Just curious what you guys envision doing with the old cards from S1's S3's and C1's if sidehack does end up producing an upgrade kit?

Are the old boards pretty much scrap at that point? Do they have resale value?

S1 are probably done for, they bring little profit only to people with dirt cheap electricity. S3 are still good imo. I would run all the S3 i could get my hand on.
I guess the S1 extras could be resold to people that want to start little just to learn mining and maybe people who want to run them on free electricity.

if you can profit at 1-1.3w/gh, you can pencil mod the boards low enough to cool them with only a fan, no heatsink. connect a bunch of boards with spacers and a pair of 120mm fans and you can still use them to get 40-60GH/board

however, the modding takes at least 10min/board (closer to 20 all things considered)

I have about 1.1w~/GH, depending on the fan's drain, i run the whole thing, they run at 70gh per board. They're pretty quiet, i like them, they just take a fair bit of space for the hash, but i'll probably bring a few inside my room during winter since at 1krpm they are near silent and they will warm up my room a bit. Smiley

Everything is suddenly more profitable when you need the heat anyways.
3942  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 26, 2015, 03:46:49 PM
whats happening on slash pool is the voting for bigger blocks size .

That's what I thought at first too. But if you look at the pool stats this whale is not pointed at the BIP101 port. And it is a whale, since it's got over 12 PH/s.

Is it a XT port or a BIP101 port? Because those arent the same thing. At all.
3943  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: I am floating an idea here a sidehack usb stick solo pool. on: August 25, 2015, 09:22:27 PM
How would you verify people are using the sidehack stick?

They could just underclock other miners to be around the same Gh/sec.

We can do with proof of purchase. There's not many people involved in NA, not sure about the rest.

Regardless this could be interesting. I was going to slap it on solo ck pool anyways. Slightly better odds for less payout could be doable.

Something has happened here to antpool

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1161655.new#new

9 hours since its last block.

https://www.antpool.com/poolStats.htm

and the networks block count has dropped for today to a 130 block pace

Borked upgrade to XT perhaps?

Whatever it is - thank you AntPool. Your sacrifice is appreciated.

Hmm does that mean Antpool is trying to run on XT or something? o.O

I don't know, I'm just trying to start a rumor  Grin

They finally got a block after 10 hours or so. Thus it make you wonder if something happened or if they were simply very, very unlucky.

I think it's more a hint to me that I need to get off my butt and build him some boards because he's gonna want a bunch of 'em.

I got about half a dozen too. Hint hint. Those S1 are just craving for an upgrade. They REALLY want it. ;P
3948  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 25, 2015, 02:33:40 PM
eh eh... and a USB stick with this BM1385 ?
For a few dollars :-).

That'd be nice. I will get one of the BM1384 one soon. Hopefully sidehack gets his hand on some 1385s.

A sidehack 1385 miner in time for christmas 2015 would be nice.

Even in time for my birthday in Jan 2016 works for me

That would be dope. However i believe sidehack couldn't get more than a prototype going by then assuming he gets the BM1385 fairly soon. Sad
3949  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Antminer S5 Units on: August 25, 2015, 02:04:57 PM
Currently, 350USD is more in BTC than what i paid last month for a S5 from Bitmain so i find it pretty worrisome to make this purchase. However if the BTC price become more sensical, i might be interested in picking up one or two, depending, sometime during next month.

Shipping to Canada should be much less prohibitive than when we considered the S3s.

BTC price will rebound you cant get discouraged just because of a few down days were all here for the long haul. I purchased more bitcoin yesterday I am already up $15 a coin since my buy

Indeed, i merely mean, with the S5 price down and not just BTC, if i wait for BTC to rebound before buying, it will cost me less BTC, thus shorter BTC roi. My train of thoughts anyways.
3950  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would you buy for $300 - $500 on: August 25, 2015, 01:58:03 PM
I was in the same position as the OP a Month ago. Wanted to experience mining but all of the sensible maths said no chance of ROI. Started anyway with a very cheap S1 and understood the basics. Then S3 & S3+ and did the resistor modification to increase the efficiency. At their best they still just make small amounts of money even with my 15 Cent electricity.

The S3's will now go on ebay as I have an S5 which can still be run at it's rated frequency & voltage and make money. If you get the latest rev of S5 (V1.91) (my choice for your money) it can be undervolted and on my maths will still just make money after Bitcoin halving, so has a little way to run.

I will never ROI on any of the hardware costs but just wanted to experience the ride. I set an objective that the money they make must be more than the electricity cost and am happy to right off the hardware cost or get back what I can on ebay at some point. All hobbies have a cost and this one is no different.  Smiley

Rich

Except thats all at your 0.15/kWh. Just good to keep in mind you can get 3-5cents per kWh electricity where running S1 is still profitable and S3 would be probably best for the $/GH.

But again, still waiting for OP to tell me/us his electricity rate Smiley

3952  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin Core needs to die on: August 25, 2015, 10:47:24 AM
Bitcoin Core just need easier modification path with a miner vote system. Switching to XT is definitely not the answer.

Core need to develop an interface with suggested modification, open a debate and then vote Y/N with a signed script from miners/pool with their hashrate. If the vote% is over a certain amount for 1 month then everyone jump.

Maybe in a way that take power away from the minority but.. meh. Just a way to go at it i guess.
3953  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 30 Antminer S5 Units $340 each (Canada) on: August 25, 2015, 09:34:20 AM
This would of been a good deal only if it was in Canadian Funds.

Still worth keeping in mind as its already in Canada. And OP now accept OgNasty as escrow.

Right now this means 1.7BTC so this is definitively too much but when the price match the BTC price, i might be interested. Though i'm surprised they are still here as Allinvain offered to pick them all up in person in another thread.

I did offer him to do that, but he is not willing to budge on the price. For 1.7 it's not a good deal. He likely bough them in bulk and likely already ROIed and now he selling them at the same price bitmain was which means he is likely double profiting. This is of course an assumption but I could be right. Right now the biggest risk factor is the release date of bitmain's S7 miners. If they come soon then buying these S5s would've been a mistake.
I will sell it to you for 1.55 BTC if you come to pick them all up.

You're talking to the wrong person for that, i recommend revisiting Allinvain's offer. I don't know of any other "big enough fish" around here that could do that deal.
3954  Economy / Economics / Re: Do You Think Bitcoin Will Replace Dollar Soon? on: August 25, 2015, 09:29:58 AM
I think it's impossible
the unit price of bitcoin was so large that it is very difficult to use, in contrast to the dollar which has a normal unit price

Why? In term of unit price, you can easily use the cent or the mBtc. And then there's the opposite, currency that are worth 100-1000 time less than the "normal unit price" which work just as well and this in the real world economy.

So how is a deviation of two zeros and worse than real world 3 and 4 unit deviation?

normal is what people define it to be Smiley Bitcoin can be divided into very minute parts and I question if you can really do that with other fiats, keeping the extremity of divisibility apart, I would also also like to question what you define a normal unit price as, I think real world economy could be well understood, if you give it a try Tongue

The user to which i replied to effectively said its not a good currency value because its too large. Then said the US which has a normal unit price. The difference ratio BTC/US is 200:1 atm or so, but i immediately thought of similar currencies, such as the Yen who does 120:1.

Thus personally, any global currency commonly used in the world, such as any country currency or common good is a "normal" range.

Just take gold. Its 1140:1 for an ounce, 36900:1 for a KG. Saying bitcoin's 200:1 is abnormal is just someone's inexperienced opinion, not fact.

To finish my point. Gold is also counted as per G to bring it down to a number easier to handle, where it is about 37:1. So its about choosing your denominators. The unit size is subjectively relevant at best.
3955  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 25, 2015, 09:22:19 AM
On the box fan thing, just get a standard 20x20 furnace filter and fit it to the input of the fan - suction from the fan will hold it in place and it's a GOOD fit for most common box fans like that Lasko one poster linked. No need for special "fan filters".

The one issue with putting fan filters on the S5 fans it that they reduce airflow noticeably. Good for dust reduction IN the unit, but NOT GOOD for keeping them cool. Better to keep the dust out of the room entirely IMO.

That sound a bit expensive, i don't know if you can get those furnace filter for cheap. On ebay you can get boxfan filter net for a few dollars for a pack of them lasting 1month+. If you're going to spend significant money on filter, i'd go with a washable filter.
3956  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hey Lads - Needing some guidance on: August 25, 2015, 09:17:52 AM
Well I guess the bitcoin life just isnt for me Sad Maybe I should look into litecoin instead due to its market growing so iit might be best to pitch in while I can I still can. But does it have the same issues as bitcoin regarding getting started?

yes, sadly it have. and you can apply this logic to literally any crypto out there. simply, you missed the train so as I mentioned above, only possibility is "hobby" mining with low cost gear.

anyway, is quite cool to start playing with it, so don't miss the opportunity to learn cool stuff.

I understand your point as a pure hobby, but It really wasn't my first intentions to get into bitcoin just for the techy side of it, as I like to run everything like a business so I can at least make a few bucks back if its an on going matter. But purely I was more or so interested into to a reasonably profitable sideline task if you will and something I could build up overtime and be proud of all miners I would buy:D. But I guess that I was a bit late arrival to the bit train.

One last note "literally any crypto out there". Does that mean that litecoin and all others are out of my reach? Are there any cyptos that are stable

at 26 cents a kwatt all  coin mining is a loser to you .

Soooo  if you want coins as a money maker buy 1 or 2 and hold it….

 and buy this miner https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1123519.0

it is about 30  for you point it here

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763510.0

this is an all or nothing chance at an entire block (think lottery)  it will cost you 2 or 3 dollars a month to most likely never win .

but since you purchased a few coins  you can win on the stock market type idea of coins.

2 coins are 440 usd today  in a year they could be 550 usd.

Oh on one final note, is cloud mining any good. I am looking at https://hashflare.io

If you are really at .23$/kWh or such, you'll have to look at either cloud mining (not recommended) or miner hosting.

For instance if you get a few miners and host them somewhere cheap, you are probably looking at 1year break even. More or less by quite a bit depending on how cheap you pay per kWh and which hardware you pick and at what price.

If you really want to get to cloud mining i recommend something from a compagny at the very least well known, like hashnest from Bitmain.
https://www.hashnest.com/

But you have to keep in mind they are there to make money off you. So tough deal really.

Oh shit yeah. Haha you guys must be lucky where you live. Per kWh = 0.33$/KwH. I saw that to and obviously they are out to make money too. But Its a good investment, I double my money after a two years, buy more hash, double again. Only thing Is I have to look out for the difficulty considering that, buy no pain no gain. Also with hashnest is it actually lifetime as noted or is there a hidden limit in there contract (the link to TOS is 404ing at the moment for me)

Well they probably have a line that allow them to shutdown if they want. But otherwise if for 10 days the cost/profit ratio is at 100% or higher that specific miner tab contract get disabled and you're allowed to reclaim hardware if you pay them 50$ for handling. Per unit.

And after one year you'd maybe break even != double your money. The thing will probably have devalued greatly. After an additional year you might profit 20-50% over your initial investment, so 10-24% APR? If not 0. Its really not big. Probably a bit better than their pacmic, but nothing like ROI after 3 months with home mining with cheap electricity.

Needless to say, you, and other's points are well taken.

I have just tried the install with Avast running as my virus protector and there was no problem.

No doubt, when it comes time for my Norton renewal, I will certainly take these events into consideration.

BTW: Deciding to move to another virus/system enhancer should not be much of a problem. Apparently, Norton has removed most, if not all, of their system enhancer features from the basic product and put them into the latest version of Norton Utilities. Not a bad idea except for the price for all past features moving from approx. $40 to about $70. What Huh Now we have to pay an extra $30 for the same support features? No!

Bottom line: No Norton upgrade/renewal for me. Ten years of my loyal support down the drain.

Oh well...

I'm more concerned about how vulnerable Norton is against real threat. How ineffective it is at catching generic threat (50% maybe?). Avast is probably better at the free level. I'd say give Avira a try too.

And the free Malwarebyte is fantastic. You just have to run it manually. If your problem is not being able to know what not to click on the internet what you need is some internet security, but there's no foolproof protection when you click random things like grandma.

The best virus protection is you.
3959  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC is dropping fast, but don't panic! on: August 25, 2015, 06:51:10 AM
at least it looks like people won't let it go below $200 for long. got little excited there when the price hit $195..

You are waiting for a good entry point? Around where do you think will be the bottom of this carnage? 120-150? Or above 200?

120$ look improbable, i think there's big players drawing the line at 170$. As if they decided "at that value i will buy ALL the coins" or something. At least that's how it looked last time it crashed to that range.
3960  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 25, 2015, 06:48:20 AM
Thanks Bitmain for creating a next-gen product for home miners!

Sorry, I haven't read this whole thread, but is there an ETA yet for when the S7 will be available?

no why not have some fun with these two threads

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1157489.0;all   free pick at the date

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1159185.0;all  free pick at the price.

you could get lucky cost is zip

I think part of reason of making this thread is to worry other makers.  They were smart to keep same nm and master it.  I think they will be able to make a lot by doing this.

I still wonder on time frame though.  Once they get producing them I predict a lot coming fast of the new product.

Well I think with the smaller nm chips there's a huge problem of power consumption.. Intel is dealing with this now on their new gen stuff in the works.. So Bitmain is the winner here even with LKETC and their 14nm.. The power draw from their new chip will be comparable to bitmains fully custom 28nm

Especially when you consider the difference in production cost. It's probably of different magnitude. 14nm could definitively be able to laugh at 28nm in W/GH ratio if properly optimized but i don't think the development cost is going to be able to compete.

As usual, China win with cheap mass production.
