41  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 11:33:21 PM
look for capacitors with bulging tops or any discoloration on top. the tops should be completely flat.

Everything looks absolutely fine on mobo, just cleared CMOS and took battery out and put back in to remove any memory settings... Still no joy!
It's the video card light that lights up now..

It's either going to be mobo or ram that's dead... Just praying it's the ram!
42  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 11:15:58 PM
I'm sorry to inform you your description fits a completely dead motherboard or failed psu I would replace both in this case since I have a feeling you overheated.

Mental... Every part is like brand new... Doubt I overheated though, got 4 120mm fans (2 at top sucking all air out) and graphics + processor not overclocked... I'll try my housemates memory when he's back just in case, otherwise the motherboards going back to manufacture Sad It's a P8P67 Pro btw, from looking across internet, looks like many have problems with it... PSU is fine, Corsair HX850.
Thanks for help!
43  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 10:36:13 PM
it sounds like you overheated and either the slot or channel responsible for that slot has failed on the motherboard if the dimm works in the other slot the dimm is still functional.

It just died on me again... After 10minutes, frozen screen, no way out of it had to power off on PC...

Won't power on again, even with memory in the new slot?
44  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 10:04:34 PM
OK some more info...

With memory in, the vga_led red light comes on and stays on. I think this means video card isn't detected?

With memory out, I get 2 beeps and still no boot and the memory red light stays on.

Any ideas?

EDIT:

Just got some life... Put the memory into different DIMM and has booted up fine! Does this mean the DIMM slot is faulty on mobo? Or is the ram just crap?
45  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 09:40:48 PM
Does it fail to turn on altogether?  Does it beep when you turn it on?  Do all your fans still spin up when you press the power button?

If you have a spare video card, remove the current one, plug in the spare and see if it boots up.  If not, it's probably not the video card that's busted.

If no lights, fans, etc. turn on when you press the power button, I'd guess a busted power supply (you can check if a PSU is good or not with a cheap PSU tester - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899705003).

If it's neither of these, you're looking at a fried mobo most likely.

Generally speaking, if you don't hear your mobo's POST beep code (the little beep when you boot up a PC, one beep usually means everything is good;  look in your mobo manual for further info about POST beep codes) and you're sure the mobo speaker is plugged in correctly, most signs point to dead mobo.  If you get some sort of beep code, it's probably something else.

NOTE: POST will fail without a functional video card, but you should still hear some sort of audible confirmation.  Same thing with RAM or CPU.  If it's missing or defective, you should hear some sort of beep at the POST.  If no beep - dead mobo.

EDIT:  I'm glad to help if you have any other questions.  I'll be back to check occasionally.  I'm always lurking these forums anyway.

EDIT2:  This is a fantastic step-by-step guide to troubleshooting power problems - http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic53866.html

Thanks for that!

Got no spare video card, but house mates back tomorrow so can try his out.

It's not the power supply, everything powers up fine Smiley Will be pretty hard to destroy a 850watt when I'm only using about 200watt at the moment!

No beeps at all, even with memory out which suggests mobo is dead... Still under warranty so can get that sorted. Not 100% sure if I even plugged in the mobo audio though so going to check in a minute.
46  Bitcoin / Mining / PC just died on: August 20, 2011, 08:52:45 PM
So my newly built PC just dropped dead on me this evening...
It is about 2 weeks old!
I was in the middle of a game and it froze. When I powered back on, I now get absolutely no signal to the monitor. No bios, start screen or anything. The standby light stays orange.

At first I figured it must be the cheap memory which I bought, however on removing it and trying to boot, still no start screen etc...
Could my graphics card be fried from mining? Or perhaps my motherboard has died?

If anyone has experienced similar issues I would appreciate your advice. All parts are new so still have warranty, just need to figure out what's broken first!

Thanks

Which brand/model 5850 do you own?

Most likely it does not have voltage control. Just like my XFX 5830 does not have voltage control.

Yeah this is an xfx too
48  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Overclocking xfx hd 5850 on: August 14, 2011, 01:47:22 PM
I'm still not able to alter the core voltage:

I went into settings and checked "unlock voltage control" and "unlock voltage monitoring" and restarted but it is still locked down...

Any idea why?

Thanks
49  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Overclocking xfx hd 5850 on: August 14, 2011, 01:29:17 PM
1) Install and use MSI Afterburner or Trixx.

2) Overclock & use flags for which ever miner/kernel you are using.

3) You will have to put up with the noise level or pick up a new better heatsink with low DBA fans, example:arctic cooling accelero HS.

Cheers,

Is it worth setting fan speed to 100% when overclocking then? What do you reckon is the max temperature I should not exceed? 85degrees celcius? I'll aim to keep it under 80 I think?
50  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Overclocking xfx hd 5850 on: August 14, 2011, 01:15:29 PM
Hi guys,

on standard manufacture I was getting around 290mhash/s.

I have the Catalyst Control Centre however my overclocking options seem rather limited:

The setup you see there is giving me around 300mhash/s.
Fan speed is still pretty low - as I am using my main PC as mining PC, don't really want fans running at 100%! They're pretty noisy!

I've seen threads with people pumping out 400mhash/s +...
I am curious as to how people are achieving this?
When I max out all settings (fan speed to 100% to be safe then 775Mhz, the max I achieve is 310mhash/s.

Any suggestions?

Do I need to use a third party software? Any recommendations?

Where did you get £10/btc from?
Closer to £6.25/btc atm.
I assumed that the price he hopes for.

I am also sure you can get more than 290Mhash/s from a 5850 depending on how much you overclock etc, some ppl get 400+Mhash from 5850s which will also alter the result of your calculations Smiley

You might be right I assumed at those speeds it was a 5830 but he said "another 5850". With a single 5850 you can definitely achieve 400+. When you have 5 5850's with an inch gap between them you should expect around 385.

My PC is my regular PC as well as a miner. I have 2 remaining PCI express slots however the 5850's would end up incredibly close to one another if I was to put any more in. Surely this could be damaging if overclocking?

I need to look into overclocking (Not tried yet) But must take into account that the more you overclock, the more power used, so need to find the balance! The watt meter should be very useful for that Smiley
I HIGHLY recommend contacting the user teukon. He has the best megahash per watt out there for the 5850. He said it in some thread in the hardware section but I'm way too lazy to find it.

Will see what I can find out Smiley
Thanks Mike!

We all hope it goes back to £10/btc (and higher) but most exchanges you can't even get $10/btc.

That will mess with your maths too.

At todays prices mining isnt viable for a lot of ppl, some have stopped. Many still mine hoping the coin they produce today will be worth more when the market recovers.

The £10 was just a nice number/ good case scenario.

53  Bitcoin / Mining / Bitcoin Mining with 1x 5850 in the UK on: August 13, 2011, 11:04:57 PM
Hi guys I am currently doing a bit of practise mining with 1 hd5850.
I am using a watt meter to measure the amount of energy currently being used from my PC

1 card mining = 200watts total consumption for my PC.

Standard rate electricity costs:

16.62p for first 2kwh/day then 13.32p so in 24hours = 33.24(10hours at 16.62) + 37.296(14hours at 13.32) = 70.536p/day.

Mining at 290Mhash/s so 0.14btc/day average. at £10/btc = £1.40. Or currently £6/btc so... 0.84p

Profit today = 13p...

With a second graphics card it would be an extra 100watts but double btc/day (300watts with £1.68/day + less electric costs relatively).

Is there something wrong with my calculations or is mining basically a break even process at the moment for a casual miner with just one card?
I will be switching to a different electricity plan soon which will mean cheaper electric for the more I use. This means if I start mining with more cards, there should be more profits.
Nevertheless, it appears that mining is currently not really worthwhile any longer for a casual miner unless you get your electricity for free?

I hope to get another 5850 at some point, but even then the profits will be marginal.

Any thoughts?
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Exchange that except Debit Card deposits on: August 05, 2011, 12:45:06 PM
Hi,

I am just wondering when/if or if there are currently plans for a bitcoin exchange accepting debit card deposits? This would allow buying coins to be MUCH quicker and cheaper.. What is the current reason that this has not been attempted?
55  Economy / Gambling / Re: Free Lottery on: August 05, 2011, 10:11:40 AM
I understand the whole point of "free" lol. But SO MANY people have joined and the jackpot could be much higher if everyone put in 0.01 btc anyone interested?

Everyones joined because it is indeed "free"...
Surely the numbers will reflect nicely if you get some decent advertisers?
Maybe something on the site to bring back a continuous stream of traffic?

Hi President,

Is "Discount Awarded" the new name for interest payments? Smiley

Yes... you noticed that?

Evidently both the IRS and our accountant stated that we cannot call it interest or else we must 1099 everyone that receives more than 10 USD worth of bitcoins.   Meaning we would have had to collect social security numbers,  etc etc...  something completely unacceptable for the bitcoin community.

If I called it commission,  it would have had the same process for over 600 USD worth of BTC.

The funny thing... same process, same coding, same everything.. but if it's called a discount it's not reportable.

Go figure...

Haha nice! The world today if full of funny little loop holes like that!
57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Speculation - Mybitcoin owner tried to short sell bitcoins on: August 04, 2011, 01:39:28 PM
Nah he straight out dumped a big chunk of them on the market which lowered prices... This also led to some panic sells as people saw them dropping. This all coincided with people losing confidence from the Polish exchange losing 17.5k bitcoins, MTGox issues and of course the MyBitCoin case...
He probably hasn't dumped them all, so expect a climb, then another drop!
I'm ready to buy if they drop low enough

60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: August 03, 2011, 11:02:40 AM

Hi everyone,
Finally received paypal's outcome this afternoon... They reversed the payment to the scammer so I'm out of pocket. Didn't get a reason or anything... I am royally pissed off...

1.) What did you learn?
2.) Did it cost you enough to remember what you learned?

Had the outcome for the second batch I sold on the same day today, paypal reversed payments to me... Very strange!
