http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/magazine/how-bitcoin-is-disrupting-argentinas-economy.html?_r=0

"JPMorgan belongs to an association of big banks, the Clearing House, that has been confidentially putting together a “proof of concept” for a decentralized ledger, or blockchain, that would run on the computers of all the participating banks. According to people involved, this network, which is still in the conceptual phase, could allow instant transfers between accounts at all the member banks and eliminate the current risks involved in having billions of dollars in limbo for days at a time. For many bankers, the most valuable potential use of the blockchain is not small payments but very large ones, which account for the vast majority of the money moving around the world each day. The banks, though, are moving slowly, even as several start-ups are trying to use the Bitcoin blockchain to do the same thing on a global basis, cutting out the banks altogether."

When they inevitably realize that the only truly secure, decentralized blockchain is the original, well, you can't move "very large payments" with a 3.5 billion dollar marketcap.  Wink

Bitcoin technology, as it exists, is well-suited to a settlement/clearing network. It has a "value gap" problem (chasm of value). It is settling-clearing small-mid size transfers using tech. that is more advanced than SWIFT.

The first big banks that grok the logic of why they must use bitcoin/Bitcoin and choose to cut and run from the pack get all the marbles.

I really like this utxo discussion. It's been helpful.

you're welcome.

Not only that, he hasn't described any conceivable method that a "back-doored" sha256 could be used to attack bitcoin in such a way as to cause damage or loss before it could be replaced if necessary.
Well here is one. A message "Bitcoin was created by a special team authorized by US government" published and signed with Satoshi's PGP key. Although some altcoins will flourish that will be the end of bitcoin.

... and what would that have to with a back-doored sha256?
3845  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 29, 2015, 04:56:24 AM
Sigh.  Is it so hard to believe that someone may be just telling the plain boring truth, for a change?
[snip]
If you have seen enough of my posts, you should know that I *do* try to do serious data analysis, and to understand bitcoin deeper than Antonopoulos-level.  I think I have learned a few things about bitcoin that bitcoiners do not seem to be aware of, or try hard to ignore, or deny because they desperately need them to be false.  I think that this sort of thing is quite appropriate for a computer scientist to "waste" his time on.
[snip]
<image>
<image>
<image>
And so on.  I don't know whether those pokings will yield something that many people will care to know, but, as some famous scientist said, "research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing"...
I have seen many of your posts and they are on topic and not gibberish troll speak however they are usually biased towards a negative view of bitcoin. Then you claim to not own any and that you don't trade, yet you spend most of your time in the speculative thread, not the development or tech sections making me seriously doubt the technical knowledge you claim to have. Being completely honest, you appear to have a more research approach like a columnist or reporter would have.

At the end of it I still don't get it. I'm looking for the why. Are you writing book? I can't figure out why you would put so much effort into something but then not take any part in it.

It's like that other guy said. He's a socialist status-trading statist grinding on here to earn statist status credits.
3846  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has the NSA already broken bitcoin? on: April 29, 2015, 04:53:52 AM
That's because you're only looking at the NSA, and the people who don't see anything wrong are looking at what the code actually does.

Yes, the NSA is a bad actor in several senses.  But you're talking about something which works in a known way that we can see and analyze.  What you're doing is sort of like claiming that there must be a hole in a steel pot because the guy who made the pot is an unethical businessman.  Well, unethical he might be.  He may have made some pots with holes in them.  But it does not mean that every pot he ever made has a hole in it.

People can still look at the pot - inspect it carefully even, test it as a pressure vessel - and find that it does not leak.  Similarly, scores of professional cryptographers and math Ph.D's have analyzed every aspect of SHA2 looking for ways to attack it, and found no leaks.

If we could not see how it worked, or we didn't know how to search for problems, etc, then you'd have a point, but you'd also be meeting with no disagreement.  People would immediately and rightfully reject anything whose workings and structure they could not verify and analyze, notwithstanding whether they trust or do not trust its source.

Not only that, he hasn't described any conceivable method that a "back-doored" sha256 could be used to attack bitcoin in such a way as to cause damage or loss before it could be replaced if necessary.

Total troll, with repeating the same question ad-nauseum, ad-hominems and using willful ignorance to avoid specifics. No-name, throwaway newbie account. Yawn.

We rallied from $240 to $260 after that prediction. As a trader I'll take that any day.

as a "I earn 5 figures a month" trader, yes?

gtfo you clown!

... your public disintegration is getting a little embarrassing, cringeworthy even. Cut some of those underwater shorts?

What would a meltdown mean for Bitcoin?

The network will keep operating and you will still have control of your private keys.

The negative interest rate hall of mirrors is screwing with people's minds enough to wake them up from the Central Bank manipulated price-perception fantasy dream. The monetary CONfidence game may be coming to an end ... feels to me like the Rubicon has been crossed.

nothing new, it seems at this point the reality could simply go beyond the fiction. at least for quite a while. just look at varoufakis exiting negociations by the small door.

I disagree, what is novel here is a mainstream financial editor/writer willing to threaten the centralbank mind-control mantra and say specifically, "This is really, really, f$#%ed up". Fiat money is based purely on perception and Keynesians write papers on "behavioral economics" that fuel the manipulations, jaw-boning, market operations, etc that target price controls. If the illusion begins to dissolve it is over, that is how fragile the current situation is.

That's a bid for 1.75 million.  Just think when the true ETF COIN comes online and a bid like that comes in.  They will have to buy 5000 bitcoins right off the open market to cover the shares.

I don't think the SEC would approve a bitcoin etf

.... it's a done deal.

I know this ETF isn't perfect and it's quite remarkable things have moved this far, but if these delays persist, it's a really less-than-perfect way to trade BTC.

They are patently NOT trading bitcoin.

That's what I'm thinking but I'm not doubting what camolist posted. But boy, this place died very quickly.

Wish the BTC-e rally would be explained.

somebody bought some bitcoins, there explained.

Expecting more fireworks btw.

Open questions;
i) UTXO hash in blockchain is vulnerable to re-orgs, so it needs to be >120 or 288 blocks deep or w/e your 'trust' level is ...

ii) Also some UTXO could discard/prune long unspent dust/spam or other 'bad' TX so not all UTXO sets will be created equal ...

Why so many people are so quick to use weak arguments to defend the use of an nsa algorithm in bitcoin, I don't know.

They are only "weak" in your mind because you admittedly do not know the specifics of what you are arguing.

It is analogous to you saying, we shouldn't use F = M.A (newton's law) because newton was an alchemist in his spare time.

https://www.tlsnotary.org/pagesigner.html

PageSigner is a drastic simplification of the user experience of TLSNotary. You can get a file which proves you visited a webpage with one click in Firefox. No need for Python, key management, or delays (it takes a few seconds). You can pass the file to an auditor at any later date and they can verify it. Watch the walkthrough video on the above page and let us know what you think.

There's a lot more to say, but feel free to give it a try and get back to us with any questions.

Sounds like a major milestone. I'll test it out.

Well i don't think that anonymity was the main goal of bitcoin

Bitcoin is a new design for a fully peer-to-peer electronic cash system. A C++ implementation is under development for release as an open source project.

Main properties:
  - Double-spending is prevented with a peer-to-peer network.
  - No mint or other trusted parties.
  - Participants can be anonymous.

One of the 3 main goals, so your premises are wrong.
3858  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: April 27, 2015, 02:33:13 AM
cool thanks, but I thought unspent outputs would be derived from transactions which would no longer exist in the "backend" node. How does it know the unspent balance without tallying up all of the transactions it was involved in?

The way pruning works is the node still receives all transactions as before. The ones that get spent, it throws away. So the ones left are the ones it keeps in its database. Those are the unspent ones. This requires much less storage.

Makes total sense. Yea I even read that part of the code didn't clue in, duh.

The unspent transaction outputs (UTXO) is the actual distributed ledger. They are contained within the journal of all transactions seen on the network (the blockchain) which needs to be sorted through and filtered for unspent outputs.

You can tell all the "blockchain tech." was a bunch of marketing BS spouted by followers, not leaders, because the blockchain is already obsolete. UTXO is the future Wink and where all the bleeding edge development is happening.

Massive support at 218-200, good time to buy if you still got fiat.. Also a Grexit is getting more and more likely, if this will happen it would be a big boost for Bitcoin.

Do you really reckon that's going to happen? I think the EU leaders will do everything in their power to avoid than scenario. Also, even Greece doesn't really want to get out of the Euro zone. Even if they left, they can't just decide to break off of the world economy. It they don't do their best to get their economy back on track, they'll be getting themselves into serious trouble, I guess...

They could default on their greek government debts, drop out of the eurozone but amend their legal tender laws to allow any currency, including euros, to circulate freely and be used by anyone. That would be their most sane course of action, so it will not happen.

Yeah, that would be a bold move, I guess, but it would effectively wipe out every last remaining drop of trust investors and creditors have left in Greece. Also, I believe this would also pretty much throw Greece's economy back into... the stone age maybe? Or do you think this could be a wise thing to do, actually?

Very, very wise. Investigate Panama, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Scottish free-banking eras. Greece would recover very quickly once they rescinded the massive debts that are strangling them to death and let economic freedoms flourish. All they need is a sound currency footing and a believable commitment to free markets, like any nation.
