = 3 * 0.0036 = 0.0108BTC

This is not the fair value, you calculated max price per coin or potential peak of a bubble.

IMO fair value of BBR will be above 0.001 and between XMR price - it's hard to say exactly when this new wave od adoption will stop. Remember there are less coins and slower emission curve. I estimate that market cap should be around 1/3 of XMR because there is far less users and whales in bbr, but this could change fast like we saw when people like James step in and give more credibility to the coin.

Why I cannot send the complete amount of BBR (using GUI, V0.2.0.32) ?
If I want to do this, I will get the error: Failed to send transaction: transaction is too big

You need to send smaller transaction. I think auto-split is not yet implemented.

Anonymint has a tendency to go around and criticize everyone's work, while dropping thinly veiled hints that he has the solution. Without ever providing that solution.

Reality check is important part of life and Anonymint is doing outstanding job.
I agree. His criticism can be very useful. But the whole "I know the solution, and I'm not telling you!" shtick gets a bit tiring when nothing ever comes of it.

I believe he is an honest guy and wants to create in his opinion and knowledge the perfect coin ("the new standard") without giving away bits of info and thus create numerous altcoins pumps and dumps in the process and/or some entity use this knowledge for some ulterior motives. Just my impression.

Note that in my prior linked post about Gold, the rush to anonymity and avoid socialism-gone-mad taxation
...
Bitcoin is failing (to scale to ubiquity) because it is not decentralized.
...
Sorry but imo Monero is a joke pretending to be serious.

Wealth preservation is the art of allocating between the least-shitty alternatives.

Please, If someone can just make a short update.. I'm following thread from the start but can't recall when/why AnonyMint thinks Monero is a joke.. Thanks.

I think this might help you: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=624223.msg8068923#msg8068923

392  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SuperNET IPO - conducted by Poloniex on: August 31, 2014, 07:56:44 AM

1.your identity is still anonymous.

2. you being the epicenter of the decisions and control of the funds of this project

3. lack of structured planning

I will take audacity and answer your questions.

1. Knowing identity is not important as there were numerous scams in cryptoland where we all knew who was behind. I am not sure if you remember, but the recent was Mark Karpeles. They were all high rank bitcoiners and yet they scammed. Not knowing identity is also saving problems if goverments of the future decide to somehow punish someone for doing some grat thing for humanity, wouldn't be the first time.

2. That's how he rolls - this is the most effective organizational structure as there is no middle man or some board of people who don't even grasp the idea.

3. That's how he rolls - if you ever worked in some company you would know how inefficient structured planning can be. James is doing innovation and you cannot structure innovation, because there is just to many unknowns ahead of time.

I kinda like BBR so I was looking for ideas on how to encourage miners to hold onto their coins and network control via compound interest seems like something no other coin anywhere has.

Miners will be selling regardless, they have bills to pay, they hold some percentage only if they see great potential in coin, but majority of miners are just moving from coin to coin. Mintcoin is example of a coin where you get interest for just holding the coin in your wallet, this idea just doesn't work. It is idea where you get something for nothing and this is economically unsustainable and creates imbalances and in time it gets out of control.

The problem of BBR was that there was not enough buyers, now this has hopefully changed thanks to James involvement.

Solution to your problem is simple: find more users of BBR. This can be done through commerce, recommendations to others, free BBR if you do some stuff (maybe tweet about bbr, download wallet and install on your computer and give address, miner create your alias and you receive free bbr),...

But that's been the case for a while - what specifically sparked this sudden price jump today? Was it the btcdark guy's endorsement?

Does it really matter in the long run? Coin was undervalued and smart people bought. Today we got to 40:1 xmr/bbr ratio - coins are similar, bbr is better in many ways, buying anything below 0.001 is a great price. True there are not many whales around this coin and it don't have as many developers as xmr, but as I see it 1x crypto-zoidberd is as good as 3x xmr developer at least on actual work being done.

Its been a while, but I've been a bit busy. Had a bit of time waiting for a test result, so popped in to see what was going on.
Anyway as I always knew, BBR is best cryptonote fork, with dev like zoidberg it is just a matter of time for market to catch up.
Did XMR have the mixin bug too?
I've had some run in with some XMR guys and they seem quite competitive and sometimes downright hostile. Not sure why they dont realize cooperation will lead to better results for all parties in an expanding market.
Last i checked, crypto and especially anon crypto is an expanding market

Anyway, soon I will have a bit more time for my favorite cryptonote as I am near making beta release.

James

P.S. for those that were calling me a parasite and made me feel not so welcome here, it's OK, probably my fault for not being clear what I was trying to do.

BBR will need any help it can get in order to survive, maybe James could give some advices to the btc-mike - Organization and Promotion how to prepare advertisement strategy to atract new users. It's a shame that such a great coin doesn't get more recognition.

Oh no, we're going up again! We can't allow this to go on! We need to get down to sub-400 to shake out more weak hands first!

Now we are going to shake out short positions, then maybe down again.
397  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero (XMR) Speculation thread on: August 18, 2014, 03:39:06 PM
I'm starting to think this is a great time to buy some Monero. The long term prospects are very good as this is certainly the best of the Cryptonote coins. The question is, is today the day or does it have farther to fall?

Historically anything below 0.003 is a buy, because prices never stayed below for significant amount of time. I'll give you a free tip: there is a falling trendline that has not been breached and price has bounced lower every time it touched. It will work like that until it won't.
398  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 16, 2014, 01:57:04 PM
They do not have the influx of new users. So, XMR community consists of old users only, in other words, it's closed community as mostly of altcoin community.

This is incorrect.  The XMR user base is growing about 60% monthly. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702140.msg8209493#msg8209493

Current growth of users has slowed down and is no more than 2-3% per week. (numbers used in my estimation are from the current week not used in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=622708.msg8279959#msg8279959 ). Monthly estimates for altcoin that is baby are useless.
Current trend is worrisome, but XMR is holding quite well compared to other alts.
399  Economy / Speculation / Re: Analysis never ends on: August 14, 2014, 01:42:22 PM
As a result of Bitfinex margin call cascade, ~$450 reached. Whether we go down further or not, I consider that deep enough to qualify as a "dramatic selloff" as predicted by masterluc.

Another plus point added to his already excellent record.

No no, we haven't seen the worst of it yet.

We may hang around these levels for a bit and bounce up a little even, but the worst is yet to come in the next few months...

Ok, crashing and pain, but what happens after this ends?
400  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: August 11, 2014, 11:35:32 PM
Look here's the problem im comfronting when I talk about Bitcoin to people:

1) They do not want to spend FIAT on it to access it. The see this as a waste of time, and they actually lose money due fee's.
2) They don't understand how something has volatile can be used as a currency.
3) People tend to hold BTC and use it as a store of value like Gold. They feel paying with BTC is as dumb as paying with a piece of Gold because anything you can buy with BTC, is available easier with cash/transaction.
4) They feel they are just serving the lucky early adopters while they get shit nothing.
5) The ATM machines are shit as demonstrated by the Tested video

How does that get solved so we can reach mass adoption? Unless legitimate jobs where you get paid good amounts of BTC arise, I dont see any other way to get legit amounts of BTC beyond risking FIAT into it in the first place. But of course, im not sure if people is going to want risking getting paid in BTC.

All this problems existed for every new technology (electricity, internet, cars,...). All your issues will get resolved, just give it time - engineers are working on this. BTC is really in the early stage, but you can see that VC money has started to finance companies that have ideas and will find the right solutions. You have great advantage of knowing what BTC and it's potential and maybe you will find some practical solution for it and monetize it.

As for payment in BTC - I am getting paid via Paypal and I am going to ask my employer if he would be willing to pay me in BTC. I am currently partly working as translator and in this bussiness you get paid mostly via Paypal. As employers will get to know BTC they will force every translator to use it - it will happen, because Paypal is just too expensive and margins in this highly competitive bussiness are very tiny and change is just a matter of time. Let's say there are 100.000 translators (my guestimate) being paid via paypal or some other service which takes 5-10% of your or employers profit away and competion is driving your price down. What will happen? And this is just one type of bussiness - there are millions of freelancers on this world.
