3981  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Trezor, Ledger, and Passport: The TOS and Privacy Policy Battles on: August 25, 2022, 05:28:14 PM
As someone who ships a lot, I can confirm almost no business will ship to a PO Box anymore, especially if it's cross border shipping. This has been the case for 20 years or so, I can't remember the last time PO Box was used anymore. Even if they don't explicitly say they don't send to PO Boxes, you'll likely get a message back from them asking to change yr delivery address if you give PO.
Easy alternative is to rent some old ruin house or small land property in your city surroundings, use it exclusively for delivering packages from abroad and domestic, and nobody can deny delivery.
This is something people are doing to preserve some privacy if they are often ordering items with international shipping, and I know for a fact it's working fine in some countries.
It could be even cheaper than renting regular PO boxes if you find some good deal, and you don't even need to spend any time there.
3982  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Wallet Label Export Format: A Proposal by Craig Raw on: August 25, 2022, 05:12:39 PM
It's a BIP from Craig Raw of Sparrow Wallet that specifies a human readable export format for wallet labels (in CSV), and how users should write such files so they can be imported into wallets. It has received some discussion already.
Sparrow wallet is my first alternative option for Electrum wallet, I love it's design, functionality and support for various devices and hardware wallets.
Exporting Labels already exist in Electrum wallet, but turning this into BIP and making labels import/exports for all different supported wallets is a great idea.
I am not sure how exactly BIPs get approved and accepted, but I don't see why anyone would be against this proposition, unless there are some disadvantages ands risks I am not aware of.

3983  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Do pruned nodes help the network? on: August 25, 2022, 04:49:23 PM
Yeah, anything that requires motion is going to be the biggest power consumptions. So, ideally you'd be running it on a SD card potentially, and without a fan. Then, you'll have the least power consumption as possible.
Raspberry Pi 400 works like that, there is no fan just one big metalic heatsink, and it's not spending more than 5w according to various tests, that is much less than any laptops.
I don't know any modern laptop without fan (except some with ARM processors like Pinebook or MNT reform) and I think it wont last very long without fan cooler.
35w or 45w is standard for processors but you can always tweak settings in BIOS and make it draw less power with underclocking.

If the CPU doesn't overheat without the fan, it can't draw that much power. I've seen laptops with CPUs that take 45W, those wouldn't last without a working fan.
Those laptops with 45w CPUs also needs stronger power adapters, usually stronger than 90w and you can't charge laptop battery without them.
3984  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Do pruned nodes help the network? on: August 25, 2022, 11:35:14 AM
You could probably measure this by getting one of those power consumption plug ins, and running both a pruned, and full node for an extended time. I doubt anyone has looked as this though.
I have one of this devices you can plug in electric socket and measure how electricity is spent by any device, but I never tested this with laptop running bitcoin node.
If someone wants to save on electric bills I would rather use Raspberry Pi, that spends much less than any laptop but downside is much slower cpu speed.
Bigger older screens with higher resolution needs more power, but you don't really need screen all the time.
3985  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Unique Wallet address. on: August 25, 2022, 11:22:21 AM
But the fact is. I have a habit of collecting unique things. In case of make a metamusk wallet for myself i tried to get an unique address like (0x00000aaaa.....) and i select one. i got the seeds too. But I'm confused, if i use that address, anyone are able to access my wallet?
You can create custom unique addresses in Bitcoin using VanitySearch or similar software, and nobody is going to use that address other than you.
Only way this could happen is if you somehow made a mistake and leaked your private key or someone else got access to your computer device, so it's better to always keep private key offline.
3986  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Do pruned nodes help the network? on: August 25, 2022, 11:17:33 AM
Hello, I've an old laptop which I can let open 24/7, but it has low storage (160 GB), so I can't run a full node. Does a prune nodes helps the network, if I allow incoming connections?
How old is your laptop exactly, what processor it has, and is 160 GB storage SSD or HDD?
It's sure safer to run pruned node than regular spv wallets with using someone else node, but I am not sure how much this contributes to the network.

I wouldn't run a laptop just for this. It's not worth the electricity, and considering it has a small disk, it's probably low on RAM too.
Can you estimate how much electricity is spent for running pruned node compared to running normal laptop system?
I think old laptops spend a lot of energy for screens and processors, but turning off screen can reduce consumption.
Used RAM is cheap so I don't think that would be a problem, if it's not soldered and can be upgraded.
3987  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Voltage.cloud on: August 25, 2022, 10:54:54 AM
Has anyone here used this service before? whether it was for BTCPayServer hosting or LN nodes. I'd like to hear some feedback, and maybe a comparison between them and some other similar services.
I never tried it, but I checked their pricing and it could be interesting if you want to run light node on Tor with BTCPayserver, but for anything more serious it's way to expensive.
Maybe try sending PM to BitGoba, he is our local Lightning Network expert and I think he tried everything currently available for LN Smiley
Interesting thing about VoltageCloud is that Alphabet invested a lot of money in their business.
3988  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware wallet FUD (nonce attacks, unofficial firmware, etc) on: August 24, 2022, 09:04:10 PM
If all of this is true and COLDCARD can suddenly rugpull everyone, what hope does Bitcoin have?
You are watching to much sci-fi movies and Coldcard has nothing to do with someone having hope for Bitcoin, it's just nonsense.

First, you have hardware wallets with open source firmware code so anyone can inspect and see what is happening, there are no hidden stuff for Trezor, Codlcard, Keystone, Passport, etc.
For Trezor you can even identify all hardware components and make your own DIY device, but they are also working on new prototype secure element chip, that should improve security a lot.
Coldcard is not exactly open source anymore, but you can still verify it's code and I don't think it's dangerous to use it, unless some major bug happens.
Closed source hardware wallets like Ledger, Safepal, etc are much more dangerous, and you could never know if they have some secret junk inside, so I would stay away from them.

Speaking about open source firmware, you should be aware that almost all laptops and computers have closed source bios, so it's much bigger chance of something leaking from there, unless you have coreboot or something like that.
Intel and AMD are constantly sending information and they have whole hidden mini operating system inside with Intel Management and AMD equivalent.
Now, keeping laptop offline can help, but it's not perfect protection at all.
3989  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 24, 2022, 08:11:58 PM
If the OP's wallet turns out to be one of the same batch and it's just some trickery or worse, then we got punked just the same.  It would also mean these last 10 pages and deep discussions of ethics and mushrooms was all for nothing.
Hey I like good quality mushrooms, they are multipurpose food and you can make pizzas with them, plus I can destroy all evidence of it's ownership really quickly.

Very interesting!  I just went back to re-read the few replies after easternklaas made that post; it seems like all of us missed the implications of the "concealed code" he referenced.  In light of what dkbit98 found on reddit, it seems like the OP's wallet is just a ruse.
You want to hear one of my wild theories?
What if member easternklaas was actually creator and maker of this fake paper wallet, and he used bitcointalk forum just as promotion for his ''product''.
I can't prove anything and it's juts my speculation, maybe because I had a funny (detective) feeling about this subject all the time.

This would mean that the Reddit OP has no idea about Bitcoin though, right? I mean: 'access the account'? Which account? There are no Bitcoin accounts.
It must be targeted at people who don't actually know this. People who think a website saying: 'here is an address with X Bitcoin on it, send us $50 to access it' isn't something out of the ordinary. Roll Eyes
There was probably a link or a QR code that was opening some fake exchange with account and fake balance.
Like I said before, something similar is available online for years, and they distribute links with discord, telegram, etc.
Account of this reddit guy is from 2012, so anyone can contact him to find more information about his story.

3991  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Megathread] Bitcoin Layer 1 Privacy - concepts, ideas, research, discussion on: August 24, 2022, 07:41:47 PM
I guess if you disable z2t by default, like tromp just said, they would kind of be forced to do allow depositing / withdrawing 'private coins'. With Zcash, they kind of have the power of choice as it's a lower marketcap and it's technically possible to go from shielded to transparent. But if we disable this on the by far biggest market cap asset by default, they kind of have to follow suit.
Or they would just delist Zcash from this exchanges, and they don't have to explain why.
I don't like Zcash for several reasons, and it has even worse history than monero, but some security experts like Edward Snowden thinks it's good for privacy.
Lightning Network is fine and more people is using it, but I am nor sure it's the best option for for transacting large amounts of money, and we don't know what tech Chainalysis and others are using from tracking.
Sad thing is that most people don't care at all about privacy until it's to late.  Tongue
3992  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Crypto Mixer developers are arrested in Netherlands on: August 24, 2022, 07:10:00 PM
Ethereum may or may not be a security, but there are some questionable things about it's future.  The main issue I have with ETH has is that it's a shitty protocol, and the more experienced and astute crypto enthusiasts will eventually grow weary of it.
I thought this shit is going to be world computer with everything put on the blockchain  Tongue
This never gets old:

Lol, dkbit98, are you telling me you're not a fan of Bill Gates?  I know you and I have butted heads about Microsoft's products in the past, so it may surprise you to learn that I too am not a fan.  There are plenty of reasons to deride Bill Gates, but this is not one of them, in my opinion.
Can you or somebody else show me any real code that mister Bill Gates actually wrote, not including stuff he stole from other people?
He is not a developer, and on that videos he certainly looks like a lunatic and mentally unstable person, only thing I like about that is cake in his face Smiley
That doesn't mean that I am supporting US (or any other) government for arresting code developers, but it's not anything new... remember e-gold or read more about it.
If you go further in history you would see how governments even arrested people who own gold, or walk on the same ide of street with people of different skin color.
It's irony that people who created United States did that because of high British Empire taxes, and now they live in the land with highest taxes ever  Tongue
Now they are arresting developers, tomorrow they could arrest anyone for anything, or maybe they already can do that.
3993  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: preev.net - what it should have and how it should look? on: August 24, 2022, 06:55:21 PM
as for the design itself, is the initial version of the preev.com site really that good, so most similar services copy it?
I think that default design is clean and good so I wouldn't make any drastic changes, but few improvements are fine.
Maybe adding mBTC along with BTC and Sats value would be nice, since this is one of the most popular bitcoin units used on many websites.

is it really necessary to have all possible currencies, for example, 170 FIAT and 5k+ cryptocurrencies? Or top 10 or 20 from CMC is enough?
I would waste time and resources listing many shitcoins, but adding British Pound and some major fiat currencies could be useful.
If you don't want to break current page style maybe you can create separate Settings menu on bottom.

how many sources should be used to calculate the mean value, and what are the relevant sources that must be included?
Using aggregator middle value is best option for me (Coingecko is fine), but you could add fallback values with several top exchanges.

do you keep a page like this open all the time, to keep track of the current value? which update timer is desirable in that case?
Don't fetch value to often or they could ban access to their API.
I think checking every minute is fine, but it can be lowered to 20 or 45 seconds.

I saw some interesting features like the historical price that were liked by some members. whether such things are necessary? I would say more possibilities mean less simplicity but if there is an add-on that can be very useful, why not?
On very rare occasions I check historic values do it's not something I would use, and there must be a way to verify that price was like that according to reliable sources.
3994  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Preev is down, Im happy to announce the official launch of Pnnv.com on: August 24, 2022, 06:26:30 PM
It's been tested on Safari, Chrome, Firefox it's all working well except for TOR.
I directly connect with binance and bitstamp with API - my developer will add much more resources.
It's working fine now and showing correct btc value, but you may want to use some fallback API server in case default one is not working correctly due to some policies from Bitstamp.
Using single exchange is fine but I prefer having middle value of multiple reliable exchanges with high volume, something like aggregator value.

3995  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX froze user account for sending coins to privacy roll up on: August 24, 2022, 06:00:57 PM
I also used to criticize exchanges, however, they do not have a choice, I reckon. They are required to stay compliant with regulations or they will have their business license and other licenses for operation to be removed. They will also be having the risk of lawsuits.
Nobody forced them to create and own centralized exchanges, and they can move it to some other countries or work on becoming decentralized.
With that attitude nobody would ever create anything useful for people (Bitcoin for example), if only blindly following new draconian rules and regulations.

Jesse Powell, the CEO of Kraken has always been in support of privacy for the community, however, if he is given the choice of keeping Kraken in operation or go against a lawsuit, I am quite sure he will choose Kraken.
Support for privacy is shown if you stand up and choose to fight for what is right, but I guess real problem is that not enough people care about privacy.

There really are enough DEX out there for people to use, if they choose not to use them, then that is on them.
I only know about only one real DEX and that is Bisq.
Everything else is Vaporware and it has nothing to do with decentralization.
3996  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Shorter privatekey on: August 24, 2022, 04:03:47 PM
I just want generate the privatekey to get own address.
Can anyone suggest me shorter privatekey please?
Easy way to export private keys and import them quickly is by using QR codes, so you don't have to worry if key is short or long.
You can print this using your own printer at home (if you have it) or you can even draw it on paper using square spaces something like SeedSigner is doing.
Whatever method you choose you should always test to see if private keys are correct, and make several backup copies.

John McAfee bi ipak mogao biti živ (ili ne)... to tvrdi njegova bivša Samantha Herrea u novom Newtflix dokumentarcu Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee.

3998  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Buying a Hardware Wallet in US on: August 23, 2022, 06:44:15 PM
My conditions are:

  • Under 100 USD
  • Available to buy in USA
  • Preference to buy in a store (not mandatory)
You have very limited choice for under 100 USD budget, only Trezor Model One or Ledger Nano S plus, but I would never spend a single dollar on ledger products.
I know BestBuy in US is selling hardware wallets but I would suggest looking for official resellers, or you simply buy wallet in shops available in your own country, before you go traveling.
My suggestion is to only choose open source hardware wallets like Trezor, BitBox02, Keystone or Passport (not easy to buy it now).

Alternative option you can do is to buy Rasberry Pi zero and use is as signing device for Bitcoin, turning it into SeedSigner.
You can also do just fine if you use some offline laptop dedicated for Bitcoin transactions.

Adding some more information I found about upcoming Trezor prototype chip, and I didn't see this posted before or I missed it somehow.
Prototypes and the mass production of truly open integrated circuit chips are going to be made by UMC, a leading manufacturer of semiconductors from Taiwan.
UMC headquarter is in Hsinchu, Taiwan, but good thing they are located in different locations in mainland China, as well as in Japan and Singapore.

4000  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Biometrics as private key? on: August 23, 2022, 06:12:54 PM
From a geek novelty perspective I think it's a cute idea to screw with-- but with a security hat on I think biometrics are across the board a bad idea and the best you can say about them is that they haven't yet been proven to be completely worthless yet.
That makes you question why there is such a big push for using biometrics for everything.  Undecided
China and some other countries are already starting to use features like Pay With Face or Pay With Palm, and they market this as safest and most convenient way for payment.
All this data is held on some central server and it's connected with all your history, money, social credit system and social media accounts...
So if you had some accident and you mess up your face, or you disobey supreme ruler, you can't pay or use anything in this stupid system.
