Ever used a microwave to cook something in one minute?

Why do you not prepare your meal from scratch (wheat, pluck the chicken, milk the cow, etc.)?

Are you saying that the microwave turning our cooking time from a half day to one minute has not allowed people to do more with their lives?

Look at 100 years ago...all of those carriage manufacturers and horse breeders and horse shit shovelers who lost their jobs because of the automobile (that was mainly reserved for the rich).

Now practically everyone has a car that has more intelligence than the rocket that took men to the moon.

What do you not have right now that cheap manufacturing could give you?

DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE IMAGINATIONS?

Not the question. not saying it's a bad thing.

Problem is not technology development. The problem is WHO will profit of the technological development Wink

Yes, because who profits is the most important thing when it comes to innovation.   Roll Eyes

Today´s worker basically wipes the asses of other people. Once robots can do that humans soon won´t be needed in the entire service industry. Manufacturing gone, services gone, what then?

Ever seen Star Trek or any futuristic show?

People do a lot of cool things. Things that are accomplished because they spend less time wiping people's butts and more time thinking up cool things to do. And with robots...they can do them.

Star trek or any futuristic show? We´re talking the next 20-30 years tops here. Manufacturing, services gone, what´ll be left for humans to do? Cool things? It´ll have to be entire cool industries. Inventing new jobs won´t do.

One industry will be...robot industry.

And this industry will create enough jobs to replace the ones it destroyed? Roll Eyes

I don't think so...

Not just that one industry but all of the industries that pop up because of the cheap manufactured goods.

Look at Hong Kong, they have zero manufacturing but are a vibrant economy.

Correcton:
Look at Honk Kong and Switzerland and Luxembourg and Ireland they have zero manufacturing but are a vibrant economy as they're actually the 4 places in the world companies send money to in order to avoid taxes.

They are not very good places for sending money to avoid taxes. Especially Switzerland.

Places like Turks & Caicos, the Cayman Islands, Belize, the Bahamas and a few others are the best places for that. Ireland is pretty decent though.

For the luddites, an excerpt from a fun little book that makes a good point:

Quote
Just as he lost sight of the beach and was deep in the jungle,
he heard a sharp scream. He stopped, cocked his head, and tried
to locate the source of the sound. Directly ahead, he heard another
shrill cry for help. Pushing up an incline and through a mass of
branches and vines, he clawed his way forward and stumbled onto
a wider path.
As he rounded a sharp bend in the trail, Jonathan ran full tilt into
the side of a burly man. “Out of my way, chump!” bellowed the
man, brushing him aside like a gnat. Dazed, Jonathan looked up and
saw two men dragging a young woman, kicking and yelling, down
the trail. By the time he caught his breath, the trio had disappeared.
Certain that he couldn’t free the woman alone, Jonathan ran back up
the trail looking for help.
A clearing opened and he saw a group of people gathered around
a big tree – beating it with sticks. Jonathan ran up and grabbed the
arm of a man who was obviously the supervisor. “Please sir, help!”
gasped Jonathan. “Two men have captured a woman and she needs
help!”
“Don’t be alarmed,” the man said gruffl y. “She’s under arrest.
Forget her and move along, we’ve got work to do.”
“Arrest?” said Jonathan, still huffi ng. “She didn’t look like, uh,
like a criminal.” Jonathan wondered, if she was guilty, why did
she cry so desperately for help? “Pardon me, sir, but what was her
crime?”
“Huh?” snorted the man with irritation. “Well, if you must know,
she threatened the jobs of everyone working here.”
Chapter 2 • Troublemakers
6
“She threatened people’s jobs? How did she do that?” asked
Jonathan.
Glaring down at his ignorant questioner, the supervisor motioned
for Jonathan to come over to a tree where workers busily pounded
away at the trunk. Proudly, he said, “We are tree workers. We knock
down trees for wood by beating them with these sticks. Sometimes
a  hundred  people,  working  round-the-clock,  can  knock  down  a
good-sized tree in less than a month.” The man pursed his lips and
carefully brushed a speck of dirt from the sleeve of his handsomely
cut coat.
He  continued,  “That  Drawbaugh  woman  came  to  work  this
morning with a sharp piece of metal attached to the end of her stick.
She cut down a tree in less than an hour – all by herself! Think of
it! Such an outrageous threat to our traditional employment had to
be stopped.”
Jonathan’s eyes widened, aghast to hear that this woman was
punished for her creativity. Back home, everyone used axes and
saws for cutting trees. That’s how he got the wood for his own
boat. “But her invention,” exclaimed Jonathan, “allows people of all
sizes and strengths to cut down trees. Won’t that make it faster and
cheaper to get wood and make things?”
“What do you mean?” the man said angrily. “How could anyone
encourage an idea like that? This noble work can’t be done by any
weakling who comes along with some new idea.”
“But sir,” said Jonathan, trying not to offend, “these good tree
workers have talented hands and brains. They could use the time
saved from knocking down trees to do other things. They could
make tables, cabinets, boats, or even houses!”
“Listen, you,” the man said with a menacing look, “the purpose
of work is to have full and secure employment – not new products.”
The tone of his voice turned ugly. “You sound like some kind of
troublemaker. Anyone who supports that infernal woman is trouble.
Where are you from?”
Chapter 2 • Troublemakers
7
Jonathan replied anxiously, “I don’t even know Miss Drawbaugh
and I don’t mean any trouble, sir. I’m sure you’re right. Well, I
must be going.” With that, Jonathan turned back the way he came,
hurrying down the path.

The fact that 90% of bitcoin holders bought bitcoins just to "get more fiat money" means that they all have a sell point and there will be very few huge run-ups.

But that's ok because it creates liquidity and stabilizes the price so bitcoin can actually be used as a currency.

People worrying about jobs...there will just be new jobs to replace the old jobs.

We used to have people who's job was to copy books by hand. They did not all die when it was automated. Telephone operators used to route your call, then it was automated. There was not a widespread epidemic of dying telephone operators.

As technology advances, we are able to do more. And that requires more people.

People used to wake up, spend all day either gathering their food or preparing the food or preparing to get through winter. Now we spend a tiny percentage of our productivity on feeding ourselves giving us time for tons of other things.

Technology will just ensure that even less of our productivity is spent on our essential needs.

Yeah but the amount of jobs created is ALWAYS lower than the amount of jobs destroyed Wink

So, now that we have technology to create books we never made up for the amount of scribes who lost their jobs?
3970  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Video: Atlas, The Next Generation on: February 25, 2016, 02:35:27 PM
Human jobs are not so important, new jobs will appear this is true!

This will be used for killing people no doubt. Perfect soldier, no questions just seek and destroy!
If you ask me i love technology. but story will be the same as for the atomic power.
Primary use will be for destruction!

Humans are not used for most modern warfare anyway, other than being the guy 3000 miles away pulling the trigger.

At last night’s Democratic town hall, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo asked Hillary Clinton to explain why she continues to withhold the transcripts of speeches she gave to several Wall Street banks between 2013 and 2015, for which she earned $2.5 million. You can watch the exchange above, or read the transcript below:

Chris Cuomo: Earlier tonight, I asked Senator Sanders, will you give your transcripts of speeches—that’s what you said, when the others give, then I’ll give—he said he doesn’t have any bank speeches, if he can find any of the speeches he did give for money, he will gladly give the transcripts up. So: Will you agree to release these transcripts? They have become an issue.

Clinton: Sure, if everybody does it, and that includes the Republicans, because we know they have made a lot of speeches.
After adding some boilerplate about how she intends to regulate the U.S. financial industry, Cuomo interjected:

Cuomo: All the more reason to remove this as an issue. You know everybody’s not going to bring up their transcripts—they’re’ll be a hundred reasons—

Clinton: Why is there one standard for me, and not for everybody else, Chris? [applause]
Clinton’s justification for not releasing these speeches largely mirrors what she told ABC News earlier this month: “Let everybody who’s ever given a speech to any private group under any circumstances release them. We’ll all release them at the same time.”

This logic is absurd. The reason there’s a different standard for Clinton is that she is the only candidate in this race who, after personally accepting millions of dollars from Wall Street banks, decided to run for President on a platform of regulating those banks. Her sustained evasion last night is particularly ridiculous because, two days after her ABC News interview, the public learned that, during a 2013 speech to Goldman Sachs, Clinton reportedly acted and spoke like a Goldman executive hoping to rally the banks’ rank-and-file for another profitable quarter. One attendee told Politico, “In this environment, it could be made to look really bad.”

It’s become increasingly clear that the content of these speeches are, in fact, highly damaging to Clinton’s self-rendered image as a tough Wall Street regulator. What else could explain her repeated refusals to release them to the public?

Hillary Clinton’s Wall Street Speeches Must Be Really Bad

Clinton is fighting, no just to become president, but to stay out of jail too.

No fan of Clinton but she should not have to release the transcripts of her speeches. She knows they will be used against her just like Romney's speech in front of a bunch of rich people. Those that want to see the speeches just want to use them against her and she knows it.

Though if something comes out during her trial about revealing classified information at these events then she will have to.

3976  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Are you with or against "the U.K. quits the European Union" ? on: February 24, 2016, 04:13:15 PM
Sounds good but actually not entirely true. I can write only about Hungary, but I've heard about the same issues in Poland as well. The healthcare and education system is deteriorating since we joined the EU as all the highly skilled doctors and nurses moved to the west. Agriculture is now in the hands of a few oligarchs as the farmers and small agro-businesses were unable to compete against the much more subsidized Austrian, French and German farmers. Local industry practically disappeared as skilled workers also went to the western countries and local workshops are only manufacturing some small scale but complicated and work intensive parts for big western corporations. Apart from a thin middle and upper class living standards are actually going down since the early 2000s. There are more malnourished child and pensioner today than 20 years ago. Also a lot more people living under the official poverty threshold limit than back in the 90's.

I didn't said that the EU accession of the former Warsaw Pact was 100% positive. It was more like 80% positive, and 20% negative. Obviously, when you are transforming from the Communist / Socialist system to the Capitalist system, the oligarchs will be able to steal a large chunk of the national wealth. This has happened in almost all the countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, and Hungary. Perhaps Belarus is the only exception because it is still under a dictatorship.

Emigration of skilled workers is a major issue, but there are partial solutions to resolve this. For example, to compensate the doctors and other healthcare workers who are migrating to the Western European nations, you can import physicians from Ukraine and Serbia. Factory workers can be sourced from Moldova and Macedonia.

And I strongly suspect that the fall in living standards might be because of the emigration of the middle class. The government should encourage them to return, with their hard earned money. Hungary won't be as expensive as England or Germany. The returnees will be able to live much more comfortably, than they are doing currently.

Obviously. Because Socialism is the worst thing ever whereas Capitalism is plain Heaven!

Damn I don't understand, why are people like you staying in EU?
You wanna free capitalism? Go to the USA! They'll have exactly what you want! low immigration, death penalty, gun freedom, no social healthcare or welfare...

Capitalism is dead in the US.

I have some friends that are always trying to convert me to their athiesm religion. I'm just not convinced. But they do proselytize quite a bit.

It's interesting that while most theists here call atheists "anti-religion", other theists call it a religion. It rather confusing, so can you guys present us with a unified front?

Atheism isn't a religion because there's no God and ritual practices, which define a religion. They also doesn't have a "book" to rely on.

There are no atheism books? No meetings or conventions/gatherings? No common beliefs which are espoused by respected elders for others to follow during their path to becoming the best atheist they can be?

Everyone is the same?

Well, it would make it easier.

Why do you think atheism is a religion? It certainly doesn't espouse supernatural beliefs.

Just the sheer amount of people that are always trying to convert me to athiesm.
