41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Core qt 11.1 corrupt and buggy? on: October 17, 2015, 10:03:03 PM
Ever since 0.11 bitcoin core has been going down hill. Iv had to reindex so many times iv stopped running the node.
Maybe it's your hardware. Core is very hardware intensive, and if your hardware is failing, then core will be crashing a lot.
42  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.11.0 Linux - ReadBlockFromDisk crash - truncated block file? on: October 17, 2015, 10:02:26 PM
Update: It happened again, this time with blk00000.dat. Timestamp 2015-09-09 11:01:51 UTC. My first thought was maybe something did happen on that date, but then I remembered that I had just restored this file from a backup I made way back in July. There's no possible way it could have really been modified on September 9. What the fuck's going on here? (No, the backup is not corrupt - I restored it again and it's perfectly fine.)
Well the timestamp will be modified every time you run core since the program does access the file and can modify it.
43  Other / Meta / Re: Why bitcointalk.org Looks so Bad on: October 17, 2015, 10:01:15 PM
It does look dull at times and takes time to load. SMF also has limitations like threads "cannot be merged" and "the inability to turn of notifications to threads we have replied", the new forum is being awaited by me. There is no option like Quick Reply as well and I've suggested many additions for the new forum. Hope that they are considered.
I like the simplistic look. The loading time is unrelated to smf, it has to do with the server it is running on and the webserver software. Also, quick reply is a setting you can turn on. It is under Look and Layout Preferences.
44  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Core qt 11.1 corrupt and buggy? on: October 16, 2015, 07:44:52 PM
what do you mean reindex? my english is not the best, haha  Angry don't know what the best thing is what i can do now?

i can't restart the client so this mean wallet.dat is dead. only when i overwrite it with with the backup it works

and the 11.0 download link i don't know there is no dmg files for mac

i try it with -reindex. into the console right?

Depends.
1st close the current core session and make sure its closed.
For Linux you start a terminal and enter bitcoin-cli -reindex
Mac should be similar.
For Windows you open "run" by hitting Win + R, enter
c:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -reindex
and confirm with ok.
He is using a mac, so OP use
Code:
bitcoin-qt -reindex
from the terminal to run Bitcoin core
45  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running a full node vs running with "prune mode" enabled on: October 15, 2015, 08:56:38 PM
Block pruning was introduced with 0.11.0, you can run a pruned node right now if you wanted to.  There is no security compromise here, but you lose some functionality in not having the entire block chain stored at your node.  If you have HD space to spare and a decent internet connection there's really no reason to run in pruned mode.

You still have to d/l the entire 40GB+ blockchain the first time you install before it can be pruned, so starting a pruned node will still take some time, but once it's pruned you don't need to keep all the data.

Here's some good reading for you: https://news.bitcoin.com/pros-and-cons-on-bitcoin-block-pruning/

Keep in mind that a pruned mode can currently not offer a wallet and it does not relay blocks. It is thus no help to SPV clients or at least thats my understanding of SPV. A pruned node will just relay transactions.
The next release (0.12) will enable the wallet.

You need to PM theymos or badbear, they are the only ones who can help you.

Send them the message that you signed in order to prove that you own the account.
47  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain Conspiracy Theory on: October 09, 2015, 09:36:13 PM
1) It's not too expensive if you are a large agency. If the goal is to destroy bitcoin because of its potential future value, then this may be an efficient attack. The meaning of the attack is to prove that the blockchain is malleable and reduce its standing as a stable useful currency.
If you are a large government agency, no sane person in the government would allow you to do such a thing. It would be a massive waste of money and after the whole thing is done, what would they do with the leftover equipment? It can't be used for anything else.

2) Once devs have to modify code in the core client to make a decision (no matter how clear it is that one party is "good" and the other is "evil"), we have centralized and given the power to choose which chain dominates to the devs.
And of course that has already been done with checkpoints. We are letting the devs choose which chain we use because of the checkpoints already in place.

qwk thank you for the link, checkpoint blocks are an interesting concept
It is not just a concept, the checkpoints already exist.
The code is at https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/src/chainparams.cpp#L119
Here are the current checkpoints:
Code:
checkpointData = (CCheckpointData) {

When will the next one supermoon with eclipse happen?
2032 or 2033
49  Other / Off-topic / Supermoon lunar eclipse on: September 28, 2015, 02:26:48 AM
Anyone watching this lunar eclipse and want to share some pics of it? It is really cloudy where I am so I can barely see it, if at all.

Still giving 2 invites away.
51  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Operation Caelus; We will send a bitcoin satellite to space! (Join Us!) on: September 22, 2015, 08:07:35 PM
When you say

with 0 or close to 0 commercial satellite parts
do you mean that you want this to be built with off-the-shelf hardware instead of getting parts from companies that make stuff for cubesats? If so, I think that will be kind of hard to do since the parts might not be space ready and interfacing them together with space ready parts might be difficult.
52  Economy / Digital goods / Giving keybase.io invites (4 remaining) on: September 22, 2015, 01:26:00 PM
4 remaining.

I have 5 keybase.io invites I can give away. I will only give these to high ranking members that give a good reason as to why they need keybase (e.g your are an escrow and need to use keybase to protect against impersonators.)

You can post in this thread or pm me.
53  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Lost my password on my wallet on blockchain.info. on: September 18, 2015, 03:03:16 AM
An easy way to recover your wallet if you have the backup is to click on the Import Wallet button on the right side of the page. Then follow the instructions and it will make a new wallet account using the data from your old wallet.
54  Other / Meta / Re: Posts in RSS Reader are getting cut-off. Please remove the character limit. on: September 15, 2015, 07:34:00 PM
Try Pm'ing Theymos or BadBear directly. They might see it and do something.

Also, how are you accessing and RSS feed from Bitcointalk, I can't find out where it is.
55  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: First-seen-safe replace-by-fee (FSS RBF) on: August 15, 2015, 08:52:45 PM
You probably could be able to send additional funds to that address so that you can increase the fee. Since the second transaction would be rejected by FSS RBF, it should be okay to send the address extra Bitcoin for the fee and still have the transaction be accepted as long as the outputs are in the same order with new ones (for change) are appended at the end of the list.

You could also do the standard fix of wait it out or CPFP.
56  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: stolen bitcoins from Bitcoin Core on: July 22, 2015, 02:34:04 AM
Hi Thanks for your help.

Unfortunatley, (as outlined in my string)  I have been through a long saga with Bitcoin Core....Can get it to open, can't reload it.  Finally deleted it and reloaded it and I still get the same error message.  I have upgraded my OS X to the latest operating system and have finally tried changing to Multi bit HD  Unfortunately they require some words to restore an existing wallet which I never created so I was told "go make a blockchain.info account and then transfer....Instead of having to do that.....

Is there any other utility that will allow me to open a .dat file (created in Bitcoin Core) that will not require secret words and any intermediate steps?

Thanks in advance

John
You could try pywallet. It allows you to see the stuff inside a wallet.dat file. You can get the private keys out of the wallet and import it elsewhere. I would recommend that you use Electrum as a wallet. It works well and allows you to import private keys which MultiBit does not allow. You can find pywallet here: https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet
57  Other / Off-topic / Re: how to generate virtual ONE TIME use CC? ( for trial purposes ) on: July 19, 2015, 03:52:17 AM
You have to buy them. You can find them in the marketplace section of the forum and elsewhere onlin however they can be a bit costly. Those cards come with a small amount since most places that require a card for trials will take 1$ out of the card for verification then refund you that dollar.
58  Economy / Services / Re: WTB ICQ account. on: July 17, 2015, 11:05:19 PM
I can provide this. Do you accept escrow?
nvm. Can't get it to accept my phone
59  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for part time alt coin promoter on: July 17, 2015, 01:18:50 AM
I would be interested in this, although I am better at the development side of things. Would anything require my real identity? Also, how much would you be paying?
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is NOT a currency debate! on: July 15, 2015, 07:58:50 PM
Bitcoin is can be commodity and can be a currency too, it's depends on you used it, you look at the value of btc to fiat exchange, and you see bitcoin as commodity which only can exchange to fiat only, you need see is widely, now a lot merchant or company accept bitcoin as payment processor, it's prove if bitcoin can be a currency.

Do you know what currency makes currency or funds for that case?

The fact that a merchant in a particular country has the legal obligation to accept it. That simple fact above all the rest makes it currency/funds. This means that a merchant in the US can not refuse to accept USD for a product or service. As to bitcoin no such obligation exists hence NOT A CURRENCY. May be a token of some sort but not a currency.
I believe that it is considered a currency. Just look at the definition of currency
Quote from: Google
a system of money in general use in a particular country.
Quote from: wikipedia
A more general definition is that a currency is a system of money (monetary units) in common use, especially in a nation.
Quote from: dictionary.com
something that is used as a medium of exchange; money.
Quote from: Merriam-Webster
something (as coins, treasury notes, and banknotes) that is in circulation as a medium of exchange
Hmm.. It seems that they all pretty much agree that currency is used for exchange, also known as money. Now, by these defnitions, Bitcoin is a currency, it is a something in circulation in general use (use by many people) that is being used as a medium of exchange, also known as money. Except it is not used by a particular nation.
