Are the 2 right boxes both using the Argon One m.2 case?
Yes that case. What is interesting is that the umbrel runs much cooler then raspiblitz. I thought it might be a case issue, but it followed the install when I wiped and reinstalled on the other device.

And how are the web GUIs of these projects? Since you mentioned RTL as well; is RTL more powerful / how does it compare to the stuff they come with out of the box?
None of them have anything for natively managing LN. You have to either SSH in and do it at the command line or use one RTL / Thunderhub / etc.
The GUI is for managing the device itself / getting to the apps. i.e. on mynode you can go to http://mynode.local and log in and click on RTL or you can save a step and just go to http://mynode.local:3000

But for doing other management tasks, checking on the status of the device having a GUI is great.
raspiblitz relies on a text interface though SSH or the screen (that I did not install)
Not saying not having it is *bad*, but clicking a web gui and then just 1 button to regenerate / reconfigure something is just nice for us lazy people.

Umbrel, Slick GUI, has the app store concept which I like, and the fact that it can do things unrelated to just BTC / lightning. Don't like the fact that at least for now it's locked to TOR only. I know the other things that it can do are security risks, but if you don't install them you are not at risk.

Curious to know how its app store works. Is it just a repurposing of Snap to something else, or it is like having its own repo where it pulls its apps from and just uses the local package manager?

A high level overview: https://blog.getumbrel.com/introducing-the-umbrel-app-store-7a2068c64a10

As a thought:
They all run in a Docker cointainer, so if you trust the security of it then you can sleep at night and not worry about bad things happening to your BTC.
If you see all the vulnerabilities that VMWare and all the other VM containers keep having then you might not want to.
You have to accept your own level of risk.
Would like to see that spelled out more before you install apps.

I don't have a problem, I can quit collecting anytime I want.

So, mynode. Works well out of the box, but the fact that some things are for the $99 paid premium option I don't like.
Base GUI is nice, and it does work quite well. Also, like the fact that you can run it as a VM on a regular PC.

Raspiblitz. Probably one of the earliest implementations of a pre done LN node in a box. No real GUI, all done through SSH or the screen (which I don't have / use) does just about anything you need it to do. 100% free.

Umbrel, Slick GUI, has the app store concept which I like, and the fact that it can do things unrelated to just BTC / lightning. Don't like the fact that at least for now it's locked to TOR only. I know the other things that it can do are security risks, but if you don't install them you are not at risk.

All use LND none have c-lightning, All have the ability to install RTL to manage your node along with other web based options.
All the builds above are RPi4 4GB with a 1TB SSD. the 2 on the right are m.2 SATA and the one on the left is a regular 2.5" SSD.

3804  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: For All Of You That Still Think SMS For 2FA For Wallets Is Or Was Safe. on: October 05, 2021, 03:43:30 PM
Oh, well, SMS based 2FA should not be used anyway. I was under the assumption that it's insecure and not to be used for years.
If you use something like FIDO U2F your chances are better.
However, no system is 100% secure, and almost everything will probably be hacked sooner or later. Even with a perfectly secure cryptosystem, you'll have flaws in the implementation for example.
I don't see how 2FA is used in a wallet though. Would this be for online wallets? Because those shouldn't be used in the first place either Grin

Exchanges, use 2fa all the time. Some use Google or similar many use SMS.
And even if you live by the don't leave your coins on an exchange idea. If you do want to move fiat in and out or do trading, you are going to one sooner or later.

On top of that, no matter how you look at it, it's really surprising that the fact that a hack of this magnitude went on for so long and nobody is really talking about it.

3805  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About Taproot on: October 05, 2021, 12:13:04 PM
There is a longish taproot discussion that has been going on for over 2 years here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5140134.0

One of the major things that will be better for most people is the fact that multisig transactions will be smaller so they will be less expensive to use.
Taproot (and schnorr) also makes complex scripting better in general.

As with many things, people at 1st may or many not see an immediate benefit, but as the BTC protocol improves people will find new and better ways to use it.

3806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 6000 coinbase clients hacked on: October 05, 2021, 11:18:59 AM
The hack took place between March and May 20 of this year, according to a copy of the letter posted on the website of California's Attorney General.
Can anyone beat that? This is why we say the media is the biggest problem of the crypto industry, not politicians. Why exhume something that happened between March and May at this time in October (four months after) if not to cause panic at a time Bitcoin seemed to be recovering? The media is the witchcraft here. It's very disappointing too that such came from Reuters, like rioters. Nonsense.

Yet another reason why KYC is a bad thing. Damn, I wish I didn’t sign up to so many exchanges in the past. Obviously leaving a significant amount of bitcoin on an exchange is a bad idea but we shouldn’t have to worry about our personal details being stolen.
A lot of us made that mistake back then. We really can't help what happened in the past now but to try and make amends for the future, going forward.

Because Coinbase did not tell anybody about it till now. If Coinbase did not make a statement or let anybody know, then nobody can report on it.
On a side note 6000 customers out of the 68,000,000 that they have is also a very small amount. So although an interesting story, it's not like most of they clients had any issues.

3807  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-09-30] Kraken Security Labs Identifies Vulnerabilities In Bitcoin ATMs on: October 05, 2021, 11:11:58 AM

Having said those, it appears that they could easily fix the "tamper detection" part with some sort of wireless tamper sensor [e.g. something like this].

For most ATMs (not BATM) the tamper protection is also part of the hardware so if you break into the ATM, it is supposed to lock down hard, send an alert AND on the bigger & better ones die-packs the money.

Almost none of them do it well or even properly, but at least they recognize the fact that it can and will happen.
From what I have seen from BATMs physical security is an afterthought.

It never was. And no matter how much you want to think otherwise YOU were probably part of this breach.
That's correct, billions of messages over 5 years.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3xpm8/company-that-routes-billions-of-text-messages-quietly-says-it-was-hacked

The company wrote that it discovered the breach in May 2021, but that the hack began in May of 2016.

Go ahead, send nudes to your partner. I'll just download them and look at them later. I am busy taking some money out of your accounts at the moment.

1. What's the relation between this.. news and Bitcoin?

Sadly, too much.

IMO there are far to many BTC / crypto businesses that rely on facebook to relay news and other things.
Some people get a lot of or all of their BTC and other crypto information from FB feeds.
So,although we like to think that bitcointalk is all important, FB does matter in this regard.

Just my view.

At a guess, someone was doing routing updates and messed something up.
Big providers like Verizon & AT&T & Cogent have had issues like this at times when something that is 100% routine and checked dozens of times in testing dies when it goes live.
AWS has spun themselves into oblivion a few times also due to routing issues.

Not going to worry about it, mostly because I don't have a Facebook or Instagram account.

3811  Economy / Economics / Re: Will we see new ATH this year? on: October 04, 2021, 03:53:50 PM
I think a lot depends on the SEC approving some of the BTC ETFs
If they do, I can see BTC spiking up and staying there as it will now be considered more legitimate by some people.
If they do not I think we will bounce around and get back to $60k but above that will be hard until we hear some other form of good news.

3812  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: October 04, 2021, 01:31:59 PM
I fired up an umbrel node also. Took ~4days for sync but after this it does not display the info properly...

Only had a 500GB SSD around so I assume that might be the issue. It still has 24GB available though. Will retry with a 1TB as soon as I get my hands on one  Smiley

When it's all done you need more then 500GB, between the blockchain, the LN database and the Electrum DB:
A 1TB will be fine for a long time to come, but 500 GB is just not going to work with everything.
You might be able just to shut it down and clone the 500GB to a 1TB but I would just let it resync.

@igehhh what makes these projects worse then any of the other 1000s of them that are out there.
I have really stopped paying attention to the token Scam Of The Day so I am actually curious what makes these more noteworthy.

The entire Tokens board ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=240.0 )is nothing but a shithole of scams, back in the day there used to be the occasional one here and there that just *might* *possibly* be worth something *maybe*. But, those days are long gone.

3814  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin 10% increase in a day - why? on: October 04, 2021, 11:37:04 AM
Why does it have to have 1 reason or any reason?
Possibly it went up a bit because of the delay of the US infrastructure bill.
And possibly it went up a bit because of what Powell said.
And possibly it went up a bit with the start of October being a time when a lot of people start to do a bit of saving.
And possibly it went up a bit because of the fact that there looks like a few BTC / crypto funds are going to be approved this month.

A few little things can easily become a big thing, and if you ONLY look for the big thing you might not see how all the little things come together.

https://blog.kraken.com/post/11263/kraken-security-labs-identifies-vulnerabilities-in-commonly-used-bitcoin-atm/

Quote
Kraken Security Labs has uncovered multiple hardware and software vulnerabilities in a commonly used cryptocurrency ATM: The General Bytes BATMtwo (GBBATM2). Multiple attack vectors were found through the default administrative QR code, the Android operating software, the ATM management system and even the hardware case of the machine.

But here is the fun part

Quote
Kraken Security Labs reported the vulnerabilities to General Bytes on April 20, 2021, they released patches to their backend system (CAS) and alerted their customers, but full fixes for some of the issues may still require hardware revisions.

So I want to start a betting pool, how long will these old machines that need hardware updates be sitting out in the field being used?
Yes, I know this is not just a BATM thing, there have been dozens of ATM hacks over the years and vulnerable ATMs are still out there.
But, in the end it's the users who pay the price for operators not caring and manufacturers not doing their job in checking security.

Meh, it's the way it is here.
There are 100s (1000s?) of users here that look like this person:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2156763
Or this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2297077

Thousands of bounty posts, no 'real' content and no merit. They are going to spend years here and still be a newbie.
If that works for theymos & the rest of the staff why should we care?
I think it's a waste of resources and time but that's me. With that I am really surprised that nobody has come up with a better way to manage bounties then pages and pages of posts like that. I would have thought by now some web developer would have come up with a nice online setup for people to submit stuff in instead of the way it's done now.

3817  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Best Bitcoin ATM to buy for inside your home? on: October 03, 2021, 05:03:51 PM
Isn't that going to depend on the decor of your house too?

Also it depends on what you mean by not relying on a company to remain functional?

Picking on GeneralBytes you need their back end software to make the ATM work. But you can run the software on your own hardware so you don't need them.
But if they go away, so do your updates. So at some point things might stop working. But, even if what you are running is 100% free and open source if people stop developing for it then it stops working too.

What do you think is a low purchase price? Once again, people will feel differently. I don't watch a lot of TV, so *I* think spending $400+ in todays world on a TV is insane. That light bar for my motorcycle? $450+tax it's not that much money why? :-)

3818  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [List] Gift cards providers on: October 03, 2021, 04:51:11 PM
Does anyone know what happened to Netflix smaller denominations? I used to buy 15$ cards from both Bitrefill and Coinsbee, but they're now gone, from both. Not sure if it's a coincidence and they're simply out of stock or Netflix is no longer issuing them? I checked all the services listed, and none of them have Netflix GCs, so I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to a service that sells them.

Going to guess that with the price increases that Netflix has done / will be doing the $15 cards may no longer cover a month of service by next year:
https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/06/22/netflix-could-raise-prices-again-soon/
So getting rid of them beforehand may just be the 1st step in doing that.

I think over the next few years we are going to continue to be seeing a lot of $1 here and there price increases on streaming services till they find the consumer pain point.
Which then means (I think) that we are going to start to see things like this where gift cards start at larger amounts.

3819  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Bitcoin have any real value? on: October 03, 2021, 02:26:37 PM
Bitcoin is not backed by any physical asset like Gold nor by any fiat currency. It makes me wonder if I should invest/trade in Bitcoin or not?

Most things are not backed by a physical asset like gold. Unless you are buying gold.
But I can buy just about anything I need with BTC
And I can buy and hold BTC as an investment just like any other currency.

Look at some of the 'safe' stocks that people have invested in over the years.

Metals are not safe either click on the YTD price on rhodium (you will have to click on YTD):

Wow, what crap construction. Got my friends coins out last night and decided to see if we could take it apart to figure out if we could fix it.
Not like we can do any more damage to it....

Pried the top off, and had metal tabs and flakes land on the table. No idea where they came from, looks like debris that landed in it during assembly.
Sadly, no pictures since we declared it worthless and decided to get dinner at that point. His wife cleaned up the kitchen table so we could eat before we got back.
