41  Other / Meta / Re: How Do You Feel About This New System?? on: March 09, 2018, 11:29:13 AM
I think most people stop posting spam posts the moment they get in to a campaign.

And they should keep posting spam posts:

1) If they are not a part of a campaign.
2) If the campaign gets over and till they are accepted in another campaign

What type of suggestion is this ? I can understand that a new member might not be aware about the rules of the forum or the requirements for being eligible for bounties. But maximum 30 days is sufficient for getting used to the forum. If you keep making shit posts even after this, strict action must be taken by the staff as it hampers the forum quality.
42  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Stat from theymos data on: March 09, 2018, 11:19:00 AM
they have formed friendships and create acquaintances here on the forum which leads to them being looked favorably upon in the posts. Also, hero members are bound to give out the most merit as nearly all of the merit sources are at least hero or above.

This is something the admin never wanted with the merit post. He has mentioned that one should not give merits to a post just because he agrees to it. Also, giving merits to friends is wrong in my opinion. If you are giving them a benefit for being a friend and awarding merit to their posts over that of a new member, it is  partiality for the new member. The new members will then feel discouraged to see this and even those capable of contributing valuable posts here will leave. I am sure the admin never wanted to achieve this with the merit system.
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin Is Too Complicated for Average People! on: March 08, 2018, 11:11:59 AM
Bitcoin is not complicated to common people, it depends on people how to use their bitcoin properly. Even though it's common people they can show how they can run or follow the same as those who are tall.

I have said it many times and I will repeat it again, it all comes down to interest. For learning any new subject, only two things are required, first is the need and second is the interest. For instance, let us take the subject of mathematics. Some of the students are able to do great in this subject, these are the ones who have interest in the subject. Those finding it difficult are the students who fail to generate any interest in the subject. All this applies to bitcoins as well. if a person finds it interesting, he will not find it complicated.
44  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is Bitcoin required to pay taxes? on: March 08, 2018, 11:08:59 AM
In my country also you  are required to pay the taxes on bitcoin investment but there is no separate tax on the bitcoin earnings. Just calculate your bitcoin earnings in a financial year and add it to your yearly income (by job or business). You have to pay the tax as per the income bracket you belong to. For the highest tax bracket, you have to pay 30%. If the total income does not reach the minimum tax bracket, you need not pay any tax. In that tax, you do not have to pay any tax on bitcoin profit. Most of the students belong to this category.
45  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin dropped by $2k on: March 08, 2018, 11:01:49 AM
As all of you know that the value dropped from a solid $11.5k to $9.5 recently. Could BitMex, the trading platform for bitcoin on other cryptos, where some users who had difficulty logging into its platform be one of the reasons for it?

People not being able to login will not result in decrease in the price. I have not come across any authentic news that could effect bitcoin price this bad. But I was reading a post here today and it was mentioned there that some person has sold 400 million worth bitcoins and is not finished yet. This might be the reason for increased supply and thus prices coming down. A lot of people will follow this or sell in panic if the news is true. I never thought that we will see such a price decline in such a short time again.
46  Other / Meta / Re: A good way to obtain merit points on: March 08, 2018, 10:57:51 AM
The conclusion of your whole post is to stay active and post widely across the forum by participating in discussions or starting new ones in order to get merits, but one more thing is to avoid spam, your post should contribute in threads.

But what i believe is you can earn more merits if you post naturally by contributing in threads you understand, instead of roaming around the forum in different sections without having core knowledge of the particular board or section.

That is why new members should spend more time reading here as they might not be having knowledge about any section. Best section to start with is meta if you had been active on other forums in the past. Go through the forum rules and common problems that members here face related to their account. Then reply to queries being asked by new memembers in meta and get rewarded.

Wow,  2 users above are so alike! Same activity and merits counts, participating in the same bounty campaign, has same local time. Siblings?  Grin

Sorry for off-topic. I think a good way is to bash anyone who against merit and call him shitposter and whiner.  Then give him a trivial advice to work hard and write quality posts.

I checked the whole thread to find them and they do look suspicious. I think the campaign manager may be able to find if they are alt accounts based on the writing style.
47  Other / Meta / Re: What you need to write to get Merit on: March 08, 2018, 10:53:53 AM
Theres no way to guarantee merits on your posts, just make helpful meaningful posts and keep doing it.

This is your first post here and you have already figured out how to succeed with the merit system. Looks suspicious to me and this can be an alt account.

They say writing a quality post will attract others to give you merit, but most often it doesn't happen, one thing I know is you just have to be you, post on threads that you know you can answer well, post naturally and no need to push yourself too much. Someone will give you one soon.

You are right that sometimes your good posts will not get recognized as there is so much of competition. The solution to this issue is that all your posts should be of high quality. Once some of your posts are noticed , members will start recognizing your efforts. They may check  the posts made by you in the past and merit you. Sometimes while making reply in a thread, I had merited posts which were made 5-6 days back.
48  Other / Meta / Re: Increase posting cosmetic quality - increase chance of getting more merit on: March 08, 2018, 10:49:45 AM
I am not much fan of those editing tools. A lot of members try to experiment with different font sizes or font colors to be unique but it looks irritating to me. Instead of spending time on those useless activities, you should focus on the content of the post.

If you are making a helpful reply to a query, the person asking the question will certainly appreciate. Using any other kind of shortcut is not going to give any benefit. However, if there are two replies with similar content , then presentation may give you an upper hand but it really depends on the reader.
49  Other / Meta / Re: How to earn merits easily ? on: March 08, 2018, 10:45:47 AM
I think earning merits is not that easy.
Actually, we could make some posts such as making tutorials but no one give us any thing (I mean merit), I saw many people in mining community, they posted a lot of helpful things, so just look, they havent got any merit.  Of course nothing is perfect, I still think merit system is a nice thing, it encourages people who want to get upper rank make better thing, not just sitting there and posting around.

I'm lucky as I got 1 merit from one of my hero/idol in mining community, it's enough, for me, that's the meaning of merit.

I think you should make those tutorials related to the forum system and then post in meta. If you can give more time and create a thread showing stats related to a particular change like merit system, you can also get some appreciation. A lot of members did this and got good number of merits. Here is an example of such thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3078328.0

Note that it will take some hours to create a detailed thread like this but it is worth it as a lot of members here will benefit from it.
50  Other / Meta / Re: Does merit really helping the forum. on: March 08, 2018, 10:38:43 AM
Merit system is good, to improve the quality of posting a member, so with merit, posting members not just to meet the individual targets in the campaign.

No doubt about this, and this is why the admin introduced this merit system.

But I think merit is not very effective if given by fellow members, it's good if the merit is given by the moderator, maybe it will be fairer because each person or member has different views in assessing the post quality or not  Grin

Now there are both advantages and disadvantages of merits being given by fellow members. The benefit is that by allowing fellow members to give merits to posts of other person, the work load on the staff is reduced. Indirectly, the members are moderating the good posts by giving them merits. But the disadvantage of this feature is that some members are not honest and are thus giving those merits to alt accounts.
51  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Stat from theymos data on: March 08, 2018, 10:35:36 AM
We really need to increase the number of merits in circulation. We should not create a situation where members do not have enough merits to send to a deserving person. I have seen merit giveaway threads where the member starting the thread had to lock it as his Smerits got spend on initial applicants. In order to increase the merits in circulation- two things can be done. First is increasing the number of merit sources. Admin added some but they are not sufficient. Another option is to increase the number of merits given to each merit source per month.
52  Other / Meta / Re: technically it became impossible for me to ever become Sr. or even ful member? on: March 08, 2018, 10:30:04 AM
Thanks to merit system...i have lost all hopes now to rank up any way close to Sr.Member or even Full member ever...i think the users like me are in huge disadvantage now...because i dont think many users care about giving merit to anyone...i think if givers are 10 and recievers are thousands or even more in the ratio..even if some day i get lucky and some one give me merit...it will take many decades to reach Sr.Member like that...
Also the fact that a user can give only half the merit he recieved and all those concepts i think are huge disadvantage for a user like me...
I know this issue has been raised many times and i shared my feeling which is this is really unfair for all the users like me

Your first target should be to achieve the member rank which requires only 10 merit points. You have got 0 so far and thus you are doing something wrong for sure. Please do not spend your energy on wrong things. You are wasting time on something you cannot control i.e change in the forum rules. I am sure that the admin will make necessary changes to the merit system if he feels like. Based on the past threads making similar complaints like the one you made, I think it will take at least 5-r months.
53  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: March 08, 2018, 10:27:07 AM
Might it be an idea to give everyone who posts consistently a base rate of 5 merit per month or something similar? This way at least you can still earn a little bit of merit. Currently it is very hard to get merit, since it's all about other peoples opinion's of your posts. I do think it's good to reward good quality posting, but maybe some consistent stream of a little bit of merit will at least help to get a bit closer to the next goal every time, even though you still would have to make quality posts.

It is not a good idea to award merit points based on activity because all those merits can be manipulated. Members will use multiple accounts to gather those 5 merits points per month in all accounts and then use them to rank up one main account to higher level. This will defeat the purpose of merit system and we will have more spam here. I agree that it is hard to get merits and thus rank up. One practical solution I see to this is to increase merit sources to a good number. We should have 500 merit sources or above but only an admin can tell if we have so many honest and responsible members here.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 10 years and no country has approved Bitcoin ?? on: March 03, 2018, 02:11:42 PM
Majority of the countries are positive about cryptocurrencies, bitcoin has been around for 10 years but the government just paid attention to it just recently when thevalue of bitcoin surpases that of gold, the government are trying to regulate bitcoin and devising ways for the government to benefit as well. Countries like Israel and Japan imposes taxes for bitcoin investment just like any other type of investment in their country.

It is funny but some countries have noticed its citizens investing money in bitcoins only after it was in the news for hitting $15000 mark. For instance, the Indian government had been making a lot of statements regarding bitcoins after December 2018. They have not yet approved the bitcoins but a lot of people are investing here .

I was surprised to hear that there had been exchanges operating in India for last 8 years. I am sure that they got all the permission from government authorities before carrying out business here.
55  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Requirements too difficult to JR. Members on: March 03, 2018, 02:08:38 PM
I'm really having hard time posting quality posts since I'm new and don't know about cryptocurrency that much.. I guess we have to read and read more about it so we can create a good quality post. Maybe thats the first investment I can make, the knowledge about cryptocurrency and how it works. And the help of our fellow senior member in terms of replying and commenting on topics that we lack of knowledge. Hoping I can make quality posts that will merit soon!

That is the point most of the members are missing here I guess. It is more like sharpening your tool before cutting wood which increases your efficiency. If a member has failed to get a  merit point even after making 40-50 points, he needs to understand that there is some issue with his posts. There can be two problems only- either the writing skills are not good or his posts are not informative. Judging this post that I quoted, your writing skills are fine. You should work on increasing knowledge about bitcoins so as to make more meaningful replies.
56  Other / Meta / Re: Ideas for improving post quality? on: March 03, 2018, 02:02:08 PM
You should start with a ban on the sale of accounts on this forum.
Ban at change of IP to make it is problematic-there are those who moves or travels and they will appear in a risk zone.

As a measure of shit posting is possible to introduce a system of black marks and bans. When I was a admin of a local forum - we have done so.
1 shitpost - ban for a week and 1 black mark in the profile
2 shitpost - ban for a month and 2 black marks in the profile
3 shitpost - ban for a year and 3 black marks in the profile.
Amply and understandable.

I am not in favor of making too much restrictions on the members. When you start punishing users with 1 week ban for 1 shitpost, they will simple leave the forum unless they have some important purpose to be here. On the other hand something like merit system is more on the side of rewards. This means that members not able to get merits here can still post here and use other functions like PM. They will thus keep using the forum and we do not want them to go away or join alternative forums. Regarding that IP ban, that is not practical because of the reason you mentioned.
57  Other / Meta / Re: Would you join this Merit Survey? on: March 03, 2018, 01:58:09 PM
I'm kind of sad when i saw a one-liner-less-than-ten-word post of a high ranked getting merits and thinking if that post was made by a low ranked member, will it get some merits?

See, when the admin mentioned a quality post, he no where mentioned that it has to be an essay. Different members may have their own decisions regarding what is  a good quality post. For instance, suppose a member has asked that " how many sMerits will I get after receiving 10 merit points. " To the point answer to this question is 5 and there is no need to make a post in 5-6 lines for this. Most of the times rest of the content is not needed at all.

Regarding higher ranked members being treated differently, this is not true in as per my experience.
58  Other / Meta / Re: Is the Merit System Generating Enough Merits? on: March 03, 2018, 01:54:50 PM
I think the current system is serving its purpose. With the system we have, ranking up requires real hard work and creativity. Anyone can contribute their knowledge but nt everyone will be rewarded with merit so members need creativity in posting, something that will catch the attention, answer queries and share knowledge.

We should the positive side of merit system:

1) First of all, you are right that it has resulted in competition among the members here. This is good for the forum as all members will compete with each other for making quality posts here.

2) Another thing that I really like about the merit system is the excitement it brings for the members. Every time I login here and I see some merits on my profile, I get really happy.  I check the post that got merited and than try to make my future posts similar to that. It has thus motivated me to contribute more here.
59  Other / Meta / Re: Ranking System on: March 03, 2018, 01:51:14 PM
Did you know that the forum is centralized, even from the start Roll Eyes
There's always an admin who maintains this forum, first it was Satoshi and now Theymos.
When Theymos says that Merit system are here to stay, that's it, no point in arguing.
If the polling did happen, it will be cheated by alts anyway, it's fast to create a new account with 5 minute burner email Roll Eyes

You are free to leave/find your own democratic forum if you want Wink

I agree to you that creating a poll here before starting a new feature is not a good idea. However, the admin created a post before introducing this system. He created a post asking members to give their opinions on different ways that can help to improve post quality on this forum. Merit system was also mentioned as a solution by him and a lot of members supported the idea. We should also consider the fact that any forum or blog owner will not take a harsh decision like this until it is essentially required.
60  Other / Meta / Re: Does merit really helping the forum. on: March 03, 2018, 01:47:49 PM
Just had a look at your posting history:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1356158;sa=showPosts

You are posting replies with 5-10 words and you want to get merit for those posts. I do not think that you are going to get merit points for such posts. You should have a look at the posts which are getting merits from other members. Then try to improve your writing skills and write in similar way. Another thing required to get merits here is that you should have good knowledge about latest happenings related to bitcoins.
